Les told me as a musician to, "know your audience."
I grew up a half an hour away from his hometown. Met him once at Milwaukee's Solid Gold McDonald's where he autographed a picture for me. Attended a concert of his later in his life. Was the first person through the doors at the grand opening of the Les Paul House of Sound at Discovery World at Milwaukee's lakefront, to include a tv news interview. Got a dvd made of him and I playing guitar together (green screen) and later sadly attended his wake there where I was handed the memorial card by his son Rusty. Paying my respects, on my way out, placed a pick in the flower vase at the foot of his casket and did the same at his grave in March 2020 in Waukesha.

A business client of mine, same age as Les, grew up next door to him. They were close friends. He said Lester was a brilliant guy. And,, he had double Ph.D's from a very exclusive university. I didn't know this history until, over lunch one day, he asked what guitar I played. I said, the best guitar made a Les Paul. Well, that's what opened the gates. Great interview. One of the best of Les ever. Best advice ever at the end. GOD willing, the hard work never ends. God blessed Lester Polsfuss.

Les comes off a lot different here than I have seen him in the past...he can be somewhat of a braggart (rightfully so) and a little abrasive...but here he's just so kind and patient. What a life. THIS is a person that a Martin Scorsese should make a movie about!

I have the "Chasing Sound" DVD. It's over 10 yrs old & I still play it, along with my "Cnester & Lester" & Les Paul & Mary Ford compilation CDs, frequently.
I've met Greg Koch a few times (a friend's brother played drums for him in the Tone Controls) and we talked about meeting Les at the Iridium after a Tone Controls show in NE Wisconsin. If you've ever watched any of Greg's videos, you know there was never a dull moment in that conversation!

Hi Shawn.... Les was going to give me a guitar for the museum before he got sick. Afterwards we got together once again when we did this interview but I didn’t get back to N.Y to go to his home and get the items he wanted to
donate before he passed. Not long after Les died they had a auction in L.A of everything he had... everything!!!!! Being our museum is in Nashville and Chet Atkins was a friend of mine I wanted and bought the white Les Paul Les played with Chet on the Grammy winning Chester and Lester album along with his early gold records etc. Not the Les Paul guitar on the album cover but the one he played on the record. He was truly a friend.I met Les a few times but not enough to call him a friend but enough to know he was a great guy and very funny but so was Chet, just a different sense of humor.Chet was very dry. Joe - I really like the way you know how to shut up and let the person you interview speak. Les Paul has many interesting things to say, and that is what I expect to hear.
Way too many "reporters" are in love with their own voices, and it becomes really annoying.

Met Les at the club in Mah Wah during his show. At intermission he came around to every table to say hello. The biggest thrill you cannot imagine in 1978!

I've been fortunate to meet Les Paul. I worked at a truck stop near his home and Les would come in to get a coffee and sandwich to go. We chatted now and then when I would wait on him.
I good him that I remember watching him and Mary Ford perform on tv when I was a kid and always enjoyed them.
He was a very nice man and it was a day day when I heard that he had died. He was extraordinary.
This is so beautiful. My parents met as jazz musicians in Kansas City
in the 1930's, so I grew up hearing some Les Paul music. I love his

One of my greatest regrets is not seeing the great Les Paul at the Iridium. But I do have an original '57 Les Paul Special and a '76 Les Paul Standard. Hey now!

Great interview! I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is truly an amazing man. He's not only extremely articulate but he's got a mind and a memory like a steel trap. He remembers everything and can verbalize it. Master musician. Master electrical engineer. If you could have drawn out the interview for another two hours I would have been right there.

As an old electrical engineer and frustrated guitar picker (aren't we all?), I have so many questions I would have loved to pose to him. I would also have asked about his mother's influence on him. She seemed like an extremely perceptive woman with uncanny intuition.

As a teenager, I worked all summer and bought a Les Paul w/o knowing what it was and who he was. I bought what I considered the most beautiful and best feeling guitar I had ever held. That was 40 years ago and I am still a Les Paul guy. The guitar and the man.
Just "wow". Probably the best thing I've watched on UA-cam. I hope future generations can appreciate this.

This is great. I remember asking a guy when I was 14 in '72 "What is Martin Barre playing on the cover of 'Benefit' ?" Oh, that's a Les Paul. Fan of both the man and guitar.
Quote I recall was that I read back in the 80s (GP Log ?). he set up a guitar on a stand at the foot of his bed as a kid so it would be the last thing he saw before going to sleep and the first thing he saw when he was awake. Worked :)
After all the great players, I grateful Les put the stamp of approval for Epi's. '07 Std Plus bought new and Lp Jr in tob just del'd less than a month ago. Great and love the Les Paul Model silk screen on the headstock.

