  • The Dhātuvibhaṅga Sutta is a deeply moving and touching account of how a pupil recognizes his teacher through his teaching, how the wise recognize the Buddha through the Dharma. Pukkusāti (a former king), who has gone forth out of faith in the Buddha but has never met him, journeys to meet him. They meet halfway in a humble potter's shed, where both of them started off with sitting in meditation.
The Buddha sees that Pukkusāti is ripe for awakening, and gives him a special teaching without revealing himself. The discourse is essentially on what constitutes a person and an awakened saint.
This sutta is from the The Majjhima Nikaya 140, or "Middle-length Discourses" of the Buddha - translated by Bhikkhu Bodhi

    Dear Samaneri
Thank you for reading this sutta.
As a practitioner , I find that The Buddha is guiding us as we practice .We need to understand the doctrines / teachings so that we can practice with right view and the benefits will arise in accordance with the Dhamma
It is important to practice the dhamma "Here and Now" as death may be round the corner ( as what happened to Pukkusati)

Thank you for sharing this penetrating sutra on the breakdown of the elements.
"Just as an oil lamp burns in dependence on oil & wick; and from the termination of the oil & wick - and from not being provided any other sustenance - it goes out unnourished; even so, when sensing a feeling limited to the body, one discerns that 'I am sensing a feeling limited to the body.' When sensing a feeling limited to life, one discerns that 'I am sensing a feeling limited to life.' One discerns that 'With the break-up of the body, after the termination of life, all that is sensed, not being relished, will grow cold right here.'
"Thus a monk so endowed is endowed with the highest determination for discernment, for this - the knowledge of the passing away of all suffering & stress - is the highest noble discernment.
"His release, being founded on truth, does not fluctuate, for whatever is deceptive is false; Unbinding - the undeceptive - is true. Thus a monk so endowed is endowed with the highest determination for truth, for this - Unbinding, the undeceptive - is the highest noble truth.
"Whereas formerly he foolishly had taken on mental acquisitions and brought them to completion, he has now abandoned them, their root destroyed, made like a palmyra stump, deprived of the conditions of development, not destined for future arising. Thus a monk so endowed is endowed with the highest determination for relinquishment, for this - the renunciation of all mental acquisitions - is the highest noble relinquishment.
"Whereas formerly he foolishly had greed - as well as desire & infatuation - he has now abandoned them, their root destroyed made like a palmyra stump, deprived of the conditions of development, not destined for future arising. Whereas formerly he foolishly had malice - as well as ill-will & hatred - he has now abandoned them... Whereas formerly he foolishly had ignorance - as well as delusion & confusion - he has now abandoned them, their root destroyed made like a palmyra stump, deprived of the conditions of development, not destined for future arising. Thus a monk so endowed is endowed with the highest determination for calm, for this - the calming of passions, aversions, & delusions - is the highest noble calm. 'One should not be negligent of discernment, should guard the truth, be devoted to relinquishment, and train only for calm.' Thus was it said, and in reference to this was it said.
"'He has been stilled where the currents of construing do not flow. And when the currents of construing do not flow, he is said to be a sage at peace.' Thus was it said. With reference to what was it said? 'I am' is a construing. 'I am this' is a construing. 'I shall be' is a construing. 'I shall not be'... 'I shall be possessed of form'... 'I shall not be possessed of form'... 'I shall be percipient'... 'I shall not be percipient'... 'I shall be neither percipient nor non-percipient' is a construing. Construing is a disease, construing is a cancer, construing is an arrow. By going beyond all construing, he is said to be a sage at peace.
"Furthermore, a sage at peace is not born, does not age, does not die, is unagitated, and is free from longing. He has nothing whereby he would be born. Not being born, will he age? Not aging, will he die? Not dying, will he be agitated? Not being agitated, for what will he long? It was in reference to this that it was said, 'He has been stilled where the currents of construing do not flow. And when the currents of construing do not flow, he is said to be a sage at peace.' Now, monk, you should remember this, my brief analysis of the six properties." MN 140

    Dear Samaneri 🙏🙏
Thank you for these recitations-they are such a boon for practice. I firmly believe that all the suttas are meant to be read aloud as they carry the transmission of both the scripture and the speaker.
I also have some questions regarding the Theravada Forest tradition and was curious when you are doing another live broadcast.
In terms of my view and context, I am a devotee of Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi , and also practice srividya. And in addition, through the inspiration of your work, I have also been studying Longchen Rabjam who is full of intimate transmission of this awareness. I am amazed and blessed how alive Longchen’s writings are!
Recently, I have also been studying some of the Thai Forest Tradition specifically Ajahn Nyanamoli Thero. Much of his teaching is incisive, challenging and profound, but also I also have discerned significant differences not only with Bhagavan and the Nyingma tradition, for example, but even Theravada Forest tradition itself. I realize this is not surprising as different traditions/sects can entail different interpretations and practices, etc., but Nyanamoli’s teaching seems very different, almost radically so. I am looking for help to clarity and properly discern this matter. Thank you so much 🙏❤️

Hi Greg, I don't have any plans to do a livestream for now but if you would like to formulate your specific question and send it to me at: vivekahermitage@gmail.com
I can do my best to respond. Additionally, there are other Theravadin monastics here that I can tap into for their expertise as well. With all good wishes

@@xtr1499 Hi Greg. I recently received an email which contained a quote from Ajahn Amaro on the theme of different approaches where he said "You cannot align all the loose ends, but you can go to the place they have come from."
