- Looking at two masks that are great in concept but awful in reality.
The M17 style cheek filter masks that ended up being bulkier and heavier than the older canister filter masks and the Scott GSR which ended up being heavier and bulkier than the S10 which it replaced, on paper they had lots of advantages but in reality they are far worse.

My favourite Gas Mask are the Swiss SM90 and SM-3, because the are the most comfortable gas mask i know, and the SM-3 has 3 valves to put on your filters *.*, but it is expensive AF
Putting the damn cheek filter in for the first time took me like 10 minutes.
100 minutes... 100 minutes (it was my 3rd gas mask after a yugo m1 and a hungarian m70)
Now we have a nice addition to that poster of British small mammals. Live!
Cheek-filter mask-wearing hamster. ;)
i guess I'm kinda randomly asking but does anyone know a good website to watch newly released tv shows online?
@Juelz Baylor I would suggest Flixzone. You can find it on google :)
@Prince Moshe definitely, I've been using Flixzone for months myself :D
@Prince Moshe Thanks, signed up and it seems like a nice service =) Appreciate it !!
@Juelz Baylor no problem :D
These masks remind me of the G-11. On paper, it was great, on burst fire mode, it was supposed to fire faster than the recoil would hit you, so it'd be almost like a laserbeam at close to medium range. Plus it had caseless ammo. The trouble with this, is 1: With sustained fire, imagine how much the barrel would heat up. And I don't think that the barrel was able to be replaced on it. 2: I highly doubt that the feeding system would be very reliable with the rounds being put into the receiver so fast. 3: It had caseless ammo, no other NATO weapon was using caseless ammo, which would be troublesome for logistics.
Yeah a gun like the G11 would make a lot more sense for an individual nation to make rather than a NATO member, just like with bayonet filters.
Seeing this video pop up I knew it was going to include cheek-filters before I even watched it lol
Wasn't the idea for them to be disposable? I know the British did that with their boots at one point as in the soles were a cheap polymer that worked perfectly but only had a shelf life of 5 years. Quite a few people buying surplus got caught out with that as the soles started to crumble! But for the army it was a non problem, a financial trade off as they lasted as long as they needed to.
From everything I've read they were meant to be brilliant, but as lots of soldiers complained they had broken masks on delivery I think the issue was more spending such little money per mask that everything was bad.
Someone made alot of money and someone else got a promotion. That's probably why the change from s10 to the gsr.
Most likely
Your profile picture has the british brodie helmet, do you still have it how much did you pay for it and where did you buy it? Been looking for one of thoes for a while
A junk store not far from where I live for £5 or something.
Weaponsandstuff93 holy hell, thoes are like 80€ in ebay... I think i'll need to start saving up some money
Can you breathe in the Scott GSR with the filters off, with the bayonet system sorta closing off the intake with the filter off to make filter swaps safer?
Hi there, I like your videos, very informative. I have a question and apologies if you have covered this before... looking at masks on eBay they are sizes 1-3. I get that. But how do you measure your face to know what will fit you without trying one on? Hopefully it's not a stupid question. Regards Steve
I did a video on mask sizes but there is not a universal size, different countries/companies use different sizing, in some countries 1 is large, others 1 is small.
Hi, could you fit an fp5 filter on a Soviet PMG, as I’m considering buying one without the filter and I know the fp5 doesn’t contain asbestos, so would it fit?
Yes I did this in a video.
How good is the American m40
Alright, but the silicone rubber it's made of makes it vulnerable to certain chemical weapons.
This was a fun video. Thanks for making this. Honestly it's a bit odd that these things saw the light of day, but I guess this happens from time to time. I think gas masks show with ease the differences between how communist nations work and western nations work. The USSR got a few basic designs that work for there role and kept making them till the fall. Where as western nations tried to reinvent the wheel a lot and got a few great masks and a lot of bad ones.
I think a bigger point was if someone fucked up in the Soviet Union they were gulag-ed. Where as in lots of Western countries you can majorly fuck up and you get given a bonus.
Weaponsandstuff93, I'm in need of your expert opinion. I've been searching for a new GP-5 as my current one is getting too small for me, however, instead of just getting another GP-5, I've thought about expanding the collection with a different Warsaw Pact Respirator. Which GP-5 style mask would you recommend in terms of comfort and overall quality?
