    Fun Fact: Other games that received their own episodes are:
    Dragon's Lair (similar to Cliff Hanger)
    Pole Position II (a long-awaited sequel)
    Track and Field (the Olympics)
    Star Wars (1983, when Return of the Jedi was released)

      We were surprised and confused to run out and see all the same game, especially as neither of us tested especially good at it. Mr and Mrs Stern of Slern Electronics were there for the shoot.

      I made it my priority not to miss any episode of Starcade which aired on TBS at 5pm. I tried my damnedest to get on but the local arcades didn't endorsed or host any tryouts. I remember Jungle Hunt being one of the games as well as Joust, Star Trek, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Pac Man, Ms. Pac Man. One of my favorite episodes had Pac Land!!!!!

    As a guy who won an arcade cabinet based on two anime movies that being Mystery of Mamo and Castle of Cagliostro have you ever seen any of the Lupin movies? If you haven’t please see them they are a masterpieces. Well Castle of Cagliostro is because it’s done by famous anime artist Hayao Miyazaki. So have you seen any of the Lupin movies?

    What a cool episode, love Lupin III so it's fun to watch his American presence of the 80's
    Giving the players only 50 seconds on a FMV game is kinda dumb haha, less chances to make up points, and on that 30 second finale, "average score"? You had to play perfect there to win.
    To the winner/uploader, do you still have the game?

    • @larkefedifero
      @larkefedifero 2 роки тому

      That was one of those "bonus" scenes, where sometimes the game randomly would have you play the scene, sometimes not...kind of like how they ONLY show Cliff and Jigen scaling down the side of the casino building at the very start of the game. If you mess up on your first try, the scene begins again at the point where the lights light up and they're both running out of the casino.

    I hope whoever wins this thing loves fixing broken machines. Cliffhanger was notorious for breaking down. It was one of those Laser Disc games that were supposed to be the next best thing. If it's working, it is probably worth quite a bit. I'm a 1990's arcade jokey so this was a bit before my time. I find it funny that neither one of these guys are gamers. It looks like they just plucked to random guys off the streets.
    Producer: "Hey Fred, that guy looks like a nerd, grab him!"
    Fred: "Okay, will do! Hey kid, how would you like to be in a game show?"
    Contestant: "Oh gee willikers I would love too!"
    Fred: "Do you play games?"
    Contestant: "I play hiking, outdoors, and the tuba."
    Fred: "That's great! I think we have our new contestant!"
    I don't know anyone's names but there had to be a Fred in there somewhere.

    • @MarcoEsc
      @MarcoEsc  4 роки тому +8

      Yes, the machine broke down and always had issues (failing on a few scenes wound hang the machine). The game sat in my mom's garage for almost 20 years until I sold it in the early 2000s.
      It did bring a pretty penny. Among the very focused laser arcade community, EVERYBODY saw me win this on Starcade. So I put out a call for best offers and sold it to a guy across the country and got $5800, plus he sent a shipper to pick it up and bring it home.
      Also I'd say we were both gamers - there was a 3-tiered audition process, with the third being a full day playing arcade games and recording scores. Andrew and I were both good, but this Cliff Hanger was new and wonky and neither of us had played it much.

      That's pretty cool man, I watched an episode before (first one ever) this one that made me think...random people, not gamers. The one I watched before was with an...I think 8 year old verse a 30 something year old...not cool. Obviously the older guy murdered him.
      At any rate, I'm still a huge gamer that plays everything. As I was saying before, I was a 90's arcade jockey. I hit all the Street Fighter 2 tournaments and I was damn good. I don't play many fighting games anymore (fingers don't move like they used too) but I play everything else. I competed in Halo 3 tourneys for a few years then Rainbow Six Vegas 1+2. My crew is still tied with first place for the best times in the world for Terrorist Hunts (we did it with only two people, me and one of my old clan vs 4). So I do know what it's like in the hot seat with thousands watching you....I loved it.
      What's really sweet and I think you will appreciate, both my fiancee and I are gamers. Our home is a literal gamers paradise. We have a full sized arcade complete with full sized stand up coin-op machines (all 90's cabs, my earliest is a 4-Slot Neo Geo MVS). We have a spare bedroom dedicated to all things retro gaming. Finally, we have two of every console including the enhanced models connected to two 4K UHD screens in our master bedroom. No kids...plenty of disposable income and no damn compromises. This is also why I'm so familiar with those damn Laser Disc cabinets. I had a Space Ace machine that I had to constantly fix. It felt like it was broken more times than it ran.
      Now that I know it was a legitimate competition I can say that what you did was very impressive. Thank you for setting the record straight. Stay safe my friend and keep playing!

      P.S. Congrats also on the "R2-D2" robot and boom box / pendant package. Wondering - during the bonus game, did you ever think, "Hmmm...maybe I should miss a question so I get the Activision carts instead?" Just something that came to mind as I watched the clip! 😝

    • @MarcoEsc
      @MarcoEsc  2 роки тому

      Ha! Thanks. No "how to win at Cliff Hanger" but as the game was the same pattern each time, I could go to the arcade and pull stupid tricks like playing it through on one life blindfolded with my feet. I didn't see it very often in arcades, but a few times I was able to walk up to a group playing, wait my turn, then one shot it. It was fun to have for a few years in high school, then it became bulky to store in my mom's garage for some years, then I sold it for $6K. I'm sure the Starcade Cliff Hanger lives on in someone's collection.
      The articles were arcane BASIC programming tricks on the Commodore 64 that I wrote for COMPUTE! magazine. I think I sent it as a letter to the editor but they made it a column and sent me $75 and I was a published writer.
      Geoff was nice enough but we didn't hang out. Contestants were kept in a green room until our shoot. I was nervous as hell but I'm sure there was some small talk. Between takes he obsessively played Elevator Action.

    • @MarcoEsc
      @MarcoEsc  3 роки тому +3

      They just started the countdown timer when we hit start. There wasn't any editing of the played footage for the show; the game sometimes chose to include an extra scene near the beginning. There is one edit - the first time I played, I forgot to hit start when he said "ready, set, play," so they stopped cameras and let the game reset and we started again.

      @Oldworldman 7 місяців тому

      @@FunnySuitGuy Well, I will be honest with you, as a 10, 11, 12 year old, or in this guy's case, older, we did not know where Cliff Hanger came from. At least I didn't at the time, Cliff (Lupin III) was just as much a hero to us as Dirk the Daring. It was many years later that we all learned, through arcade collecting, that this was Stern's horrible attempt at putting together a cartoon laser disc game to compete with the others that were out there in the market at the time just so they could get a piece of that Cartoon Laser Disc pie. It flopped, but, has always, remained a staple in my heart for me because it was a moment in time. I spent many quarters figuring these games out, and now that I am older, I just own them so I can get a false sense of reality that I came out good spending all that money back in the day. I sold a Cliff Hanger Arcade game for 7K, and it was not even all original! The one I have now is all original, and I have kept it a survivor for many, many years.

    • @MarcoEsc

      It had limited replay value, as it was the exact same pattern every time. Also it didn't register actions made at the wrong time, so if you knew the next move was "hands" you could just repeat tap the button until it registered.
      I could play it through blindfolded, with my feet, etc.
      One of the very few times I saw it in an arcade when it was still new, it had an extra screen on top and a good crowd watching, with the "good" players getting about 2/3 of the way through. I put up my quarters, waited my turn, then calmly finished the game on one life. The regulars were all "WTF?" and for a few minutes I was a 15 year old badass.
