The Newsroom Environmentalist Toby Predicts Apocalypse
Вставка

- I saw this on The Newsroom last night and I thought it was some of the funniest shit ever.
The Newsroom's Will McAvoy interviews an environmental scientist and they discuss the EPA's most recent findings.
"That would have been great."
Gets me ever time.
Josef Ferguson humans can't breath underwater lol
"Are you gonna get in trouble for saying this publicly?"
"Who cares?"
Said like a man who has truly seen the coming of the inevitable end.
Best part is, most of this is true. Some of the predictions are a bit played up, but we really were in straits this dire 4 years ago when you made this comment. Then we had four years of the Trump administration rolling back a lot of environmental protections in the name of profit. It's only gotten worse since then.
Sleep tight! :D
It's also the deadpan, matter-of-fact delivery too. A guy who's simply calm, beyond hysteria, just laying down the facts, with zen-like acceptance. I went back and watched some of the Office because of this scene. Great writing, great acting.
@@lidla2008 To be fair there isn't a lot Trump could have done to make it worse OR better.
China is the worst polluter today accounting for over half the global total yearly emissions.
As an Englishman i kind of think my country should stop giving a sh't as we're one of the lowest carbon emitting 1st world countries per person with our programs but i think now what's the point when countries like America, Canada & China literally produce 3 times the carbon output per person and aren't slowing down.
Until those gas dumps of nations get their act together it really doesn't matter how much effort we put in so what's the f'cking point anymore.
@@HereticDuo buying time is even if not a solution, better than nothing. It's an extreme long shot but we never know if some smart cookie will invent a miracle tech to fix what we broke. At the very least, the world can hold out going to hell until I'm too old to care, and since I don't plan on having kids, I don't have to worry about it.
@@HereticDuo from many perspectives, it simply isn't true that only the actions of the US, China and Canada matter. The majority of solutions to the problem will have to be technological and systematic requiring research and production development. Any country can develop the industrial processes to produce complex organic chemicals for example. These will be required for things like fertilizer and whoever gets it first makes a fortune selling the process to everyone. Global supply lines have all kinds of problems where the real issues is a lack of basic research to prove the green processes are workable.
Looking more short term, a period of great power competition is coming, which will shake global systems and make inefficient countries pawns in the global game. It is in every country's interest to become self sufficient and promotion stability. Eco friendly systems do this by default as they are usually lower impact, distributed and redundant. Again, whoever develops the technologies first gets to save the planet and make a fortune regardless of actual size.

Well look at you with your extra credit.

The best part of this clip was Toby after Will thanked him for being there:
"Thanks for having me!"
Yep, and 7 years later, its even funnier in a very sad, sad way.
How is it sad? They predicted Florida would be underwater 5 years ago. Climatology is a cult. They will predict Climapocalypse every 4 years for the next 100
@@fenrisulven5324 They're already subject subject to tidal flooding and the state has spent billions to help. Billions! And that's not even addressing tidal surges. So, you telling me that all that water in the streets of Miami is usual??? If you think so, you don't know anything about engineering practices. Engineers would never design drainage systems, roads and bridges as they did in the past that allowed for such usual occurrences. You're in serious denial. But that's ok... Nature doesn't reward stupid.
@@fenrisulven5324 "They" did not. But we are absolutely seeing the very effects that have been warned about. Just ask the people of Kentucky, Texas, California, or Hawaii if things are better or worse. And it will only trend towards one direction.

