Two Orca Ecotypes are Actually Separate Species

  • Orcas are currently classified as a singular, global species, which are further divided into roughly a dozen recognized Ecotypes, which themselves contain certain subgroups within each ecotype.
    A new paper looked at the differences between two ecotypes in the North Pacific; the Transient and Resident ecotypes, and determined that both should be reclassified as their own distinct species of killer whale. Lets talk about it

    Update: as of July, 2024 the Taxonomic Committee rejected the new species proposal. However, they did, for the time being, accept Bigg’s KWs and Resident KWs as separate subspecies.
    So, we now have Orcinus orca orca (the standard KW), Orcinus orca rectipinus (Bigg’s KWs), and Orcinus orca ater (Resident KWs)

    lets goooo! i am excited. i say every justified attempt to seperate species on our planet is helping towards a deeper understanding of our wild counterparts. we might even as a whole truly come to the conclusion, that we are in fact just one of many astonishing species on this planet and every species deserves there spot in the current worldorder and we cannot take it away, because they are equally as important and diverse as our own.

      @@rpd6116 that’s not entirely true. Female ligers (lion/tiger hybrid) are generally fertile and can reproduce. Blue whales and fin whales can produce “flue” whales that, based on genetic analysis, are capable of reproducing with other blue whales at least.
      What defines a “species” is not a black and white definition, because just about every definition has at least one example that doesn’t fit within said definition

      Yes, but YOU said that if two things CAN reproduce together, then they are the same species. I gave you examples that contradicts your statement. Lions and tigers are not the same species, but can produce fertile offspring. Blue whales and fin whales are not the same species, but can produce fertile offspring.
      And regarding the SRKWs and the Bigg’s KWs, nothing stops them from breeding together. They just simply don’t breed with each other. Or, according to the study this video is about, there’s no evidence they’ve been breeding over the last 10,000 years or so

      @orcrist3 4 місяці тому +10

      You can! It's easy to apply this same inquiry process to humans with available evidence. When you do, you find one species characterized by high phenotypic diversity and behavioral plasticity (thanks to recent and rapid global dispersal and population expansion), with relatively low genetic diversity and zero reproductive barriers. If you go to the nearest park and see a few gray squirrels hanging out, you're looking at more genetic diversity between those few rodents of the same species than you can find in the entire global population of Homo sapiens. If you're looking to justify cultural constructs of race, genomics are not a good place for you to find support.
