Friend looked at his driving, three miles a day, sold car, will take lyft & pay options, no insurance, no car payments, no gas, no repairs, no worries, told him if he needed me & could give him a ride.
In an emergency, perhaps a family emergency, and you have no car, and your friends just aren't available. - - you need to have a list of taxi companies. And hope they have someone free to pick you up. I had a threatening car breakdown a couple of months ago. Managed to get it to my mechanics. Car was full of food and other household shopping. . Find a taxi? None where I live. They phoned everywhere, no one available for hours. Mechanics contacted a customer who did private hire only - he came and rescued me. I'd rather feed my car then feed myself! It's my independence, being able to get to family and friends who aren't on public transport routes, gets me to hospital, optical and dental appointnents. It's the one thing I cannot do without. There is a neighbour who can be available if needed, but he's out and about as often as I am.. Family emergency in the middle of the night? I'm not going to wake him up. Personal Transport is so necessary these days when family members move out of the area. .
I drive 1.3 miles to one job, 1.8 miles to the other. One of my jobs is the grocery store, so I drive about 2,000 miles a year. Sometimes I wonder if having a car is worth the cost, but the cost is low because I only need an oil change once a year, probably will never have to change break fluid, trans fluid etc because of how little I drive. It also gets 105 degrees here in the summer with 70%+ humidity. Walking and biking is not an option 11 months out of the year.
I remember I bought 3 or 4 can openers at dollar tree because they kept breaking. Then I finally bought a decent one and I've been using it for at least 10 years.
Our podiatrist referred us to a shoe store that specializes in shoes for foot issues. They actually measured our feet! My husband found a pair of sneakers he liked and I found a pair of shoes and dress boots. We paid $67 for the 3 pair and saved over $200 because they were on clearance!
I was born in '44, so before the war ended. Post war was a time of no option but to be frugal. Here in UK meat came off rationing in 1954. So I learned from growing up in austere times.
I have a cashmere and wool coat, paid for it 450€ 10 years ago. Still beautiful, warm, stylish. I take it to dry cleaners off season, I changed lining 2 times at tailor… this is my only coat and I don’t see myself replacing is any time soon.
Well done! I have a long wool coat from 1994 that’s still going strong. It’s worn on Sunday to go to church so it gets light use. It hasn’t even needed new buttons and it still fits.
I have been frugal since I was a teenager. These habits have stayed with me till now. Your are right that frugality does not mean being cheap. You can also be generous with others, as well being frugal. Many think frugal people are selfish and stingy.
Spices help me stay on budget. I love spicy foods. I used the oil that was left from frying onions, added sea salt, curry powder and other spices to make a paste. I store it in the refrigerator. I add a little spoonful to potatoes when I am frying them or eggs for a budget friendly fast flavor boost.
I listened to one of your older videos. Stopped using clothes dryer, no dishwasher, unplugged everything not in use. I live in Fl. but did not use AC all day long, No lights when it is light, use natural light. My electric is now only $46.00 a month while neighbors are paying $300.00! I live on only $15.00 to $20.00 a week on groceries. Soups, stews, beans, rice. pastas. Got rid of cable, still having problems with car and house insurance. Thank you.
Really appreciate you guys. I have decided to do a no buy year in 2025 (I will be shopping my home and see what can go and what can be used more). I have wasted food and spent too much time and money eating out...time for change... you will be one of my mentors! Be well!
I make a big kettle of water. My kettle and my old school coffee percolator fit on the same large stove eye. When I make my tea, I put the remaining hot water in a 24 hour thermos. The water is still hot enough later in the day or even the next day for tea. I have one of those thermoses for hot water and coffee. The coffee goes in the other thermos. I like iced coffee, too. So, I only make coffee every 2 or 3 days or I can take my own coffee on a road trip. I bought the thermoses 5ish years ago. They have been a great investment.
I love & wear Sketchers tennis shoes. I usually buy them from Kohl's. I wait until Kohl's has 30% off coupon. My shoe size has not changed so I can buy & keep a back up pair. As soon as I start wearing the new pair I look for the sale and/or 30% coupon. Most brand names like Levi and Nike do not honor the 30% off coupon at Kohl's. However, Sketchers does honor the discount. Yay! That's a win for me.
I pride myself as being frugal and watching for charges on my checking account statement but missed that my bank stopped crediting the monthly maintenance fee to me. I was told that once my remaining mortgage went below 22,000 ( yay!!) they stopped reversing the 24.95 monthly fee.... yikes. I just got a credit for the 3 months that I missed and changed the account to a low fee account that is not charged if you meet certain requirements ( which I will easily do). Be vigilant and even if you miss it ask that it be reversed.
Hope, my 1980's girlfriend & her husband, Santa Claus, professional, found a brand new lift recliner on curb, owner said they could not get it to work, they found all was wrong you had to push a button on backside. She & Santa visited me in hospital from San Antonio when I had my heart operation. The best value in life is friends.
@sharondavis3535 I don't know what the brand is. I live out of Eugene, OT and they have s Burches outlet store that carries a more high quality shoe and I walk on the outside of my heal so they have shoes with soles that can keep your foot more level. I also have extra wide foot so have to buy men's shoes to fit.
I use rubbing spices & such to perk up my popcorn, looking forward to Amish Pickle spice I bought off Ebay. Eating lots more popcorn & some spices can also be used for dips.