ShMS or GP-5M both have voice diaphragms.
Excellent. Cheers mate.
Also is the msa 813861 a good mask cause its a little pricy
Hey, so my s10 filter is leaking and buying a new one isnt a option, do you tink there is a sort of cloth which i con do in my filter thread part? (i cant find anything alike)
I wouldn't recommend it but you can use a P3 filter.
Whats the safest filters to use
Probaly any filter that is in-date.
Jerre k thanks
Brian Wyters yea
corys nose any NBC rated filter that's is within date is the beat of the best.
I have the Avon m50 but my filters are leaking
Get new filters then
I love your vids, such good content in all of them and still not boring at all
Cheers
Why do you hide the title of “British small mammals” poster
Why would he hide it?
They all went extinct
How much does a gas mask cost?
Depends totally on the mask. Anywhere between £10-500
Weaponsandstuff93 Thanks.
I really want to design a working cheek filter mask with them on the out side
Avon M50
Weaponsandstuff93 nah like i mean a m17 filter type or something
where do you buy this gas masks
eBay
I trained on the GSR. Hate it.
4:52 You look really odd
Just how many gas masks do you own?
80 something.
Weaponsandstuff93 What is the oldest gas mask that you own?
I would at the german WW2 masks too, a mix of cloth and rubber so its cheaper but with a lot of mistakes.
The GM30 is pretty awful.
Weaponsandstuff93 Yep but the concept of keeping the price low is a bit interesting, well but i dont have one so i cant really judge it.
My geandfather in the Bundeswehr used to have the copied version and recalled it as a good mask.
Yeah the copied version is the GM-54
Weaponsandstuff93 Yeah i said it was a good one but maybe its because its the only one he had
Good video mate! I have a military costume and a real helmet I got from a surplus store. It's a kid suit because I'm 9 but the helmet was in ww2 I think?
Well without seeing the helmet I have no idea.
It's in one of my videos
Big Cat I checked out the video, and it's a little difficult to see the helmet in full, but it looks to me like an East German M56. I see that you put in the description that it may be from East Germany, and if something's East German, it's post WW2, as East and West Germany didn't exist until after the Allied invasion of Germany. Either way it's a nice find.
New to the channel. How many masks do you have all together? I only have a couple of those Israeli civilian masks and a NOS US M9A1? (I think thats correct off the top of my head).
80 something.
Weaponsandstuff93 nice. Was just looking at my M9 and noticed it seems to be missing a valve on the oral/nasal cup. I assume there's supposed to be 2 there in a complete mask?
Would you like me to send you my spare Avon m50?
If your in the US you can't legally do that.
I live in the uk
The Avon M50 is a good mask, and changing filters is easy when on your face once you get used to the angle it attaches. It's nearly impossible to shoot with, taking one filter off restricts your breathing enough to pass out. I've seen grunts try clearing a town and breaching a house with one filter on, and a dude collapsed. You have to wear both, and even then for someone with anything less than good breathing health it's laboring. Can easily go from the hip bag to fully donned in 4 seconds. There's a definite feeling of security with the sealing disks, and panoramic view. Definitely would like to try the C50 or the FM53 for comparison. The added ability of connecting the Avon masks to a camelbak makes operations with them much nicer being able to drink on the move. As well the M61 filters are much easier to carry than a 40mm filter, but the sealed package they come in is very bulky. There isn't a very good way to carry them sealed, and tearing the package open with MOPP gloves would be second to impossible.
Interesting thanks, so the M50 by the sound of it has some of the flaws of the GSR but not as many because at least it's well built.
I would definitely say that Avon has good build quality, I've never seen one damaged in person by anything short of intentional destruction. On an individual user basis I would find the proprietary bayonet filters concerning for lack of availability and variation.
Aha! A gas mask even better than cheek filters...Ear filters!
There are some really weird masks with filters behind the mask, above the forehead etc.
your awsome love you comrade
Cheers
Cool video
Cheers
Cheek filters absolutely SUCK. Getting those filters in can damage the mask!!! I have an M17. I had 2 of them. One ripped from the side out while trying to install a filter. I was pissed because it was a new mask (unused). I’ve restored the other one with new parts, then very carefully, after a lot of cursing, managed to get filters back in it. I would use it in a pinch, but my M50 is far, FAR better.
M17 is an ugly looking mask for sure.
