Good Job with the explanations. One minor detail Yin Tiger is not named after Yin-Yang. Yin for Yin Tiger is this word: 寅, Yin for Yin-Yang is this word: 阴. Instead, the Yin for Yin Tiger came from 天干地支, literal translation: Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches, each of the 12 Earthly Branches corresponds to an animal. The Earthly Branch "Yin" corresponds to tiger, hence Yin Tiger, just as the Earthly Branch "Chen" corresponds to dragon, hence Chen Dragon. Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches are used in combination for astrology as well as labeling and counting years.
My brother and I were named after the earthly branches! My brother's Chinese name, who was born in the year of the tiger, is 寅杰, and I, who was born the year of the monkey is, 申杰

There actually is one more boss in chapter 3 that you didn't cover which can be missed easily (and doesn't even have an English name). Back in chapter 2, right before the fight with the King and 2nd prince, there are two two-headed rat generals who are looking for a traitor. In that same area, there are a couple of abandoned houses, inside of which a third two-headed rat general is hiding. if you talk to them enough, they mention the ills of their kingdom and that their kingdom's only hope is to find the 3rd prince and bring him back. Now, if you talk to the rat general before finishing chapter two, their body will be found in the same cage as the third prince, and you can collect their sword and its transformation spell right then and there, but if you go through chapter three and liberate the 4 generals before talking to the rat general, instead you will find them lamenting the loss of their homeland's prosperity, and the presumed death of the 3rd prince, and they will fight the destined one (for some reason) and only after defeating them will they drive their weapon through themselves dying and letting the destined one collect their weapon and transformation spell. In the most recent update for the game (at the time of this comment) they only have their Chinese name which just translates as 'Rat General', but they are still a boss if you ask me since they do have a boss health bar. Also, one cool little detail about the 3rd prince is that he mentioned having removed his eye(s?) to avoid the beguiling chant that the Mani wheel periodically releases, and when you look at his feet when the chanting begins, there is a singular glowing red orb on the ground in front of him, and notably no glow coming from where his eyes would be on his face.
that is so damn crazy. How could you even figure that out? This game was built for ng+ for sure. I saw the alternate ending to the final chapter 5 fight and figured out how to trigger it but that's light work compared to that secret
I never noticed the red orb on the 3rd prince's feet, when I heard he removes his eyes and deafen his ears, I still see his eyes. just with a scarlet pupil along with a dark sclera.
I think there's a heavy implication that Yellowbrow has some kind of brainwashing ability, possibly involving The Bag which was enhanced by the Hubris Nose. Combined with his natural persuasiveness, it's probably why Kang Jin Star ended up in his service, possibly convinced that all deities were actually just as self-serving and were just less honest than Yellowbrow about it. It would also explain why two of the Third Prince's captains ended up joining him, and also the pre-final battle sequence of the Destined One turning into the Macaque Chief that he just killed, with Yellowbrow trying to convince him to embrace bloodlust and become his new Macaque Chief. Personally I'm also unsure if the Third Prince's captains always looked like those eldritch abominations or if Yellowbrow twisted them into their current forms. I remember the journal entry talking about how Yellowbrow chopped off Kalpa Wave's head, how his spiked mace caused countless eyes to grow from Lotus Vision's body, and how he mutiliated and attached countless arms to Void Illusion. Feels like he has something to do with it, especially since I don't recall any other characters in the game looking as bizarre as them. Their forms feel downright artificial.
Ummm there is a reason for that From the novel , yellowbrow used to be sutra boy (choir boy) for Maitreya buddha. One day he stole the seed sack and the mace from Maitreya treasures from the celestial realm and escaped to the mortal world. Now since time moves slowly in celestial realm so he aged into yellowbrow and called himself a buddha. In the novel , kang jin loong was male btw. Yellowbrow imprisoned wukong in the Golden cymbals and wukong despite trying his best could not escape. It was kang jin loong using his horn to help him escape with immense difficulty. Wukong and 28 constellation generals, the 3rd prince from ch 2 and his 4 captains , turtle and snake generals all faced Yellowbrow . Yellowbrow defeated ALL OF THEM . Only wukong managed to escape and begged and pleaded all in heaven and earth to help him. It was Maitreya who answered his pleading .
Something to add, the more monks you kill as the Macaque Chief spirit, the harder it gets to break Yellowbrow's golden form. Hence, being a butcher does have its consequences. And you CAN just dodge through all of them without even hurting a single one.
Wow…..I had no idea what was even happening during this cut scene…ok it wasn’t a cut scene since you had control over the Macaque Chief but you get what I mean…. so the developers actually made your choice affect the fight with yellow brow this game just has layers and layers doesn’t it. One additional titbit: Chen Loong and Xu Dog have known each other for a while, and they're familiar with each other's personality and mannerisms. Xu Dog knows the old Loong is fine and just hankers for a pill (specifically the Soul Remigration Pill), which is why Xu just gives Chen a much less powerful pill that simply strengthens bones, hence Chen Loong just hucks it away. Also, this pill acts as a sort of message/signal, basically Chen Loong telling Xu that the destined one passed the test and they can all relocate to the RuYi Scroll

