You seem to be referring to what was called the zero lift kit. It consisted of a small plastic strip that ran under the lip and a Gurney flap. Both items were available on every IX as a dealer installed option. The MR is the most common IX and the second heaviest. In the Evolution community, it is not most highly desirable. It differs from other IXs by the virtue of its killer Bilstein suspension, that most owners removed in lieu of shitty Asian coilovers, and the 6-speed. Every doo-dad from the MR was option on other IXs. For example, I opted for the factory gauges and the brake cooling guides on my SE.
You have been grinding it out and your content keeps getting better. You have already made it to 12k subs. You are gonna get bigger and bigger but the only thing right now that I would suggest is that all your content is about enthusiast Japanese cars. I love them and own one myself but if you want a bigger audience I would suggest branding out to enthusiast cars from other countries as well.
They said they might but i doubt it. It be pointless since the type r has always been FWD, AWD makes the car heavier and the president said that would go against its heritage.
I'm getting an Evo 8 in a few months after a while of wanting an STI,I just fell out of love with the car. And EVO's just look and feel so much better.
Perhaps the best Evo video on UA-cam. I'm the original owner of a IX SE. Only the MR came with the votrex generator; one of the reasons I didn't buy it. Someone installed it on the car in the vid after it was sold. FWIW, my SE with a full tank weighs 3249. Kinda wish you found a car with a stock suspension setup; the one you drove has compromised geometry. As for buying a used Evo, I'd never suggest that to anyone unless they were willing to play what it takes for a low mileage 100% stock example. Meaning, never modified. Good luck with that. These cars have had multiple owners each of whom modded, re-modded, and modded again. And it's not like we're talking about educated people, aggregately speaking. The Porsche rule applies to Evolutions, too - buy the best car you can from the beginning. It'll cost you less in every way. This being said, my Evo is the single most reliable car I've owned in +35 years behind the wheel. The beat-to-shit used one you buy won't be like it. That's the reality of it. Edit: Just re-read my comment and realized that it sounded kinda negative. Honestly, as one who'd been in the Evolution community for more than a decade, some of this is disheartening. OTOH, say you buy a stock IX SE. It's one of the most responsive and wired-in machines ever invented by mankind. Whatever you do, don't start modding it right away. We have almost 15 years of performance data that your friends don't know about. Don't mindlessly lower the car unless you want to earn a few extra bucks in the winter plowing snow. Better, come to the evolution owners group on FB and we'll help you. Good luck.
GT Content, if you're ever in NYS and would like to drive an optimized SE with 54K on its clock that has never been a daily driver and that's very close to stock, please feel free to get in touch. First time I've made this offer :)
Fantastic video with great information and attention to details. Amazing how you include screenshots of the weight and even go as far as to mention the gas tank level. Keep up the good work man! Great channel with amazing content!
I love your comment about wanting to go in 6th. Crazy thing is, in my 2010 civic si at 65 mph, im past 3000 rpm in 6th gear. The gears are insanely short.
My IX always puts a smile on my face! Gotta love the feeling of leaving or Atleast staying soft by side with a lot of v8’s and exotics for a fraction of the mod costs etc
Very cool review!! I always liked the EVO, but never really knew much about them. I am a Subaru guy, but I have a lot of respect for Mitsubishi EVO's. Great car and a lot of fun!
Spot on. If you buy an evo, have the funds ready for a transmission and transfer case rebuild. In the UK there is only one man I would trust with this task, Transmission Dynamics guru Clive Walpole (clivew).
I have an Mr with the se package. The best Evo IMHO. And the six speed has a bad rap. I still have my original transmission (160k),the car has been turned for most of its life, and hammered on. The real issue with the six speed was inconsistent manufacturing quality. In some cases gear tooth contact was less than perfect and even not touching some of the teeth together resulting in inconsistent loading. My car was produced 8/06 and by the end of the production, revised parts were used. Plus the Mr has many unique features such as the bov that holds 30psi. I run 28.5. Thanks for the vid. It's always good to see am evo.
