    I'm on your email list but have not opened email from you until recently. Glad you are able to paint and teach full time now and have recovered. Hope you will be painting and teaching for many years to come. You are somewhat unique, Muensell with a full palette not a limited one! I feel Muensell theory and a limited palette is something of an oxymoron. Your way is the correct way

    very useful advice thank you,
    i used to assume BLACK was the hugh/colour for shadows (with some transparency of course) but now, ive seen the light colour which includes reflective light from neighbouring objects more like green etc

    • @PaulFoxton
      @PaulFoxton  Рік тому

      Yes. Usually, a shadow colour will be mostly influenced by the local colour. So if an object is a bright orange, the shadow colour will be a lower value orange.
      That will get you 90% of the way there in most cases. Then, take into account reflected light coming into the shadow, and the colour of the object that is reflecting that light. The shadow colour and the colour of the reflected light mix a little.
      With our orange example, if the reflected light was being reflected from a blue object, the intensity of the orange in the shadow (the chroma of the shadow colour) would diminish, being cancelled out a little by the blue in the reflected light.
      Bear in mind also that the MOST important aspect is VALUE. Get that right, and you have a lot of leeway with hue and chroma.

    Hi Paul, just finished watching the How to Paint Shadows stream, my question has to do with using the Burnt Umber for the edge shadows on all 3 of the objects. Why not use Raw Umber which you have stated is a "Yellow Orange" on the Lemon, Burnt Umber " low value middle orange" on the Orange and Pear? Is it because you mixed Burnt umber in your light lemon values? Can you restate when you would use Burnt Umber, Raw Umber and Burnt Siena to lower the values of different local colors on different objects. Thank you , Joel

    Dear Paul, Will I be able to use your method using only natural daylight by a west-facing window? If so, how far away from the window should I be? I am struggling using the color checker as each little change in angle makes a huge difference in value. Thanks- Jim

    cadmium orange speckles added in places plus cadmium yellow orange halo around that neutral highlite in speckles to bring up the chroma? not sure about the chroma of the orange from michael harding.There are newer chromatic reds than the cadmiums my teacher even years ago used to use to get the highest chroma of reds.

    Perhaps a dumb question , but since you are trying for real colour , how do you adapt to LED lighting , that has low CRI rating?

    • @PaulFoxton
      @PaulFoxton  Рік тому

      I only use high CRI lights, I'd never recommend working under a low CRI light. It will make colour matching very difficult!

    What did you use to neutralize the colours? You said. Not black but a my sell neutral? How do you make the neutral?

    • @PaulFoxton
      @PaulFoxton  6 років тому +1

      I use Munsell neutrals. It's a true neutral mixed from titanium white, ivory black and raw or burnt umber - or a bit of both, depending on your paint brand. You get them by matching Munsell neutral colour chips accurately, which you need to buy.
      I have a video on how to mix neutrals using a highly accurate method called bracketing here:
