It’s less a matter of TIME and more a matter of PRIORITY. If there was any tangible “value” to playing guitar, then I would prioritize it higher, and magically have more time.
OMG, your
little boy is the spittin' image of his daddy! What a beautiful family David. You're blessed my friend.
i find that after a 14 hr day it's not the best time for the grey matter and spirit to be inspired.... i'm finally a very beginner after all these years.... and thanks to youtube
Sneaky, David. Very, very sneaky....😉
I was interested in getting your take on progress--but it was just a teaser to some video that doesn't seem to be posted.
I'm 48. I started learning metallica songs at 14. I also learned how to strum chords and sing country songs. I never learned to play leads. I was really good at learning other people's ideas and playing them. Eventually that ran it's course and I wanted to branch out and learn things that were more sophisticated. I learned a few things really quickly. My hands are a smaller than I noticed becasue I was playing two finger power chords all the time. Secondly, and worse of all in my opinion, I don't think I have any creativity. I spent time learning scales and other things but try as I may I could never put it all together in to something that made sense and sounded good. I've been trying to learn ambient guitar but I just keep playing the same triads all the time and some of these pedals need a four year degree in rocket science to use. I don't know where to go from here.
Hello David, I’m just starting out and have some questions. Do you reply to your subscribers questions?
Thanks, Anthony
How did Richard determine that 20% is the percentage of the stuff we practice that's important? Please show me the math.
oh gawd -thanx for the blu bawls
Im not saying that I made an immense progress but songwriting is what motivates me lately to play the guitar more. Before, I was just mindlessly noodling my time away - no intention or purpose and it got me bored for years until I started writing my own stuff. It may not be the best of the best but what matters to me is that I know I am moving forward to something else and finally out of rut.
Well, I'm still not really that good. 30 years playing off and on noodling was my demise. Practicing often on a schedule is a MUST. If it's boring playing slow, you're probably still trying to play to fast. Really learn the song, lick, scale, etc. to its fullest. UA-cam can be of help or a discouragement. Personally, I get easily discouraged watching a 10-year-old play something I've tried playing for years, haha. Life interrupts and unfortunately that's just the way it is. For me, the passion and just the ability to play anything at all is pretty cool. Good luck, it's a rollercoaster.
I don't think of it as progress. I think of it as evolution.
Scales are important to practice?
Yes definitely but only if you do it the right way. Don’t just learn scales for the sake of learning skills, start making music with them right away and focus on the skills you like the sound of!

More important things than guitar?
your 20% are my 100%.....🤣
Pretty douchy.
That's why I prefer to learn from Jimmy Page: "Focus on your soul, not on the guitar... Never! - Scale is something that I've never used."
😌
