For me, I think the Collen Ballinger situation was unique in making that binge for content happen more. This was one of the first times I was actively searching for the same sort of reaction content from as many sources as possible, mainly because that video was so wild I think it altered my brain and I had to see other people's thoughts on this woman setting her career on fire via ukulele in order to really process it.

Totally agree. I don't have many friends who have been watching UA-cam for as long as I have. I had no-one to talk to about the allegations and when she posted the most cringe, tone-deaf response, naturally I wanted to experience the insanity with other people.
I just wanted to see other people's reactions to feel validated 😂

The situation is also unique in that Ballinger spent years playing this obnoxious, grossly sexual character and received so much praise and adoration for it, but then once her core fanbase finally got old enough to properly understand the devious sexual implications behind most of Miranda's "humor", they all (rightfully) felt disgusted and wanted to hold her accountable.
Still, I can't help but feel it's a little like arresting Brian Cranston for cooking meth on TV. Sure, Breaking Bad never did a live tour but the stuff she did on that stage (as horrific as it was) was expected by everyone in attendance. Hell, the girl on TikTok said she went there HOPING to get called on stage to participate in a skit! THAT'S the really creepy part. Because I honestly don't think she's a pedo; just a hack comedian. Still, why was Miranda Sings EVER a thing?

This ukulele apology situation has been the rare case for me where i actively go and watch a whole bunch of different reaction videos even from people I'd never heard of before. It's like the youtube version of having something so insane happen to you that it's all you can talk about for the entire day. It's validating to see other people be as baffled and shocked as you are.
That's the merit of reaction videos as opposed to video essays, that you get to see someone process events in real time. So it works well for things that are shocking or otherwise emotionally affecting, while video essays are better for making a cohesive argument. I don't want to say one is better than the other - they serve different purposes - but since reaction videos have a lower baseline for effort put in they're also more likely to be misused.

honestly same tbh! my reasonings behind watching them all mainly came from being subscribed to all those creators and being very bored the day the videos all came out. but part of the reason why i watched all of them was how despite everyone having the same census view, each person had some little tiny take that was different, like a different perspective. gabi belle pointed out the fact that colleen had a filter on, and hasanabi reminded made me realize that there needs to be guidelines put in place to prevent the kind of relationships she was in from occurring for example

People kind of stopped coming around because I'm not 'fun'... I can't go out, can't drink because of my conditions and meds - so apparently I just "bring the vibe down" 🤷. I like the laid-back chatty style of commentary channels as a result, in spite of being an adult.
I watch some video essays too, as well as documentaries, and stuff that's more news (tho still Left). People are complex, just because they watch commentary channels doesn't mean that's all they watch. I also watch sci-fi and fantasy stuff.

That "in spite of being an adult" stings a little. I don't think enjoying commentary videos is a sign of immaturity, I think it's just human. I think it's natural to want to explore other people's opinions about something, even if you can't directly interact with it. You should do your best to form your own, of course, but people historically have been bouncing ideas and opinions off of each other since time in memorium. Without it we wouldn't have a society. Especially when you're isolated, it can be a real solace to know other people think about the things you do and how different and similar those thoughts are. I speak from experience, commentary channels have kept the light lit that reminds me I'm a person with thoughts and opinions that also matter.

Yes multiple people can talk about the same things, have the same format or even address the same talking points but it doesn’t mean you’re watching a carbon copy of the same *person.* I’d say more often than not, audiences are coming for the person and not just the commentary - if they don’t enjoy the person they likely wouldn’t watch their commentary no matter what it’s on. If you’re on commentary UA-cam for the most profound takes and revelations rather than a relatable laugh with a fun, likable UA-camr…that’s kind of on you.

