I think it can depend on where you grow up. If I’m not mistaken Camila grew up in a diverse area, so maybe not in her case. I really wasn’t educated until I was a junior in high school. There is really no excuse, but I grew up in a small hick town that was predominantly white. In towns like mine no adult has these conversations with the kids. They make it sound like racism died a long time ago without explaining how certain things can still be racist (jokes, words, etc.). I wish they did so I didn’t spend so much time being so disgusting. I can probably count on one hand how many times I’ve fell victim to racism from someone who was black, and that’s as an adult mind you. Black people have had to put up with racism practically EVERY day of their entire lives. So yes, some black people are racist, but unless you’re completely ignorant, it’s beyond obvious that the scales of racism are tipped to one side.

Age isn’t an excuse lol. I’m 14 and, if you’re brought up being anti-racist (and I’m lucky I have parents that aren’t racist, sexist, homophobic, classist etc), you, in most cases, will learn that this shit isn’t ok. But unfortunately a lot of kids, white kids especially, aren’t raised this way. Even at school, since I’m white, when other races aren’t around you hear some white kids make all kinds of racist jokes and things like that, particularly to asians and aboriginal peoples (I’m from Australia). They don’t mind doing it in front of myself and other white people but won’t dare and get embarrassed or start laughing if anyone else is around. That’s why white people need to call shit out within white spaces, because a lot of it happens in those spaces and is encouraged in those spaces.

As an asian women I have experienced racism, too. Probably not as much as other POC do, though. The “I was only 15!” excuse bothers me greatly because I was teased by my peers for my heritage quite often and this excuse implies that it was okay for them to do this to me because they were young. I was young too and it hurt a lot. My feelings are completely ignored because of their age?
