I love how their starters have a unique sound to them. I know strait away if it’s a Perkins or not just by the starter sound. It’s like the Nissan td model engines have the recognisable starter sound. You just can’t beat old or vintage machines.
I have a a6t-354 in a Massey combine that has given excellent service or the years, it ran good and ran cheaply giving great fuel economy, also have a 4-248 in a backhoe with the same results. I was however devastated to learn that back in the late 98's Cat have bought them out.
Makes me kind of proud my 20 year old Perkins always starts on the first revolution down to zero degrees without using glowplugs and pulls like a freight train.
Went with a mate to view a mk1 Ford granada a good few years back. It had one of these engines "retro fitted". The engine mounts were dexion shelving angle half bolted, half "stick welded" extremely badly. There was no inlet manifold on the engine and after an almost battery draining non start the seller shoved some ripped up kitchen towel down each inlet port, squirted zippo lighter fuel on them all and lit it, shouting "crank it over!" to my mate. If only he had left the 3 litre V6 petrol engine in there it would have been a lovely car, sadly it was too ruined to be worth buying.
Hi nice video i had a 38ft wooden fishing boat with a 4236, when i first got the boat she loved sniff (easy start) anyway did a 8 month refit, when coming to start engine again she would,nt so lit some paper sniff that veroom really good engine never any trouble start first time.
I go out on a big boat nelson 40 ..it got a 6 354 na borgwarner gearbox bowman heat exchanger on it 3500 + hours summer and winter... two swing off the starter and its fired UP..no joking some engine to start..did the hole top end last summer new every thing valves.. guides.. seatings.. skip... new water pump... alternator... starter.. heater plug... and lift pump...recon.. injectors...and injector pump gaskets & O rings...the only reason i did the lot was ... it has 3500hrs ...and it was gaining OIL ... injector leeking over night... and the empeller started breaking UP one day bussers went off hot but not boiling..the engine was blue back in the day ... now silver...helo from Ireland...😉 .
The only one worth watching and running right is at the last 3 seconds. I will take video of a proper 6 354 in a boat soon. We know what they Should sound like.
Another Great British company gone to Johnny forgiener. What I can't understand is why don't our car manufacturers get together with Perkins & JCB to design Engines . 🇬🇧👍

I'm not a huge Perkins fan but I will admit the old school 6-354 was a very economical engine for rigid body work if about 12t

Do you have twin disc 8501 series gearbox and Allison 4700,4800 gearbox for sale? Both old and broken ones are fine!
