- We recently embarked on our first-ever tour package, traveling through the Galapagos, Amazon, and Ecuador with Exoticca. This journey was unlike any other, as we typically plan our own trips and cruises independently. With Exoticca, we experienced both highs and a few lows that we want to share in this in-depth, unbiased review.
Booking and Flights
Booking the tour was straightforward on Exoticca's website. We opted for direct flights from Orlando, Florida, to Quito, Ecuador, but our Avianca flight was canceled and rebooked with a layover in Bogotá, Colombia. Unfortunately, Exoticca didn’t inform us of the change. We also faced issues with carry-on luggage - a problem we later found was not unique to us. Though Exoticca agreed to reimburse us, it was only confirmed days into the trip.
Arrival in Quito (Day 1)
We arrived in Quito in the evening and were welcomed by an Exoticca representative, who helped us reach our hotel, the Holiday Inn Quito Airport. The hotel, although not our usual choice, turned out to be a pleasant surprise with a top-notch restaurant and excellent accommodations.
Meeting the Group and Exploring Quito (Day 2)
Our journey officially began with a briefing from our Exoticca guide and introductions to the two other couples on our tour. We enjoyed breakfast and lunch at the hotel and then ventured to the Middle of the World Museum, where we could stand in both hemispheres at once. We also visited Casa Agave for a tasting of Miske, a local agave-based drink. These excursions were optional but well worth it.
Off to the Galapagos (Day 3)
Early the next morning, we headed to the airport for our flight to the Galapagos, where Exoticca arranged and handled the logistics, including transit cards and check-in. After landing on San Cristobal, we checked into Katarma, a hotel known for its unique, eco-friendly design. We spent the day exploring Shipwreck Bay, where we encountered friendly sea lions, enjoyed local cuisine, and took in the scenic surroundings.
Snorkeling Adventures and Loberia Beach (Day 4)
The day's highlight was an optional half-day snorkeling tour at Isla Lobos, where we encountered various sea creatures, including playful sea lions and a giant sea turtle. In the afternoon, we continued snorkeling at La Loberia Beach, which offered stunning marine life and breathtaking coastal views.
Highlands & Giant Tortoises (Day 5)
Our next adventure led us to La Galapaguera, a tortoise conservation center, where we saw giant Galapagos tortoises up close. The day continued with a visit to a coffee farm and a challenging hike up El Junco Lagoon, a volcanic crater lake. The weather didn’t cooperate for views, but the experience was memorable.
Santa Cruz Island and Surrounding Tours (Days 6-7)
After a scenic ferry ride to Santa Cruz, we settled into the Albatross Hotel, known for its excellent interior despite an industrial exterior. We explored Santa Cruz’s Highlands on an optional tour, including visits to coffee farms, lava tunnels, and the El Chato Reserve, where we saw more giant tortoises.
Amazon Jungle Lodge and Misahualli Monkey Village (Days 8-10)
Heading into the Ecuadorian Amazon, we stayed at Huasquila Amazon Lodge, where blackouts due to hydroelectric power shortages added an extra layer of adventure. Highlights included a night walk through the jungle, a trip to Misahualli Monkey Village, and a serene paddle canoe tour in Paikawe Lagoon. The local Amupakin community welcomed us with a traditional meal, and we capped off our jungle experience with a refreshing hike to a waterfall and a chocolate-making workshop.
Hot Springs and Final Day in Quito (Days 11-12)
On our return journey to Quito, we relaxed at Papallacta Hot Springs before settling in for our last night at the Holiday Inn. The next day, we caught an early morning flight back to Orlando, reflecting on our unforgettable journey.
Final Thoughts
The tour with Exoticca was a unique and enriching experience. From seamless transport and well-planned excursions to stunning wildlife and comfortable accommodations, we were impressed. The optional tours were well worth the additional cost, and our guides were knowledgeable.
Overall Highlights:
Incredible weather and vibrant wildlife throughout the trip.
Thoughtful logistics with smooth transfers between destinations.
Comfortable accommodations with particularly memorable hotel staff.
Considerations:
Communication with Exoticca could be improved, particularly regarding flight changes and baggage policies.
Some hotels were located in less scenic areas, and a few excursions involved more challenging physical activity.
Despite these minor hiccups, we highly recommend this Exoticca tour for travelers looking to immerse themselves in Ecuador’s natural wonders with a well-structured itinerary. This trip delivered remarkable value and unforgettable memories of the Galapagos, Amazon, and beyond.
