you're right. I was on a public bus a while back and pretty much everyone was cheering on two kids just booting it for the bus stop in order to make it onto the bus. They were about a half block away from the stop and they didn't hesitate once. I mean, the bus driver was gonna wait for that level of commitment anyways regardless, but he couldn't exactly slow down for them.
But, yeah, didn't think of that memory until you mentioned it and it fits perfectly. It's sort of a "we're gonna be exhausted at the end of this" almost amateurish give it your all kind of sprint. The video didn't really focus alot on this sort of analysis which means it was just a 'hot take'...i mean, do they style his hair specifically to give both an enhancement to the running AND to look kind of immature/amateur look? We understand as the video said that he does this style to look cool, ofc, but the video didn't spend the time that sort of concept deserved.
kind of a waste really. A clip of Cruise mentioning the old actors was just teased and not followed up with a focus on this sort of commitment by the actor...it all just seemed haphazard and clunky and just flukes if they touched on a point lightly

As a former D1 Sprinter I can tell you that Tom Cruise without a doubt has the best sprinting form in Hollywood. Quick turnover, full leg extension (no drag), complete and powerful arm action, chest up, head relaxed, minimal side-to-side movement, all resulting in a decently quick speed which look just fantastic on screen.
Except he is exhausted at the end of it. Also Short screen takes so he isn't a runner.
If you watch the running more carefully you will see he doesn't run straight, his form is off, he doesn't lift his foot up high, his hands go to high, my 7yr daughter runs better but she has had training.
He is short so he should be more perfect in his movements because Short people have better movement awareness and yet I'm 6ft and can see he has no learned training experience. Daniel Craig runs like a man who runs everyday at least. Like a real Agent, or FBI etc. Tom cruise always does close ups and bicep close ups but he is short so his muscle is more compact. if he actually did the training that Daniel Craig did he'd be Huge and buff. Even at his age.
@@lesliegrayson1722 The fact that he's exhausted is not really important. Every sprinter is exhausted after a race. Also, Tom's form is definitely better than Craig. Daniel Craig has a shitload of leg drag which tells me hes probably a distance runner. He doesnt get his knees up, and doesnt drive as hard. He probably runs more that cruise, but his sprint form is certainly not better.

I mean, that's probably not far from the truth in the sense that he's considerably more athletically fit than most of his co-stars. Like if you have two guys running side by side and one is only going at 50% and the other is at 80, it really shows, so if you're trying to make look like they're on equal footing...
To me, what makes Tom's run so memorable is how he fully commits to it even if the form makes him look silly. The dedication makes him look like he's ready to run though a cement wall if need be.
I think the form is cool tbh, it's a perfect running form and he looks badass doing it. Nothing silly at all.
Mm, as an only child more interested in speed & flow, more than what's popular, I'm stoked to watch this clip; He seems fast when he runs and I identify with it. I'm stoked he seems more self-aware, in interviews, so I'm far less reluctant to watch & enjoy his work, which I feel has been consistently worth it. ✌🏼
As a former track runner, his form is perfect for racing. I still run like this on the treadmill 20 years later because that form was engrained in us. I’m sure it looks silly in the gym too lol. I can tell he had professional training.

While I’m not a fan of him off screen I can’t help but respect him on screen. His work ethic is incredible and his on screen presence reflects that. You can tell he’s committed to his craft.
Same. He won me over by allowing himself to be killed repeatedly and brutally in Edge of Tomorrow, which was a hoot. Once I got over my hater ways, it was easy to appreciate him. He puts so much into his craft, of himself, elevates/pushes fellow actors. Tremendous. I really hated orig Top Gun ( being full Cruise hater at that point ) but Mav had me won over. Great fun.
When your craft is playing the same character no matter what movie you are in you have to be dedicated.

I ran track in college, and at 43, can't run as fast as Cruise does now. Just getting the body moving that fluidly at this age takes a lot of dedication!
I drank beer and studied engineering in college and I regularly hit this pace (at a sprint, not on average lmao) in the middle of 10Ks no problem running 2-3 times a week

After a long break from running, I got on one of those machines that are powered only by your feet and got up to a little over 14 mph and strained something in my hamstring. I definitely need to take it slowly and work my way up, not a spring chicken anymore.

