No one ever shows and explains the tiny nuances and movement's and why and what they are doing. You just did. 20+ years as a contractor and i think i can finally fill a patch better now because i now understand what look for and how to move. Load, Feather, Fill. Got it. Best drywall instruction video EVER.
Today it was downward pass from the top of the doorframe. Id just clean off the corner and qo a quick sand of the rest....not really a big deal but if you had a bunch that 3 mins a door adds up. Besides...why give yourself more work?
I have to say, I’m learning all this in my retirement. And I thank you for explaining so CLEARLY!! I have to make friends with my trowels. I learned a bit from a painter who exclusively used hawk and knives.
I'm not a very good handyman at all but I love watching your videos and I love watching how you're human that even professionals can make mistakes and how you show how to get rid of that mistake
I have my own construction company that me and my wife run and I have been doing it for about 20 years but just in the last year I have started finishing my sheetrock and I have learned a ton of things about finishing from you thank you so much for teaching others how to finish.please keep making videos . And GOD BLESS YOU
Haven't lately heard you say "it's not about how you put it on, it's about how you take it off." That has always been a good lesson that stuck in my mind.
I have been in the same house from when it was built 23 years ago. I knew the drywall and paint work wasn’t great, but when I started trying to get it ready to repaint, I have spent weeks part time just trying to get nail/screw pops and cracks fixed, mud frame out of plumb walls, and ty to float out peaked drywall joints. I had two inside corners that when I fixed numerous nail and screw pops in them actually split the paper tape in two different areas a foot and a half to 2 feet long and left a gap, needing filled and the walls needing filled as much as 5/16” on each side to get them somewhat level. I sure wish you were available in my area. I would hire you in an instant to do the rest of our home. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge in an enjoyable manner!
Duno if ill ever put the tips to use lol..I just like watching other skilled tradesmen doing good work. Im in the auto repair industry myself, I refinish every vehicle that comes thru the shop. But Im a new homeowner now, so I guess ya never know,. Maybe one day Ill find myself doin some major drywall work in my own place. I'd certainly take a stab at it before hiring a professional. Ive done a few smaller "california patch" repairs as you call them.. and lots of holes maybe the size of a toonie since the 2 months owning. All came out pretty good i must say. I dont notice them at all throughout the house, so your vids are definitely helping people! Keep at it man, and cheers from CBS, Newfoundland!
Been watching your videos for some time and have not commented so here goes. Your videos have helped me drywall and mud an entire basement room and now my master bathroom. In my opinion, your tips and tricks you provide and share are the best on youtube. Keep it up and thank you!
Magic! Good magic. :) Nice explanations. Greetings from Roumania! Good job! I do this job at my home as a DYI for my drywalls and i find a lot of tips and tricks and all the details we should be aware of to do a great job. I work as a bartender and bowling technician in a 4 stars Complex... Between my shifts i work at home... Right now sanding one of my rooms, first coat on other and second coat in the kitchen. I'm not perfect but working my hand to improve and thank's to your videos i like the results. Thank You! ❤
As a DIYer for my own home I have learned a lot from you. We have some home renovation projects coming up where one is covering an out of date entertainment center and replacing it with a kitchen pantry. The other project is fixing vaulted ceiling. I bought a hawk because of watching your other videos.
Great hock and trowel work!😎👍👍 Been a few years since I've used them but life has made me pull them into action😂 Thanks for the reminder/tutorial🙏🙏 Luv it!!
Thanks a lot man, I'm building my house myself with drywall and steel, your videos are helping me so much, keep going and God bless you, by the way, thanks for sharing with no selfishness, greetings from Peru!!
Really enjoying your videos as I have a remodel going on at my son's house and a project of my own. These videos have helped me to improve my mudding skills
is it the same method when doing the overhead in the door way frame as the vertical side you just did? Load, Feather, Fill. Pass one and two. Love your work. Most workmen work on their own or in small groups and once something works they never change. You are bringing new insights to every body, including the clients. Now the client can appreciate good work and thank the tradesman as they pay the bill. The client can also respond to the bad tradesman. Great work for the industry.
redoing my kitchen. knocked down anon load bearing wall. removed the 7 ft drop ceiling, raised the ceiling, recessed lights and wiring. Now waiting on the county to see if I did the work right=pulling a permit. So I can't mud the sheet rock. will definitely use your tips when it comes time to mud! subscribing now also!
It's Okay.... It's the first coat 🤣. That is also my favorite thing to say. Thank you for the videos. They have helped me out in times of doubt. Keep making them
How does he do it? I'm talking about the black t-shirt and not a speck of mud!......Your patience and explanations are fantastic! One of my favorite channels
I don’t know if it’s another video, but what does finished and paint ready corner look like? Should the metal be exposed? Trying to finish up a closet and debating if I need to completely cover the corners or just paint over them
Get at least a light coat of the metal. Metal doesn’t absorb paint, but mud does and you’ll be able to see a difference when you paint over a transition instead of just painting over the mud. If you’re having trouble covering the metal corners, spray a little Kilz before painting and it’ll help blend the paint coverage
Video request please, on the first door frame, you showed how to do the wall side, can you explain how best to do the wood side. Thanks so much for these video's, I am learning so much! Cheers
Can you list what products you use on each coat. Is this correct: quick set for 1st coat, then 2nd coat is all purpose mud then finishing mud last? Do you have to use finishing mud or can the last coat be the all purpose? Thank you for the help.
My work uses pure normal knives 12 for 2 coat and 10 for first coat and follow it’s perimeter however I got a lot of grearful tips just on how to work mud even I that I consider a really good taper can learn from an other artist truly genius feathering the inside corners to not spill I’ll certainly not run spilling my other side lol
When a vertical and a horizontal corner bead meet, what did you do to that corner? If was hard to tell from the video, but it looks like you put a piece of tape there? Love your videos, keep up the good work!!!
Your trowel has a “heel” and a “toe”. Knuckles up when applying whenever possible. Apply with upward strokes because gravity is your friend… same with taking off your hawk.
I can't use the trowel because I haven't practiced as you said. But it's fun to have pigeons with a Taco Bell diet defecating on your uncovered floor 😂

