As the years have gone on, my frustrations over e-waste have definitely grown. Like, fine, if i have to pay for something, so be it. but when there is nothing wrong with the old technology, why should it just be thrown away. Let us reuse them.
Would also like to throw in my support for Eufy. The indoor cams are typically on sale for ~$30, and they integrate very well with HomeKit and iCloud, and don't require their own Eufy Cloud subscription.
That's why I chose Eufy. I also plan to migrate to local storage on a NAS, bypassing the cloud service altogether. I will probably learn about some downsides along the way, but that's what I hope to do
@CGG_GSS True that. They have an SD slot, which I believe you're able to store video with, but I've never fooled around with it to really speak to the user experience/recommend as an option.
@@TheMycroft1 Are you able to dump video to a network location with Eufy? I bought my cameras a few months back, and since I already had iCloud storage (and since the Eufy footage doesn't count against storage usage) I never ventured to really dig into the options. Pretty cool if they do that.
Yeah, they just run facial recognition and stream recordings to their servers (unencrypted I might add) despite claiming everything is local. Eufy’s reputations dead
For people in the UK, take a look at Hey! Their cameras have an SD Card inside them which they record to and the SD Card actually come with the device which is not normal these days. The cameras are reasonably priced, well built, and the live feed is FREE. They do have a paid cloud service but you don’t have to use it, just use the SD Card
I personally use Eufy Cam 2C from Anker because they have both a base station for free recording with local storage, cloud viewing TO your local storage, but most importantly they support Apple’s camera streaming and Recording in the home app. So I have everything integrated through my apple home app and that’s it!
I would look at an Apple Homekit compatible camera. There are some that store footage locally, so don't depend on a cloud service, and there are others that store to iCloud, or let you store to a NAS.
@@TailosiveTech I suggest the Aqara G3, which also acts as a hub. It has a lot of neat features, including pet or human tracking, gesture control, 360 degree range, and has USB-C and support for HomeKit Secure Video (though I think you canceled your iCloud storage). Amazon has them on sale for $89 each. I’ve also had good luck with Eufy cameras, which have a slot for an SD card. In the new HomeBase 3 (which Eufy’s connect with as a hub), you can even put an SSD in it for massive years-long storage. The only drawback with Eufy is micro-USB, though you can just use the cable it came with. None of these require plans. I’m not crazy about Eve cams because their videos are very grainy and just flat out look bad. The Aqara and Eve both support 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wifi, which is tough to find. Most only support 2.4GHz.

This is why Homekit is so nice. If products are Homekit certified it doesn’t matter if the manufacturer goes out of business it should still work in Homekit. I never use the manufacturer’s app go all native Homekit and you’re set. Get a few eufy (anker company) cameras on Black Friday they are cheap, good, and have home secure video. You pay for iCloud storage? No other subscription needed I think you can have up to 10 cameras with free recording. And being Homekit it all works better in your Apple world. Enjoy! I know you will!
I don't have any security cameras but if I was interested in doing that, I would just get some that work completely disconnected from the internet, and can backup to a local hard drive so that I never have to pay for viewing footage. Viewing live would obviously need an internet connection but otherwise all you would need is like a single 1tb drive and only save like a week's worth of footage at a time and you're good to go
I have Unifi cameras from Ubiquiti and love them, but you need a Unifi console that supports Unifi Protect in order to use them. No subscription fees and video is stored locally on my Unifi controller and I can access history or live feed anywhere with the app.
Not a fan of subscription model. I have invested into HIKvision cameras that come with an app for the live view free of charge; you can also get a DVR from HIK (I use Synology NAS with Surveillance Station software). Yes, up front investment is heftier, but then there are no monthly fees. And Synology NAS has so many more use possibilities - I use media storage, streaming back end (using Plex), photo backup among other uses.