Regarding the "Macaque Chief" since I played in Chinese I didn't realize what they translate it and it's pretty confusing translation since there's a more famous Macaque. In chinese he's called the "Red Buttock Horse Monkey" 赤尻马猴 which is one of the 4 types of spiritual monkeys which Wukong is one of them the "Spiritual Intelligent Stone Monkey" 灵明石猴. The Macaque chief is not the Tell Tale Great Sage. Minor corrections, the Yin(寅) in Yin Tiger isn't the same one in Yin(阴) Yang. The Zodiacs is split into Yin and Yang but the tiger is in Yang
To elaborate this 12 Chinese Zodiac are: Zi, Chou, "Yin", Mao, "Chen", Si, Wu, Wei, "Shen", You, "Xu" and Hai. Which are : Rat, Ox, "Tiger", Rabbit, "Dragon", Snake, Horse, Sheep, "Monkey", Rooster, "Dog" and Pig, Yin-Tiger Chen-Loong Shen-Monkey Xu-Dog
I love the story you talk about, but isn't the macaque in that story the "Six-eared Macaque"? Who at the end of that chapter gets removed from the story by Wukong?
@@kratosuncanny3690 Yeah that’s why he doesn’t show up in black myth. Although they could have written in a different Six eared macaque if they really wanted to since the spiritual monkeys are category not individuals

