Totally agree with you, Billy. Stout SZN = all year long, baby! When I'm in the mood for a dark beer, I don't care if it's 90 F outside, I'm drinking one. This was delicious. I wish I would've bought more. Cheers, buddy!
It's getting close to that time of year again...stout season. I love stouts and porters man, and this one (the way you describe it) makes my mouth water and want to dig in early. Based on my location, the only option for getting beers like this one would be Total Wine, and I have 3 of them within 2 hours drive time. None of them carry this. I guess I'll have to settle for something a little different, like the Goose Island Backyard Stout. But it is so darn expensive at over $25 for a 16oz bottle, I may only drink a couple of these each year. You'd think if Total Wine carries this one in Florida, they'd carry a Dogfish Head version as well. Anyway, keep up the great work with these reviews. You're a pleasure to watch. Cheers!
Thanks, man! Very much appreciate the kind words. I don't think they've re-brewed this one since 2021, which is a total bummer. If they do, I'm pretty sure Total Wine will totally carry it. Keep your eye out on DFH's social media pages and website. They usually have a beer schedule that they post at the beginning of each year. I haven't had the Backyard Stout yet, but I have a bottle of it. Looking forward to getting into that one! Cheers!
~~~ DANGER WILL ROBINSON !!! DANGER !!! 17.2% Big Boy Beer. Initial reviews universally said BOOZY. I still have one or two left. Hoping the heat has subsided. Planned on sharing at a tasting. You are an animal trying to drink this solo LOL. Great review. CHEERS !!!
It took me about two hours to finish it, haha! Definitely a big boy beer, for sure. I can only imagine how boozy it was fresh because it's still gnarly. I think a few more years is needed, and sharing it like you plan on doing so = great idea. Still a damn delicious beer! Thanks, Gregory! Cheers, man!
How are you doing, though? I'm glad you're taking it day by day, dude. I'm sure the recovery has been long and frustrating, but keep pushing, brother! Cheers, Josh!
It's an amazing beer! A bit thin, and quite boozy, but the flavors are exquisite. I'd love to see how this one would age a few more years. I hope they re-brew it at some point again! Cheers, Rodney!
I see a bunch of old DFH stuff at my local shops, stuff that they haven’t released in years! A lot of it is like Raison D Extra or Fruitfull Fort, but I have seen a lot of old Utopias aged stuff as well, just haven’t pulled the trigger. Now that I’m seeing your reviews, I might just have to! Cheers, Joe!
They still have Raison D'Extra? Man, I'd love to find one of those and review it. Love that beer! I'd recommend grabbing a single bottle of DFH's "danger cap" beers and trying them out. It's an experience, that's for sure! Cheers, Michael!
Love me those danger caps! Man, I'd love to see the Raison D'Extra again! Had it once and it was amazing! Maybe they'll re-brew it again one day. Cheers!
This is a fun one for sure. I expected you to go a little bit lower with the booziness and body, but that probably speaks to how much you enjoyed the flavor. I’ve never had World Wide Stout somehow but this sounds great. Although a big time sipper you take your time with. Happy NFL opening day by the way! 🏈
I think I would've went a bit lower if not for the flavors being amazing. That said, I don't think I'd hold the booziness against it only because of the ABV. It's expected. It was a bit harsh, but smoothed out as my palate acclimated. Can't believe you never had WWS, but then again, I know you're not a huge stout guy. I hope they re-brew it again someday! Chiefs sneak by with a win. Crazy last play, eh? Cheers, Curtis!
@@averagejoe716 17% is quite a bit so that’s true it’s always going to be boozy to some degree. Still sounds really good though. Regarding WWS, Ohio had a limit for years I think at 12-13% or something for beer, which was ridiculous considering I could just buy liquor or wine if I wanted. I don’t recall seeing it on the shelves at all and by the time we probably got it Dog Fish Head wasn’t king of the hill anymore and there were a million other really good breweries so it slipped through the cracks for me. I’m sure the base is really good though. Yeah the Chiefs pull it off yet again. They’re the new Patriots for sure.
Ah, yes ... the archaic laws of Ohio (and other states). I was friends with a pretty an old school BeerTuber named Johnny (Crafty Beer Reviews), and I remember that a few breweries back in the day complained about it (and rightfully so). I think Hoppin' Frog was one of those breweries pushing the limits a good 10-12 years ago. The base beer is worth trying at some point, as are the variants. Still a beast of a beer, and for a "shelfie" brewery, they still pump out some fun stuff. My brother is a huge Chiefs fan, and has been since the late 80s, so I was happy when they won SB LIV back in 2020. It had been 50 years since they won, so it was cool to see, and I was happy for my brother. That said, seeing them turn into a dynasty sucks. If the NFL didn't have a dynasty in recent years, I would've been somewhat OK with it, but as you alluded to with the Pats, we already dealt with a dynasty for the past 15-20 years. Plus, I lost some respect for Mahomes last year when he cried like a baby after that loss to the Bills with Toney lining up offside. It was the right call, and while I'm sure he was disappointed that it was called because it's something that doesn't get called all that often, complaining about it post-game to Josh Allen and other Bills players instead of just congratulating them on the win is ridiculous. Especially considering all the controversial calls the Chiefs get nowadays, especially the "holding" penalty against the Eagles in SB LVII that basically won them the SB.
