This was the most helpful video I’ve fond and I’ve been looking for about 3 days now. I’m a single mom and actually prefer to do this myself just cuz I’m interested in this kind of stuff and can save a ton of money! I bumped a car that made a sudden turn in front of me with no signal, good thing I wasn’t going any faster!....I could try to pull the top part of the radiator support back to it’s original position but I think it’ll be better to just replace the whole thing so it’s straight. I’ll also need to replace the hood and bumper. It’s not leaking any fluids and the car is running just fine. I was able to push the hood down as far as it’ll go but the lip is tucked and won’t latxh 😕 just needs some TLC. I also just want to replace the radiator just looks old...now all I need is the tools. I have a 2001 Accord. And I rear ended another car yesterday. The damage is very similar to this car. After bringing the car home and beginning the process of disassembling I became discouraged after I saw that there would be some cutting and welding. I don’t own a welder. I was bummed out. But after watching your video and reading some of the comments and ideas I’m pretty confident I could make it work. Thank you very much for posting this video. It’s been a great motivator and huge help.
I don't normally recommend it, but if you do not have a welder, you can use nuts and bolts. You will just need a drill and some good bits. The issue with using nuts and bolts is, some of the place points that need to be attached are almost impossible to get a nut and bolt to it. However, that isn't always the case on every car. Some are really easy, while others are just a nightmare. But try some nuts and bolts to reassemble it.
Thank you very much for this video. I bumped a truck with my f350 sd 2002. Body shop estimated $8500 to repair. So far I have $2500 in new parts but doing labor myself. I was stuck on replacing lower radiator frame, thank you!!!!

I have been asked many times if you can bolt a radiator support in when someone doesn't have a welder or doesn't know how. The answer is yes. Just use Grade 8 bolts, nuts and washers. You may want to put a few extra in at the bottom, especially where the support connects to the frame rails. Let me know if you need any other help. I got hit from behind, smashed into the car in front of me....I was totaled, but had as much as I could fixed...they used epoxy on the upper plastic parts. Don't know if I want to attempt this or not, but this video is great. I've done fenders before, but holy cow. Although If I did, I could pick up some used fenders... Thanks for the video..

My 03 maxima radiator support is rusted out & needs replacing. I found a new 1 online for under $100, not sure what shipping will run me. How much is this type of job? Will the radiator have to be drained? How much should I be paying to change mine out?
@workingtools2999 Yes, I have done that often. Just cut out all the rusted part, be sure to cut well into the unrusted areas. Then weld in the new metal. As a tip, I would use a Weld Through Primer to help prevent your welded area from rusting later on. Prime and paint it thoroughly.

Really, the welder is going to be the only tool that isn't cheap to own, especially for a one time repair. However, you can use nuts and bolts. You will just want to use grade 8 nuts and bolts and those can be purchased at the hardware store.
Had no idea these parts were available along with the weld cutter! my daughter rear ended someone and found your video! I am a diy’r and have a little better outlook than trying to straighten twisted metal. Question, metal is very thin what kind of welder did you use? I have a flux core with min/max setting (harry homeowner harbor freight welder). Have access to gas mig which I’m guessing is better? Thanks so much for a great video!
Your hood prop rod is usually on the radiator support. So if you want to leave the hood on, you will need to use a board or buy a universal prop. The radiator depends on how much in the way it is going to be. If you are welding your support back in, I don't think I would want the radiator near the hot sparks and slag as that can burn a hole in it. Beast practice is to drain and remove it.
No I have to bolt it on some the old bolts rusted n snapped off what size do you think the bolts are for 2007 toyota corolla radiator support or what size should I use if I buy new nuts n bolts
@@survivalmansurvivalman365 I think you will have a variety size bolts due to the area you are bolting. Where the rad support bolts to the frame rails, I would use no less than 5/16". Where it bolts to the inner fender panels, kind of around the headlamp openings, no smaller than 1/4". All the bolts should be grade 8.

I am currently fixing the front end on my 06 civic coupe.. im about half way done removing the support it is just hard to get the welds on the inside ( i think i can just drill from the outside?) .. i dont have a welder and my friend that does body work is going to help me and try to borrow a welder but he himself is not a welder.. am i better off getting nuts/bolts or should we give it a shot with welding ?

