"Brass Goggles" Lyrics
Music & Lyrics by Christopher Bennett
(Attune your ears to the grinding gears)
Come with me I'll show you how to be a metal man
When the gears are turning and the fires are burning
When the world ticks around you,
voices tocking all the time
And you live for sleep you've never slept
because you cannot sleep
Colonel Walter was shocked
when he learned from the Nile
Copper African elephants turning hostile
So he built these wonderful automaton bloaks
And a very big steam powered giraffe what smokes
Now the war is passed and over
We're left to sit and wonder
What is life and what is real?
And why do living things need feeling?
(One, two, three)
Chorus:
La-Da-Da-Da-Da (x3)
La-Da-Da-Da-Da-Da
La-Da-Da-Da-Da (x2)
La-Da-Da-Da-Da-Da-Da-Da-Da-Da
How'd you like to try pumping
lead through your veins
Or have a heart so wet and cold it starts rusting
When the world ticks around you,
voices tocking all the time
You live for feelings you've never felt
because you cannot feel
And what is this leaking affecting my eye?
Does the oil that is dripping mean this is a cry?
Will I ever be something with feelings to hide?
Or am I just a boiler with nothing inside?
I want all today
Don't want to hear you say
You can't do this, you can't do that
You're not a living thing with feeling
(One, two, three)
(Chorus)
Wind me up, turn the gears (Brass goggles!)
Wind me up, turn the gears (Brass goggles!)
Wind me up, turn the gears (Brass goggles, goggles, goggles!)
Wind me up, turn the gears (Brass googles!)
(Part 1 & 2 together)
Part 1:
I want all today
Don't want to hear you say
I love you, I love you
I love-love-love you
Part 2:
Colonel Walter was shocked when he learned from the Nile
Copper African elephants turning hostile
So he built these wonderful automaton bloaks
And a very big steam powered giraffe what smokes
Wind me up, turn the gears (x4)
(Chorus)
This is the "We gotta go fast and we are angry" version of Brass Goggles
lol yes
Rabbit sounds so violently instense in this one. I don't know whether to be excited or scared.
intense*
Both is good.
ŦuƦpeᴎṯiῃe ērasē mē whØle. True.
Kim Somaly
Fuck off
I can't hit the like button twice
"How'd you like to try pumping lead through your veins?"
Hatch:"Not interested"
xD
ha lol I thought it was Jon
Best parts about this performance:
-Matt's drum solo
-Michael's guitar cam
-Hatchy's comments
-The Spine's vocal range
-Rabbit's last note
I LOVED THIS SO MUCH
+Jess Martin SO TURE
The way Rabbit yells "1 2 3" in this gives me life
+D0ct0rsh3rl0ckSPG same
seriously tho
She must have drank a lot of milk before the show
"How'd you like to try pumping lead through your veins?"
"Not interested." -Hatchwork
It's bloody insane how well these guys and Gal harmonize together. I literally started listening this morning and can not stop. This song in particular. Their voices vibe together so well.
Gal?
@@erikwallace4936 It's a long story with a lot of Canon but Irl Rabbit is transgender and is now Bunny. She hadn't transitioned back when this released. I believe MK III was the first album Bunny appeared on or maybe it was Vice Quadrant. Either way when she transitioned irl they wrote a mechanical transition into her back story. This band goes super deep with lore, it's insanely interesting.
@@Windex21 Of course 😃 SPG is one of my fav bands. I've been following them for years!
6 years later VeNeRiUs, and I caught wind if them a month ago and haven't stopped every day since. This song in particular.
@@JTtheTalkingHead oh the character is still named rabbit, bunny is isabella's (the person who plays rabbit) nickname :3
I'm seriously thinking there's nothing better than hearing Rabbit yell "Give it to me, baby!"
Quickly not baby... but still you're right.
Rabbit's energy in this is so fucking top tier what a queen
That was one of the most aggressive and high energy SPG performances I've ever seen. I feel like I was watching a heavy metal band from the 1800's. It was glorious.
AND RABBIT'S LAUGH AT THE END YASSS EVERYTHING Xx
OBVIOUSLY heavy metal didn't exist back then. It was a joke LOL
Depends on the metal genre
Its La Jolla Playhouse in its prime, the energy there must've been so insane
I thoroughly enjoyed the laugh
Hatchy's voice has somehow acquired the qualities of gruff and melodious at the same time, and I am both incredibly impressed and deeply confused.
