Another fantastic video! High quality production, approachable topic, and great sense of humor. I think this video highlights why so many people say they don't like Pinot Noir, because they're having cheap or manufactured Pinot. Of course, with some great searching, you can find some quality Pinot for under $30, but it will have to be at your local wine shop, not Trader Joe's. Would love to see you explore Costco wines more! I hear some the Kirkland labels can be really good for the price, including the Oakville, Gigondas, and Barolo.
THANK YOU! I totally agree!! Quality pinot is sooo tough to find at lower prices (especially in a supermarket-like context). I am going to make you very happy. I have literally all 3 of those Kirkland signature wines in my cooler right now! They are earmarked for future videos! Welcome to UA-cam, Dustin! Great content, and I happily subscribed to your channel. Please go on with this series. It's "easy" to taste and talk about high-end wine, but such content has little value for a wide audience. It's much more useful to learn about good value wines. I think you chose a great niche so far. I noticed you sometimes ask your audience for suggestions for future videos. For my layman palate, there are several decent cheap red Italian wines at TJ. I believe red Italian TJ wines would make for an interesting video. I expect fewer wines to end up in the D-F range. Cheers!
Thank you so much for all of your encouragement and support!! I’m so happy this video was valuable for you! I love your idea too!! I will definitely explore Italian red wines from TJs! Consider it done!

Sorry for commenting only 4 mins in but the color of US Pinot is also dependant on what other grapes are blended in. Only 75% legally needs to be the varietal on the label and it is common practice to blend in a bit of Petit Syrah or something else for color. Meiomi is known to do this and that wine is a war crime
Hahahahahaha. This was such a joy to read. You were so helpful and insightful up front - truly great reminder on the US 75% varietal labeling laws and how much blending a touch of petite Syrah, (I call it the Batman of grapes), will change the final tint. Then you just subverted all of my expectations and absolutely destroyed Meiomi. I love that these compliments have turned into a public roast of Meiomi. So obviously, it sucked for me in the tasting. But what’s been your experience with it? lol how did Meiomi hurt you?
Great reviews! I worked at TJ’s for 10 years, focusing on the wines. Your reviews perfectly reflect the misery I had selling TJ wines. BTW, the Belle Gloss is the same company that makes Meiomi.
Oh man! I’m so sorry you had to try to navigate this Pinot mine field with your customers. It really was a desert. It was more or less luck whether the bottle was passable. Were there any TJ wines that you felt were good that were easy to recommend? I’d love to take a peek at them for a future video! Also, thank you for the insight on Meiomi owning Belle Gloss. It kinda hurts my heart a bit to hear that since Belle was the only one that had any character in this tasting. Clearly that means Meiomi KNOWS how to produce some decent wine but they are choosing not to for their own production. Wild! Thank you so much for watching and sharing your thoughts with me. I really appreciate it!!
So I did spit off camera, but actually the correct method is not to completely spit out all of the wine. The correct method is to reduce the amount of wine that you ingest by spitting. This is important because you do need to drink some of it to give a full review of the experience of drinking the wine. In an ideal world, one would spit out about 75% of each taste. But I always err on the side of booze so I try to spit out half of it or less!
Thanks, Scoots! Just to reframe here - I literally bought 21 bottles of wine and your takeaway is that the correct pronunciation of a single word is the main value of this video. Sick!

@@wineguydustin it is always interesting to see wines from Spain, as that is about 90% of what I drink. But I imagine a lot of the viewers here would be americans, so they might not think that it would as interesting...
Man, your comments are hilarious, sorry you had to withstand so much suffering. I’m not a big pinot lover, but was curious to hear your take on the Belle Glos Alturas. I agree with your rating. It is bold and concentrated, unlike the delicate and supple Burgundies, but it has character (and does not smell like butthole 😅). Helping you to get to 3 subscribers! Cheers!

It definitely feels like “is anyone going to even watch this?!” So I’m incredibly thankful that you tuned in and even more that you liked it! Now onto subscriber number 4!
One more comment (after working 10 years at TJ’s), TJ’s is a good place to discover many different wines from many corners of the globe. In general, none of the wines are spectacular, but for a few bucks you can discover a drinkable Aglianico and then discover a drinkable GSM. My every day goal was to convince a wine buyer to try something new they haven’t tried. Based on my palate, I gained a great following amongst the customers.