Nice!! Rarely see clean versions of these anymore. Sort of related: I learned the hard way with the wrx stock five speed = bummer deal when 3rd gear self destructs, BUT! it did take 6 years of me beating the hell out of it and 3 turbo's later (stock, evo3/16g, blouch20g), one missed rev match downshift into 3rd spelled the end a few days later...
there is an evo 8 in my neighborhood that is always parked in the same spot. once a week a 1,000 year old asian lady moves it out of the way of the street sweeper and then puts it right back. i'm thinking about making her an offer on it.
Awesome video man, just one point I'd like to hit on. The 03 and possibly the 04 evo's do not have the factory 2 step activated from the factory. For some reason it is set pass the factory rev limit on them, but a tuner can easily lower it down to a usable and more appropriate level. But unless you buy a rare unmolested evo. you probably wont have to deal with that issue. Keep up the good work.
acd was available way before 2005. maybe not for you Americans but my EVO 8 FQ-300 which was made in 2003 came with ACD and AYC (being an import for the UK market)
I love these generation of Mitsubishi. I grew up on them in Jamaica. But I'm surprised this one did not break while doing a test drive. It's like these transmission and transfer case are made out of glass
The Recaros that came in the EVO 8, and 9 were great. I always wish I could have snagged a set, but never found an EVO at a junkyard that wasnt stripped to the frame bare. Laugh if you want, but I wanted to put some in my old 300CE, and get one that I could have modified into a gamer chair.
EVO-IX is the last true EVO. Such a great car. Correction on the video though. You call the little strakes on the back window "Anti-Vortex Generators". They absolutely ARE Vortex Generators. The vortices generated off of the tab energize the air, which causes it to "stick" to the rear window. An area that was usually a place of stagnant air. This energized air coming down the rear window, by way of the vortex generators, forces more air down and under the rear wing, the underside of course being the "working" side of the airfoil where the primary amount of the downforce is generated. The vortex generators also helped to improve the energy and speed of the air over the top side of the wings surface, feeding it more air volume, and also helping to improve the effect of the downforce generated. Of course the Vortex generators actually produce a little lift themselves...but that is a whole other aerodynamic conundrum for another time. Here is a video i suggest you watch on the subject that I hope you find informative and educational on the subject. ua-cam.com/video/9Whd_KnsLKE/v-deo.html And for what its worth. Removing the rear wing on an EVO doesnt really effect top speed at all, unless you are looking to do massive speed runs at 150MPH+. There was a video of a guy running the standing half mile in i believe an EVO-IV, at over 170MPH, he removed the wing to reduce the drag for more speed, he only gained 2-3MPH, and then proceeded to spin out and nearly roll the car at over 150MPH while slowing down, because of the removal of the downforce the wing produced. So, one could argue the trade off isnt exactly worth it.
The rear wing is great for the circuit but when you get into ridiculous speeds it does cause way more drag the faster you go which would make it harder to accelerate. I tried to do 300km/h in mines but it was harder to accelerate past 270 because of drag. Which is why drag racers remove the wing
Spoonzaza this car is mostly stock on power, so those kinda of speeds aren't even in the realm of reality, and at those speeds, the rear wing makes no difference. If you are actually getting up close to the 150-200MPH mark, you probably have enough money and time to fabricate a deck extension off the back for managing lift and stability anyway. Or, at least you should. If you are running those speeds without aero tweaks, and proper safety gear, you're just asking to die.
Mitsubishi's achilles heels are their transmissions. Tons of power but transmissions tend to be too weak to handle it without modifications...which equals more money :-(. But Mitsubishi is an addictive habit.
The 1/8th mile is not 5.6 seconds, likely you have mistaken 1/8th mile for 330 feet distance. 5.6 second 1/8th mile from a stop puts the car on pace to be a low 9 second 1/4 mile car. With a 1.9 60' and 13+ second quarter at 99. The 1/8th mile likely rings in around 8 seconds
