  • The Boston Celtics coasted through the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 120-95. However, Jayson Tatum finished with 18 points, off 7-of-19 shooting (0-for-5 from 3). Colin Cowherd reacts to the Celtics win, then explains why Tatum's quiet night is not necessarily the best sign if they move on and face tougher opponents. After eliminating the LA Clippers, the Dallas Mavericks came up short in their 117-95 Game 1 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Luka Dončić finished with 19 points off 6-of-19 shooting and just 1-of-8 from behind the arc. Colin reacts to Luka's early struggles against OKC.

JT isn’t cruising. He’s averaging 10-12 rebounds a game, 8-10 Assists a game. He’s doing amazing on defense, switching on nearly all 5 positions. On offense, he’s drawing double teams and dishing it to a wide open DWhite or Jaylen Brown. He’s doing what he has to do to win. Not be a 40 ppg scorer. That’s not his priority.

that’s not his priority but you’re acting like he’s averaging 20 points on 10 shots. he’s taking shots, he just isn’t making them. props to him for not sitting in the corner and pouting and still finding ways to impact the game. however, despite how talented and deep boston is, he can’t play like this in every game if they make it to the finals. i’m not asking for 40. can i get 27 and 8 at least? cuz that’s his regular season average.

Brunson is a high usage player and their primary scorer on all levels. You can tell each additional game he plays, he is getting more and more gassed. Much like Donovan Mitchell is for the Cavs. Cs have so many layers of scoring that there really no reliance on just Tatum.

Seems like there’s been a lot of disrespectful discourse on Tatum bc he shot poorly (7-19, 18pts), but his rebounding, his assists, hockey assists, blocks, and playmaking rn is on a different level rn.
For those that think that of Tatum, just understand that there’s more than just scoring the ball to impact your team to win. I’d rather have Tatum average a cool 22/11/4 and win by 20+ than to have him average 30+ (on probably bad efficiency) and lose in dramatic fashion.

PG was the best player in OkC but he deferred to Russ. He has been best player on the clippers for his entire time playing there cuz whether yall want to believe it or not Kwai has not been healthy or close to his regular self in LA but he deferred to Harden and Kwai and I think that’s y he is so inconsistent is cuz he plays so passively that when he does play aggressive he is forcing instead of letting things happen naturally.

Tatum has more playoff points (2,363) than, Giannis, Embid, Dame, Joker, Luka. The hate is crazy, dude averaged 30 last year and they said he doesn't make his team mates better, now he's making his team better and they want him to score more. He also plays both sides of the ball.

It's not usage rate. It's the fact that he had to play 38+ minutes and even averaged 40 minutes in a month during the regular season just to keep the team afloat. The mileage just caught up to him and he got injured in the Clippers series. But now he has no time to rest and heal. Having 4 days off is nothing when you have a knee sprain and have inflammation. That takes weeks or even a month to properly heal back to 100%. It's just a shame we don't get the usual beast Luka we're so used to seeing in the Playoffs. I hope the Mavs can figure things out while Luka is hobbled up, but it will be tough. Clippers are a much older team and when their 3s weren't falling, they fell apart, but the Thunder are the youngest team in the league and can shoot 3s at a good efficiency. It's going to be tough for the Mavs. We'll have to wait and see.

Ant, Jokic, Brunson and Tatum have played more minutes this season than Luka. Usage rate is definitely why he's gassed and breaking down. When your offense is so heavily tailored to revolving around 1 player, it's going to wear on that 1 player. Ant and Tatum look completely fine right now despite their minutes because of how their teams are structured and getting others involved.

Who cares WHO the bleep is scoring, as long somebody is, and with Boston's depth in their starting 5, not to mention the deepest bench in the NBA, how often do you really think that the ENTIRE team is going to go stone cold?!? Hmm?
I love the respect he's giving JT though, because I think he truly deserves it. He's also right about MVP awards - they're basically worthless, and for JT? I'm sure he'd MUCH rather have a Finals MVP, than a 'lowly' league MVP...ANY DAY!
On the usage issue? With Boston it isn't an issue whatsoever, it's a given. Why? Because they're ALL geniuses at governing the guy's minutes - from the docs, to the trainers, to the coaches, and all the way down to the water boy...!

This is a very dumb argument, Tatum has always been a very selfish player and he has been criticize for that a lot over the years; yet, like anything in life, he is maturing and is realizing that for him to win a championship, he has to depend on others. Brown is as good as Tatum and White is developing into a Superstar in front of our eyes, and I think he is finally realizing that for the Celtics to win a championship, he has to take a step back and allow others to shine because when you are a soldier of one, you will end up like Donovin Mitchel, tired and resting for a whole quarter....Brown last year, went through the same ordeal and Tatum is doing that this year...they realize that as a team no one can beat them, but once they start Iso hunting, the whole team falls....

There are 4 guys on the Celtics roster that are more of a leader than Tatum, none of them are Porzingis, another career shrinker (and injury prone).
