  • Baul is a spiritual path and it is a yogic parampara (tradition) from the old time.
The Baul path is about sound and Bauls are known as “The worshipper of sound”.
If the Baul takes the path of the sound, an ektara starts resonating inside their own body. Then eventually a Goddess enters their throat and sings and dances there. It becomes the theatre of nirvana. This is what it is to be a Baul.
Wherever there was Ektara, there is this presence of the philosophy of Oneness. Baul is talking about oneness with the divine and oneness in everything.
There is evidence that the Ektara existed even in the time of the Vedas (earliest mention in the Sama Veda). Throughout India, Yogis, mystics and saints have been carrying it, as it is a symbol of the Bhakti tradition, a symbol of generations who practiced that Oneness within them.
Parvathy Maa recalls what her Guru Sanatan Das Baul said about the Ektara:
"My master Sanatan Baba, when he gave me for the first time the ektara, he said that now you are Bina Das -- Bina Das means the servant of the veena, which is 'ekatantra veena', this is one-string veena. So you are a servant of that. So let your master take you wherever she takes you.
One string is enough for the whole life! I should always remember that I am just a carrier of this instrument which has existed for thousands of years, and which so many sadhus have carried. I am just one of them. My body will not remain, but this (the Ektara) will remain and somebody in my place will be holding it. This is the truth, this is the Baul tradition."