I would just like to hint that there would be much love if the metric system could be included so one doesnt need to bring up a calculater everytime =) Your 4 countries vs the rest of the world, so i hope its not to much to ask for. Good work as usual otherwise. Edit, you like details so just thought i mention it.
Peder Tjärnberg Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep it in mind. Sometimes it's not possible because it'll cover the whole screen and distract from the video. Will try in the future 🤞
I always wonder how big of a difference is the evo 9 with AYC? Also i personally believe our USDM evo 8 is the best version. Why? Cause its the rawest if that make any sense. No ACD and AYC. There is no help from any electronics so everything falls on you as the driver which makes driving more fun
You forgot another trim for one of the versions and no the "SE" is just an appearance package on existing versions, not a version by itself like you're making it sound on your video .. They go as follow .. 1. RS, which is about 80 lbs lighter than the rest because no technology with it meaning no power anything, meaning good old fashion roll up windows as such and no sound deadening either .. 2. GSR (GSR SSL was a bit of luxury package available to the GSR version) GSR SSL which has the sun, sound, leather came with leather seats, HID lighting along with sunroof, aluminum wheels, 5 speed manual transmission and came in variety of colors, it's suspension stayed the same from that of the RS version I believe .. 3. MR and MR SE (yes there is an MR SE) which has similar options as the MR 6 spd, the difference is its tranny from 6spd to 5 spd, lsd dif, different suspension than the GSR, similar but different to both the GSR and MR, the answer to fixing the MR's transmission and GSR open t-case problem like you said on your video .. (Note:) No RS, SE trim or MR came with sunroof, only the GSR with SSL came with it .. For daily stock power the 6 speed transmission is fine, now if you're racing it daily and have crazy hp causing it to overheat, well then the 5 speed is the answer as it's stronger and it cools itself better and you also aviod having to shift as much, the weakest part of the EVO is the t-case specially on the GSR's which came with an open dif which makes it weak as hell, even at stock power they break, either way good job, just thought I'd throw some pointers your way .. (NOTE:) My comment only applies to the 2006 Mitsu Lancer Evo IX
There was no such thing as a MR SE. We invented the moniker on EvoM as an abbreviation for the MR with an Appearance Package - a $500 option at the time. Ask me how I know. The SE did not have "the sound," not sure what that actually means unless you're referring to the system in the SSL and it didn't have that either, the diamond black wheels were exclusive to the last imported batch of Evolutions - the SE and the Appearance Package - the SE did not come with a Vortex Generator, and was only available in silver, grey, and black. There was no white SE in the USDM. For the record, the 6-speed's 4th gear overheating Internet "issue" is well documented. It occurs during prolonged runs on a road course, where one sits in 4th for an extended period. That's it. Not gonna go road racing? No reason for concern. The VIII had issues with its TC after on owner would replace the clutch with a bear trap and launch the thing with no clue as to how. The IX has a significantly stronger TC and it's not open as asserted. HTH FWIW, the IX RS was about 50lbs lighter: No power windows/locks, no radio, no ABS, additional structural reinforcement in the trunk, no trunk trim, and a lighter trunk lid. I owned a IX RS and later in '06 got the SE. The RS felt even more raw than the SE, a wonderful car to drive, but alas my aging eyes didn't do well with the RS' headlights.
Use to love Evos VIII and IX but the X looked ugly, then they stopped making them. I Would be seriously interested if Mitsubishi ever brought the Evo back.
I want a Evo 8 or 9 now they looks so mean and aggressive man just wow and Subaru in this era was not really a mean looking car and there as common now a days as a 350/370
A spoilerless Evo just doesn't look right to me. I don't care how much it improves my straight line speed to take it off.
krocialblack Yeah, I've got mixed feelings myself...kind of like the MK4 Supra situation.
I agree, it takes some of the jdm out of the car
The wing is a cop magnet... They all know it when they see it. More incognito this way...
JDoc Built If you want incognito, the Evo isn't the car for you.
100% agree man hill clime is better anyways
MR = Gorgeous!

