Ohhh our big habit was just believing that everyone has debt and not realizing that if we had just saved up and then buy, it would have set us up for success.
Most of the habit you mentioned in your video, I was guilty of the same thing. Lately, since I have been watching my spending, I cannot get over how badly I spent. I am doing better at saving now that I watch videos, such as yours. It helps with the mind set. Thank you ❤
This brought tears to me and for a reason I wasn't expecting. When you started the video about people thriving on lower incomes, I thought, yea but I'm a single HH retired and I'm even lower. Talk about clueless, I have a small annuity with my SS and it does come out on the top half of your totals. What is wrong with me?? I continue to live in the spend now and move money from one category to another to cover, which explains why I'm carrying CC debt over into next month. I have to get a handle on this, and I have no excuse. I'm wasting too much! 😭 Thank you for making me look at reality.
Great video! I was a professional shopper, lol. If it was on sale, I was being frugal. Plus, I was using a store credit card to get their benefits and not pay off the balance every month. I got us into a lot of credit card debt. I was handling the bills, so my husband was totally unaware of our mounting debt. When I talked to him about the situation, he asked if I wanted him to take over paying the bills with both of us looking over the monthly budget. I was so relieved. We paid off the credit cards in just a few months and cut them up. We kept one but paid it off monthly. This was in the 90s. We had time to save and contribute to his 401k before he retired. He retired at age 56 but continued to work as an independent contractor for 10 years. That allowed us to pay off the house, buy new cars, add to his 401k, and become debt-free. I would still have lapses in frugality, but nothing that couldn't be paid in a month. I've learned so much from you, and I am encouraged by you daily. Love to all, Linda 💕
I can so relate to the beginning of you comment until the part when I discussed with my husband. I would have loved to do it together, but he was either he do it or me. I think he thought it was just easier for only 1 of us, so I kept it and got worse before ever got better. I'm so glad it worked for you.
@debbie1483 My husband does it all, but we talk about the budget and see what's coming up. I just assume I can't buy anything, lol. My husband tells me I have a "mad money" account to use however I want, but I'd rather save it for Christmas or other gift giving occasions. It is easier if one person does the bill paying, in my opinion. I hope you'll be able to handle it without too much stress. ☺️
Dawn, you hit the nail on the head! Wise words you have spoken. I too have learned to say, "No!" Friends and family were selling Avon, Tupperware, Picture Selling, Wine Selling, Clothes, Magazines, etc. We were in our 20's-30's! People were selling it all and we were buying it all! 🤦♀️ And shopping at the Malls every weekend! We made name brands and fashion Stores wealthy by blowing too much money! 🌬💸💵💸 As I watch Dallas play Taxas, I got a kick out of your vlog cause it's true!! Just say, "No" 😅🏈
i said no to my nephews when they sold boy scout wreaths at 35 a pop...i could not afford it. Also pies that were $25 or more....i know i did not score anyi points with their mother---my sister and i think she held a grudge and still does. I say no to jewelry parties, tupperware parties and things like that and i know one friend got mad at me saying no. I do not waver. So i have a few "enemies" out there....i am too broke to people please, fixed income.
If those folks hold grudges because you can’t afford to spend money on those things, then they’re not worth having in your life. If they loved you and cared about you, then it wouldn’t matter.
When I got married in 1984, I was frugal, and there were times I worked 2-3 jobs and my hubby took on extra work as well JUST to not go into debt and use credit cards and let the banks get extra of our hard earned money. BUT, we didn’t save either. We could have, but didn’t.
I undermine myself with being reactive to the news of shortages, reports of upcoming 60% tariffs, etc. I am having to get a grip on my subconscious fears, and remind myself I have more than I need, and I have prepared enough. I will be fine, I know how to adapt, I have to trust myself. That is a mantra I play in my mind, and it is helping.
I think when I was younger when friends had those Tupperware party. makeup or home decor parties. I think now not doing meal planning consistently and letting food go bad.
The habit that kept me broke was going to thrift stores twice a week looking for things to buy that I did not really need. Retail therapy ? That will waste a lot of your money. I quit that bad habit and am now doing fine -:)
Buying books 😞 I love to read and my local library often doesn't stock the type of books I like. I tend to buy used books online, thinking I'm being frugal, but now my 'To Be Read' list is getting out of hand. My goal now is to read the books I actually own, before buying anymore.
@@ginnykeir1396 Our local thrift store had all their books at .10 cents each !!! I found 2… my husband found about a dozen. But I have probably 25-35 books I still need to read.

Seeing things on UA-cam ads that seem like I need them... that they'd make my life so much more easier. For years, we ate out too much. I shudder to think about all the money we wasted eating in restaurants. We still eat out occasionally, but it is a rare treat now. Unfortunately, I can't help her feelings. But it certainly doesn't make sense for me to declutter plastic containers just to go to a party and buy more... silly. Not to mention the containers I decluttered cost me maybe $30 for four, the ones in this party book, one conatiner $52.... wow, did it clean itself too.
I use to watch home shopping TV. That was not good because you see it, you want it, and too easy to order. I nipped that in the bud. I plan on very limited spending after Christmas. I don’t need anything and my freezer and pantry are full. We’ll see how it goes for three months.
Grocery store sales , such as on food items or cleaning products or other items that I don't really need, but I sometimes I think I will try them instead of my usual that I buy
Something that’s tempting to me is to spend money on new a new hobby or exercise before considering if I had time or long-term interest in it. Now I try to finish a project before buying the next supplies, or start the exercise program with as little financial outlay as possible. Better equipment or supplies can be a reward for sticking to it.

