Ahh I really appreciate this video. I am also in my Teenage years, and all I wanted my life to be centered around was me, my guitar, and music. It does hit ye deep in the sense that you are limited to whatever life has to offer. I love sports, video games, etc., but music is all that has consumed me now. I feel left out actually being just a musician and nothing else, and this video helped me to understand 100% that I need to let myself be more just the me I always have been rather than completely being the Music Me. Of course I will always commit to music and guitar, but I do need to let myself go sometimes and also commit more equal time and attention to my other more prominent hobbies. Thank you my man!

I found Zen Guitar from your recommendation and just wanted to say that the book significantly changed my relationship with my guitar. Two brief examples - (1). Searching through my daily habits, I realized that I drink coffee every morning and have about 30 minutes to pick up the guitar, tune, and play. Anchoring my practice time to this existing habit helped me overcome a major hurdle I have had with practicing every day. Playing daily has become a lifestyle. (2) I also learned from this book who my audience is. After a lot of self reflection on this topic, I realized that the audience I wanted to play for wasn't other people, but instead, I wanted to play as a way to honor God. The amount of pressure, jealousy, and self doubt that were lifted off my shoulders by coming to this conclusion is immeasurable. These two revelations have made such an enormous impact between myself and my guitar that I just wanted to say thank you for promoting such a life changing book.

    (long comment, I know)
Absolutely solid advice. I started university last autumn, and for introductions in my class we were supposed to write one thing about ourselves on a little piece of paper and I had a small existential crisis because "Who or what am I if I don't play guitar? What do I do when I'm not playing? Am I even a person or am I just a guitarist? Is guitar my entire personality?" and it was a terrible feeling. I'm doing better now though. Get more hobbies and interests, find things you enjoy doing unrelated to music. I picked up drawing again, I have always enjoyed working with theatre and have been fortunate enough to be a part of 5 productions at a local student theatre, and I tried singing for that theatre's music group. I take walks almost daily, trying to be outside for at least 1 hour every day even if it's just going to the city square and buying little things I need or window shopping. I was re-introduced to anime through other students studying Japanese, and through them I have also learned a lot about Japanese culture, society and history and a little bit of the language and it is super interesting! Had a friend visiting from abroad and she introduced me to photography and skating. There are so many things you can do in this world it's almost a bad idea to only focus on one thing!

Same here, I spent countless hours working on experimental guitar videos on my channel, and they all ended up being invisible and garbage, so I stopped, and didn't missed it at all.
Now I'm focusing on playing alone just for myself, by myself, and it's a real pleasure.

Wise words from a young man! I´m twice Your age and couldn´t agree more.
Things we choose to do in life changes our perspecive of things. Things that just happens to us, do too.
And those things do manifest themselves in the way we play and/or create music.
So, let life lead your way it needs and... Then Play On.

Good video, even though i'm only a guitarist in hobby these problems are present in so many things. I don't think anything is entirely free of our personal investment in the relationship between the craft and the artisan and agree that our lives should not derive meaning from one thing that we do or one aspect of skill. In retrospect i would ask however at this point in any persons musical life, how much do you define yourself by the role music plays in your life? Is that leading you in the direction you want to go, and does a separation between identifying as your ability as a musician affect your work ethic?
To be honest this topic is endlessly interesting to me and i'd love to see it explored further.

Thats a reason, why 1 guitar is NOT enough. If I am not going well with my Washburn G5, I am playing Strat, if I dont like it, I will play... Another Strat.. Or maybe ESP... Or Martin? For shure, my brave old Ibaenz will help me! Or I just will play on classic nylon guitar and then Washburn again.:-)

I think it's important to dissociate with the guitarist more often than not. I've learned to accept that at this point the law of diminishing return is against me and that my skills are sufficient to write and perform music. I still actively try to improve aspect of my playing but I focus on coming up with new music and learn from the road blocks my songwriting brings up. It's like when you learn a new language: at some point you just have to stop worrying about getting grammar or other aspects of that language's mechanics wrong and just express yourself with the tools you have. There will always be someone better than you, but just make each song you learn or write better than the last one and I think that's the way to get satisfaction in that field.

Thank you so much for this video ! . You just pointed out my worst struggles atm which is really depressing me and drags me down because all what I personalize is myself as a musician and every technical or lack of knowledge keeps me down and this is actually the problem . We should be more than a musician to keep a human in balance . Great and true words but it is combined with a lot of mental strength to not burn out in a creative way . I am 20 years old and in practice to get into music study but I get frightened every day I think of losing my big passion for music when I start working in music industry because music literally saved my life several times and espresses me in every kind of way. Idk what I should do now. Should I keep music as a hobby that I got more balance in life by working something else or should I risk to make my biggest passion professional . ? (Btw sorry for my bad English , I am not a native speaker ;).)

Thank you so much for this video! That was me for so long! If music wasn’t going well, I’d be depressed. I recently confronted this when I injured my hand. I haven’t played guitar in way too long now and I am starting soon. For days, I was depressed. I just moved half way across the country and don’t have a job or friend circle yet. So my music was all I had. But then I realized how much there is to me besides just my music. I rediscovered my love for reading and dove into works of Poe and Hemingway that have set on my shelf for so long, I went out and took effort to meet people, even girls. I renewed my interest in current events and politics, and most importantly I spent time with family. This is so relevant it’s eerie.

"Playing guitar to make yourself feel superior to others is not a good reason to play music." This did not apply my guitar playing as much as my career, which I pursued for the wrong reasons. I was superior to my peers for a while, but now they have surpassed me. They were doing it for the right reasons and had their life in balance, while I lost my motivation and hit the wall.

Bro i feel the exact same way like i always compare myself to other players because they were better people than me and this caused my petty jealousy to emerge and sometimes i would just show off my skills on guitar. I usually meditate or focus on other habits or hobbies such as practicing bass on my guitar, acoustics, video games, working out, or just chatting with friends to help relieve the stress of my jealousy and arrogance.
All in all I've made a new goal for myself and that goal is to just accept that someone is better than me but i can still match their standards or be just as good as they are if not better, i have a hard time accepting loss but I'm managing it with meditation and my cocky attitude before has now left my mind as i dont feel the need to show off or get attention anymore. I just focus on my skills
    If you saw this,
Thank you for some good healthy advice and hopefully we'll both succeed in our future endeavors. Keep on rockin🤘