That’s amazing! I really appreciate the approach you took! I can only imagine how satisfying it was to introduce someone to something ENTIRELY new. A GSM is an awesome example of that! I actually bought a few GSMs from TJs and Costco last week. I’m thinking of maybe putting together a vs video with them. What do you think about that idea?
@ That comparison sounds great. TJ’s has some GSM wines with no GSM on the label (Tenebres & Pontificis), while they also have a few under their own labels of different qualities. Costco had a few great GSM wines, but they come and go. TJ’s also has a few hidden gems that may qualify as a GSM with the Spanish Satis Dei (Syrah and Garnacha).
Subscribed!!!! I hope this channel takes off. I've always thought a UA-cam channel like this about wine was a no-brainer. You say you're "snobby," but you're not snobby because you are tasting these very seriously. It would be more snobby/dismissive to judge these wines *less* seriously because they are from trader Joe's. There is drinking in pinot noirs in this price range; I just wish you could have found it here. Off the top of head, Louis Jadot Bourgogne is widely available and great value for ~$20-25. You're too kind on Meiomi, though, labelling it as a "beginner pick.". Even if very beginners like it, it's not a good wine. Whether people will like it is a different question than whether the wine is good or bad... and Meiomi is bad. I may like an Adam Sandler comedy film and find it funny, but judging those movies on things that critics look for, such as plot and cinematography, they fall flat. I do wish at the end there was a little bit of a wrap-up though. A few final recommendations at different price ranges of the best and worst. It seemed like "Moon X" was the winner for super cheap pinot noir, but maybe none of these were worth recommending? I would like a bit more talk after you know the price of each bottle. Which wine is good value for money and which ones to stay away from.
Whoa! This was such an incredible, thoughtful, and helpful comment!! I really appreciate the feedback! I definitely will work in more wrap ups and summaries at the end. My concern though is that the video is already 30 mins long. Do you think it will be negatively impacted if I add these segments? I’m worried if the watch time is 35 or 40 mins I might start losing people. Curious of your thoughts? Thank you so much for your support!!
I enjoy several of TJ Brand wines. The Chilean Platinum reserve is excellent value (San Pedro Sidderal actually). Their SLH and San Luis Obispo PN were ok too. I enjoy finding wines there because they are good everyday drinkers that keep me from pulling and pouring in my cellar. Good luck to you on your new channel.
Thank you so much for sharing! I have a bottle of the Chilean platinum reserve in my cooler for a future video!! I’m excited to stack it up against a few other bottles. Let me know if you have any suggestions of what you’d like to see in that face off!
Great video again! However I am curious if you have palate or nose fatigue when you say some wines smell like nothing. Either way, subscribed and enjoying the content
Thank you so much for the encouragement and support! That’s an awesome question too! So, I’ve read quite a bit about this. There is no doubt that palate fatigue is a real thing. Professional wine critics actually struggle quite a bit with it. But from what I’ve read that tends to more be more of an issue when attending a massive wine tasting conference where upwards of 100 wines are being served AND they are different varietals (so the loud wines end up taking away from the experience tasting the quiet wines). In this case, considering the total number at 21 and all the wines being Pinot Noirs, I don’t think palate fatigue is too much of an issue. Of course, this sounds like it could be a great premise for a video! I could test how long it takes for palate fatigue to kick in. What do you think about that idea?
Thank you so much for your encouragement and for the great suggestion! This is probably the #1 piece of feedback. I will definitely be including conclusions at the end of my future videos. Thank you so much!!
Kinda wondered if the video was going to be retitled “This is a weak C and I’d pay no more than 10 bucks for this Pinot” at one point in the middle… 😅 Gee seemed like a slog - the king of grapes! Great video though, enjoyed it even if none of the brands make much sense from Australia! 🇦🇺 Mind you, the colour/transparency of the wines didn’t make too much sense either until I read the first 75% blending comment! Yikes…have only had imported “fine” wine from the USA that seems a bit more legit with their blending 😂. Keep up the good work! 👏🏼
hahahahaha you and me both! It felt like I was lost at sea for a while there… I hope this video doesn’t turn you off from trying fine wine from the US. We really do have world class wines from places like California, Oregon, and Washington. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like any of them are sold at Trader Joe’s hah. Thank you so much for the support and encouragement! It feels very inspiring to hear the video was helpful for people around the world!!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for the kind words too! I absolutely will put together a Cab video! I’m not sure if you’ve seen it, but I have posted a very similar video testing TJs Bordeauxs. These are primarily Cabernets, so it might be an interesting one for you to check out!!
