Back when this was new I wouldn't have given it a second look. I was more into the likes of the Technics SLM1 direct drive. Today these look pretty dam good compared to most of the modern stuff. Very simple, and basically a work horse.
The Amstrad TP12D I had back in the late 70s had a similar speed changing arrangement. It wasn't a bad deck really, but no shock absorbing suspension or sprung feet meant it picked up pretty much every external sound.
I have some tapes, CD's and records by local groups. Around 30 years ago, it seemed like local people in my area couldn't wait to record an album. The copyright police tend not to catch on. I've even received comments from relatives and so forth thanking me for playing the music.
The copyright police at youtube watch constantly. They won't take down a video, but they will re-direct advertising to the rights holder. Even if you don't have a monetized channel they will run ads against it, and send the money to the rights holder. Since I monetize my channel, and do not partake in copyright violations, I want my revenue for producing videos. Not a portion of it which is what happens when a match is made. So I make every effort to ensure I do not exceed the time permitted for fair use. If by chance I exceed it, I will pull the video, make the required changes to get it past the fair use guidelines and re-upload it. I understand that a few people get very upset, one clown resorts to phoning my business public phone number over and over. I winder if he enjoyed my daughter screaming expletives at him. This clown phoned my business number about 40 times over the course of about 30 minutes untill I shut down the phone. I think you probably know who I am referring to as well. Fortunately he only has my public phone number so when he acts up I just pull the plug on the phone. I generally publish videos as private for about an hour to make sure that there are no matches, and then publish. Just youtube was slow today. I had it unlisted for what I figured was long enough, and then published, and within about 10 minutes I got the notice and pulled it to make the changes. UA-cam is pretty good, because they tell me the time code where the match was made, so it is easy to cut a second or 2 out and then I know I will be golden.
I assume the speed check disc is country specific and in Scotland I would need a 50 Hz disc or are there numerous frequencies covered as I notice there are a number of test rows?
They were a top rated best buy turntable by Consumer reports. I think under $100 and made in USA. Typical person would be one that had a budget but wanted good sound, maybe a kit amplifier and AR speakers.
I like the "Dave cad" drawing, pioneered by EEvblog lol. I know how the strobe disks work and i've made them, but they still seem like magic lol. I love optical methods of testing. Now that deck is basic, not even a speed change lever to jump the belt, but that platter will have no speed warble, a big flywheel with momentum, just like a steam engine.
If someone needs to replace the stylus guard on their turntable,You can use a piece of Magic erasure sponge and double sided tape and it works great for cleaning the stylus also...
You mention in the video lubrication. Is there a video on that? We just pulled out my husband's old AR-25. The foam is toast, and it seems like lubrication is in order.
Hurst is still making motors as replacements for the AR xA , xB and a few other models by Acoustic research..They are 300 rpm motors AC synchronous motors..
There is an android application called RPM calculator. you are running after installing it in your phone. you turn the phone on and put it on the phone and the app shows you by measuring the speed of rotation. I'm doing this problem-free calibration. I follow your videos with excitement. thanks.

First make sure you are plugged into a phono input. I know this sounds stupid but the number of people that plug a magnetic cartridge turntable into a line in on their amp and wonder why there is no or very little sound would boggle your mind. There are only a couple of things that can cause this. Broken wires or a bad cartridge.
@@12voltvids Ha! Not stupid at all, but unfortunately I did a stupid thing and broke the needle while fiddling around. So now a new cartridge correct? Not sure how to go about replacing it myself though...
@@gentlemanbrawlers Well that will do it. You may be able to just get a replacement needle if it was a common one. Moat just pull out and should have a number on it you can use to order.

If you edit something out the timer restarts. I play by the rules as I make a fair bit of moolah from UA-cam. I could play entire tracks and share revenue with the rights holder but they take more than half of the percentage that creators make, and I choose not to share my revenue which means the 8 second rule applies. I am 100% for creators making money, and that is why I dont bootleg stuff. Many years ago i put a few videos up of a few performances I did not hold rights to and did not monetize those but the rights holder did so if anyone watched those ads play but 100% of the revenue goes to the artist. Same with the video I did comparing a vinyl record with an audiophile vinyl and CD. Where I cut back and forth and let an entire track play. Warner music gets all the revenue from that video not me.
It's a good table, but just TOO manual for my taste. I had a Thorens TD160c that followed the same basic design, but it was able to change speeds with the flick of a switch, and it had a cueing lever.
Wow this turntable has a removable outer platter, and performed well after you took care of it. I'd like to see a Chinese-made Crosley match this!

Just got mine going again. Sounds incredible with a Shure V15 III cartridge.

alot of reel to reel tape decks have a motor-run capacitor, i've had to replace several of them
All induction motors use them. Only squirrel cage or shaded pole don't.
I had one just like it.

I had one of those but it was 33 rpm only and it had a small start motor to start in the right direction.

XB has a cueing device and a plinth that is not real wooden veneer.

Very simple but does what it's supposed to, play records!
Speed is well off, not typical of this model, which usually tested to 0.04% error. I'm sure you know that 7 lines/min, =0.1% error.
syncronus motor. No speed adjustment. Doesn't matter that guy that owned it found some sucker to pay him hundreds for it.
DJs don't use belt-driven turntables. Their livelihoods depend upon reliability.
They use direct drive or idler drive.
No, their lively hoods depends on how quickly the platter gets up to speed. Audiophiles like myself don’t need direct drive turntables.
I disagree: phonographs are simpler still!