I watched MI3 and MI1 over the past few days, for the first time in years. My reaction was wtf is his body moving like that for but not actually going that fast 🙈.

Part of the reason I think Tom has stayed heavy on action movies is he still can.
He can come back to drama or other movies with low physical requirements, but once his body says no more action or no more doing your own stunts.
Then he will have to stop.
He’s basically getting all the mileage he can on this part of his craft while he can.
He could also enjoy this type of movie work more then the other forms.

I think his running creates a sense of excitement and anxiety amongst the audience most other stars aren't able to create at this level. And really he runs very fast, damn, at his age, unbelievable!
I've said it for over 15 years now. Tom really is one of the last action stars. He fights, he runs, he performs his own stunts, some of which are ridiculously dangerous and yet he does it year on year and only got more committed once he hit his 50s. I love all his movies and I hope he continues for another 10-15 years.

It's pretty incredible how his career has turned from dramatic, emotional roles with great themes/morals/conflicts, to full on high level action with crazy stakes and impact.
His earlier movies are really good for the mind and the second half of his career are really good for the eyes. It's hard to name any actor comparing this range to this day.
And his commitment to the roles... I can only think of the physicality and mind of Christian Bale, or DD Lewis, whose acting are never in doubt either. They act on a different level.
also, most actors have it flipped, where when they're younger, they're more active and are in more action movies, and when they're older they lose the energy they had when they were younger and so are less active and are thus in more "mind" movies

I was a sprinter too. For years I always slow motion replay all of Tom Cruise's running scenes. I used to wonder how much is natural and how much is coaching. .... Doesn't matter, the result is brilliant, Tom's running style is powerful, smooth and also very dramatic. And Ps, I actually think it's mostly natural. Go Tom Cruise !!
You know who was also a great runner, Jackie Chan. Just look at his run in Police Story 2. There is so much emotion and passion in his run in the final act of the movie. A standout memory from that movie.
Jackie Chan was amazing in every movie he did. Even the bad ones.

My buddy's friend is a track & field coach who has been a runner for decades in track, but also cross country. He saw the MI:3 run, and said: "His running form is basically perfect. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he entered some nationals for fun, and took 1st place."
Was going to comment basically on the same thing. At first, I was wondering if his form was that of a track runner and perhaps that's why. Then, when the video showed a few others, I was like - "It's gotta be!" The upright chest, and the range of motion in his legs compared to others?

I watched Mission Impossible 7 last night. This 61 year old man had multiple running scenes in that movie... and they were all freekin' amazing. He really does look like he's flying he's so fast.

After MI7 Dead Reckoning, Tom Cruize outdid his past running scenes!! One of the best run sequences ever done in cinema history and Cruise at 62 age has got stamina more than an average 20 year old!!!!

It’s true - he’s always running for his life, and makes it look like he’s got that “this could be my last run” look. I think he also makes it look hard - like it’s not a polished tool for his character, but something spontaneous he must do at 110% right now, to save the day.
really didn't expect to be entertained by a video about tom cruise running but here i am commenting 7 mins later because i enjoyed the video 😂 what i like about the way he runs is how frantic and chaotic he looks, I can really feel how high stakes the situation is because he looks like he's desperately trying to get somewhere. a lot of actors nowadays run so gracefully/balletic so the running scenes lose the chaotic feeling

From what I've seen, whatever Cruise commits to, he goes all in. His dance scenes in TROPIC THUNDER (and the following choreography he performed with no less an entertainer than Jennifer Lopez!) impressed me for how much better they are then they need or have a right to be. Cruise is hard core about getting his physical performances correct, and it shows.

Tom has always felt the need, the need for speed. I think he's just a really intense guy, and running is an easy way for him to express and get out his intensity. Almost all the running scenes are frivolous, but they're also memorable and mesmerizing and his trademark by now.
I've been told that Robert Patrick consistently out-ran the dirt bike he was chasing in _Terminator 2_ so had to slow down his sprint, and if you watch him run it looks a lot like these later Cruise runs. Credit to the guy, he was supposedly also trying not to breathe too much (as if an infiltration robot wouldn't pretend to have normal human autonomic reactions?).
I think he also does a great job implementing the run into the stories. Like often it’s in scenes where it makes sense why his character would be running full speed. He’s not running just because people are waiting to see the run. Which speaks to his philosophy as a filmmaker! As much as he clearly loves making bombastic action scenes, he really does care about story and character first and foremost
His role in collateral was so good, he just oozes professionalism in every scene.