The show this video is from (as well as several other recent videos) has the audience to the left and right of the stage. The robots try and "play" to all of the audience, not just straight ahead.
It's not very apparent since you don't get to see much of the audience in these videos. :)
This is the song that made me fall in love with Steam Powered Giraffe...
For me it was this one and Fire Fire ^_^
for me it was honeybee, i seriously thought they were animated
To be honest I never liked these guys because well you can't just have automaton makeup and sing songs based in the 50s (I'm looking at you, I'll rust with you) and call your self steampunk. But some songs they have are steampunk kinda like this one so those ones I listen to.
Being a song artist you have to work with a slight verity for the audiences sake rather then just having a focus on one style of genre. How else do you think musicians and bands get jobs? lol
The cog is dead was completely steampunk and they just got back from tour.
I really just like how Hatchy's voice has that quality of being a combination high and a little raspy. He really stands out from Spine and Rabbit without getting in the way which is quite nice.
I pray for the day there could be an animation based off of these good folks and their phenomenal songs. Whether it's an animated series or a movie or a short! I don't care what kind, there just needs to be one!
Yes! Definitely an animated series!!!
+HetaliaCalifornia Already working on it, not in coalition with them sadly
Well, someone did make a short flash animation with the Japanese version of their intro song.
I'm trying to make an animated GIF (or something similar) of one of the lyrics from Turn Back the Clock.
I agree!!
The yelling of 1, 2, 3 definitely adds to the song
Very nice
1:02 *_I love the way Rabbit screams "1 2 3" here, it gives me goosebumps_*
Rabbit's singing this so violently O-O
yep
+GummyBearNation AdriannaSpadaro that's why this is the best performance of this song
i like the original better but i really enjoy the style of this one too
Original being the studio version or the one from the video? The studio version is very similar to this style of singing.
I meant the video, sorry for the confusion. It's what got me into SPG
At 2:50, we see Michael enjoying himself, but when it gets to 4:36, we see him panicking slightly at breaking a string.... Oops!
Oh my God, that's hilarious. I'm surprised no one noticed that sooner. Good eye!
Bunny has an incredible singing voice, but I love how she can add inflection to it and it sounds ever better.
This is my favorite version of Brass Goggles. The audience add so much energy and the whole band is absolutely blowing the roof off the joint!
I looove how crazy and obsessed Hatchy sounds after the drum solo :>
This song just gets sexier and sexier every time I hear it.
I never ever noticed that Hatch Worth sometimes adds in his own dialogue over the song until now. Now i can't un hear.
Rabbit's near-scream/growl/whatever you wanna call it is platonically so hot ngl.
I love how years later this is still one of the most iconic performances
at 1:01 you could just TELL that bunny could SO do screamo
how dare you, there is no such thing as screamo
@@owen7571-l4j there is?
@@Selin-fu9sh solid portion of the metal community doesn't like calling it screamo. Most prefer hardcore vocals.
@@owen7571-l4j Yes there is lmao
I love the grit Bunny gets in her voice on some parts, and just how it completely disappears on others... it's insane!
Hatch is amazing at dem high notes
+Mormon Jesus FUCKING YES. They need to leverage his voice
Anyone else think they sound angrier here than in the past? Like they're angry about not being "living things"?
o
thanks satan
No problem
YES
I definitely think that they get more into the song in this version. I love their energy in this one
3:36, Hatchworth's vocals gave me goosebumps! I love it!
Woah this performance is way faster and more intense than the other one. But still awesome!
They are evolving.
When I first saw the official video of this song, I figured the part where Spine is going high and low when he's repeating "brass goggles" was done more in the studio. Different takes. Then I see him make those changes live, and all I can think is: Amazing.
Got to say that I love Hatchworks's boots.
+Viktor Suuta They're his Fancy Shoes
+Shadso is he wearing them or are they wearing him
+Usama Mohammad
He also tried wearing them and nothing but them to a suit and tie affair, but they wouldn't let him in.
fair enough
This is spectacular - Sam was a good drummer but he is truly shining as Hatchworth and now we get to see Matt being an AMAZING drummer. It breaks my heart a little in the best way when Hatchy goes into his offline mode in the crouched position like he's still in the vault. And the closeups on Michael Reed bring me more joy than I imagined they ever would. I keep thinking David and Bunny are at the top of their game and then I get delightfully proven wrong.
