I’m a 13 year old girl, my mom passed when I was 9 and she was hispanic. I always felt like I was going to intrude on a culture that isn’t exactly mine so I have never made and ofrenda. But recently my dad has remarried and I felt like I wanted to be closer or at least recognize my mom in a way so I’m going to make her an altar in my room.

I’m not Mexican. I’m Asian but my partner is Mexican. He lost his mom 2 years ago and this year we want to honor her in our home. Thanks to the movie coco, I learned so much about this beautiful tradition. Thank you for also putting out this video. This gave me the inspiration I needed and I will ensure I properly honor every element of the ofrenda for his mom. 🙏🏻

I’m Mexican but from Texas, so we didn’t celebrate most Mexican traditions as we should’ve growing up.. thanks for educating, I plan to celebrate from this year on & pass the traditions on to my kids 🧡

its never too late. I'm 23 and my family just started making ofrendas after years of living in Texas because a lot of our family passed away this past year.

Also Mexican from Texas. This is such a common story for Tejanos. Our families faced a lot of identity struggles that we can never fully understand. Don't feel alone in this. Our family practiced some traditions, and lost others. But the great thing is, we are in a time where we can be proud of and honor our traditions. Now is the time to learn from one another and reconnect with our old ways.
Thinking about doing a community ofrenda for Dia de muertos in my hometown. Make it a neighborhood thing.

      Annette Rivera, you are correct!
All around the world, the "time of the dead" is observed from 31st Oct (All Hallows Eve) till Nov 2nd (All Souls Day), with Nov 1st being All Saints day.
While many cultures have their unique names & ways of celebrating, this seems to be a worldwide observance.. especially in the parts of the world where it was introduced by the Catholic church from the 11th century.
P.S. Even my Venezuelan grandparents celebrated with graveside offerings. My parents no longer observe it, but each culture has their unique way of observing.

Unfortunately, I can't find cempasúchil in the UK, so I will have to make them with orange tissue paper. I also made a pan de muerto las year and it was delicious! Last night as I watched this, the stories you shared about your grandpa made me smile and it made me long for my grandpa. When I went to bed I dreamt that I made an ofrenda (which i have never made by the way 😄) and in my dream he came back. I could see his face and even his eyes so clearly (which is very rare in dreams.) It’s the first time i’ve ever dreamt of him since he passed 4 years ago. I’m Cuban and we celebrate El Dia de Los Fieles Difuntos from November 1-2. Más común para nosotros vamos al cementerio los cuales en esta fecha tienen extended open hours and ponemos flores y nos sentamos a hablar con nuestros muerticos. A los niños les decimos ahí descansaban los que de cierta forma an contribuido a que nacieras. We light tons of candles and tomamos cafecitos y ron y después de las 12 marchamos a casa. ♥️ un beso.

My PawPaw also had a secret love affair with candy haha. Bittersweet story, when he passed away we were all in the ER room standing around him. When it was time to leave, we went to move the pants he wore when he was rushed in. When we picked them up, a handful of peanut m&ms and a pack of cigarettes fell out of his pockets, both of which he was hiding from my grandma. We all laughed and then cried harder. I have a daughter now who is 20 months old and have decided that we will be making an ofrenda this year. We want to teach her about different cultures and I think this would be a beautiful way to start that off ❤

I have a question do I need to make 7 levels or can I make 2 or 3.
And what level does our loved ones picture go on, and what is the level made of like a table and then like a big cardboard box or a box to put stuff on the Ofrenda

You forgot the papel picado wich symbolizes the wind also it is said when the pole picado moves it’s because the spirit of the dead person is there so it is very important when making a ofrenda

Thanks for this! Many dead relatives these past few years. I wanted to do this, but it's a little late in the game being it's the second I also want to do a little more research to get it right. I will definitely be doing it next year! Thanks!

Ancestor worship is such a beautiful thing. It's a shame Americans got away from it.

The marigolds, I just search on Facebook Marketplace for “cempasuchil” and you’ll find farmers that sell it. And pan de muerto you can find at most Mexican grocery stores!

we never celebrated day of the dead even though i'm biracial and since my mother passed away we decided that she would have loved this tradition. she was white but adored day of the dead decorations and hispanic culture. we didn't know where to start and i'm so happy to say that we are going to!! thank you so much for giving us this to go off of!

I actually made it myself! I cut the flowers stem off, bought the beads at Michaels and strung it together with thread! 🧡✨