Great share guys. Over the years, even though we have found more and more ways to reduce our grocery spending, we kept our grocery budget the same. At the end of the month, we move any excess to our sinking funds, but it also gives the freedom to stock up on great deals when we find them. 🙌 I agree that if you allow yourself to go over for stock up prices, you’ll probably do that every month.
Hello Larry and hope can you do a video on finding cheap fresh produce like fruits and vegetables I know meats expensive but I alright figured that out I'd also think a video on how to properly freeze raw fruits and vegetables would be helpful to some viewers I mean I like fresh but learning to freeze to stop wasting would be nice too. Thank you
I was thinking, at the beginning of the video, if you had read any of Amy Dacyzyn’s books and then BOOM! Your B Roll showed you reading the same book I have!!?? 😂🙌🏻-Nikki
Would love to hear more about how you meal plan around markdowns. I currently meal plan around the weekly ad and what I have on hand. I try to allow for a little extra in the grocery budget based off markdowns but I feel like I always spend too much or end up with too much food, and inevitably some gets thrown away. Do you make part of your meal plan based off the ad and the rest based off markdowns? Would love more insight into how you do this.
I have the same "Complete Tightwad's Gazette", a little the worse for wear... I had originally read Amy Dacyczyn's books from the library, and found the complete book at a discount book store!
Larry, please do a tutorial video, showing us how to buy a used iphone on Backmarket, and then how to set it up once it arrives. The "set it up" step is my hesitancy in buying a used phone from that platform.
How do we “stay ahead” or in the know about food? I don’t like the fear mongering so I steer away from that but like to keep my pantry full for job loss etc.
We have been very sucessful buying more quantity of fewer different skus at good to excellent prices; a few at acceptable prices to,hold the current price. I generally stock for "a year" of estimated usage rates for a week or for a month. I do consider best use by type dates and the amount of storage space. We will eat a number of foods past thier best buy date but it does depend upon the product and date; we're not going to stock too, too much of many items that are all past thier date. I choose a year because if ive mis-estimated it will last at least 6 months and usually not more than 18 to 24 months. Because of the way we are stocking, we do not replentish until we are through or pretty much through what we own. Then we make the decision on what we will replentish, not replentish, and at how many units. There are some items i will stock up beyond a yser's worth because they are such a great price and I know we will go through them. These don't come all that often but for example we bought an ample 2 years worth of 24.? oz cans of coffee just today at $3.99/ can. We know the brand and know we do like the taste of the coffee. We are finishing on some approaching best buy butter we bought well over a year ago purchased in a lot of quantity at $2 and $1 per pound. Next month, I plan on buying quantity of 2/$1, 15oz canned mango slices depending upon how Christmas spending and all the rest goes; and if there are some left. BTW - We taste test 1, ONE, before buying in quantity. Hopefully there is still some left when we return but it is better to not "have to" eat through something you don't like from the larder.

Ramsey Solutions has some suggestions of what a budget should be (I still think what they have listed is very high, thrifty plan for 2 shows almost 600!). I think a family of 2 could spend 250--300 month depending on where you live. I spend about 500-550/month for a family of 5 with 2 teenaged boys in Ontario, Canada. I've learned to cook more from scratch (breads/sauces), freeze vegetables before they spoil for future use, & buy non-perishable items on sale!
There are so many factors that go into that, including your location and your health conditions, and your age, and potential food sensitivities, and your likes and dislikes, that no one can give you a perfect number
I was able to get my grocery food bill down to about $100/week for the two of us (me and my husband). I was spending well over that until I start getting more serious and careful with shopping for sales and planning dinners based on what I bought on sale versus planning dinners and having to then buy the ingredients (which often times were on on sale).
The only problem with shoes is sneakers these days. Most of the time they are all very cheaply made & cost a fortune for anything brand name. I've only bought 1 pair of new sneakers within the last 10+ years, but have only been wearing used sneakers from friends. I can only wear sneakers because I have severe bone spurs in my heel of my left foot, plus an immobilizer foot brace, so I can't even buy anything. It's too expensive to keep buying shoes that aren't comfortable or don't fit properly or fall apart.
I bought mine new in a sealed box from the thrift store for $6.99. It lasted for years. I want a replacement but can’t bring myself to pay even the sale price. I’m using a filter in a drip cone instead. It works.
I've just cleaned up all my summer shoes and put them away for the winter, same with my clothes. They last so much longer if you just take a bit of care.
Friend looked at his driving, three miles a day, sold car, will take lyft & pay options, no insurance, no car payments, no gas, no repairs, no worries, told him if he needed me & could give him a ride.

I've been taking the bus 20miles each way to work to save money. A little rough but my savings account is growing much faster
Live in Chicago, was grateful my car was stolen. As a babyboomer can ride free with a pass and it's an easier way to relate to others.
I remember I bought 3 or 4 can openers at dollar tree because they kept breaking. Then I finally bought a decent one and I've been using it for at least 10 years.
I am still using my great grandmother’s manual can opener!!!! 💕😀
I am still using my great grandmother’s manual can opener! It works great.
That's right. Some things have to be quality based, if not you're shooting yourself in the foot. ❤
I’ve been using mine for 30 years and it works perfectly.
I loved this video very much then.