Will never not love Rabbit's laugh at the end
man! its so easy to just get lost in the characters. so easy to forget these are actual people doing this !. THIS is true art. music that cannot be replaced or even forgotten
Right?? I saw an Instagram picture of David, and he had a CD case squished against his face and I thought it was supposed to be hard? Idk why
This is DEFINITELY my favorite rendition of Brass Goggles
Rabbit sounds so harsh when she said one two three
+Julie Cooper i love it
+Julie Cooper Whenever Rabbit yells like that it makes my throat hurt in sympathy.
1:28 Hatchworth, this is why I love you.
This performance sounds like they chugged like, all the Redbull in the planet right before going on stage.
Who the hell gave these robots energy drinks?!
Can't get this song out of my head- I've memorized the entire first verse and can sing it correctly.... I need a life >.
Bunny's last note tho!
Man, she can belt.
(Get it? Cause she wore like 82632983 belts? Hahaaha I need a life)
No, you have a life. I don't. I always go by my steampunk name My REAL name is quiet hidden as I ONLY go by jak g. Cogsworth. I died. And jak has taken over
Wellll that guy has a life!
lolol
+Janai Stever
AYYYYY
I LITERALLY SEE YOU EVERYWHERE, MAN
Alexiation omg hey!
Oh shoot Michael broke a guitar string haha, I love it!
Please stay together indefinitely. I need this in my life. Just started listening to you a few hours ago
and this is some of the best music I've ever came across in my life.
This version of brass goggles and their song mecto amore are what catapulted me into their music
I just realized after years that Rabbit doesn't say "Antonio hears" but "attune your ears" insteaf, I do not know if I can still trust my hearing organ.
I love hatchy's comments in the back while rabbit is singing lmao. It gets me each time.
This video makes my day, it's so full of energy, they're all on fire! And my god I can't stop drooling over Rabbit..
Just makin sure your aware rabbits a girl
cliff Mcguigan I know, transgender. Im not the only girl droolin over how she used to look u know ;)
MixxyMess I'm still drooling over her, she's so beautiful!
I discovered SPG a few days ago and have maybe been mildly obsessed ever since. It's especially the harmonies for me, so addictive. I'll probably never get a chance to see them live because I'm on a different continent (then again, who really knows?). I'm just happy the internet exists and I get to watch their perfomances like this.
It's 2022 and I relate
Steam Powered Giraffe... The Johnny Depps of music.
damn. even better live.
this is easily the best version of brass goggles i have heard spg do. i absolutely adore it
Oh God, I love these guys so much!
I do miss The Jon, though...
Not to say that Hatchworth isn't SUPER cool
Whew. I squeaked when Rabbit did that first countdown. Dat voice gosh dang.
1:01 holy hell that energy could send power for miles
I love this performance so much, with the harsh vocals and contrasting vocal ranges, it’s just perfect.
How this video doesn't have more views is completely beyond me. At the risk of sounding cliche, this performance is positively electric!
Rabbit.
The only person (Or- Well, Robot) that can make me excited and terrified at the same time.
I can't tell if that's a good thing or-...
Ah screw it it's a good thing, Rabbit is awesome.
Look- He's even got the Spine excited.
That takes some talent.
I've never heard truer words.
This and the walter robotic expo performance of brass goggles will ALWAYS be my favorite versions ❤
this is by far my favorite performance I've seen from them, actually my favorite from ANY band, they are amazing!
One of the few bands that are just as good live as they are in their studio.
I've listened to this song at least 20-30 times and I NEVER REALIZED HATCHWORTH'S COMMENTS this song just elevated to the next level of fabulousness.
0:34 RABBIT I LOVE THAT VOICE
That drum solo doe •w•
This is seriously the best live performance of any band I've ever seen! You all have so much energy and enthusiasm on stage it just makes the show so much more enjoyable. You guys are simply amazing!
Nice drumming, there needs to be more of that in Steam Powered Giraffe.