In Collateral, I think he should have been nominated for the supporting role, not Jamie Foxx. After all, he was the villain, not the good guy/protagonist. So he would have won the Oscar that year. Very deserving.

He is absolutely incredible in each of his action movies. the amount of time and effort he puts into giving his very best to the audiences totally blows me away. Seriously. The art of acting while running. When Tom runs in some of his films you can feel the desperation, the strain, the focus and how he's DIGGING his feet in the ground with each step. My guy is actually SPRINTING like his life and other's are in his hands.

The fact Tom Cruise isn't even that tall (5'7 or 1,70m), hasn't got sprinters legs either (particularly long legs, small torso, like a barbie doll) and still runs like this is bloody impressive. I am 6'5 and I do have particularly strong legs naturally, I'd probably barely get to his level if I did it professionally with daily training, let alone now, my ego is probably better off not knowing... 😂

I think another, little-considered factor that makes Tom Cruise's run look better is that he's so short. He's light, his body is able to look like it's moving really fast and dynamically, whereas a taller person would have a harder time achieving that same ferociously rapid look, even if they were covering ground more easily with longer strides.

I actually had never seen his movies till a week ago but after watching top gun I was hooked. There’s something about him that captivates and I hope his career continues as long as he possibly can.
I remember years ago watching “The Firm” with my grandmother. She commented how committed Tom Cruise’s character felt because he sprinted across a busy road without looking, but the guy chasing him had to slow down and look. He’s right. It’s storytelling. His character WILL save the day and you believe that
I was waiting for someone to mention The Firm. I noticed his running back then and loved it before it became a thing. I had no idea his running of all things would become so iconic.
As good as the MI movies are I still want to see him in a Jerry McGuire or Magnolia type of roles. It sucks that he is now more popular for his action than his acting, cos I think he is a terrific actor.
His drama roles are so underrated. This man can make me cry so easily. Lol.

He has a bigger range than his many action films would probably tell the average person, especially when it comes to comedies. He was pretty funny in Risky Business and absolutely hilarious in Tropic Thunder. One of his best roles ever though was in Collateral where he was one of the most ruthless, chilling villains I’ve ever seen. He really needs to play the bad guy more often because he can do it just as well as the hero type role.

Collateral and Minority Report are my top favorites- the former for being a masterclass in playing against type and the benefits of Michael Mann putting you through SAS boot camp to get your action beats down, and the latter for being a stinging portrayal of the near-future that only continues to get more relevant as the years wind past
a collab between tom cruise and Christopher Nolan would make the best as they both truly values the art of cinema.
IMO, Nolan's movie characters lacks weight. Like for example Tenet, the lead characters in that is so bland. Tom Cruise wouldn't like that. I would prefer Tom Cruise work with James Cameron. His characters have depth and his movies are as authentic as it can get.

One of the best things is he looks like he's absolutely running, flat out, as fast as he possibly can. And you KNOW, he does that for every take.
I remembered watching MI3 and thought his run was good, almost 'impossible' . Then, he topped it off beautifully with the one he did in Ghost Protocol. Tom Cruise running is a genre on it's own.

He is a weird dude but he is a great actor IMO and he is super dedicated to his craft. I admire his professionalism and his commitment.

You see him in movies, you see him in behind the scenes videos talking to the crew, most recently doing 500 sky dives and 13,000 motorcycle jumps to prepare for ONE stunt in the next MI, does he seem weird when you see him there? Gotta love this resurgence he’s experiencing because despite what you think of his personal life, he really deserves to be recognized for what he brings to cinema. There’s just no one like him and Top Gun really helped remind folks that he’s needed for movies, he’s the last Hollywood heavy weight bringing the golden era of blockbuster movies.
He's the last of his kind. No other action stars come close to the amount of care and authenticity that Tom puts into his product. Truly a reminder of what used to make Hollywood great.
Every studio's over-reliance on CGI has killed the action genre. Certainly hope the age of the stuntman/actor makes a resurgence one day. Because CG won't ever look as authentic as the real thing within my lifetime.
Tom Cruise is actually an athlete in real life. Dude does all kinds of physical training and running is just one of them. I think in one of the interviews he mentioned that he could sprint for a long time without running out of breath. He can even slow his heart beat so he could hold his breath underwater for 5 minutes. He is certainly not your average actor. He goes way beyond that.
It is so popular that like 12-14 years ago, I'd watch Mission Impossible with my mother, she'd always mention "look at him run again!", I always thought it was cool and since then I've tried to replicate running like him, it has become a habit now.