wow, like others said: a video of this quality with so few subscribers?! Mate best of luck, this channel could blow up! Solid editing, solid host, great pacing - felt engaged through the whole thing! Only point is, maybe raise the camera a bit on the "side look" it just seems really "angled" which is a bit odd
I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to share these incredibly kind words. They mean the world to me!! I am feeling so inspired and energized - thank you!! Also, AWESOME call out on the second camera. It seemed weird to me too! It was one of those things where I kinda convinced myself that it wasn’t an issue. You know one of those “I’m probably just overthinking it” types of things. So I’m really glad you said it so I can fix it for my next shoot!! I really value your feedback! Please let me know if you have any thoughts on the type of video I should tackle next!
@@wineguydustin Pleasure is all mine! Coming out of Denmark myself and seeing natural wines on a heavy rise in popularity - I think it could be a really cool subject to touch on, what it is, what to expect and by all means: compare to regular wines.
I'm looking forward to your content. I love learning about wines from everywhere but it is difficult. That is one of the reasons I travel: to learn more about different cultures and wine.
Wow! Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm so glad to hear you enjoy learning about different cultures and wines when you travel. I have been considering a segment where I do a travel show to a wine region like Burgundy. Would that be interesting to you? Do you have any suggestions on what would make it a good video? Thank you so much!
@@wineguydustin Videos about travel to wine regions are great. It would especially be interesting to learn more about how to actually visit other wineries in other regions. It's easy in the US, but not as easy outside of US.
After watching the full vid :) Loved the video, you are very funny, snappy clean editing and you are clearly solid at tasting. Format was good and very much appreciate you slogging through a pile of shit for the viewers, probably useful reviews for many consumers in the US. Would have maybe liked a short section at the end where you present some conclusions you made from reviewing the results of the tasting. IE brand x underpreformed, never spend under y, dont buy pinot in supermarket but if you have to get wine a or b etc. Also because you mention the house brand in the intro its nice to give your thoughts seperately at the end after knowing what it is. Not super important but its nice to have a sort of ending or payoff imo. 2 small questions. Did you know for the blind tasting that everything was in order from cheap to expensive or was the tasting order random and edited to be that way in the video? What is your background in wine? I see that in one video you call yourself a sommelier but more specifically like any WSET/COS stuff or years of fine dining experience? I dont doubt your knowledge would just love to know. Very entertaining and good quality content. Will be following in the future
Aw buddy thank you so much for all of the feedback and the encouragement! I’m so glad the full video hit home for you! I definitely am going to work on adding more summaries and conclusions into my videos. This feedback has come up a few times so I want to make sure I give folks what they’re looking for! As for the other questions, no I did not know the order when I actually tasted them. I tasted them in real life in a completely random order. For example, belle glos was actually the second wine I tasted. So it’s a true blind tasting! I just edited it to be cheap to expensive to give the video some better progression! Second, my cert is with the Master Court. I’m no industry professional, though. I’m a hobbyist. My actual career is in corporate consulting not working in the hospitality industry. I fell in love with wine many years ago and have always felt like more people could fall in love with it like I have if only the culture around it was less snobby and complicated. So I want to try to change that!
@@wineguydustin Really loving the engagement. The way you planned the blind tasting is actually fantastic. It makes the tasting random for you but provides structure for the viewer. Impressed you thought of this as no big blind tasting channels are doing that(yet). Feel free to treat yourself to some good wine in the next video, you've earned it ;P
I’m so glad you appreciate that! It’s definitely a lot of extra work to pull it off. I really want to make sure that the end result is a high quality review that the audience can use to make informed decisions for themselves. If even one person discovers a great value wine that they wouldn’t have checked out otherwise then this whole thing is definitely worth it to me!
I know that wines vary from store to store but could you give me a list, however short of GS wines that you find interesting? Even if it is just a couple. Thank you so so much for the kind words and the encouragement! It means so much to me! I’m more than happy to help provide a couple grocery store highlights! After commenting I did an exhaustive 3 minute search and I can state, quite unconfidentiality, that nobody has done a thorough review of the line here on UA-cam.
Hi there! You did some pretty good video editing. But most of all I enjoyed your review of these wines. You're doing a great job, although I was pretty surprised, that some got the same grade even though your reaction was quite different. I don't know much about wine, my "dealer" just keeps me trying some stuff and he's pretty good in guessing what I'm liking, I guess. Although I'm a bit hesitant in trying the really pricy wines. ^^
Thank you so much for the kind words! I really appreciate it! Also, I love the term “wine dealer.” That made me laugh out loud! There is a non-zero chance I may say it in a future video. Thank you so much for watching!!