14:30 This is because old Chinese doesn't have a word for "she", instead, we used to use "他“ for both genders. The equivalent character of "she" in Chinese, "她", was created in the early 20th century.
Nice video, it's really great to have such content, but I have several corrections: 1) At 19:44 the Macaque Chief is NOT the original seven sages, he's just a macaque grew up in Huaguo mountain and appointed by Wukong to be one of his generals. After Wukong's downfall, his generals were exiled from Huaguo mountain, some (e.g. the female baboon that gave us material to make the Five Skandhas Pill) wanted to find Wukong's relics to revive him, while others (e.g. the Macaque Chief) were just forced to escape from the wrath of the court. The Macaque Chief led a group of his men (I mean monkeys) to the flaming mountain first, the Bull King gave them a place to shelter but they had a hard time getting used to the environment there. The keeper of the flaming mountain (the yin yang guy in the game) also did not like them there, so he secretly infected some monkeys with a plaque that gave them blisters and wings, which led to the Macaque Chief forcefully expelling all sick monkeys from their habitat. Later the keeper treated the sick monkeys and convinced them to eradicate Macaque Chief and his remaining clique, the rebellion was successful and the Macaque Chief was the only one escaped alive (he later got wings because he was also infected). He then roamed for some time and eventually met Yellowbrow, unsurprisingly he got brainwashed by Yellowbrow to become one of his henchmen. There's also an unconfirmed theory that he's previously a destined one brainwashed by Yellowbrow, because the player also briefly turned into his form when being brainwashed. The one you mentioned, one of the seven great sages (sworn brothers of Wukong), is the Macaque King aka the Telltale Great Sage (通风大圣). The Macaque King is closer to the level of Wukong and the Bull King, basically another chapter boss level character. He should be far more powerful than the Macaque Chief, but didn't appear in the game. 2) At 22:40 he's not a monk at that time, he has the typical backpack of a scholar traveling to the capital to take the imperial civil exam in ancient China (to become government officials). In the dream that's what he and his son did. He eventually became a monk after killing the fox because he couldn't live with his guilt. I'd not be surprised that Yellowbrow implanted that dream into his head guiding him to kill the fox, that's totally something Yellowbrow would do. 3) At 24:50, Yellowbrow was a student of Maitreya (more accurately a boy servant responsible for handling Chimes for Maitreya). Jinchanzi/Tang Sanzang was the second disciple of Tathagata. They don't have the same teacher, but they may consider each other "classmates" as they were both in the Buddhist school. Yellowbrow and Jinchanzi both questioned Tathagate's teachings but on very different basis, Yellowbrow believed in serving self-interests and Jinchanzi believed in equality for all. They have argued about it on a Buddhist convention in some kind of debate competition, and since then Yellowbrow kept trying to prove he's right. In the game Maitreya claimed that Yellowbrow tricked him twice to steal the sack and caused all the trouble, and that he came in a bit late to save the day himeself. Bajie was clearly doubtful about it. It is quite likely that Maitreya used Yellowbrow to set the whole thing up, for what reason except testing the destined one? I don't know.
Also for Kang-Jin Loong, she and the Rooster deity were close to Wukong (helped him in JTTW) and actively looked for him after his disappearance. The others of the 28 zodiac deities more or less kept their distance because they knew the celestial court disliked Wukong. At the end the Loong and the Rooster met their separate bitter ends, hard to say there wasn't a push from the court to get rid of these Wukong sympathizers. Kang-Jin Loong was brainwashed by the sack because it has the power to kind of "hypnotize" people (power from Wukong's relic). She did not get killed after being defeated by the destined one as she was still breathing and didn't turn into ashes like others. Maybe we could see her as an ally in DLC after Maitreya removes her brainwash effect from Yellowbrow. Who wouldn't want her (in either form) on your side eh
Yin tiger is named so because the 12 zodiacs each associate with a "ganzhi" (stem-branches) sign according to the ancient Chinese sexagenary cycle. It is of a different character to the "yin" in "yin and yang", for the tiger 寅 and for yin-an-yang, 阴. The "ganzhi" system consists of 10 天干 i.e. Heavenly Stems and 12 地支 i.e. Earthly Branches, first used for recording days then later years. In the game you see each of the Zodiac deities with their associated Earthly Branches in their "names": Chen Loong, Xu Dog, Shen Monkey, with Chen, Xu and Shen being Earthly Branches: 辰,戌,申。
Hey, I watch AfroSenju and wanted to say great work with everything you do and even shouting out him. You are awesome bro, and your videos are so well done. Keep up the great work! Definitely earned a Subscriber 😁
People have pointed out the Seed Bag with Wukong's relic giving it a brainwashing ability, but I wanted to elaborate on my understanding of it since it hasn't been mentioned. Since the nose relic, in the form of the goldfish, is about desires and such, it seems those affected by it become obsessed with pleasures in service of Yellowbrow. You can pick this up in dialogues Kang Jin Star has in her fight about rejecting justice in favor of pleasure and such. In addition, there's the recurring Horse Guai who in previous chapters is rather somber but in chapter 3, after meeting Yellowbrow and presumably getting the sack, is giggly and all for abandoning his previous mission in favor of enjoying life at the temple. There's also some details in the environmental names leading up to the temple, Forest of Ecstasy and Brook of Bliss, those sorts of things. I am honestly curious what it was that Kang Jin Star learned. I don't know why, but I'm particularly invested in her story, as brief as it is within the chapter. Maybe it's just a fascination with corruption arcs. Oh, and on Kang Jin Star being male in the book but female in the game, I read somewhere that the in-game appearance was based off a specific statue. There were likely other details, but I don't recall them at the moment.
16:05 The Turtle General and The Snake General are the North Star Constellations in Asian mythology. They're supposed to be the incarnations of the impure stomach and intestines of ZhenWu, who discarded them on his ascension to divinity.
The gensing tree (人参果树) Wukong destroyed is not related to medicinal herb gensing. That tree is a divine being, with its fruits granting immortality. Before the game came out, Chinese content creaters speculated Captain Wisevoice in the trailer was the very gensing tree. Overall nice video, good job!

