Curious, what's the point of purging with CO2 before the fill since O2 enters the bottle when you pull the filler out. Shouldn't you purge the O2 in the headspace after filling?

The first shot of CO2 adds a layer to the bottom of the bottle, CO2 sinks. As you fill the bottle, that layer will rise/float on top of the beer protecting it from any oxygen that's in the bottle, then it gets pushed out when the bottle is full. When you remove the filler the beer level drops creating your head space, then you give it another shot to purge the head space.

That's the beauty of fire extinguishers... CO2 is denser than O2, which means if you aim your extinguisher towards the fire, the CO2 will take the space of oxygen, so that the fire will not be in contact with the O2, causing the flame to fade. Similarly, when you purge with CO2, the CO2 will take the BOTTOM space of the bottle (because it is denser), and this bottom layer will rise as you fill the bottle with beer, but will always be right on the surface of the liquid-gas interface, avoiding the contact between O2 and beer. Once you remove the filler, oxygen does get in, and I would strongly advise you to give it a little CO2 shot on the top just to be safe

I'm a little confused... Is the beer keg o beer force carbonated first or does The Last Straw inject carbonation as you fill?

Its already carbonated in the keg.

How is this different from bottle fillers that are called counter pressure fillers?

+Grilla Ray This is no counter pressure filler, it is just a filler with a CO2 option. I imaging there will be a lot of foam and spoil with lagers and other beers that are not flat beers (only works on low CO2 pressure beers).