Thank you so much watching for commenting! I love Portugese wine too! I could make an argument that it’s the most underrated wine region on Earth… perhaps that’s a future video idea? Either way, stay tuned, I’ve got a video coming soon featuring some portugese wine! Thank you again for your support! It means the world to me!!
I honestly didn’t expect to find an A. But I didn’t expect to find so many Cs and Ds. I thought the overall average of this group would be closer to a C+ or B-. It seemed in reality like it was closer to a D or C-. One big one win though was finding that Moon X bottle! It was tied for second place and costs only $7! So I definitely recommend it! Otherwise, I think I would cheat a bit and recommend a Beaujolais Nouveau like Louis Jadot if I was limited to only $10. It’s a cheat because even though it’s from burgundy, it’s made with gamay instead of Pinot noir (wines from burgundy are typically Pinot noir). I think these are bangin wines for $10!
Kind of like bad desert that isn’t worth the calories, free wine that is bad is not worth the headache and indigestion unless maybe you need to forget something in your life.
Really enjoyed the video (and subscribed). Just want to say it’s a little disconcerting, though, that you gave a wine that smelled like a butthole a C.
Hahahahhaha but it didn’t smell like just any butthole! It smelled like one we aspire to smell! I feel like that’s gotta count for something?!? Tell me I’m not alone here!
I have tried several of these wines, and I agree with almost every word. most of these resemble cough syrup. and none of these wines actually impress. trader joes excels at cheaper italians and portuguese wines. some of the GSMs are worth seeking out. don't touch any of the more expensive Bordeaux ($20+) wines. simply not worth it. it's unfortunate that the more expensive wines don't over-deliver at trader joe's. never buy pinot from this place. it's just a good rule of thumb.
PREACH! 🙏 I’m so glad you had a similar experience tasting these wines. I feel like we should get “Never buy TJs Pinot” tattoos. You know just a way to never forget our shared trauma
I think in the microcosm that is the Trader Joe’s near my house in Austin - this is a true statement. Do not go there and buy Pinot for less than $40 (except for maybe the $7 one that was pretty good! The Moon X!)
Honestly, that is about the state of it these days. Pinot has by far the worst QPR of any varietal but also reaches the highest highs in terms of quality.

Thanks for taking one for the team, lol
hahaha it was a privilege and an honor to serve my platoon
@ that makes total sense. Thanks for answering! I would totally watch that video of figuring out when wine fatigue hits!
"what makes this soooo, pretty good"😂😂😂
Hahahaha it was like I was channeling Hemingway or something!
Interesting video; hope your channel has lots of success! Would recommend a little bit of summary at the end but looks like you got wined out.
Thank you so much for your encouragement and for the great suggestion! This is probably the #1 piece of feedback. I will definitely be including conclusions at the end of my future videos. Thank you so much!!
Awesome! Look forward to it!
It felt like I was lost at sea for a while there…
I hope this video doesn’t turn you off from trying fine wine from the US. We really do have world class wines from places like California, Oregon, and Washington. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like any of them are sold at Trader Joe’s hah.
Thank you so much for the support and encouragement! It feels very inspiring to hear the video was helpful for people around the world!!
Entertaining. The only wine we buy at Trader Joe is Vino Verde.
lol I’m learning that might be the only safe bet at TJs 😬
Well done, funny & entertaining.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I’m really glad the video was fun and valuable for you!
@@wineguydustin - Cheers!
Super fun to watch! I’d love to see one with Whole Foods wines!
I know you’re legally obligated to enjoy my videos, but I still love hearing you say it!
This was great, I'd love to see something similar for their Cabs. Thanks for sharing this!
@@wineguydustin Just checking it out now. Thanks! I'm always looking for a unicorn (budget bottle that is an A+) Thanks.
wow, like others said: a video of this quality with so few subscribers?!
I absolutely LOVE this idea! Natural wines seem to be having quite a moment on the world stage. I’d love to explore this too! Consider it done!
Wait, this is a small channel. i thought i was watching some pro . I've been chuckling the whole video because of the descriptions u give
Thank you so so much for the kind words and for the support! Hopefully I’ll turn pro soon 🥹
Andre Mack with more attitude. Thanks for doing this so i don't have to. Nice job.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I hope one day Andre and I get to make a video together! I think we might have some funny chemistry together.