Also. Take I am going to be sad if it’s hot to people. Multiple sources condemning child grooming being spun as purely vulturey is just so fucking annoying to me especially in a culture that didn’t believe Adam for 3 years when he came forward with an hour of hard evidence _as a minor._
Yeah, some people are covering this and they don’t care about victims of grooming. Consult keemstar and the girl he’s with young enough to be his child. Consult the people defending Colleen who will have an easier time doing so if her crimes are kept on the dl and not spoken of by many people.
I get the unpleasant true crime aspect. But a lot of these crimes against children by youtube adults aren’t being covered properly or taken seriously in mainstream media without the community having to self police first.
Having multiple people back you up and confirm your story, especially as a DARVO survivor, is fucking everything. This is important for the victims and survivors of Colleen and her family, Kory, and Kodee, and that’s who I think of first when I see these videos. I hope watching other adults tear these creeps apart over and over is able to help the victims who were put through so much fucking worse by these creators, that they’re able to laugh, that they’re able to see their stories told accurately and that other people are in fact disgusted and enraged by the abuse they’ve had to experience.
Other people. Who can see the DARVO. When you on the inside couldn’t for SO LONG. And who confirm that not only are you not crazy, but the abuse *cannot* be your fault, and you never did anything to deserve it, ever, is incredibly valuable.
Hearing anyone from the friends who helped me flee my family’s house to strangers on /askReddit be upset when I described things I never considered abnormal in a family is validating.
It’s validating in a way that just one or two people, no matter how deeply I love them, can’t provide in the same way as seeing hundreds, thousands, of people confirm your experiences as DARVO abuse without ever having met you, because their stories are identical to yours.
I became aware I had survived and still deal with DARVO abuse because of being able to compare notes with other victims and with people who unpack this shit for a living. I cannot stress enough how much comparing notes can save you.

For me, commentary UA-cam still holds significance to me as my gateway into video essays and deep dives and other things I really have grown to enjoy. I think being exposed to this type of content and space for open dialogue has made me a more compassionate and socially conscious person. I think that’s maybe why, even after I’ve kind of “phased out” of my peak of watching it, I still come back to these same creators.
Like most of the internet I think I developed a kind of morbid fascination with the garbage fire that is the Colleen Ballinger apology video- it feels like if you aren’t talking about it or consuming content about it there’s no way it is real. I watched all of those commentary videos, and saw this Twitter interaction play out in real time. I think part of the mass consuming/mass binge-watching of youtube videos is also just... parasocial. Like a lot of it for me is that I need background noise to do anything, and TV feels so rehearsed (bc it is obviously) but a youtube video (especially if its a commentary creator I enjoy) can start to feel like a facetime call or like an infodump session which I also enjoy. Then when I watch multiple videos on the same topic from different people, it almost feels like a groupcall or like I'm hanging out in a group and I just get to sit back and listen to everyone's opinions and agree or disagree in a safe way, AND I don't feel pressured to have the same level of input or passion on the topic if I don't feel like it because I know its just a video, so ultimately I can just click away.

    • @memegazer
      @memegazer 11 місяців тому

I don't think it is weird.
If something is popular people want to know why...and there is nothing wrong with those people hearing about that from creators they are already familar with.
It is almost an obligation for a lot of creators to weigh in with their perspective.
I don't think that is weird for a creator to serve up fan service.
So put yourself in the creators shoes...some popular social thing is happening, your audience reaches out to you for your reaction and input.
That is a huge incentive beyond the algo to chime in on the subject.
People all too often think of algo driven content as a one way street when it is not.
There is a feedback mechanic there as well...social media algos want to stay relevant and they design their algos to amplify trends bc that is a safe bet.
So you can't blame just the social media platforms for it, as if user engagement and consumption metrics play no part.
If you really think it is weird in some toxic way the best thing you can do is not engauge.
Otherwise you are just feeding into the feedback loop.

That is on you if watch every vid about it.
And you also played a role in making the topic trending if you did that.

Noah...and Philip defranco...even though more creators I am subbed to made vids about it.
I got caught up with social media news with phil but I was curious about noahs take so I watched his vid also.
But I didn't binge every vid about it, complaining about how everybody needs to stop talking about it...bc I know that fuels the feedback loop on a personalized algo level and on a trending level and I had already lost interest.

Personally, each creator has a different style of comedy and editing that adds a refreshing take. I don't really know how this is different than the "twitter meme of the week" phenomenon where jokes are just different versions of the same templates. I watch commentary channels mostly because I like stories and stories about real people are intriguing, especially when they're doing weird things. Even though a lot of the people I watch end up covering similar topics with the same/similar takes, they get there in unique and entertaining ways. I mean just with this situation, you approached your critiques calmly and even said the song wasn't bad independent of its content/context, but Nick absolutely did not like the song and reacted very dramatically with absolutes. Both might have presented the same core argument, maybe even repeating some rhetoric, but I would be hard-pressed to think these two videos were "clones" of one another or delivered the same viewing experience. End of the day it's nothing too deep, it fits into my day easier than absurdly long articles that break down a pop culture moment and it's entertaining to see different people's takes of goofballs online.