i like the SE better myself
0-60 in 5 sec. Goddammit that's fuckin good for a stock sedan!
Evos stand up to their reputation, I'll give them that

jdm love all dayy err day
STI's are becoming so common that I'd rather have one of these to stand out
Koosha Sepehri I heard rumors that the 2018 civic type R is going to be AWD
it is bro
that was one of my thoughts. before I bought my evo 9
They said they might but i doubt it. It be pointless since the type r has always been FWD, AWD makes the car heavier and the president said that would go against its heritage.

Keep up the good work man!
Great channel with amazing content!
Numbers123 Thanks!
Always make good vids, keep them coming, you should do another car history video too
Steady Saabin Thanks. I should have another history video out this weekend or next. Work>UA-cam :/

Great job on the review. I was intrigued through the whole thing!

This is the road going to pine flat lake in Fresno California. Awesome video and review.
😀
,EVO 8 & 9 JUST LOVE IT
evo 9 has always been on my secret wish list.
zachary paris Better hurry now before this video goes viral 😂
there is an evo 8 in my neighborhood that is always parked in the same spot. once a week a 1,000 year old asian lady moves it out of the way of the street sweeper and then puts it right back. i'm thinking about making her an offer on it.
A thousand year old 😹😹

Vezqui Morales Thanks for the support!
Fade LK Thanks for the support!
GT Content no problem keep doing what you're dping
Mitsu needs to bring the EVO back... its time!
Definitely agree!
The'03-'04 have weak t-cases. The 2005 & 2006 have better t-cases. The transmissions aren't weak. People just beat them to no end.
Fantasma 115 #TRUTH
I got a 03 evo 8 with 187,000 miles. Still on original T-cases. I don’t launch the car
Good to know.
POWER SHIFT!!!!
so true!!!!
Great video 👌🏼
Jay Bosslingo 😁
If that was you launching I feel sad for the transfer case. You don’t dump the clutch, you slip it. You’ll get a better 60 and the tcase will be fine.
I love these generation of Mitsubishi. I grew up on them in Jamaica. But I'm surprised this one did not break while doing a test drive. It's like these transmission and transfer case are made out of glass
I believe the earlier EVO VIII had weaker cases while the IX cases were revised.
Yeah I have this car!
Sean Hatch I wish I had this car!
LAN Evo hopefully in the future I'll be whooping stangs with my evo
EVO-IX is the last true EVO.
Such a great car.
Correction on the video though.
You call the little strakes on the back window "Anti-Vortex Generators". They absolutely ARE Vortex Generators.
The vortices generated off of the tab energize the air, which causes it to "stick" to the rear window. An area that was usually a place of stagnant air. This energized air coming down the rear window, by way of the vortex generators, forces more air down and under the rear wing, the underside of course being the "working" side of the airfoil where the primary amount of the downforce is generated. Of course the Vortex generators actually produce a little lift themselves...but that is a whole other aerodynamic conundrum for another time.
Here is a video i suggest you watch on the subject that I hope you find informative and educational on the subject.

I'm from the uk and I own an evelution mr fq340 where mitsubishis tuning company ralliart mods the evos out shame their not around in the us
cvfb beats Yeah, I think it would have cost too much I'm our case. I believe the MR was already in the $40k neighborhood and that is V8 territory.
Evo 8 was probably the best looking gen. I would i imagine it’s extremely hard to find a used one that is stock or close to it.
Didn't know my brothers old car was this special
jimmy truong 😂
Mitsubishi's achilles heels are their transmissions. Tons of power but transmissions tend to be too weak to handle it without modifications...which equals more money :-(. But Mitsubishi is an addictive habit.

Heh, try owning a wrx.... the stock 5 speed is even worse!
Very nice presentation. Thanks
eddie perez You're welcome.
Sooooo sexy. I like this gen evo, my ultimate one I want is the wagon evolution. Which I know wasn't sold here. Had no idea there was an SE
Good review but this car does not run a 5.6 in 1/8th mile, you meant to say 330'. A 5.6 1/8th translates into a 8.7 quarter mile, give or take.
TheBudgetTuner Yups. Noted below as well from other commenters.
TheBudgetTuner yeah I was like try again More like a 8.5 or 9 sec 1/8 mile ..
Awesome!
Shubham SDR 😁
Dope. Very informative.
Thanks
I like the cast iron block and the 5spd
What a beast
keep up the vids!
Michael V L Will do!
4g63, I missed the good times we had in the 2nd gen eclispe. 😢
Thank you very much for this clear and good information. I will have to safe some more money but i will definatly buy a Evo 6 or 8
I have an 05 yellow Evo 8 with a lot of MR parts.....I am never gonna sell this car!!
Doh! You're correct.
thanks man this video was very helpful....

Why the SE version didn’t have the AYC and what changes in driving it? Is it maybe less safe? Thanks
Ever think about reviewing a s2000?
Koosha Sepehri I just need to get a hold of one 😁
I always wonder how big of a difference is the evo 9 with AYC? Also i personally believe our USDM evo 8 is the best version. Why? Cause its the rawest if that make any sense. No ACD and AYC. There is no help from any electronics so everything falls on you as the driver which makes driving more fun
the HOOD. *voice in my head* Bonnet. lmao man ive been watching too much top gear. xD
+fed Z 😂
Does anyone know if there is a certain way to bleed the calipers on these cars? They all have two bleeders. Does it matter which one is bleed first?
you're smooth with it bro
Thanks bro
my dream car🙏
+Mustang -Ricky Nice!
Great Video!
Thanks!
thumbsUP!
What about for the evo 8? Which version was better for the 03-05. I currently have the 05 MR and love it.
This is my dream car😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
+Xenoverse 677 Nice!
Am I the only one who thinks it looks actually nice without the wing
Think u got the times a little messed up there, this thing isnt doing the 1/8th in 5.6, if that were the case it would be a mid 8 second qtr car
andre sawyers Noted below by other commenters. Should have been 330.
Great!
Miguel A Rios Izaguirre Thanks!

#TRUTH
HTH
FWIW, the IX RS was about 50lbs lighter: No power windows/locks, no radio, no ABS, additional structural reinforcement in the trunk, no trunk trim, and a lighter trunk lid.

Those stickers on the door will probably cost more than the car.
Good video but your 1/8th mile time was way off ;-) just saying .... Probably runs a low 8 to high 7 in the 1/8th

Why would you not have the big wing :(
Like he said the guy drag races/half miles it and the wing creates drag and lowers top speed
That usdm bumper is hideous though..
can you do 2016 lancer sel
+Bryan Saenz I wouldn't mind if I could find one 😁
