  • How to replace a broken cracked glass digitiser on your 8th generation kindle fire tablet.
    Couldn't find any videos for this so thought I'd make one, I've previously worked 100s of other devices including many kindle fires but this is the firsts 8th gen model.
    Sorry, camera stopped before end so please also see part 2.

    Thanks for the excellent video. One thing I did to minimize shards of glass flying was to put clear tape over the old screen before trying to remove it.

    Just wanted to say thank you for this video! The tutorial was spot on and I was able to successfully install the new digitizer on my sons tablet. I don't have a heat gun, so I used a hairdryer instead. Took my twice as long but still worked!

    Thanks for the great tutorial, I was able to successfully replace the screen on my daughters tablet. A couple points if anyone reads these. On the ribbon connector for the digitizer the lock is on the opposite side of the ribbon unlike the cable for the LCD which it took me a minute to figure out. Lastly, I had a black screen and nothing happened when trying to turn it on after the repair. I had to do a hard reset by holding the power down for 30 seconds, which fixed it and now everything is working great.

    Nice guide. I recommend grabbing a kit that contains plastic spudger and thin plastic picks made for separating the digitizer from the case.

    • @jpstechrepairs
      @jpstechrepairs  2 роки тому

      Thanks for your comment, I've used plastic picks etc in the past and many other options over the years, but have not found anything as effective as the isesamo tool for getting between surfaces.
      Everyone will have their own preferred methods I'm sure.

    There I was wondering why you separated the digitiser before unscrewing the PCB, then I realised how difficult it can be to separate the digitiser with the PCB flapping around. Slight annoying they didn't put connectors on the speaker wires!
    Thanks for the video.

    • @jpstechrepairs
      @jpstechrepairs  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, definitely annoying when they lack consistency but having some parts on plugs and connectors and others being soldered in place.
      Not worth the trouble of desoldering and resoldering in this situation

      @@jpstechrepairs I found that a razor blade was most effective at doing the initial lift around the edge. I also have some other plastic razor blades (designed for a scraper) which are great for more safely working my way around the edge than with the spudgers.

    protip. place clear tape all over the broken screen... avoids glass all over the place.... also you do not need to leverage the screen shattering the glass.. just keep working the tool to remove the glue

      Thanks for your comment, I do tape some screens, ipad & mini especially are prone to splintering so I usually tape those when replacing screen.

    Pro tip, tape the broken glass before removal. Glass stays together, if it breaks, it doesn't fly everywhere.

      Hi Stefano,
      Glad you found the video helpful.
      Could be a few things, I would watch the video back again to be sure you have followed all steps, ensure all connections are fully inserted and that nothing has been inadvertently damaged. I could be something simple. It is also possible that you may have been supplied a faulty digitizer.

    Hi JP,
    Awesome tutorial, thank you. I purchased a new digitizer and successfully installed it. I'm having one issue that I can't seem to get past.
    I noticed that the white line on the digitizer ribbon doesn't line up with the edge of the connecting port. When I turned the unit on, it turns on,
    but for some reason i can't see the screen. If place a light on the screen and look at it at an angle from top to bottom, i'm able to see that the LCD
    screen is functioning properly. I see the tablet get all the way to the home page. I had 2 instances where I was able to see the screen perfectly but
    then again the same thing would happen. I'm starting to believe that I may have received a faulty digitizer but the fact that it worked a couple of times
    has me in doubt. Can you give me any insight as to what may be going on and how to move forward from there?
    Thank you

    • @jpstechrepairs
      @jpstechrepairs  2 роки тому

      Hello, thanks for getting in touch.
      If you are able to see the displayed image when shining a torch on it that would suggest that the back light in your LCD has failed.
      It is unlikely that this is related to the digitizer ribbon connector.
      I would first ensure that the cable to the display is connected correctly, failing that it sounds like you may need to source a replacement display.
      If the display was working properly before you replaced the digitizer, then have a good look at all other components and connectors as it is possible you may have damaged something during replacement.

    I appreciate the work involved but wouldn't it of been easier to just put more heat on the edges as you went from each side? I've done iphones and heat dissapated quickly.

    • @jpstechrepairs
      @jpstechrepairs  2 роки тому

      Heat does dissipate very quickly on iPhones and iPads in particular due to the aluminium frame. Not quite such an issue on this. The main reason for heating all the way around before working on one side is to soften the adhesive on the opposite side to allow the glass to move as one. If heated just at the edge being worked on then the glass is much more likely to break up.

    Hi, thanks for the video. I have a kindle fire 8 10th gen. Do you think the same process will work on mine? Thank you. There's not much information on this.

    • @jpstechrepairs
      @jpstechrepairs  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Louise,
      I've not had an opportunity to work on the 10th gen yet, so can't be certain. But ass a general rule manufacturers don't usually make major changes to the way they're tablets ar built. You may find connections in slightly different places on newer models but the principle of disassembly is likely to be more or less the same.
      If I do get a 10th gen in for repairs I will be sure to post a video.
      Thanks.

    Thanks for this video! I am stuck in a place where the mother board wont come up! I removed the screws and I don't see the clips on the location shown in this video 16:53 . It feels like as if the mother board is glued tightly on the left bottom side.. Any idea?

    • @jpstechrepairs
      @jpstechrepairs  2 роки тому +1

      Really sorry, I have only just seen your comment.
      Clips are very small and at the edge of the board, so it may be these holding it, it is unlikely to be glued unless there has been some sort of previous repair.
      Make sure there are no cables etc hiding it down that you may have missed.

    Hi, I don't know if you can answer my message. I open the screen and connected the two cables but when I turn on the kindle the screen is white. The connector can only match in one direction. I think it doesn't work anymore.

    • @jpstechrepairs
      @jpstechrepairs  3 роки тому

      Hi, sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I would suggest removing the cables again carefully and ensuring the contacts are clean the re fitting ensuring they are definitely fully inserted, if everything is as it should be and still does not work, then maybe you have a faulty lcd, or potentially damage elsewhere withing the unit.

    Help, I followed everything, and it all looks like it is connected correctly. It turns on, but the touch is not recognized. Any suggestions?

    • @jpstechrepairs
      @jpstechrepairs  2 роки тому

      Hi, I would double check that the digitizer ribbon connector is fully inserted, if not all the way in in correct position then touch control will not work.
      Check for any damage to the ribbon.
      If all is correct and still not working then it may be a faulty unit.

    I tuned in to your long video to see how to feed the ribbon cable through the frame slot. I saw you struggle through removing glue through 2/3 of the video. Then when you came to slipping the ribbon cable out you just broke the cable. No worries, You're sure to show it when installing the new one. No such luck. Your camera stopped recording at that point. Then when you picked up again in part 2 you had already completed this critical step; off camera. I still don't know how to do it. Thanks for wasting my time.

    Use a space heater to heat it up. You can just let it sit their for like 10 minutes and the glue will be totally melted.

      To be honest I've used everything over the years, from electric heat guns, to hairdiers, heat mats, to holding the device over a toaster.
      The best method is usually the one that's available at the time 😊

    • @jpstechrepairs

      I wouldn't recommend superglue as it should be an adhesive that remains flexible to allow for expansion and contraction with changes in temperature, to avoid the glass cracking or coming loose