one minor correction, Yin Tiger 寅虎 is not about Yin-Yang 阴阳, it is the 12 Earthly Branches which can either be attached to the 12 Zodiac animals, or 12 hours of a day ( 1 ancient Chinese hour = 2 modern hours). It flows as : 1.子Zi 2.丑Chou 3.寅Yin 4.卯Mao 5.辰Chen 6.己Ji 7.午Wu 8.未Wei 9.申Shen 10.酉You 11.戌Xu 12.亥Hai. Ginseng guais are a well known in Chinese mythology, not from JTTW. Once they reach 1000 years of age ginsengs can become guais. The old ginseng guai should be at least 10,000 years old. Extremely potent ginseng, once eaten can grant immortality.
Triple check is not enough 😂 ginseng fruit and ginseng root are totally unrelated btw, that’s like saying carrot growing on a tree. But great video nonetheless!❤
I think that kung jin was convinced to join with force just like yellow brow tried to do with us: the mf trapped her in there making her go crazy thinking that since yellow brow is stronger than the second strongest being in chinese mithology, the true way is the strongest way, literally bending her will

Nice video, very accurate explanations But your guess about the Ginseng Guais coming from Wukong is propably wrong. The lore about aged Ginsengs becoming self-aware is a popular folktale in China as we have the saying "物老成精" -- old things becomes intellegent. This originally just refers to people, but over time got mixed into folklure and mytholoy. So basically old animals/plants even objects can become yaoguais. As for the tree Wukong pulled up. It's a magic fruit tree which bears baby shaped fruits that grants immortality. Which I think is irrelevant to the Ginseng Guais in the game

I think Kang Jin Star was shown some dark truth about the dieties of the clestial court and mount lingshan(buddism) and the taoism forces (mount Kunlun or Doushuai Palace), and she became desperate. Remember the core spirit of JTTW and BMW is about rebellion against the authorities? there are a lot of hints that foreshadows the dark side of the so called gods (for example, Yaksha's story), Yellow Brow used that to shake Kang Jin Star's faith and belief. That's why she asked yellow brow "漫天神佛,皆是如此吗?" (Are all the gods and buddas in the sky like this?) and then kneeled down to request be received as a student of Yellow Brow. Game Sciense apparently wants to convey to the players the "this" side of the gods and buddas.
Finally we got to the more human final bosses that get to use the relics unlike the first two which have the more animalistic characteristics that can’t use the relics
@Allfa_sun Legit, this comment makes no sense. Their ability to use the relic had nothing to do with their outward appearance and Yellowbrow is not just a human.
Yellowbrow is more much powerful and intelligent than those two because he is technically a god, albiet a minor one. Black Bear cannot absorb the relic and have no vessel to contain it so he seals it above a pagoda. Yellow Rat also cannot absorb the relic but uses a Bodhisattva’s head as a vessel until he can absorb it. Yellowbrow stole the Seed Sack, an artifact of a Buddha, to contain and use the relic. He may not need to or cannot absorb the relic, but i think he is too arrogant of his status as a god that he wouldn’t taint himself with a Yaogaui relic. Hundred-Eyes Taoist didn’t absorb the relic directly but uses it through a vessel, the Violet Spider, because she is technically a minor god. Then we have Red Boy who can directly absorb the relic and Great Sage Broken Shell that can withstand all 6 relics by itself. I think its about power level and their origins.

