When a sprinkler head pops under high temperature, pressure above the valve plate starts to drop, which causes the valve plate to open up, allowing water to flow through a previously covered slot port which is plumbed to a bottle called "retard chamber". The bottle would be filled up in about 30 seconds, and then water coming out from its top flows into a water motor gong (mechanical bell driven by a turbine) for local alarm and a pressure switch for remote alarm and sprinkler pump activation.