I posted this because I thought it was funny, but the comments...
Why is it the people with the least to say can't seem to shut the fuck up?
I believe in (even part of ) this story, because I saw this ' China, U.S. agree to limit greenhouse gases ' goo.gl/qrZ5P8
For decades , China AND USA have not given a s--t about this subject; now they do this ? Maybe it's critical (catastrophic) NOW.
Circle Yuan If only Al Gore was president. That would have been about 10-25 years ago lol
Sketchy Fella Why did you think it was funny?
+Sketchy Fella You're upset because you wanted people to agree with you. You're also upset because you're not a climate scientist. DR. Westbrook (not Mr.) has done his homework for 10 years. He's got advanced degrees in Chemistry and Biology, and has mountains of data from climate scientists all over the world. He's right. Our window was 20 years ago, we blew it, and now -- it would be like trying to turn a supertanker in a sea of syrup. It's hopeless, and there isn't a 'position' on this. You *can* take a position on gravity, but it won't change gravity.
Also, before you say it, *yes*, Dr. Westbrook is a character on "The Newsroom," but he represents the consensus of thousands of climate scientists worldwide.
+Sketchy Fella Google "Global Warming's Terrifying New Math." (Rolling Stone, 2012).

"Thanks for having me!"
I think this is hilarious. From the scenario to the Newsrooms reactions. So understated and well played. It had to be funny, the truths are scary. Thanks for the upload.
Man did this clip and the comments not age gracefully.
I’m here today during the week where the Air quality in NY was 340- hazardous bc of the wildfires going on in Canada and I can tell you that even for me ( someone who has no respiratory illnesses or allergies for that matter) the air is unbearable.
Thanks for having me!
The subtlety. The humor. This gets me every time.
I love it, "Who Cares"
Its 2022 he's right on target
I think this is in the top 10 clips from the Newsroom - really well acted too. 👍

Toby from the Office brings more joy to the world.
That might've been one of the best things I've watched. The only thing missing from this is a mic drop lol. Hell, It's not like he was lying.
I fucking love it when an actor from one shows plays the exact same character in another show.
Couldn't have picked a better person to do this

I have been laughing at this for 2 days now! Thank you soooooooooo much for posting this!

A fictional show, but a sadly realistic message.
The “message” is more fictional than the show...

I was afraid to share because it is NOT funny! Kudos to crew and HBO! Sad that only exposure the apocalypse gets is on a TV show... My god save us all!
That look he gives the camera at 2:19 when he’s told to stretch 40 lol!
For those that think this is anywhere near real, please pass them a glass of Jim Jones' special Kool aid.
This is an almost perfect replication of a conversation that happened 2 years earlier on pbs
"Who cares.."
That's the best part ....
Here's one way to think about..................
150 years ago in 1867 there were less than 5,000 combustion engines in operation on a daily basis across the planet. In 2016 there were more than 100,000,000.
And this is just a guesstimate (but we can probably all agree that this is an accurate statement {to some degree})...........................
The human population of the planet consumes 500,000,000 gallons of oil a WEEK EVERY WEEK OF THE YEAR.
All the personal cars, all the city and regional buses, all of the local diesel trains, all of the regional and nationwide diesel trains, all the airplanes (including those that just deliver packages and only have a crew of less than 4).....................
This scene seems to be happening nowadays like the wildfire in the western hemisphere.
So.. The only thing thats left in toby's list is the blacken skies... 🤔😨😰😱
Australia, the smoke was enough to blacken the sky
favorite clip from a good show
Honestly, toby is right. 7 years on and the wildfires and storms have been insane while the mass migration towards Europe and America has been uncontrollable.
Although much of the migration right now is from people fleeing violence (be it war or gangs) and not as much environmental. Just wait til that kicks into full gear. You think people are angry towards refugees now. Once food is on the line...ooof. i still have hope that we can mitigate some of this, but there's no way we're dodging the entire mess.
Two years since this comment and the situation has only worsened. The End is near.
the funniest clip on the show ,bar none!
Humans were born on earth, we we never ment to die here

...and Toby's last words will be, "....And I never made it work in Costa Rica...."
In one of the worst case sea level rise scenarios of 80 Meters(240'), we would be able to view an inlet of the Pacific from our place. We're now 10 miles from the sea as the crow flys and at 550' elevation.
2021 and still here Toby. Suck on this rock.
I choose to believe this is roughly speaking true and
I choose to believe that we cannot know (for certain) how the story will end... and
I choose to believe in love not fear... i choose to start to love more: you, me, every One.
This is the beginning of the end of something... and
the beginning of the birth of something...
We are not bystanders, we are part of the story and part of what (watt) happens next.
omg! still such a Toby😂