Ummm there is a reason for that
From the novel , yellowbrow used to be sutra boy (choir boy) for Maitreya buddha.
It’s unlike any other game I’ve played and I play RPGs. Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Earthbound, Mother 3, etc. This game is so unique thanks for pointing this out.😊
@@Sightless-vz2wh IKR? If you ever read Journey to the West, you'll understand just how much love and dedication went into the tiniest details of this game. We don't know who the real author of the novel was, but for a sequel made by game developers, my god it feels accurate.
@@ChompingCabbage I literally hadn’t heard of Journey to the west at all until….August like last month August but I’ve been watching so many videos about the lore for this game it’s so interesting….i Will eventually have to read the book itself.
Dude no wonder it was so easy i dident kill a single monk because it felt weridly wrong
Oh I had no idea I that was a mechanic. I just didn't kill anyone because it's not Buddhist like to kill wantonly. Glad to know it made that fight easier.
Love afro for shouting ur channel out. This has to be the best breakdown of the lore I’ve seen online. The 10 day wait was so worth it.
The sack with Wukong's relic gains the ability to brainwash anyone entering it, so Kang-jin star was brainwashed, also she just fainted after the battle
Does she re-appear later in the game?
@@SilverByakuyaNot as far as I know (I'm in chapter 4 right now). Most Bosses fade away after being defeated. I think "Important" Characters like the Chapter Bosses and "major" NPCs/Bosses like Kang-iin Star are still alive and only K.O.ed. They have too much narrative potential.
@@dajoka97k.70 Pretty sure only first 3 Chapter bosses are still alive(Black Bear surrendering, Yellow Rat never fade and assuming Yellowbrow still alive after sinking) while the rest are dead(100 eyes Daoist for sure died and Red Boy skewered his own neck).
@@nazrin992yes. Wukong killing the Macaques Chief is actually significant, as most of the things he beat along the way aren’t dead
Yeahh I also think she didn't die because she looked like she just passed out from the impact lol
Bro this is peak lore breakdowns. the level of editing done on these videos goes far beyond what they needed, and that just makes them all the more special
AFRO COLLAB!!
LETS GET ITTTT!!!
Ummm there is a reason for that

These lore videos have been amazing! I'm here from watching Afro watch them, and decided to watch them directly too!
My friend and I were literally talking about how you've only made 2 videos so far because of how new the game is. You are making videos as I finish the chapters as well, it's a nice thing to look forward to in parallel. Been a while since I was this early into the community aspect of the game. Glad to see your channel grow.
To elaborate this 12 Chinese Zodiac are:
Zi, Chou, "Yin", Mao, "Chen", Si, Wu, Wei, "Shen", You, "Xu" and Hai.
Which are :
Rat, Ox, "Tiger", Rabbit, "Dragon", Snake, Horse, Sheep, "Monkey", Rooster, "Dog" and Pig,
Yin-Tiger
Chen-Loong
Shen-Monkey
Xu-Dog
I love the story you talk about, but isn't the macaque in that story the "Six-eared Macaque"? Who at the end of that chapter gets removed from the story by Wukong?
@@kratosuncanny3690 Yeah that’s why he doesn’t show up in black myth. Although they could have written in a different Six eared macaque if they really wanted to since the spiritual monkeys are category not individuals
@@kratosuncanny3690 Yeah, that’s why he didn’t show up in the game. Although they could have introduce a new 6 eared macaque if they really wanted to, since the spiritual monkeys are categories
@@InnerTriggerer I hope we can see the rest of the zodiac in the upcoming DLC
14:30 This is because old Chinese doesn't have a word for "she", instead, we used to use "他“ for both genders. The equivalent character of "she" in Chinese, "她", was created in the early 20th century.
I guess this leaves room for the interpretation on her gender
Yes yes yes this! So a translator would likely mistake it as “he” if the character isn’t explicitly described as female.
Nice video, it's really great to have such content, but I have several corrections:
1) At 19:44 the Macaque Chief is NOT the original seven sages, he's just a macaque grew up in Huaguo mountain and appointed by Wukong to be one of his generals.
Is Macaque king one of the demon kings just like the bull king?
Amazing insight and thoughts 👏
been waiting for this!! thanks mate!
16:05 The Turtle General and The Snake General are the North Star Constellations in Asian mythology. They're supposed to be the incarnations of the impure stomach and intestines of ZhenWu, who discarded them on his ascension to divinity.
Whooo, I love this series so I am always looking forward to a new entry
The gensing tree (人参果树) Wukong destroyed is not related to medicinal herb gensing. That tree is a divine being, with its fruits granting immortality. Before the game came out, Chinese content creaters speculated Captain Wisevoice in the trailer was the very gensing tree. Overall nice video, good job!
I have been warching your videos ever since the achapter 1 boss lore video on Afro's channel. These videos can't come soon enough❤. Time to lock in 🔥

Appreciate all the work you put into this! Love from the AfroSenju channel
Hey Bandit! Just wanted to thank you for all the efforts you have been putting out there for us lore fans and i am an absolute fan of the first 2 chapters. For BMW this is the only channel that i follow and refuse to see any other lore videos.
Now just gonna delve myself in the amazing video that i know it already is!