I've been a painter for well over 15 years...I still pick up a nuance trick almost every video. Cheers!
That is awesome!

@@iainstewart371 Same, thanks for posting !!
It’s strange, watching this man do work makes me feel accomplished.
I have to say, I’m learning all this in my retirement. And I thank you for explaining so CLEARLY!! I have to make friends with my trowels. I learned a bit from a painter who exclusively used hawk and knives.
My drywall skills have improved by leaps and bounds thanks to you Ben. Keep the videos coming. (I still hate drywall, but not as much as I use to)
.d

You know someone is very good at what they do when they make it look so easy and simple to do you are a true master at sheetrock my friend
Appreciate all the instructions & nuances you go into. Definitely learning a lot from these videos.
Thank you for all your videos! I’m learning carpentry and have really appreciated learning from your videos along with others. Cheers from Ontario!

Thanks for the tips. Out of everything that I have done on finishing my basement, mudding has been the most time consuming.
one of the best shown. Now I see the use of trowel and hawk.
I used to dread drywall and tape & texture. Now, thanks to guys like you, it is no longer unpleasant and intimidating. Thank You !

Really appreciate you recapping a few basics….somehow missed those details on your earlier ones. Thanks!
I love watching this guy work. But what I learnt from this video, is that this is one job Ill be hiring someone else to do
Awesome training videos for my green plasterers
Glad to help
Yes im still watching to the end lol. Great work like your technique 👏
I’m just impressed that you wear
Black shirts! 😂😂😂

Super helpful videos!!! You remind me of Michael Carbonaro.
Thank you so much for making these videos i own a house and these videos have been a super big help. Thanks man!
Excellent! Your explanation and demonstration work well together.
Bro your a great teacher
Cheers from Montreal
Ben, thanks and godspeed to you and family!
You and the Honest Carpenter should do a collab in Zoom or Streamyard, 2 of the most humble DIYers in the YT world
Oh that would be super fun to watch. I enjoy that guy too. They truly hone their skills!
So happy to find a new video. I was like "where the heck is VC?" LOL. Haven't even watched the video yet . . . excited much?
I like the vids very informative and helpful I also am in drywalling a year and a half already. looking forward to seeing more .🇨🇦
It looks so easy when you doing it 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for tutorial video
Great video…I just stated filling corner beads now in my basement and your tips will definitely help. Feathering still feels very unnatural tho
It is amazing follow your instructions
My challenge is to know the products to utilize to perform the job. I love your channel.
Seriously if I could hit the like button more than once I would
I always feather my edge and the Like Button.
Your a legend mate. From Australia
How does he do it? I'm talking about the black t-shirt and not a speck of mud!......Your patience and explanations are fantastic! One of my favorite channels
EPIC HELP....I have been trying to master this thanks
so the metal edges, is mud supposed to go on there or only paint?
I am always learning from your video, thank you very much!
Everytime he says feather that like button I actually do it what a nonchalant and cool way to get more likes.
I think that first doorway was corner bead up over a wood frame... seems unusual. Would love to see how that ultimately gets finished & trimmed.
That’s what I thought too! I originally thought maybe they shimmed the rough opening with plywood, but then saw the door was already in 🤔
What goes on the other half of the corner in the door frame?
you have the ideal size to make the tops of the door it avoids going up and down a scaffold or stepladder
I don’t know if it’s another video, but what does finished and paint ready corner look like? Should the metal be exposed? Trying to finish up a closet and debating if I need to completely cover the corners or just paint over them

