Thank you. I was looking for what oil to use. Lucky me I've got some linseed oil at home. I will try this today.

Hi there, gun stocks are generally made from French or Turkish walnut. This one is Turkish walnut.

Do you use boiled oil later?

Thanks for your message. I generally stay with raw linseed throughout the process, it’s just my preference. Some people like to use boiled but I find it a bit stiff, there probably could be a case for using it on the final couple of applications. What I’m doing here is getting the process under way with raw yellow. After a 4/5 coats I use linseed with Alcanet red root infused in it to give a nice rich tone.

@@andyduncanstockmaker9966 I have a "recipe" that uses Alkanet Root powder, Linseed oil, Tung oil and Japan Hardener to replicate the color and finish on older Winchester stocks that have a reddish finish to them.

@@pete7413 Thanks Pete.. I’m interested in Japan hardener, can you tell more about that please..?

@@andyduncanstockmaker9966 I add the Japan Hardener, which I got from Home Depot, before use as it will cause the alkanet root powder infused linseed oil and tung oil mix to harden. I only make enough for that days use. I can post recipe and ratio here if you like.

    What oil are u using?

    • @andyduncanstockmaker9966

The first coats are raw yellow linseed oil. It’s best to use this before adding any other stain as you can see how the wood is going to react, if the wood stays pale you can add some dye to darken but as in this case the stock went quite dark so I didn’t need to add anything other than more oil. Thanks, Andy

@@andyduncanstockmaker9966 hi I’m trying to refinish a Henry H001 stock and hand guard. I am using raw linseed oil. However the stock and hand guard seem to be made from different parts of the walnut tree and therefore are different colors. What brand/color dye do you recommend to match the color? Also what’s the process for application with the dye. Thank you in advance!

@@gavinm1347 Hi Gavin, thanks for your message and apologies for slow reply. If you can lay your hands on spirit based Colron or Liberon wood dyes use those. If you can get the Walnut tone or Teak use that to tone down the lighter areas of the wood.