I wouldn't use rivets, they are not strong enough. You can use nuts and bolts. However, they need to be grade 8. Also, you are going to have some areas that are either going to be impossible to get bolts into or just not at all. What year make and model are you working on?

Hi RodsShop, I am the idiot that asked if I can use nuts and bolts instead of welding the bar into place. I have another question- How do I know which spot welds to drill out to remove this assembly from a 2005 Honda Civic? Do I just drill out all the spot welds on the assembly? I took off the fenders, headlights, radiator, condenser, hood, bumper cover and support bar behind the bumper cover, sorry I do not know the name. Some of the spot welds are obvious, but others I am not sure if I should drill out. Please help, I am afraid that I will drill out the wrong welds. Thanks.

What's the difference between oem radiator support and aftermarket?! I have a 97 honda accord and the dealership wants $480 for a new radiator support!!
If you are talking taking it to a shop, the price will be high and it depends on how much more is damaged. Most body shops will not just fix the radiator support and not repair and paint the rest of the car. However, if you could find an individually owned shop, they would charge somewhere between $500 and $2000 in labor and this depends on the make and model of the car. Some supports are fairly easy to replace, while others are complete time sucking nightmares. The radiator support itself can run from $75 to $4000 depending on buying it aftermarket or OEM and the make and model of the car. I know that isn't the best answer but if you want a better estimate, tell me the year, make and model of your car and if you are doing it yourself or taking it to a garage and how much besides the support needs to be fixed.
The welder I used in this video and the same one I use on all my auto body projects is the Eastwood 135 MIG. I use gas on mine, 75% Argon, 20% CO2 mix. But you can use Flux wire which requires no gas. Gas wire is cleaner looking but for a support, not too many are going to see the welds. Iv got an 03 subaru forester so its riveted, left corners smashed in after lower control arm snapped on a country road an launched us into a ditch, would you recommend grinding it off or should I try to pop the rivets out before that?
Do you have the under hood dimensions for honda accord 2006? I have similar damage and am trying to just fix the radiator with a come along tool. I do not have welding tools/skill. Your help with the dimensions is much appreciated.
RodsShop have you replaced a core support on a 1998 ford ranger mine is bent at the top mostly on passenger side, plus I have to replace the drivers side fender and inner fender will the inner fender be spot welded I will need to replace the battery tray as well, do you have a video on removing inner fender and replacing
Can I just use a big nail and hammer instead of using that spot weld tool? after which I will just drill it with some tools that makes a hole starting from small scaling up to a bigger one?
I would not recommend using a nail gun and it can blow up or have the nail lash back at you, and it will tear up the nail gun. There are not that many welds to center punch and drill. Take your time and keep it safe.
It doesn’t seem like the radiator itself has to me messed with or anything at all? If that’s the case, the job doesn’t seem too terribly and very helpful.
Sometimes you get lucky and all you have to do is unbolt the radiator from the support and leave it on the car without having to take hoses loose. Good deal for you!!!
That would be a hard answer to give, most supports weld in, so there are no bolts. Plus if there are bolts, not all brand cars are going to be the same. When it comes to body work, you just tighten the bolts tight. Not over tighten them, but it is more than snug. Just when you feel the bolt come to a stop, then tweak it a little tighter.
@@rohitbhatnagar7599 True, I just did an Altima that had four bolts that bolted it to the main frame rails, but again, these types of bolts when doing body work do not have torque specs. However, if you are just wanting to use a torque wrench, you need to look up the size bolt it is to get its specs. On my website, I have a page that give you torque specs by size of bolt and the grade of bolt. You se, I have no idea if you are talking about a 6mm bolt or a 14mm bolt. Would a repaired rad support cause a fender issue wheel to fender space issue? The one side I can see repair done tk the the rad support my wheel sticks out a bit past the fender like the body doesn’t line up
It is possible, some people try to repair the radiator supports when it is just quicker and easier to replace them. Since the radiator support is key for the front end to align up, strong possibility that is your issue. Send me pics of what you are talking about and I will try to help you best I can. Is it possible to remove the radiator support without having to replace the radiator? I have a toyota auris where the support is banged up but the rad and ac work fine so I was thinking of just replacing the support panel, it's only bolted in and isn't welded.
Yes, you don't have to replace the radiator or the condenser when you change out a radiator support, no matter if it is welded in or bolted. The only time you would have to replace either is if they got damaged. If you are talking about leaving them hooked up while you change out the support, that can be tricky as some of the cars have the condenser on one side of the support and the radiator on the other. Plus they often run the A/C lines through holes through the support forcing you to have to disconnect those lines. In most cases, a grinder will make the job harder because of having to grind so much more metal away than just drilling the spot welds out. But if you have the patience and the time, yes you can. However, there may be areas where you will have to grind into metal that stays on the car, which can weaken the structure, so be careful
@@torrischappell7339 It doesn't have to be gently, the issue you may run into is that some of these welds are like down in dips and crevices which could cause you to grind on metal that needs to stay on the car. If you can get to all the welds without hurting any other parts, then go for it. Just be careful of the parts you need to keep to reattach too.
RodsShop that’s ridiculous. The shop already had the tools, it’s should be about the time spent on the job & the cost of the new support. If I walk in with a new support in hand & pay for it to be done it should be no higher then $400. That’s good $ for a days work. I have to work a week to bring that home.
@@RodsshopOrg Many thanks for the advice. My big problem is the passenger side where the radiator support is connected went down by almost an inch. How can I solve that? If I don't level it gaps will show up and the bumper is not level.

