Cambridge Entry Requirements

  • Cambridge Vlog 73 | There are lots of myths surrounding entry requirements for Cambridge. The admissions process is not as mysterious as you think. It's not so much a set of hurdles for you to overcome but rather a situation in which you present an admissions tutor with a complete picture of yourself. This is everything including your personal statement, your AS results, predicted grades, reference, interviews, entrance exams, etc. They will then assess you based on everything together. If you're an exceptional candidate overall but did badly in one AS subject that won't automatically cost you your place. At the end of the day, it's humans who decide whether to give you an offer or not.
    I also moaned about doing laundry a lot in this video.

    The website doesn't specify that the prospective undergraduate has to be a human; can my cat get it (I've predicted him high A-levels)?

      Dixavd I'd rather bring in dogs.
      They're more competitive for their owner and what they pursue.
      The environment is far too dangerous for a measly cat 🐱

    • @ashmeista143

      Conor Chaplin Tbh, Cambridge look a lot less at the Personal Statement than you'd think. I think its a bit imposing to ask him to look over it, but maybe he will. You can easily get a teacher to read it and that will be fine. And no you don't need to wear a suit - you can wear anything but just stick to something smart-casual say shirt, chinos and jumper. And in terms of getting in - just be super passionate about your subject to the point where you can easily hold up an indepth 30 minute discussion about what you enjoy about your subject. Your ability is something they can see with the grades and UMS etc... but its the passion that you can show off in your PS and in the way you articulate yourself in an interview.

    • @ashmeista143

      Conor Chaplin Given that you posted your message only a few hours following this video's posting, I doubt Jake is 'ignoring' you, rather just hasn't gotten round to answering any comments yet. More importantly, Jake clearly is not homophobic; he actively fights against homophobia and heteronormativity here in the comments. Unless your comment was a joke... in which case I feel a bit silly, but don't joke about discrimination. Also indicate that it is with an appropriate 'jk' or 'lol' or ':P' etc... so as to avoid future confusion.

    Jake's a little testy today. 8.9% of the UKs income derives from tourism. Of course people want to have a look inside the gates. Oxford and Cambridge are legendary to people from outside the UK, and they want a look at such a lofty place. Reality is, it's a tiny thing in the course of your life that you'll forget by September. The world will never go completely your way. Don't allow such trivialities to mess with your peace. And when you arrive back at home, thank your mother for years of washing hundreds of loads of laundry whilst you were under her roof. And the cooking and picking up after you. Be glad for what you have, and be kind to others. It'll put you in a much better state of being.

    • @ashmeista143
      @ashmeista143 9 років тому +2

      Dennis Siple As much as you might think its not annoying, it does get a tad frustrating i'd imagine. I've been on open days with random tourists around and they annoyed me; i can imagine it''d be quite frustrating as a student when you have to crucially work. He is very glad for what he is, and I'm sure very kind to others, but having a moan is an inherent part of being british. We can surely allow Jake that.

      Ashmeista143 I was just pointing out that it's not that big a deal in the big picture. I'm not disallowing him his freedom of speech - forbid! Methinks he's stressed in the run up to exams and his dissertation.

      Tourism is fine, but there's is a difference of going and taking pictures of a lecture hall for example, and then going outside of people's living areas and taking pictures which can include them in it (in the window, or walking out etc).

    I wish UK schools were a little more open about their international requirements though. I am not at the level probably to get into Cambridge or Oxford myself, but even with AP scores, many schools just say that they'll consider them, offering no guidelines as to what is a reasonable application unfortunately. I ended up aiming low, as I got accepted into all of my choices, and I'm now wondering what would've happened if I had applied to a better school.

    The laundrette footage was interesting and made me very self reflective. It's weird how things change when you grow up.The washing machine is just this weird contraption that you ignore or are fascinated by as a kid. As you grow older, you know its function but don't ever do it. But once you're incharge of yourself, you have to start worrying about washing instructions and drying and bags and effort. Hmm.... life eh.
    Looks like Spoons does not lose your custom no matter how infuriated laundry and cyclists make it. That level of dedication deserves recognition and next time I visit Cambridge's Weatherspoons I expect to see a hand painted portrait of you decorating its grand foyers with busts in your honour and a dedicated 'Wright Seat'. Actually, this is Spoons... meh a framed selfie will do.
    See cyclists... thats what happens when you don't listen to Jake. His worst nightmares come true. You all need to pay more attention.
    Good luck with any final few exams you've got left. Hopefully mine won't f**k me over, as you predicted yours would on Twitter. How is that relationship going btw? I expect to see a Girlfriend Tag. Wait... does paper count as female? Tbh at 1 am (when I'm typing this) I don't really care.
    So yeah... again... best of luck mate! :)

    I can imagine it being unpleasant when tourists make it feel like students are attractions in a human zoo.
    Jake's Twitter followers know that the dissertation is now complete. It is a nice way to keep updated on the happenings of our favorite vlogger.
    I can totally appreciate Jake's laundry frustrations. Fortunately I've got my own machines in my basement, which makes it easier. I do a washer load in the evening and then start it in the dryer before I go to sleep. I'll give it a quick re-dry for a few minutes the the next day to unwrinkle it before I take it out. I _hate_ folding my laundry! It feels so mindlessly repetitive and I'm not a great folder. I used to find matching my black socks to be a real pain. My socks are different shades of black based on their age. I used to like to try to avoid mating a more faded one with a newer darker one. I was even pondering developing an augmented reality app to assist with sock mating for a time. I have since just decided to lower my standards. It will all average out eventually anyway. I want a robot that folds my clothes for me! I am not good at ironing, so I try to avoid it. I sometimes use a fabric steamer on some formal clothes and uniforms. I'm not great with that either, but it is easier.
    I wish Jake well as his last academic year draws to a close. I am looking forward to seeing a bit of the May Ball, his vacation vlogs, and whatever he plans to share with us from the next chapter of his life. :)

