    Pro Tip - always inflate your tires dry (no sealant) to the maximum pressure after installing new tape. The pressure in the tire will bed and form the tape to the rim. Otherwise, if you fill the tire with sealant straight away, you run a greater risk of the sealant getting under the tape and compromising the bond.

    • @nilz6432
      @nilz6432 4 роки тому +18

      This is a top tip, i have been doing the exact same thing and it works beautifully! I really don't understand why i dont see this tipp more often.
      You can put the tape in almost as messy as you want, after pressing it down with 4 bars or 50 to 60 psi, which is way more pressure than you can apply with your fingers, it will sit 100% without air bubbles underneath.
      When sealant gets under the tape, it will leak, sealant will get in the rim and make a mess.
      (I had a bontrager rim which ended up airtight because the stans fluid sealed the holes for the spoke nipples, only realized it when i tryed to adjust the spoke tension.)

    • @pab2611
      @pab2611 4 роки тому +10

      I was just about to write the same tip. One thing tho, you should inflate it with an inner tube inside, otherwise the pressure wont do as much in the sense of bedding the tape

    • @KN-ko8ez
      @KN-ko8ez 4 роки тому

      Is there any specific length of time which you should leave it inflated to seat the tape to the rim? Like, would it be best advised to leave it overnight before deflating it and adding sealant and re-inflating?

    Here's a tip : smear some sealant around the valve bung just before you seat it into the rim. Gives it a little extra seal.

  • @kaupo80
    @kaupo80 4 роки тому +104

    Top tip #1: remove the valve core when seating the tire. This way air can rush into the tire quicker (no core on the way) and you increase your chances to seat the tire on the first go.
    Top tip #2: if have no pump with booster or a separate canister, you can cheat and may (and may not) work. Attach the punp hose to the valve, but then fold the hose with one hand so that no air goes thourgh the hose. Then pump until you see some 9-10 bars on the gauge (if you have a high pressure floor pump). Then realease the hose and keep pumping. I have popped several tires this way.

  • @davidrsmith2417
    @davidrsmith2417 3 роки тому

    I see that Specialized Bicycles now has a series of self-sealing inner tubes that have a perfectly applied layer of sealant during manufacturing. This sealant is said to stay in a semi-liquid form for many years (does not dry out) and is ready to instantly seal against thorns, nails, etc. Yet being permanently inside of the tube, there is zero mess to the rim, tire or the user. This new series also features a novel weight saving design - the tube circumference is not of a constant thickness of rubber. We know that thick inner tubes add weight but also are very durable against punctures, these new tubes have thick rubber on the outermost part of the tube that is adjacent to the tread and sidewall but thinner, weight saving rubber on the portion of the tube that touches only the rim. Self-sealing just like tubeless tires, but no special tubeless valves or canister air pumps are required, no expensive (and heavy) bottles of sealant, no messy clean ups ever and a perfectly applied layer if sealant. However, the novice mechanic can still pinch the tube during a ham fisted installation - alas, nothing is perfect. I would love to see GMBN compare modern self-sealing tubes to tubeless setups - from puncture resistance to weight differences, trail maintenance headaches and overall costs.

    7:10 notice how Dods is pre-tensioning the rim tape. He also makes a circular hole through the tape and doesn't "tear" it-which like Doddy said prevents the tape from shearing/wearing itself apart over time. Puncturing the tape and stretching it slightly actually locally strengthens the tape puncture site. Doddy is a tech guru, so listen to him carefully.

My valves didn't come with different types of rubbers so I had to hope for the best. Wanted to try the dry method first but didn't have a plastic tube to fill the tyre with. Easy solution was to use a syringe. It only had a 10ml capacity bit worked nonetheless. I only have a track pump so when I pumped the tyre (before putting in sealant) nothing happend. Did some fiddling with the tyre, pumped like made and, hey presto, the tyre sealed first time with no apparent leaks. If you dont have any good pumps, you can do it with basic handpump too, first you do the rim tape thing, then seat the bead with innertube, then you break only 1 bead, then take the innertube out, abd but sealent in, seated bead have to be faced down and pump it as hard as you can, its hard but its doable.

    I'm still deciding whether I want to do this or not, but great explanation. One question that came to my mind: Weight saving can't be really a thing right, if you put 200ml of sealant in there? That must account for at least 200 grams?

    Preventing tire punctures: OK. But save weight... I'm not so sure. You take away the inner tube, but you add the valve + 150 grams of sealant. And if you top-up your sealant regulary it will be even more. I did it anyway and it saved me for a couple of punctures.

    I found that Kapton tape work almost as well as a dedicated rim tape. (Kapton tape is thinner, requires more layers) Kapton and rim tapes are made from very similar materials, which feel plastic-y, not stretchable like duct tape, and will not leave residue like gorilla or duct tapes.

    I wouldn't stretch the tape like you said although you were really just holding it tight. Tapes want to return to the original shape if you stretch them and might lose their grip.

    Great video. However i've got 3 sets of tubeless wheels and none of them are lighter than when i used innertubes and a normal tyre. I've found that a tubeless set up is between 150-200grams heavier than a standard wheel.

      My wheels are tubeless on my commencal, I have just bought some new tyers, are all tyers tubeless compatible?

    • @leehyson9831
      @leehyson9831 4 роки тому

      @@Team_Banchamek Tubeless tyres will say "tubeless" on them somewhere.
      You can try and use normal none-tubeless tyres but they tend to leak air and sealant because they are constructed differently(i have tried this so i know this to be a fact).
      To be safe and get good results it is best to use genuine tubeless tyres if you are planning to go tubeless.

    Great video. This something i’ve been wanting to do however i have a few questions:
    1. This looks like a permanent converstion. If not; how easy is it to swap tyres? I have slicks that i use during the working week and knobblies for the weekend.
    2. Should you still carry a hand pump since there’s little chance of getting a puncture and even if you do the sealant will fill it?
    3. Would you need to carry a spare tube anymore?
    4. How ofter would you need to top up the sealant?

    • @emmawynne9734
      @emmawynne9734 4 роки тому

      I wouln't want to swap until I was done with the tyres - it's messy to change them and you'd be using lots of sealent. I'd still take a pump, if you hit something really big the sealent might not seal immediatly - I'd also take a tubless repair kit to fill any hole that the sealent can't cope with. Assuming you havent had any huge leeks, I'd refill every 4-6 months. As to whether you need to carry a spare tube - depends really - If I was never going to be more than 20 mile from home I'd risk it, but any further and I might want to carry a few more spares. With inner tubes I worry about punctures all the time - I don't at all with tubeless.

    Excellent stuff on tubeless. From the road and gravel bike world, you have to look to MTB people for any useful advice on tubeless set up. One thing though. An electric compressor with 120L/min output at 0 bar, and capable of 6 bar maximum, can be had for €50-€80. You might need an adaptor head with a pressure guage too. But they aren't that expensive. GIven the prices of some bicycle pumps with reservoirs, etc. why not just buy the real tool for the job straight away? Granted, they're noisy, but you use them for about 10 seconds at a time at most....

  • @Ricochetmex

    I made a huge mistake when buying valves, it didn’t occur to me that the milimiter range was refering to the rim depth, and I ended up with ones much longer and didn’t tighten up. I bodge them with a plastic spacer but I felt so stupid haha