1:01-1:03, 2:11 -2:12, Hatchworth after the drum solo, 3:52, 4:40, AND THE ENTIRE SONG IN GENERAL ARE ALL REASONS WHY O CANT STOP LISTENING TO THIS SONG
RABBIT'S LAUGH JUST...
HALP
Guy on the far left looks like a robot version of teddy Roosevelt.
Omnomodon YES, just yes!
Suspicious Flaming Pyro Perfect lol
So not Grant Imahara's attempt at making a robotic Jamie Hyneman? Only programmed with Adam Savage's Operating System that's spent too much time playing with an electromagnet?
That should be something they could test on Mythbusters.
Hatchworth for president 2k19
his name is hatchworth you uncultured swine
Rabbit's laugh at the end :O.
Can we talk about the drum solo? I LOVE THIS...ALL OF IT! The art!
Holy hole in a donut! These guys have really cranked it up with this song in their live performance! I remember when I first heard them about two years ago at the San Diego Zoo, and then finding the song from the album. Siiiiiiigh.
I have the stupidest grin on my face right now. This song makes me so happy, and the people (and automatons) behind it are so great.
This vid is definitely my favorite version of this song. (Of course they're all good) but I really enjoy the amount of energy in this plus the drum solo is amazing.
that "WIND me up" by Hatchy at 3:53
3:51
Wow, just wow! This is amazing! I love the way Brass Goggles has evolved in such a short amount of time (the drum solo, Hatchworth's replies, everything!) - and the multiple vocals! Always loved that! One reason why Goggles has been one of my favorite songs! Thanks Spine for posting this!
This is the best performance of Brass Goggles I've ever heard
Seeing you guys live was the best decision I've made this year thus far. I can not wait to see you all again and soon!!!!!
theese guys need to be in a tim burton movie
Can we stop one second to say "Michael Philip Reed, Matt Smith, you both are brilliant ! Bravo !"
Damn, this version got me so pumped that my teeth starting to grind and chatter. xD
started*
Are your teeth imitating the grinding gears?
That laugh that rabbit does at the end is so creepy but awesome! This is a fantastic performance.
Yay branding that makes sense! :3
They certainly wind ME up!
So many things to love about this performance.
The dancing, the energy, the high spirits, the epic drum solo, Hatchy's interjections. and how much FUN everyone seems to be having with this oh-so-catchy tune!
I like the live version more than the recorded version. They seem to have a lot more fun with it!
I have honestly never seen a performance that has grabbed my attention as well as this has.
Even to this day, I still find myself singing "This is the Red Star / Don't sing these lyrics" right at the end 4:13
Brass Goggles was the very first SPG song i ever heard and is still one of my favorites, cant wait to hear whats next
One thing I really like about these guys is that they look like they're just having a lot of fun.
The legs of The Spine are disturbingly long - and the music is disturbingly good!
The energy and hyperness is so contagious!!!!! I love how pepped up you guys are!!! AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys rock!
I love how into the drum solo Michael gets. And I love Michael's little guitar solo towards the end! ^_^ They have so much fun in Brass Goggles.
Probably my favorite version of Brass Goggles... so good!
Amazing performance. The raw energy in Rabbit voice is incredible
This song just keeps getting better every time I hear it!
Yay! Hearing so many different recordings of this song has shown how much you have improved, and I think that this is definitely the best! With Rabbit's voice going all over the place like a robot's should normally be, and Hatchworth and the Spine's little additions, this is amazing, and you guys have evolved so much even from when you were in the zoo!
Why can I not "like" this a dozen more times? This is seriously one of my favorite renditions of this super-catchy song! Everyone looks like they are having so much fun and the sound quality is excellent (nice job, David). A joy to listen to AND watch. :D
this is so violent + powerful i love it
This is probably my favorite rendition that they did of this song, so energetic! THAT DRUM SOLO WAS EPIC.
My favorite rendition is actually one that I have only found twice. It has a female voice doing the "Attune your ears..." part. It's not as high energy as this one, but it holds a very creepy and bizarre vibe, which I LOVE!
Yeah! That ones pretty cool and old-school sounding. Was that Upgrade at the beginning by the way?
Nepeta Leijon
I kind of figured as such, but I didn't want to assume since the band's past prior to "2 cent show" can be a bit murky.