@@averagejoe716 Yeah that law made no sense and I could see Hoppin’ Frog pushing that. They do some pretty high alcohol stuff. Your brother being a fan for that long is totally fine. He deserves it after waiting that long. It’s just the bandwagon fans that are annoying. Lol. Like all the Swifties hopping on that train last year. 😂 I totally agree with Mahomes last year in that call. It was extremely out of character for him and he was clearly wrong. I definitely don’t hate them at all. There’s just some fatigue with how things go that way. Like they were literally a toe away from losing. I’m absolutely not an “NFL is rigged” person in the slightest. It’s just like the universe wants everything to go their way all the time. Haha
Yeah, the bandwagon fans -- in any sport for any team -- always upset me, too. If you're a fan, you should be a fan. You shouldn't only root for them when they're winning. That's easy to do. Not a true fan. I'm still a huge Sabres fan despite them breaking my heart so many times that I've lost count. We haven't made the playoffs in 13 years, yet I watch every year and enjoy myself. They'll break the spell at some point, and when they do, the frustration and disappointment makes it worth it. As for Mahomes, I don't hate him, either. I just lost some respect because of that outburst. He hasn't faced much adversity in his career, so when he finally did, I felt like he showed his true colors. The constant whining at the ref is very Brady-like, too. Hate to see it. I'm also not an "NFL is rigged" person, but there are some questionable circumstances surrounding certain plays every single year. It does make you think, but I truly think it's just incompetent ref'ing most of the time. The fact that the NFL makes billions of dollars every single year, yet still have part-time refs is unreal to me. Like, spend a few more million dollars and try to make sure they're at their best. Stupid that they haven't done it yet.
Just the regular BBA World Wide Stout? I don't think so. I never remember even seeing it. I think I had the Oak-Aged Vanilla version, though. Cheers, Josh!
Wow, an entire case? I can totally see the allure. When is the last time you cracked one open? Curious as to your experience drinking them over the past three years, and how it's changed. Cheers, man!
@averagejoe716 1st time trying it was a chance encounter. I was driving around and needed a beer so I walked into an Irish bar/liquor store that was selling these for 5$ a bottle.. super steal deal! Once I tried it I was "this is one of the best stouts I've ever had".. found a reputable seller online shipping to Florida and took the plunge on a case! Tbh I prefer the flavor of them fresh. I had one about month ago and felt it wasn't tasting as good as the 1st year of tastings. I def have to revist 120.. I feel my palate has evolved and i've been enjoying barleywines as of late. Cheers!!
That is awesome, man! Nothing like finding a beer that you never knew you needed, then you end up loving it and buying a bunch of it. If your palate is evolving to the point where you like Barleywines, WATCH OUT! So many good ones out there. I think a 120 Minute IPA with like five years on it would be something you enjoy, haha! Utopias Barrel-Aged 120 Minute IPA tasted like a Barleywine of some sort, too.
Am I that predictable, Dominic, or do you agree with my assessment? I think the thing for me, at this point, is the barrel aging process clearly thins out beers a bit, it just matters how much. I don't think this one was incredibly thin or anything, but for a 17.2% ABV beer, it was certainly thin. Then again, I have to keep in mind it was aged for a year in Utopias barrels, so maybe I shouldn't hold that against it. Regardless, it's a delicious beer! Cheers!
Sign me up for this beer. My friends say to me that stout season is just around the corner and my reply is stout season is all year long. Cheers Joe 🍻
This sounds like a solid beer. I have never, ever, seen anything other than their 60,90 and 120. I'm kinda bummed. Cheers!
I'm definitely craving a danger cap brew after watching this! I still need to try the regular 120 minute and the Raison D'Extra.
Thank you for this review. I’ve been looking for Utopias WWS and 120 Minute for a while. Hoping to get lucky.
Glad you enjoyed the review, man! I hope you get a chance to try it at some point. Such a fun and delicious beer.
Cheers!
Abeeradaywithtk and I actually reviewed this back in 2021. I would love to try this aged.
I might have to dive back into the archives to watch that review. Can only imagine how intense and boozy this was fresh.
Cheers, buddy!
