I **love** Dietz lanterns. This one was held together with little more than baby's breath and good wishes, and you brought it back to better than the day it was new. Glorious!
The amount of effort put into restoring that lantern was far more than what is was worth, most would never have bothered based on the extensive damage the rust had caused. BUT, you brought back to life a piece of history that can’t be replicated to the level of authenticity that your restoration brings - priceless!
I watch a lot of these restoration videos. This one was really impressive. I’ve never seen anyone else bring something back that was this far gone. Well done!
Watching this video made me nostalgic for the old days when we'd have to study by this lamp during power cuts at night.... how time does fly ! superb work....
You have a rare talent. Your restoration shows the now and early future generations how we once lived, and the products that were once available for that era. Your restoration is amazing.
I love Lanterns! I have 2 that were gifted to me from a client that I was a Caregiver too. He was in his 80's and the lanterns belonged to his father when the lived in California. Mine are no where as rusted as this one. Thank you for bringing it back to it's glory!!
Most people would just give up and throw that away or just put it somewhere and forget about it. Your dedication to the extremely laborious restoration is commendable! Thank you for the video. Now I know what to use on a few of my own rusted lanterns.
Да будет свет! Мастеру 10+ за мастерство!!!! Это ж из рассыпавшегося металла ,восстановить,невероятно!!!!! Благодарю,интересно смотреть,как возрождается новая вещь из старой.
You are amazing. All the complex pieces and you still manage to put it all together. I didn't think you could save the glass, but 6 hours later, it looks brand new.
This brought back memories of life on the farm -- we had no electricity so we relied on kerosene lamps. This is an oil lamp but they have a physical resemblance to each other. With kerosene we had to pump the lamp to increase pressure when the light dimmed and also we had to increase the height of the mantle (not wick). Yeppers -- I'm that old!!
Watching these videos is like taking a master class on how to make old decrepit things new again. I have restored a few things but nothing on a scale like this when it comes to metal. Mostly I do projects in wood. But after binge watching as many of these videos as possible I'm developing the confidence to restore something I've wanted to for a long time. The rusted carcass of an old bicycle my grandfather got for his birthday in 1921. I'm going to guess the most challenging part will be to find rubber tires of the right style. If anyone knows anything about sourcing tires for antique bicycles I would be grateful.
Хорошая у вас работа, возвращать старым вещам, молодость и красоту. Видно, что вам самому интересно заниматься реставрацией. Спасибо вам за ваш труд...
Wow! Outstanding workmanship! You are a true artist and Craftsman! Excellent restoration. Loved watching it. Thanks for sharing! More than I could handle to simply repair. Well done!! Love the blue metallic paint color with the ruby glass also.
Magical restoration. It's like seeing a magic trick performed and revealed at once. Very gratifying! The glass at the end was a fascinating surprise. 💖
Thank you for the video, I was amazed by your dedication patience and attention to detail. Hopefully, the lamp will give you years of wonderful service. Brilliant job, well done Gordon, Halifax, UK
honestly i didn't expect too much restoration in this video but it turned out to be a lot and I must say you did a fantastic job bringing it back to its glory. loved it ❤️
Hard work but the end result is worth all the trouble. . Also reminds me of the days when we used these lamps in our houses . Thanks for uploading this video.
A monumental effort to get this one useable again. I like refurbishing things, but I think I would have left this one alone. Too many other ones that could use the refurbishing that weren't near crumbling. Thumbs Up!
I was impressed recently as I was going to buy a lantern of DIETZ when a letter rose. Expecting being restored by you 100 years later, and reviving, I want to use it.
That is the best rust remover on the market!!! Great restoration and you did a fabulous job restoring it!! Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Yeah, that one was a bit knackered as they say. I think you did well for a one time on camera lamp lighting, but I would not trust using that lantern for anything else but a decorative piece at this point. The pin holes in the tank will probably always leak as the fuel seems to find any miniscule hole available to run out of. The body fillers will start to cook on the chimney too as it can get pretty hot. I have a lantern like that as well. Thanks for the video.
The only body filler on the chimney is JB weld and it's good up to 500 °F. Not expecting any leaking since I did apply two good coats of fuel tank sealer. @7:20
I remember my Dad cleaning the glass and trimming the wicks and filling up the kerosene in our hurricane lamps because we had no electricity in our house in Madras India in the early 60s . And there would be a strong gust of wind and the lamps would go out and my Dad would have to relight the lamps . Those were the days but beautiful memories to cherish . Cheers from Australia .
Pretty amazing restoration. I was wondering how you would accomplish this with the thin metal and pinholes. Filler to the rescue! Great problem solving and the array of filler used was impressive. Fun to watch. Thanks so much!
still have one like it at home, in Algeria called Kanki or Mosbah It was used in the past in areas where there was no electricity. I love him so far and sometimes I take him with me to the woods... What are the most beautiful tools that our ancestors used at the time?
Personly, Even with JB Weld I would not use a lantern in that condition again. The risk is too high it would leak again. For a display piece definitely.
You are an incredible craftsman. That thing was a hunk of junk and you turned it into a jewel. I have an old one like that but it is in much better shape.

Wonderful work. Hats off to you. I also have a Hurricane Lamp same as this one and that awaits restoration. Your work has spurred me to take it up in right earnest. But instead of red glass the one I have with me has a translucent glass. Nice video.
The red glass lamps were sold as signal lamps to be used by road crews, etc. at night. Not super useful as a regular lamp like your though. Good luck with your restoration. I recommend using tank sealer for the fuel tank.

I love them, too. That's when simple, clever engineering was all it took to be efficient.
But, could it get any better than the day it was new?😉
@@Seemsayin Well….you could say that it was already ‘broken in’, I suppose.
Always nice to see worn history revived.
I love them too but the fact that they are still being made is partly because electric lighting isn’t available to everyone. Makes me sad

Quality workmanship….not just rebuilt but you’ve rendered it completely functional. Lots of elbow grease…thank you for sharing this with us…Mac
You worked a miracle on this.
I was really impressed on how well you restored the globe!
Time really took it's toll on this lamp, but you did a fantastic job bringing it back to life. Outstanding work, thanks for sharing.

The amount of effort that goes into dirtying up the pieces to make them look much worse than they already are is admirable.
Nah. That's how I found it. I'm not artistically inclined enough to make something look this bad.

I'm genuinely shocked that it didn't dissolve in the rust remover.
Yeah. With the way it looked after sandblasting, it would've made a perfect watering can than a lantern.
These old implements were made of really good quality steel. Everything on this lamp was hardened (including the glass).
