I found/read Bernardette some 30 years ago. She and Meister Eckhart are the only "christians" that have gone beyond the Self and talk about. That is really exceptional in christianity and it is a real shame. What is lacking here is abundant in other perspectives like budhism and vedanta tradition. Unfortunatelly most christians are unable to grasp what she says. But it is great that She has finally open to talk about. Thanks for this video.
Madame Guyon, Fenelon, Molinos, Ruysbroeck, Tauler, Bruno,... There were tons of Christian mystics who understood and communicated the truth as best they could in the language of their time.
I think your underselling Christianity in this regard because the Christian tradition doesn't share the language of "Self" in the same way that the eastern traditions do, so the mystics use different language. Apophatic/Negative Theology is essentially the Christian version of Hinduism's "neti neti" (not this, not that), but rather than use the word "Self" they use the word "God". Neo-Platonism and Kabbalism have influenced Christian Mysticism as well and both systems are fundamentally non-dual.
Don't forget the various hesychasts of the orthodox mystic bransches throughout history. Check out the book A different christianity, by Robin Amis. However, it seems that western mysticism and esotericism never adhere to the notion of no-self. They conclude there is an divine individuality, albeit not separated, i.e the Mind of Christ is both Son and one with the Father. The eye with which I see God is the same eye with God sees me, I think Eckehart said. No dualism between one and two/many. Whereas eastern religions may often just float out in the ocean of no individuality.
For her God is an it. For Jesus God is a Him. In this year 2021AD I think I will take him to be the authority on the subject of Christ. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal Life. John 3:16 Her quote about Jesus "He never knew Christ!" That sounds as ridiculous as to make the declaration that "Bernadette never knew Bernadette!" Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to Me. I think you misunderstand her point. She's saying that Jesus became The Christ after the Ascension, and so obviously Jesus never thought to himself "I am Christ" while he was alive, traveling about, and preaching. Jesus' life showed us the path that all Christians are to walk: first Union, then Death, Resurrection, and finally Ascension- to become one with the risen Christ. Bernadette has talked elsewhere about the theological history to the term "Person". She doesn't reject the Personal altogether, but she acknowledges how over the centuries that the true and original meaning of personhood became distorted, particularly by the psychoanalytic psychologists like Freud and Jung around the early twentieth century.
It doesn't have to be either/or. It can be deeply relational between God/Source and Christ and all our individual Christ-minds AND perfect oneness. No duality between what looks like two perspectives.

There is never any agreement as to the meaning and significance of any religious matter, least of all of Jesus. It is wonderful that people like this are no longer put to the stake in men’s efforts to force everyone to believe the same things about Jesus. The great virtue of Hinduism is all understandings are embraced and argued. But in Christianity we feel we must have ONE truth, and everything else must be false. God, Jesus and all religions are utterly beyond human understanding, and so all frameworks must be permitted.
It should be emphasized that there is a lot of competing views within Hinduism, and Hinduism is not without its own history of violence and suppression. An Advaitin is not a Dvaitin, and each understands the other as an imperfect understanding of the Upanisads. Hindus can be just as critical of each other as Christians, and I speak both from having read classical texts as well as having lived in India and witnessed some of the scorn and judgment. In the West, we are often presented with the best of Hinduism's exports- a polished and simplified version of Hinduism ready for sale in the Western spiritual markets. The actually history and practice of both Hinduism and Buddhism is a lot messier than the most sophisticated and articulate versions of these religions that you''re likely to find. I totally agree though that the revealed mysteries of religion go far beyond what any particular human will come to know, although we can always grow deeper in our own traditions.

Find him in high meditation, and when you notice the gap in your breathe you realize where the - is and your "red sea" will part and you will be scared shitless when He comes. Time and space makes room for an individualized experience/perspective, but that which is beyond time and space is not an individual. The individual is just a temporary pop-up, an experience, an appearance ( advaita vedanta ) or play ( kashmir shaivism ) if you will. From the 'perspective' of the One, beyond even Oneness and "the One", there is no self and there is no other. As such there is no individual in the first place, ever. But of course, on the transactional, worldly, experiential plane/dimension, there is the sense of individuality. Not separated indeed. Bernadette Roberts is one of the few Christians who I have respect for when talking about her experiences as a contemplative. She does her damnedest to make some of these esoteric ideas palatable in a reasonable way. But, I cannot side with her on her beliefs about free will. Nevertheless, her idea of Jesus just being a mouthpiece/instrument of God for His use during his life, seems to match up with Rene Girard's idea that Christ was not just the Word, but the Verb. A man whose words and actions were never compromised. Word and Deed were one.
Just started this but will listen to more. To start off with, through, she's got it right that Crist is a "title." But to say it didn't exist before is incorrect. As Jesus himself said, we are ALL capable of doing what he did AND MORE! Hence, that Christ nature or Buddha nature or whatever you want to call it exists in us all and it is our ultimate goal to connect with it. Enlightened beings have known this for literally centuries. Even Jesus wasn't teaching anything new. And, BTW, there was NO ISRAEL in Jesus' time, so I don't know how he was supposed to save it!

I'm very interested in what Bernadette has to say, but this seems full of holes. The OT is full of passages about God saving all nations, not just Israel. How could people believe women contributed nothing beyond the womb when children look like both parents? A very shallow understanding of predestination and free will imo. Jesus is called the Christ in the NT while he is still alive, I think she is using the term in a different way to the NT.
She is using the term Christ in a different sense than it is used in the NT as a title or annointed. She means by the term what the body has become once consciousness has left the building.

Just started this but will listen to more. To start off with, through, she's got it right that Crist is a "title." But to say it didn't exist before is incorrect. As Jesus himself said, we are ALL capable of doing what he did AND MORE! Hence, that Christ nature or Buddha nature or whatever you want to call it exists in us all and it is our ultimate goal to connect with it. Enlightened beings have known this for literally centuries. Even Jesus wasn't teaching anything new. And, BTW, there was NO ISRAEL in Jesus' time, so I don't know how he was supposed to save it!

I think "Israel" in the time of Jesus referred to the Jewish people as a whole, not a sovereign nation with distinct borders.

I'm very interested in what Bernadette has to say, but this seems full of holes. The OT is full of passages about God saving all nations, not just Israel. How could people believe women contributed nothing beyond the womb when children look like both parents? A very shallow understanding of predestination and free will imo. Jesus is called the Christ in the NT while he is still alive, I think she is using the term in a different way to the NT.
She is using the term Christ in a different sense than it is used in the NT as a title or annointed. She means by the term what the body has become once consciousness has left the building.