I tune in and out of my active watching so to say, as I alternate between listening to music while I work, letting the video trickle on me while I focus, or actively watching again when smth caught my attention. Generally I also enjoy just talking about things for the sake of talking, or differently worded to hear the other person's personal perspective on a topic. I always feel that that gives me the most fulfilment out of a conversation, and commentary videos provide me with a multitude of people's perspectives on demand so to say. It feels like "information absorption", as if maybe I just like to absorb knowledge, any knowledge, as long as it doesn't make me uncomfortable of course.
    'tism creature ✌️

I watch em all because it's nice to see everyone's perspective on the same thing because it does slightly differ and I like hearing the different points on why. Also funny heehaws because I have an empty head

I basically just keep content on when the intrusive thoughts are strong and I want to have someone else’s voice in my head while I do activities. Driving, gaming, chores, etc. can all be ruined by my depressive tendencies so having a UA-camr talking while I go is quite useful. My toddler son also finds commentary UA-cam fascinating to listen to on stroller walks, so that’s fun.

Thank god I'm not alone in my binge, I often watch different takes of the same situation while cooking. But I do subscribe to all these creators and seeing their individual hilarious takes is pretty entertaining. I sort of see it as a collective deep dive. I didn't even notice the thumbnails because the algorithm just bumps me to the next video without having to see them.

I watch a lot of commentary videos kind of on accident. I started watching just a few and then started getting recommended a ton more channels in my feed. I mainly have UA-cam on as background noise while doing other things so it’s nice to have different commentary channels talking about the same thing so that I can get the full story while half paying attention tbh

For me, I am usually there for the energy and the delivery !! It’s quite funny considering the topics tend to overlap, but I really do enjoy appreciating and watching videos that youtubers take time to make. It’s also just nice company to have when I need to take my mind off of stressful things! Funny enough, I didn’t really notice how similar the thumbnails were until I read that tweet. I usually look at the title before I click

I am subbed to 3 out of the 4 channels, and I feel like its partially because I want to support the creators I like and partially because I think that each one of you has a different observation or roast to the videos that change the perspective entirely. Watching Nick's video first was really entertaining because it was his live reaction, and seeing how many times he had to pause the video made me feel like I would do the same thing because watching cringe alone is rough. Gabi and your responses were more planned and thought out, and I wanted to see what jokes would be made. I think of it like junk TV a bit, there are people who can listen to the same people on podcasts ramble about the same topics daily, and I feel like this is a similar context. I just prefer videos that are edited and curated by creators, because its in a controlled environment.

"thumbnails are not content" is one of those lessons my brain like half refuses to learn. Clickability is something I do look for and try for on some level, but at the same time I do often catch myself making thumbs that I think "look good" but only outside the context of a thumb, things that are way too much effort for some reason. Like I get wrapped up in an idea that isn't actually clickable or whatever, or forget what I'm making is going to be seen as... a thumbnail, like barely bigger than 300x200 or whatever.
It's an odd bit of the job, alongside titles where my brain goes "ah make a cool serious title that sounds like an essay" and then I do and it's not "good" algo wise, so the title becomes like "Is [thing] good???" and then I relent and find some odd middle ground.

I genuinely like seeing how each person react, even if it's similar it's reassurance that this is literally mental.
I often doubt my opinion and feel that i might be out of touch, so it's nice to have my opinion and compare to educated opinions to my first and unresearched opinion.

Every video I’ve watched about this situation has given me new different information, I think it’s valuable to have multiple videos on a subject partly because I’ve learned different details from the different creators covering this

i like it when there are interesting and educational topics in commentary videos, but i mainly go for the commentator themselves :)

I guess for me, I like hearing people's takes and see if they say anything new or different. I dont always watch all the videos about the same topic all the way through. But its enjoyable to see everyone's opinions on drama or controversy...or like Colleen Ballinger, crimes.

As one of those weirdos that watched multiple reaction videos about this topic, and have for others in the past, I can say that it feels like having a conversation with someone that is similarly perpetually online and would know the same references as me. Besides that I use commentary videos as a tool to improve my own argumentation skills, expand my knowledge on certain terms, etc, it is very helpful to improve my debating skills as a non-native speaker

I watch a lot of commentary channels when I need to turn my brain off and rest but I'm also selective and like to rewatch to digest any points a creator's made so it leads to a lot of bingeing when I find a new creator. Since I'm always looking for a new creator to challenge my opinion and others I've heard but in this more (but still not entirely) practical space compared to theory, this kind of overlap is great! It means that I can learn about the situation, hear the creators I trust a bit more, and branch out to see if I'm interested in any of these other creators!

Every youtube channel is like a TV station. You can run conent 24/7, like reruns, if you wanted, release movies, announce events, have daily news, and nightly interviews...some youtubers even do the weather.
