Glad to see you back on Metro/North. Great viewing at that station. The Vermonter 55 has been running very late for quite some time due to severe speed restrictions in Vermont. 10 mph in a big section. Despite this problem the line remains popular with many sellouts and consistently 80-90% capacity.
I had a friend who lived in Mamaroneck many years ago. My other ride on that line was to Bridgeport CT to connect with the ferry to Port Jefferson NY. Great rides. Thanks Tim.👌👌💚
When I was a messenger in NYC, I used to hang out where you were standing and recite the departures on the Solari board. Like 4:45pm train to Brewster North; White Plains first stop, or train to Croton Harmon; Yonkers first stop. And you're right about the Westchester and Boston. They had a terminal at 132nd Street and you had to take a ferry to reach Manhattan, whilst NH trains went straight into GCT. The NH beat them at their own game. I enjoyed the video. Looking forward to the next one.
I really gotta start getting back to railfanning @ Mamaroneck (even if whilst on a lunch break - working in Mamaroneck). I miss it... 😩 Especially liked watching trains from the end of the S/B platform closest to Larchmont, and watching them descend the hill from Larchmont to Mamaroneck. Another fun spot in Mamaroneck, IMO - a bit of a walk though - is the Rockland Ave overpass that crosses over the line at the Marval lead south of Mamaroneck. Nice, clear view if you can aim through the chain link fence (or over it even). The overpasses north of the station can be OK for some vantage points, but the Rockland Avenue one is the best of the road overpasses here, IMO. If I had a spare grand to blow on equipment, I'd like to get one of those cameras with the insane optical zoom. Always wanted to get clear video of trains going through Larchmont station from the comfort of the S/B Mamaroneck platform. 😂
Once whilst watching trains here, I tried to get the engineer of a push-pull to honk his horn, which ... he did, but then I impulsively tried to get the conductors in the rear cab car to honk their horn too... they did, midway through the station, LOUD and LONG... people actually jumped, I wouldn't be surprised if some soiled their pants. Good times, good times. 😂
very nice! earlier this year, I did some train watching at the Rye Station. In that region the Amtraks were running faster as the speed limit was higher. Always great to see the variety in rolling stock.
Retired railroad guy I was just letting you know just in case there's a possible chance you didn't know one of your favorite locomotives is coming to the tracks wearing the newest Metra Heritage paint Scheme honoring the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Regional Transportation authority the engine is Sd70mach
Awesome video! Glad to see you got some action during the best time to be out there at. I love seeing the P32's running on the New Haven Line for either deadheads or the Danbury Branch. Seems really cool on a mostly electric line. I don't know why people say you don't get out to Metro North much. You seem to get out there quite a bit. Especially coming all the way out from Long Island.
what time did the set with 210 pass? on weekdays a deadhead from Stamford yard to grand central passes through mamaroneck around 4:50 but it can come earlier. labeled X1083
Since you've got a good majority of LIRR which I don't mind. Has all three tracks from Hicksville to Floral Park opened? I'm waiting for GCT MADISON to start.
Retired railroad guy I'm quite sure you heard of the new locomotives coming to Metro in Chicago and about the light show Canadian Train That's heading to Maine
Retired railroad guy I was just saying if you didn't know they have your favorite engines about to hit the tracks the locomotive will wear newest Metra heritage paint scheme honoring the 50th anniversary of the formation of the original transportation authority
Tim, I thought the M8s could run multuple amps/hz settings on the legacy Penn Central (NH) catenary infrastructure. As such, are they not able to use the catenary on Hells Gate/NYCR all the way into Penn Station? You only covered this briefely in this video, but I'm curious how Metro North is going to come into Penn in 2024-2026 via Hells Gate if the M8s have an issue with thr current. Thanks for your insight on this! -SR
M8's were only built with 60hz transformers. 25hz capable transformers are much heavier and would have made the M8's too heavy, so it was decided to extend the 3rd rail beyond the 25hz/60hz frequency change just before the Hell Gate Bridge.
Thanks Matt! Just curious, is the phase break/change on the west or east sides of the bridge? Also, does that mean that Amtrak's equipment (ACS64, Acela) have the larger transformers for both phases? Great info here - thank you again! -SR
@@SteveRoberts5330 West side of bridge. I knew there was a reason for them being prohibited there on AC. Seems the M8’s aren’t as diversified as I thought they were
I was a visiting railfan from Massachusetts on Wednesday the 12th, riding MNR New Haven through this spot and in this part of the afternoon. Can you clarify whether you did this video on the 12th or the 13th? Thank you. (In the first minute of your voiceover you say "October 13th" but you title says "10/12/22")
@@3985uprr Ah, thank you, this is what I hoped to hear. At about 16:00 in your video you have an Easter egg for me! I was on board the eastbound express overtaking the local, which you captured. I had been on the lookout for that while riding, but missed it.
Nice to see everything {other than a Danbury train that should have dual mode locomotives} was feeding off of the electrification. Unlike the LIRR, with dual mode locomotives running in the diesel mode alongside third rail. In my opinion, that's outrageous. I've heard the excuses, but it should not be happening. What a waste. Those LIRR dual mode units should use every inch of third rail. It's all under the MTA umbrella. The problems with the dual modes or the engineers need to be addressed. And if Amtrak's Vermonter has a diesel {I couldn't tell}, it should have an electric locomotive. Amtrak needs to invest in some dual mode equipment.
Just curious because I am not familiar with the New Haven lines operation...is there a reason why they run the express trains on the 'wrong rail' ? Is that a normal routine with them ? Looks like you had an enjoyable day...be well and thanks for view, Vincent Zablocki

Great rail fanning location
My favorite part was when the train entered the station

About 430
They are planning to add Metro North service via Hell Gate into Penn Station. Will MN equipment be compatible? Amtrak obviously is.
I have a question, what app or website do you use if trains approach and bypass the stations?
I pretty much use the MTA train time app. I am one that likes to use a lot of extrapolation to figure out what trains are and where they are.

Those C cars look odd where they're placed. I'm surprised they didn't make triplets out of the m8s like they did the m4s.

8:09 Hopefully they have a solution if they wish to make New Haven to Penn service a reality
They can use the overrunning 3rd rail to go in
The Acela loses so much time on the new haven line. I believe they can only go 70 or 80 max on the entire line from what I’ve read.
It’s an impediment to high-speed New York Boston service
If I recall correctly, the highest MAS **used to be** 90 between ... Larchmont and Harrison? (and it was reduced to 80).
Yes it used to be faster with the Acela reaching 100MPH. I wonder why the speed limit was reduced
Paparonek!😂
Just seeing if my viewers are alert!!!
A bit off subject here......HOW ABOUT THEM PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES!!
8:10 I believe they can’t run on the old PRR 25Hz system
A NewCanaan eastbound through train running on track 3 would have to cross three tracks to enter its branch. Sounds pretty disruptive.
Track 3 shouldn’t require that much of a move. Tracks 3/1 are westbound tracks on NH Line

I think the only dual mode locomotive Amtrak has is the GE P32AC-DM. Both electric (third rail) and diesel