Thanks for sharing your tips and videos, Question, do you need to add any mesh tape on top of metal or plastic corner bead.
Video request please, on the first door frame, you showed how to do the wall side, can you explain how best to do the wood side. Thanks so much for these video's, I am learning so much! Cheers
Thoughts on taping corner bead first?
How do you install the metal corners? Nailed/screwed or punch tool preferred?
Nailed or stapled with a 1/4" crown stapler.
Yes learned something. Thank you.
Good job I have nothing to do with dry wall but very interesting.
Engenious. Brilliant. Thank You.
Can you list what products you use on each coat. Is this correct: quick set for 1st coat, then 2nd coat is all purpose mud then finishing mud last? Do you have to use finishing mud or can the last coat be the all purpose? Thank you for the help.
Why don't you use tape on the flange of the bead? Wouldn't the semi-sharp edge make it easier to create a crack at the end of the bead?
Any easy ways to clean out 5 gallon bucket that you use to Mike fast setting mud?
My work uses pure normal knives 12 for 2 coat and 10 for first coat and follow it’s perimeter however I got a lot of grearful tips just on how to work mud even I that I consider a really good taper can learn from an other artist truly genius feathering the inside corners to not spill I’ll certainly not run spilling my other side lol
In the end, last or second coat of mud, well you see the steel corner?
The first door has the metal corner bead going onto wood in the jamb area, what's going to happen to finish this?
I haven’t seen that old clinch on bead used for 40 years
nice job buddy...
ain't you supposed to use multi finish ?
Another great video. TY
Do you think that a trowel is easier on the wrist than a knife? Just curious because like you I also skate and have terrible wrists these days!
Ever a reason to use quick set with mesh tape on metal corner bead?
Yup. If you want it to be super strong. I've done it lot's of times.
@@vancouvercarpenter what is your favourite brand of quick set?
I use the plastic corner bead with glue and staples. Is steel better?
Do you have a preference between steel vs vinyl corner bead?
Love the channel!
thanks
When I finally do my garage, my brain is going to be such a drywall snob--- criticizing myself for all the mistakes I will be making.
I don't remember if you've done a video on sheetrocking arches but I'd love to see one. Thanks!
When a vertical and a horizontal corner bead meet, what did you do to that corner? If was hard to tell from the video, but it looks like you put a piece of tape there? Love your videos, keep up the good work!!!
Bob Ross builder 👍
Just curious, are they Addias Rome shoes?
Aren’t you supposed to do half circles around the corners ? Like you did the second opening on the left
On your finish pass...are you flat with your trowell?
Hey Ben have you ever done a video on joining plaster/lath and drywall?
Commenting for your benefit, and anyone looking for how to 😁
Your the man bro
How do you cover uncovered metal thin line at last?
"It's okay. It's the first coat." should be a shirt
Thank you for the vid not into plaster and lath 👍⁉️
Your trowel has a “heel” and a “toe”. Knuckles up when applying whenever possible. Apply with upward strokes because gravity is your friend… same with taking off your hawk.
How do i replicate dry wall pattern. When i mud its a smooth surface and extremely noticeable after painting. I know that walls are never smooth. 🙏
Very helpful, thanks!
U don’t put mesh tape on corner bead?
I can't use the trowel because I haven't practiced as you said. But it's fun to have pigeons with a Taco Bell diet defecating on your uncovered floor 😂
I know you don't want to throw anyone under the bus, but what the hell is up with that door handle being so offset from the deadbolt?
Bending that edge; bend it like Ben! :-) Bend that like button! You got it ;-)
God, I hate corner beads 😂 you make me feel less annoyed about it, though 😂
Been looking legit with that beard.
Is it typical in Canada to have such a huge backset on the door handle?