Lol Toby always kills everyones trip
I don't see the humour. You all do realise those numbers aren't fictional, right?
Our great-grandkids are screwed, might as well laugh about it.
Someone will figure a way out of it. Machines have in fact already been invented that are capable of condensing CO2 in the atmosphere into materials that can be converted into fuel. Aside from that, I hoping for my bio-dome.
You realise that those are B.S. right? That there is no way to have enough of them to make a difference. Even if you could, burning the fuels will put the carbon straight back into the atmosphere. The politicians have not been willing to do what is necessary up till now. What makes you think that will change any time soon?
SarthorS you didn't listen to the clip, the house is already burned to the ground.
@Marcus - I don't get my information about the world from fictional programs on TV. Unfortunately, that is where most people get their ideas about many things including science, medicine, history, economics... the list goes on.
To make it clear, I accept the current scientific consensus on anthropomorphic climate change, and I do share Dandy's opinion that solutions will be found. However, I am also of the opinion that the solutions will only be for those with money and power. I think we are already well past the point for a significant percentage of the human race to not be drastically affected and I am worried about the now unavoidable social upheavals that we have in store. The immigrant crisis that Europe is experiencing is just the beginning.
and in the end to me it doesn't matter if the climate change scare is real or not, we should still be heavy into solar, wind, nuclear etc power. if nothing else it stops us from funding some of the worst regimes in the world

DAMIT TOBBY
I'm pretty much convinced that at this stage, while we should increase efforts to "go green" and limit our CO2 output as much as possible, our best hope is going to come from some future technology that we haven't thought of yet. Either that or we'll just have to learn to adapt.
The thing is, the Earth has warmed and cooled before. It's happening quickly this time because of us (humans). Skeptics say it was going to happen no matter what and that it's not our fault but even if that turned out to be the case, the planet doesn't care about us. It won't fix itself for our sake. If we go extinct, the Earth will go on happily without us. So we need to do what we do best and that's be selfish. Forget the planet. Don't find a solution for the sake of saving the planet, find a solution for the sake of saving us.
+jedsithor ok so all the science aside it boils down to this
yes its happening naturally Humanity however is speeding up the process by something like 0.0005% or something really tiny that does not seem like much but when you consider these natural cycles last for 100,000s of years to us as a species with our tiny 80 year life spans it has a notable effect
what people are trying to do is not reverse the effects but bring it down to Neutral levels (as if we were not here) so it would happen any way
the earth has survived worse its going to be nowhere near what this guy is predicting and apart from that you have other variables such as in 2030 solar activity is basically going to be non existent for about a decade
last time this happened the worlds temperatures plummeted by 60% and it even snowed in places like Melbourne Australia regularly
people just don't like change and they don't like the fact that things will happen naturally even destructive things and we cant do anything to change it
You just stated nothing that would support your statement factually. Site a source that humans are speeding up the process by 0.0005%. Speeding up is very sensible topic. Would the warming happen anyway if human element was not here? Solar activity is going to be lower* (not "basically non existent") in 2030, what is the certainty of this? Does temperature follow solar activity only? Destructive things can and will happen naturally, but what is the present situation (you only mention what can happen, not what's currently happening)?
this is so laughably hysterical hollywood alarmist nonsense
jim ewok this was a real study. Nothing in this is misinformation. We have literally sentenced the planet to die.
God dammit Toby
Entertainment without information. There's no CO2 in the air around here, just CO3
Don's face at 3:23.
bahaha ''.... who cares....''
If this guy believed what he's saying, why is he living out the last days of disco in a middle management job at a government agency? He would be building a cabin in British Columbia.
It's like he said, "who cares?". And in reality, he's right because there's nowhere to really be safe from any of this. We aren't even going to see the worst effects of all of this, but children being born now are going to be turbofucked in their future. A log cabin in the remote BC wilderness doesn't help when the forest starts burning down around you.