Omg, not saying no about drinking coffees out or eating at fancy bakeries or eating out. Overdraft charges of say a dollar can end up costing a $35 overdraft on your bank account 😢
Student loans from graduate school and a low paying job sent me over the edge and turned my life around. I never wanted to have any bill collector come knocking on my door again. Even though I was not a high earner, I saved and invested like I had money. Lots and lots of sacrifices made to get where I am now 20 years later. The most effective thing I did was to track my net worth, a more successful method than just “budgeting” which to me makes it too easy to justify spending. I still don’t understand how you could not save for a “rainy day”. It isn’t like it is a new concept.
My habit of thinking that retirement was a long way away kept me from saving money. To me, in my 20's, 30's and 40's, saving to me meant "wasted money." I couldn't see a future until my 50's, when I got interested in investing in rental property. I spent too much money on being young and having fun.
In the past I always felt like I had to buy something because I walked into a store or someone's garage sale or at a farmers market, but now I can just walk away without purchasing something if I don't see anything that need. In the past I thought buying from places like Good Will was the only cheep place to but clothes, I didn't venture far from my routine, but then I found other stores. My cats of course are my big money grabbers, their food is anyways.
I live on $1200 a month. I am current in all my bills and have a pretty good savings. I always thought fashion in any way are a laugh. Nobody tells me what I should be wearing or doing. Most importantly, I am happy. I get by just fine
I thought the same thing "If I have paid all my bills, then the rest was mine to spend as I want" instead of saving for the future. I now prioritize what I will do with my money and my time. Thanks for sharing!
Years ago, when home parties were the thing (Tupperware, etc), I said no from the beginning. I just was up front & honest about finances were tight. I didn’t lose any friends over it. However, when it comes to one of our grandchildren, nieces or nephews, I will always buy from them. Fortunately, it’s not very often.
Early in life I was exposed to "NO is a complete sentence". However, I didn't use that wise advise til much later in life. These days I can say NO and do so without offering an excuse/reason. Better late than never. Good program today, Dawn😊
You are correct. We are not obligated to explain why we refuse to purchase an item or giving to a program. WE know our limits and that is our business.

What kept me broke was owning a house and a car - two things that require frequent, expensive maintenance and repair. Even though my house was brand new, there was always something and it was never cheap. My car was paid off but the cost of maintenance, repair, insurance, gas, parking, etc...was a big monthly expense. Now I rent a live/work space and work from home so my rent and utilities are tax-deductible, and I take public transportation everywhere or rent a car when I need to.
Not being able to resist buying new clothes has definitely been my downfall. I try to keep away from clothes shops but sometimes I see something I HAVE to have so I buy it, take it home, think about how much I actually need it, look at the minus in my bank account then 9 times out of 10 I return it. Not the best way to do it but it works for me.
Those parties where your expected to buy stuff are a horrible imposition, and I never go . I dont make excuses. I dont apologise. I dont explain. "No. Im sorry, but I dont attend that sort of thing." End of story. No. I dont want the catalog. I won't be buying anything at all. I know it pissed some people off, but honestly, I think it's nervy as hell to invite people to a "party" at your home and basically charge them so you can get free stuff. Its outrageous behavior, and they are the ones with the problem not me.
I would politely say, I’m sorry, but those things I don’t need and don’t fit into my budget. I never had anyone unfriend me or not talk to me again. It is what it is. I would hope if I did a party like that, that people would be honest.
@monikaw1369 - I am mad. I was invited for what I thought was coffee wirh a neighbor and right into an MLM pitch. Not okay. Very much not interested in friendships with a price tag.
Thinking we had to entertain every week. We did this in our younger days and wished we would have put at least half of that money in our savings account. Happy Monday everyone 🥰
We had a D&D group that met 2x a month for 12 years. For us, I think it saved money. Doesn't have to be expensive. Everyone brings something. Snack. Drink. Desert. Salad. Whatever. We didn't stop till we all had kids and life got hectic. Life got complicated.

I can read the anger in your post!
@cjhoward409 - Usually that works. But some people are pushy, don't take no for an answer and have a new scam product party every other month.
That happened to me to
Thinking we had to entertain every week.
I'm still trying to payoff last year. This year no one is going to get anything. So sorry
Not even me?😢
Janet Andrews hello from Virginia: Dawn that is very true my situation is a little different my mother-in law is 91 years old unlike your dad she has made some bad financial choices in her life .Her home is 108 years old, and she insist on living there but the problem is she can't afford it, my husband is the oldest of 6 children and she expects him to help with all her needs the home needs new windows, the basement floods because of a foundation problem , floors throughout the home are sagging needs electrical rewiring etc.. the list goes on and on however we have given a substantial amount to help but it has been comprising our finances .She refuses to move in with her daughter what would you do in this situation just curious?
stop !
You all have to do an intervention and let her know that your family isn't in any type of position to keep helping her financially.
Sounds like you might want to consider contacting Adult Protective Services and get an advocate going for her.
This would be a tough situation
I wish I had started my Savings account when I was younger,. Even if it was only 5 dollars a week. I always thought it had to be a big amount.
Same here
I always felt obligated to buy something (or LOTS of 'somethings'!!) no matter what house 'party' I attended or craft show, etc. I stopped attending because I didn't want to hurt the hostess' feelings by not buying anything. How ridiculous are we at times?! Another great video, Dawn!
Oh, yes! I've been there and done that!
Guilty as charged regarding over giving. Why is that!?! I wasn’t into keeping up appearances but helping kids and grandkids buys what everyone else has -guilty! I payed a scalper $1000 for an Xbox that my grandson had to have. How dumb am I?
Most of us have been there
In most areas… 35-45,000 is considered middle class. Not low income. I know some families that make it on half of that. 😮
Meal planning makes a huge difference in my budget
I wish this Jones had more money.
I keep going to Goodwill 😢 I am trying to reduce it to once a month.