Tom really does look beautiful when he runs. His back is straight as a board, his arms don't swing back and forth across his body, just straight forward and back, his face holds that deep concentration of the need to move as fast as possible and his legs are nearly a blur. And I agree with you, Daniel Craig is just behind him.
🙄 As a former world-class runner I can assure you - Tom Cruise has terrible running form. He's stiff and choppy, and expends a lot of energy, which makes him look like he's running a lot faster than he actually is. That''s why his running shots are always closeups. If you saw a wide angle shot you'd see he's not moving very fast.

When I was in cross country, our coach taught us to keep our arms pumping straight up and down and not letting your arms cross your body. Your legs naturally follow the path of your arms. If your arm crosses your body, your leg will cross your stride, and it will take more energy to correct it. Keeping your arms up saves a lot of energy over a 2 mile course, lets you use more energy for speed. I can still hear him cheering us on in the chute, "Arms up ladies! On your toes! Kick it in! Let's go, let's go!"

I've been runing since I'm 19, I'm now 43 and it's starting getting painful a bit although I can still sprint at a good pace, but seeing Tom Cruise doing this gives me so much inspiration that I'm pretty sure I'll run till I die.
He's got that "bat outta Hell" run that speaks volumes to the danger he's in. Sure he's a cool super agent, but even he's not bulletproof, and he runs like he knows it.
Probably THE most famous movie run, not mentioned here, was Cary Grant in North by Northwest in a blue suit being chased by a crop duster. Another great athlete, he was in his mid 50s when he did that. Perfect form. Gotta hand it to Cruise. He goes all-in in whatever he does and he's an inspiration to "middle aged" guys who are constantly being told by society that they're old and should just sit back and get fat. That's a control mechanism, and Cruise is ruining their narrative. Now, at 60, he's going to be the first actor to walk in space. Hat tip!

I went and saw Maverick in the theatre and was amazed that before the film began there was a segment in which Tom Cruise thanked the audience for choosing to see the movie in a theatre. He is very committed to his profession.
That beginning clip was a bit of a turnoff. Cruise is always assuming we worship him, and that "thank you" came off as just another attention-seeking devise by a total narcissist. The woman I took to see the movie agreed with me wholeheartedly.

Ok when I saw the title I first thought "Pff b.s" but still decided to "hate" watch the first 10 sec of the video. Then I got mesmerized by his run and actually was surprised the video was already over. The run in Fallout was the most intense of any. The emotion and desperation to catch that guy was just so tense along with the humour of the moment, when Simon Pegg was getting his equipment wrong.. Best running scene for me..
well said. I just came back from the red carpet Australian Premiere of MI:7 and yes, he was there. The movie is brilliant. And we all sung him happy birthday in the theatre with Simon Pegg wheeling out a cake. Hes legit.
7 years younger than my dad (still completely insane to think) and I cant even get him to walk 100ft, love my dad, but just goes to show that you can keep yourself in shape if you just keep moving.

I for one love and appreciate what Tom Cruise has given all of us, the average moviegoers. He never takes a shortcut or “cheats” us out of our money. He’s earned everything he has.

Gotta love the guy. For me the run feels like he's actually running for his life and that makes it exciting. Compared to most actors, where it's a case of running because the scene requires it.

To add, I think the running opens up the movie. You get to see more of the world. The directors do a good job at making the world feel natural as they're running through it. You can see yourself witnessing it, which makes you feel apart of it. Cruise will do anything, including hurt himself to make the scene feel more real, and it shines through in long shot scenes like this, 110% commitment by Cruise.
I always liked the Cruise run, my favorite thing about the actor is that he's my height but he gets to do action movies. As a teenager I actually deliberately ran the way TC does, and people were surprised at how fast I was with my little legs. The knife hand thing might look silly, but it feels cool to do.
I'm 5'8 and I had a 6'3 friend who I used to race with couple yrs ago in Hight School. He was always surprised by how fast I was😂