Great video!!! Les was such a genuine person. I had the privilege to meet him at the Irridium, got him to sign my Chasing Sound video case. I had a conversation with Rusty that night, too. Great memory!
If you want to know more about Les Paul look up lespaulfromstarttofinish on facebook. There is a friend of Les, Jim Wysocki, that has a bunch of very valuable Les Paul-owned guitars and other meaningful objects. He has a program that he puts on. At the end of the program I was at, they let attendees handle (and PLAY) the artifacts. I was astounded to have one of Les Paul's own Les Paul Recording guitars in my hand. Plugged in and played it (truthfully, it did not play well, having decades-old strings on it)nowhere near as well as Les, but knowing it was in Les Paul's hands and then mine was a big thrill for me! Jim is a terrific guy and gave away items, too. He had a bunch of signed contracts from gigs that Les did, that were given away. I have an Alnico magnet from a stash of materials Les kept for winding pickups. Really cool experience!

I'll never forget the first time seeing Les at Iridium, it was so much smaller than a place I expected a giant to fit in. We stayed after the show and I told him my hero was Powell Crosley the radio inventor and we talked geek stuff until his driver was ready. I saw him the following winter and he yelled HEY Crosley! I almost fainted. I found if you showed respect and interest in the "old school" folks they loved ya, and I think that's your key Joe, they can smell sincerity, it's so rare.

I too, really like the way you didn't interrupt him. A lot of people interviewing are so annoying when they don't know when to stfu, they end up ruining the whole interview. I really felt for you when you told your story about your arm.
Hi Peej m..... yes it was hard keeping the camera still (kinda still) for that long but I wasn’t going to stop Les from talking. Yes... Man I know what you mean about interrupting your interviewees... drives me nuts when someone is in the middle of a story I’m really enjoying and the interviewer cuts in and ruins the story. Often they never finish what they were saying and go on to something else leaving you hanging on what happened!!! Thanks for watching and your very kind comments... Best, Joe

Listening to this prompts me to recreate a record playing invention I created 53 years ago when I was 14.

15:09: Les mentions Malone NY. This is not the first time Malone, NY is centric to Les Paul's life. Orville H. Gibson (1856-1918) - Gibson is buried at Morningside Cemetery in Malone, New York.

Thanks David... there’s a cool story behind that... my friend GARRY TALLENT who plays bass guitar with the E St. band called Les on my behalf when I was first starting to put the MusiciansHallOfFame together around 2004. I had met Les about 10 years earlier. I went to New York for the very first time strictly just to meet Les Paul because I had a dream he died. Well I’m a dumb ass…… A friend of mine said Les is not dead so I was also afraid of flying for some reason at that time so my buddy said well let’s take the train up so we did and that was my first trip to New York City came up in the Grand Central Station and the first person I met my hotel lobby was BB King. If you ever went to see Les he use to play every Monday night at Fat Tuesdays and then he ended up down at the iridium in Time Square. Les would talk to anyone & sign pick guards unlike a lot of famous guitarist, he was just nice to everyone not just me. So after I talk to him on the phone thanks to GARRY he said he be happy to meet with me and help me on an exhibit for him at the museum. He invited me to come to his house after he was honored by the Grammys one year but he got sick and did not attend and almost died. Jeff Beck went to the Grammys to help with his award since Les could not be there. Well Les got better and started playing at the iridium once again so one Christmas night I had taken my family back to New York like we started doing every Christmas and I put a little cheap video camera in my coat pocket just in case Les might have been playing on Christmas night. There was hardly anyone on the streets of New York that night snow-covered sidewalks etc. but I went downstairs to the club and sure enough Les’s son Rusty was getting ready to record a video the show like he did every single time Les played anywhere. I asked him if he would see if Les had time to do an interview with me before the show. Les said come on back and I walked into a teeny little green room backstage and Les was eating a club sandwich and a beer and his table was a Roland guitar amplifier which I thought was extremely appropriate:) I hope this adds a little more fun to the story for you... best... To Joe Chambers and the entire staff - what you have assembled (MHOF) is so vitally important to the history of music, it's impossible to put into words. It needed to be done, and you are the ones to have accomplished it. And for that, the world should be grateful. (I know I am). I'm probably about the same age, so I also grew up embracing this music which has influenced me in different ways. When I was young I didn't have enough money to buy many albums, but I'd thumb through the racks at the local record store hours on end, and make mental note of the musicians who were given credit on the album liner notes. (45s were different, all we could learn was the song writers, which I also admired and always made note of). So for many years I have been aware of Joe Osborne, Pig, Larry Knechtel (LOVED his stuff, as a budding pianist), and you know the rest, no need to try to name them all. To hear them now, those still with us as you began this project, recount the tales in their own words, is priceless. If I were able to travel, I'd surely spend time at the MHOF. If I were wealthy, I'd surely donate handsomely to your cause. As it is, I may just add a codicil to my will. Saying 'thank you' just doesn't seem to be enough.