Im orange to happy to see you, keep up the good work! 🍊
Thank you so much, buddy! I am orange to happy to see you enjoyed the video!!
Just reading this title made me shudder. Belle Glos... C'mon man, that's too easy. LOL
Hahahaha I’m so glad you know what I was going through! 1 bottle of TJ’s pinot is arguably too much to begin with. 21 is just… *sigh*
Complements, oranges, appreciate you grinding thru those
Hahaha I am orange happy you appreciated it!
I know that wines vary from store to store but could you give me a list, however short of GS wines that you find interesting? Even if it is just a couple.
I am on a fixed income plus i live out in the country and am unable to get to proper wine stores..
As far as variety,i like it all..
Amazing channel!
You are going to go far here on youtube i think.
You have a great vibe.
Thank you so so much for the kind words and the encouragement! It means so much to me!
I’m more than happy to help provide a couple grocery store highlights! My quick disclaimer is that I haven’t made a video about this yet, so I’m sure once I dive in properly I’ll have better recommendations. But if I was in a grocery store right now to buy wine, these are a few picks that I think really stand out in terms of the competition!
Educated Guess Cabernet Sauvignon
The Prisoner Red Blend
Decoy Merlot
Moet and Chandon Champagne
Hopefully this helps!!
@wineguydustin awesome,it does.
I just subscribed so I have not had a chance to look at your catalog yet but I have a video idea..
Other channels have reviewed various GS wines, like trader Joe's and kirkland from Costco but I have not seen anyone do a complete review of Aldi's Specially Selected line of wines.. I would absolutely love to see your opinion on it..
A few are apparently seasonal and may be harder to find.. I have 2 aldi's near me,between the two stores I have found all but 1 of the wines.
Uco Valley Malbec
Alto Adige PG
Cotes de Provence rose
Marlborough SB
Napa cab sauv
Rioja reserva
Barossa Valley Shiraz
DOCG Prosecco
Sparkling Brut Rose
Icewine VQA Montreal
Willamette valley PN
Chianti Reseva
There may be others in the line that I am unaware of..
I just subscribed 10 mins ago and I am already trying to steer your channel!😅
After commenting I did an exhaustive 3 minute search and I can state, quite unconfidentiality, that nobody has done a thorough review of the line here on UA-cam.
This is an AWESOME idea. I will for sure tackle this in a future video! Thank you so much for the suggestion!!
Even better!!! Awesome! I’m happy to do it!
ありがとう❤こんにちは👋😃I'm from Japan. Thank you everything. I love portugal wine port wine is the best. I love portugal.
@wineguydustin Thank you everything. From Japan with Love.
no way this guy only has 500 subs
I fucking love you
Did you expect an A in this group? What would be a $10 Pinot recommendation
@@wineguydustinYour matrix certainly disproves that quality goes up with price. Really enjoyed your approach. Thanks.
I’m shocked by the quality of this video. I’m assuming 100k subs by next month!
You truly just made my day! Thank you so much for the encouragement and support! It means the world to me!!!
Kind of like bad desert that isn’t worth the calories, free wine that is bad is not worth the headache and indigestion unless maybe you need to forget something in your life.
I totally agree! That is an excellent metaphor! Sometimes free wine, like dessert, just isn’t worth the calories.
@ well, when you put it that way, damn near makes me want to go buy it just to smell it 😂
I have tried several of these wines, and I agree with almost every word. most of these resemble cough syrup. and none of these wines actually impress. trader joes excels at cheaper italians and portuguese wines. some of the GSMs are worth seeking out. don't touch any of the more expensive Bordeaux ($20+) wines. simply not worth it. it's unfortunate that the more expensive wines don't over-deliver at trader joe's. never buy pinot from this place. it's just a good rule of thumb.
PREACH! 🙏 I’m so glad you had a similar experience tasting these wines. I feel like we should get “Never buy TJs Pinot” tattoos. You know just a way to never forget our shared trauma
So don't buy Pinot for less than $40?
I think in the microcosm that is the Trader Joe’s near my house in Austin - this is a true statement. Do not go there and buy Pinot for less than $40 (except for maybe the $7 one that was pretty good! The Moon X!)
Honestly, that is about the state of it these days. Pinot has by far the worst QPR of any varietal but also reaches the highest highs in terms of quality.
unemployedwineguy2 but without the irony
Aw thank you! That’s a great compliment!