I absolutely love the detailed videos that go over everything like this, exactly what I want
ALSO I LOVE THE MUSIC YOU CHOOSE, its all so nostalgic because I have heard them all :)
Great video, thanks for the explanation.
I'm loving this game and your bosses' lore videos, keep them up.
I can't wait to play chapter 4 and to watch your video about it.
(Love the Zelda themes on the background by the way)
You deserve all the support youre getting from afros channels youre breakdowns are amazing
Thank you so much for these videos!! I love your Zelda content and I’ve been recommending these videos to people who’ve been playing Wukong. I’m currently in chapter 4 so I feel like these videos seem to appear as I progress through the game and I want to learn the story and you do a great job!! Thank you!, 😊
25:38 Wow!!! I noticed a connection between Black Myth WoKung Lore and Naruto Shippuden Lore. I never knew that was what the Ten Tails was supposed to be. A Chinese Heluo Fish. It is the only one who can change forms into a humanoid form.
I love your lore vids I learn so much from them
Another awesome video. By the way i did come from afro's first lore video on wukong. Stucked around because of how good your videos are
one minor correction, Yin Tiger 寅虎 is not about Yin-Yang 阴阳, it is the 12 Earthly Branches which can either be attached to the 12 Zodiac animals, or 12 hours of a day ( 1 ancient Chinese hour = 2 modern hours). It flows as : 1.子Zi 2.丑Chou 3.寅Yin 4.卯Mao 5.辰Chen 6.己Ji 7.午Wu 8.未Wei 9.申Shen 10.酉You 11.戌Xu 12.亥Hai. So basically the name of the zodiac animals you met in the games can be understood as: Tiger the 3rd, Loong the 5th, Monkey the 9th and Dog the 11th.
6.己Ji ---> 巳Si

I'm loving these videos. I don't have the patience or skill to play these games, but I love the lore. So thank you for making these videos so much.
Waiting for Chapter 6 to be explained. The ending video was moving. Interesting to see your take on this. Patiently waiting.
Kang Jin isn't dead btw. After the Cutscene you can still see her alive behind you. I assume she was taken back by her other Mansions and Converted to Buddhism as that is a running theme for deities in the journey of the west
Ginseng guais are a well known in Chinese mythology, not from JTTW. Once they reach 1000 years of age ginsengs can become guais. The old ginseng guai should be at least 10,000 years old. Extremely potent ginseng, once eaten can grant immortality.
Let’s goo this is about to be a banger!

I was already subscribed due to your explanations of Zelda bosses but Afro had me watching your newer stuff so here I am!

This was awesome. Thank you for all your hard work. This is an amazing story omg.
I think that kung jin was convinced to join with force just like yellow brow tried to do with us: the mf trapped her in there making her go crazy thinking that since yellow brow is stronger than the second strongest being in chinese mithology, the true way is the strongest way, literally bending her will
Every video from this series made me realize that a I don't really understand a lot of things that happen in the game. Thank you for making my playthrough more enjoyable by explaining the back story.
I'm leaving a like before watching because I fell asleep during part 2 and had to rewatch to actually see the video. Bandit my dear man, your voice is too soothing for a mind tired from a long day at work. Watching this one before work today.
Nice video, very accurate explanations
But your guess about the Ginseng Guais coming from Wukong is propably wrong.
17:37 My mental image was just banditgames with a big old smile on his face after saying that lol

Afrosenju fast traveled me here, bro your explanation is awesome!
Finally we got to the more human final bosses that get to use the relics unlike the first two which have the more animalistic characteristics that can’t use the relics
What?
Your mom is an animal
Not sure about Yellowbrow but they’re all yaoguai, being human had nothing to do with their ability to use the relic
I think its about power level and their origins.
the explanation is so well done
keep up the good work my guy
