I feel bad for the kids who get this. I understand that parents don't want to spend a lot because the kid might lose interest quickly, but if you give them trash like this, you're guaranteeing that they'll quit guitar.

I agree. When I was 14 my family put together some money and got me a beautiful acoustic guitar for my birthday. I'm 23 and I still play it. Investing in something of a higher quality can be worth it even when it's for kids. Interests may change later on, but as you said, it's less likely when they have something that works the way its supposed to instead of a weird, constantly out of tune plastic guitar 💀

I had a guitar like this as a first guitar, I sympathise with what you're saying but when you don't have a lot of money it might be better to not spend too much on an instrument as a child and then decide you don't like playing it. Once I decided I liked playing guitar I then got one which was of decent quality.

I swear I've seen one of those picks before. This studio my band used to rehearse at had one that just sat around the bass amp. I thought about swiping it, a few times. I even conducted a test by simply knocking it onto the floor next to the amp to see if anybody moved it by the time I rehearsed there the next time or two. It never got picked up, from what I could tell. It might still be there today.

Same man. Those old $30 acoustics where the high e would break after 3 days and you'd never end up replacing the strings and then when you did vibratos and bends the neck wouldn't even be able to handle the strong being moved on it and it would make a scratchy sound. They were always guaranteed to make you sound alot worse then you really are. They weren't even good enough to make that cool grungy sound where shittiness is okay. Yet sometimes I still think about how fun it was to get your first three rifts down and then you'd go and tell your friends and they'd be proud of you and all that. Good times man.

I started off at 20 years old on a cheapo quarter length acoustic I got when I was 10. The guitar was a piece of junk that screams "first guitar lessons for kids" but I played the shit out of that thing for 2 years straight until I finally bought a better one. I miss those days because it was so raw, and I felt like I was doing what child me always wanted to do but never thought I was good enough. Years later I own 6 great guitars and I've made decent EPs writing my own guitar tracks, but that little acoustic still sits in the attic. If I was as famous as Elvis Presley I'd still keep that guitar; everyone starts somewhere!

Reminds me how Voltaire can't tune his guitar properly for the song Brains! (the one from the Billy & Mandy's halloween special) and the whole song sounds catchy yet _very eerie,_ as the rest of the instruments try to play the same tune than Voltaire's (out of tune) guitar. Voltaire admited he ended liking it.