I would need to know the make and model but if your car is like this one, they would charge between $1000 to $1500, and that depends on the area you live in as well. You can find independents like myself that could do it far cheaper. Go to your local parts stores and ask around. Ask if they know anyone that does that kind of work cheap or on the side. Those guys always has someone they know. The bigger body shops are over priced and are just too high. They should provide cheaper rates for older cars, just based on the fact, if you had a big wad of cash, you would be in a brand new car. But our society doesn't work that way, it is all about the greed.

Some of the spot welds are obvious, but others I am not sure if I should drill out. Please help, I am afraid that I will drill out the wrong welds. Thanks.
Sorry for the dumb question. Thank you for the quick reply, I sincerely appreciate your help. Experts like you can take one look at this and know which welds to drill out, and even though I have done plenty of mechanical work, this is the first time that I had to do major body work, so this is definitely somewhat confusing since I have no experience with collision repair. I hope I do not mess this up since this is my only running car and that would be bad lol. Thanks for your help and I hope I do not need to bother you again with more noob questions.

If you are talking taking it to a shop, the price will be high and it depends on how much more is damaged. Most body shops will not just fix the radiator support and not repair and paint the rest of the car.
However, if you could find an individually owned shop, they would charge somewhere between $500 and $2000 in labor and this depends on the make and model of the car.
Some supports are fairly easy to replace, while others are complete time sucking nightmares. The radiator support itself can run from $75 to $4000 depending on buying it aftermarket or OEM and the make and model of the car.
I know that isn't the best answer but if you want a better estimate, tell me the year, make and model of your car and if you are doing it yourself or taking it to a garage and how much besides the support needs to be fixed.

The welder I used in this video and the same one I use on all my auto body projects is the Eastwood 135 MIG. I use gas on mine, 75% Argon, 20% CO2 mix. But you can use Flux wire which requires no gas. Gas wire is cleaner looking but for a support, not too many are going to see the welds. Here is where I bought my Welder:

Iv got an 03 subaru forester so its riveted, left corners smashed in after lower control arm snapped on a country road an launched us into a ditch, would you recommend grinding it off or should I try to pop the rivets out before that?
Do you have the under hood dimensions for honda accord 2006? I have similar damage and am trying to just fix the radiator with a come along tool. I do not have welding tools/skill. Your help with the dimensions is much appreciated.
RodsShop have you replaced a core support on a 1998 ford ranger mine is bent at the top mostly on passenger side, plus I have to replace the drivers side fender and inner fender will the inner fender be spot welded I will need to replace the battery tray as well, do you have a video on removing inner fender and replacing
Can I just use a big nail and hammer instead of using that spot weld tool? after which I will just drill it with some tools that makes a hole starting from small scaling up to a bigger one?
I would not recommend using a nail gun and it can blow up or have the nail lash back at you, and it will tear up the nail gun. There are not that many welds to center punch and drill. Take your time and keep it safe.