    • @ashmeista143

      Perspectologist The tourists conundrum is a difficult one indeed. The curious thing is they seem equally interested in the students as the buildings. I could understand if it was a fascination with architecture, as that is rather beautiful, but tourists seem equally fascinated with the inhabitants. Now of course, the inhabitants might be equally beautiful as the buildings, but it is rather demeaning to be an attraction i suppose. Interactions with tourists however are always very quaint. I've once helped to direct a lovely Japanese couple to an Oxford college, and they complimented me on my Japanese, which was very self affirming.
      Jake's twitter is an excellent way of keeping up to date with him. Generally though, the Twitters of both Jake and Claudio are wonders, offering humorous, sassy and occasionally deep insights into life.
      Amen when it comes to socks. That damn problem of trying to match shades and seams, holding infinite numbers next to each other and meticulously examining their colour... I've found a great new invention which are black socks, but that have a stripe of colour to make it easier to match them. I'd recommend them, though the AR sounds way cooler. Also, I've now embraced Jamie's Odd Sock Revolution and am firmly happy with the freedom. Just a recommendation.
      Jake will remain one of, actually, my favourite vlogger on UA-cam. He just has this weird charm which is thoroughly entertaining to watch. Of course he'll stay my favourite vlogger only until I come and usurp him once I start my own vlogs in Oct when I begin Uni. Self preferential treatment for the win!! But the boy's got a few more months of Varsity left. :P

    • @Perspectologist
      @Perspectologist 9 років тому

      Ashmeista143 Thanks for the further insight on the tourist situation and for the sock suggestion. I don't think I am likely to want to replace all my socks anytime soon. My socks seem to have a rather long useful service life (many years). I believe I actually own a few pairs of socks older than Jake! I think I have found peace with the sock issue by simply caring less.
      Best wishes on your future vlog. I'll have to take a look once you get started. The world is quite often enriched when well intentioned people take the time to share their view with it. Vlogging is a great way to do that.

    I'm at Cambridge too, currently doing my master degree. I am sorry but it's not true that if you deserve to get in, you will get in. A lot of people that do get in, aren't necessarily suited and similarly, a lot don't get in, who are. Fact is, interviews are an arbitrary way of deciding, especially at 18. Also for people trying to compare a GCSE piece to his 10k dissertation, they are conceptually two completely different things. One is a semi-original piece of research and another one is paraphrasing huge swathes of textbooks.

    I must disagree with the message and tone of this. The admissions process DOES involve hurdles: you must satisfy them first to get a shot at getting in. Once the admissions officers are considering your application, then they attempt to look at a "complete picture" of the applicant.
    However, to say "those who deserve to get in, will" is misleading, even arrogant. Not only are there varying levels of competition for different fields, but no matter what you say, LUCK is involved, too. Something gets the attention of admissions officers that distinguishes one applicant from another - among a plethora of hopefuls who are virtually identical on paper - and we have no way of controlling for that. Many deserving students don't make the cut for purely subjective, personal reasons. I say this as a parent of a student at Cam.

      I agree. I was myself rejected the first time around on the basis that my UMS was lower than the average applicant to that college for my subject, I had no idea UMS even played a part, otherwise I would have tried a lot harder at AS. Additionally, upon viewing the application statistics, there were 106 applications for my subject to that college, a rise of about 46 from previous years, presumably reducing the percentage of applicants they had time to interview. I went on to get the best A level results at my school, and best STEP results (Maths entrance exam) in my school (which included others that went on to study maths at Cambridge that year). I reapplied this year to Queens' and received an unconditional offer. This isn't me bragging or looking for sympathy, I'm just demonstrating that luck plays a big part, there are things that they are looking for that people aren't aware of and not everyone who deserves to get in does.

    Going through the process myself, a lot of luck is involved. There's nothing that can really prepare you for interview - not to say it was scary as it really wasn't imo but they could ask you anything.
    All I would say is, get great AS UMS and do as much as possible to show interest in your subject. Read as much as possible on it and make sure you have the fundamentals, i.e. Know the theory - not just interesting facts aye

    Nice Neistat-like touches, such as putting the camera into washing maschine and then pretending to open it for the first time, even throw a piece of clothing on the camera. Nice. :-)

    I hate doing laundry too. I pay £2.50 per wash and £1 to dry. Most of the time my clothes come out damp, which is so frustrating, and then I have to use my flatmate's clothes rack.

    So I'm a U.S student looking to apply for Cambridge. The entry requirements say that if you score a 5 on at least 5 ap exams you have a better chance of getting in. I didn't do that much AP but I did get college credit from my community college. Will these credits be looked by the admission?

    I know you'll hate me for asking this, but if I get only 2 or 3 a* for gcse but turn out to get 2/3 a* as level, will they still look at those gcses as being a fair representation of my academic status?

    • @claire122333
      @claire122333 9 років тому

      They will take your GCSEs into account but they are weighted significantly less than AS grades. So if you aim for at least 93% ums in your 3 most relevant AS results then that will compensate for your lower GCSE grades

      +Zainab Baber Sattar DO NOT come to cambridge if you want to do medicine! as long as you pass your course at ANY uni you will get a job, cambridge just makes it unnecessarily difficult and you'll hate it. trust me.