Sometimes you get lucky and all you have to do is unbolt the radiator from the support and leave it on the car without having to take hoses loose. Good deal for you!!!
What is torque setting for radiator support bolts....
That would be a hard answer to give, most supports weld in, so there are no bolts. Plus if there are bolts, not all brand cars are going to be the same.
When it comes to body work, you just tighten the bolts tight. Not over tighten them, but it is more than snug. Just when you feel the bolt come to a stop, then tweak it a little tighter.
@@RodsshopOrg To clarify - radiator support assembly gets bolted to frame of car (usually not bolted). Looking for torque on these bolts.
@@rohitbhatnagar7599 True, I just did an Altima that had four bolts that bolted it to the main frame rails, but again, these types of bolts when doing body work do not have torque specs. However, if you are just wanting to use a torque wrench, you need to look up the size bolt it is to get its specs.
On my website, I have a page that give you torque specs by size of bolt and the grade of bolt. You se, I have no idea if you are talking about a 6mm bolt or a 14mm bolt. You would not torque these at the same torque.

It depends on the car. Some radiator supports are made in sections, others are one piece, which is more common. What is your car?

Would a repaired rad support cause a fender issue wheel to fender space issue? The one side I can see repair done tk the the rad support my wheel sticks out a bit past the fender like the body doesn’t line up
It is possible, some people try to repair the radiator supports when it is just quicker and easier to replace them. Since the radiator support is key for the front end to align up, strong possibility that is your issue. Send me pics of what you are talking about and I will try to help you best I can. Yes you can bolt it on, just use grade 8 nuts and bolts
Is it possible to remove the radiator support without having to replace the radiator? I have a toyota auris where the support is banged up but the rad and ac work fine so I was thinking of just replacing the support panel, it's only bolted in and isn't welded.
Yes, you don't have to replace the radiator or the condenser when you change out a radiator support, no matter if it is welded in or bolted. The only time you would have to replace either is if they got damaged. If you are talking about leaving them hooked up while you change out the support, that can be tricky as some of the cars have the condenser on one side of the support and the radiator on the other. Plus they often run the A/C lines through holes through the support forcing you to have to disconnect those lines.

In most cases, a grinder will make the job harder because of having to grind so much more metal away than just drilling the spot welds out. But if you have the patience and the time, yes you can. However, there may be areas where you will have to grind into metal that stays on the car, which can weaken the structure, so be careful

@@torrischappell7339 It doesn't have to be gently, the issue you may run into is that some of these welds are like down in dips and crevices which could cause you to grind on metal that needs to stay on the car. If you can get to all the welds without hurting any other parts, then go for it. Just be careful of the parts you need to keep to reattach too.

RodsShop that’s ridiculous. The shop already had the tools, it’s should be about the time spent on the job & the cost of the new support. If I walk in with a new support in hand & pay for it to be done it should be no higher then $400. That’s good $ for a days work. I have to work a week to bring that home.
Did you buy a new hood to replace the old one?
Yes, it wouldn't be practical to straighten that hood considering how cheap a replacement is

I would need to know the make and model but if your car is like this one, they would charge between $1000 to $1500, and that depends on the area you live in as well. You can find independents like myself that could do it far cheaper. Go to your local parts stores and ask around. Ask if they know anyone that does that kind of work cheap or on the side. Those guys always has someone they know. The bigger body shops are over priced and are just too high. They should provide cheaper rates for older cars, just based on the fact, if you had a big wad of cash, you would be in a brand new car. But our society doesn't work that way, it is all about the greed.
On index 6:37 you were removing the radiator support already without showing us how to spot all the stuff to be able to detach it.
That is because where my welds in this video are most likely going to be in different places than whatever you are working on. I show you how to find where the spot welds are and I show you how to drill them out. I am not going to make an hour long video showing me drill out every spot weld.
