the m8 and p32 dual modes are owned 50/50 by cdot and mta which probably explains why the m8s have ct dot logos on one car and mta on the other and the add on cars and 50/50 with half having mta logos and the others ct dot logos
These trains are primarily commuter trains. You would have seen many more riders in the opposite direction as it seemed to be late afternoon when you traveled. It is a welcome service for those of us who travel often between NYC and the CT shoreline. Thanks for this great report.
Thank you!!! I was hoping someone would correct that pronunciation! I did my best to research the correct way to say it, but I couldn't find a definitive answer, so I just picked what I thought it would sound like, and hoped that someone from the area would catch on and correct me.
M8s are split 2 to 1 between CDOT ownership and MTA ownership. with the exception of the pure third rail EMU fleet (formerly the M1A and M3A, today the M7A and the future M9A) for the Hudson and Harlem lines all "East of Hudson" Metro-North rolling stock is split. Four of the railroad's P32AC-DM dual modes are CDOT owned and wear a heritage New Haven paint scheme. the BL20GH are more evenly split and the CDOT ones wear the CT rail colors created when the Hartford Line was launched.
Agreed. The close proximity of major population centers, all connected seamlessly via public transport is the closest to Europe one can get in America.
That was a fun video! Did a conductor never come to check your ticket? Wonder if they forgot they had the doors unlocked to that last car. But I would recommend closing the cab door next time, especially if you wanted to sit in the jump seat in front of the window, just to prevent train crew members from getting the wrong idea of you in the cab.
Strangely enough, the conductor never came by to check my ticket. I was considering closing the door, but I wasn't sure if it would lock us out of the jump seat area, hence why I didn't try.
Good looking trains. I didn't even know this line existed, much less had existed since the 90's! Just goes to show how I little I know about the Northeast once you get past New York
They should really upgrade the NEC between NY and NH. The corridor is windy and has speed limits change every minute. Or they should build an new line like the NAHSR.
Who is "they"? AMTRAK (i.e. you and I, the taxpayers) own the track between NYC and Boston. It is the old New Haven Railroad that follows the shore and the coast line. It is curvy with a couple of straightaways where trains can go 100mph. Want to upgrade the line? You put up the first $100 billion and see who follows your generosity.
@@cats0182 If I had the $100 billion to give to such a project, I would, and I'm sure many others would too. $66 billion has already been set aside from the 2022 infrastructure bill to upgrade passenger rail in the US, and there's no doubt a fairly large portion will go towards the Northeast Corridor.
Ok, big spender. You put up the first billion dollars in cash and then challenge the already-overtaxed NY Metropolitan Area residents to follow your example.
Many of these stations on commuter lines are surprisingly attractive. Is that front seat available when the cab is in use, or is it shut off for security reasons?
The best place to ride or shoot video is big curve on Niantic Bay. I grew up riding the NHand later the Penn Central. The tracks were awful in thise days and train cars were falling apart.
"Click bait". Cab views says to me a video from the Front of the train, not the rear. An emp;ty train says to me that taxpayers are willing to foot the full bill for the cost. If they're foolish enough to do that, so be it.
Since the river in New London is named after the river in London, England, I assume it should be pronounced the same way -- i.e. Tems, not Thames. I'll let a Connecticut resident correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm glad you enjoyed! I'll be honest, the bathroom clip is from an entirely different journey lol. I didn't actually go check out the bathroom on this particular ride, because I was worried that the conductor would tell me to leave the rear coach if they saw me moving between cars. That or at least close the cab door, which would have meant the end of our fun.
The MU in EMU means multiple unit. In other words, because the cars are permanently hooked in an emu or set of 2, they're technically 2 EMUs. If they were as independently single sets then it would be a 4 car train. Also by saying 2 M8 EMUs, he's saying 4 cars anyway. It's like 2 pairs of socks is technically 4 socks.
@@jasonjohnson892 Yes and no. Single-car M8s do exist. 2 M8 EMUs is not necessarily equal to 4 cars. Also, married pairs are a common thing, as are four cars coupled together in A-B-B-A formation (e.g. most trains in the NYC subway), but that doesn't mean they are counted collectively. Generally people will say a train has a four-car or eight-car consist, not "two EMUs" that happen to each consist of two to four cars.
@@LonestarTrips yup, I would like you do do a video of the hilariously short ride between New Haven union station and New Haven state street, nice video
I believe CT Rail is actually operated by Amtrak, though the cars are indeed owned jointly by the MTA and CTDOT
Interesting. Looks like the Shore Line East is Amtrak operated, but the Hartford line isn't. Definitely a strange setup.
@@LonestarTrips I believe the SLE M-8s are exclusively CDOT owned
@@kolkoreh Correct! Some that run on MNRR are owned by the MTA.

This one's a marriage of weird contracts. AMTRAK conductors/engineers/crew, MTA rolling stock, CT Rail line.

Thats metro north railroad replaceitem as shore line east?
Love the New Haven station design
Agreed. It's beautiful.
The train was probably not full because if you were traveling in the afternoon, the commute is the other way.
That's likely the case. I'm not familiar with the area, so I don't know the usual commuter patterns on the line.
Honestly it's never crowded, maybe the 4:40pm weekdays.
The "Illini" is pronounced Ill-eye-nye. Plural possessive of Illinois

Amtrak's "Value Fare" for NHV to NH-State St is only $0.50.
I saw that. And if I stack the student discount on top of that, it ends up costing just $0.43.
That’s hilarious cause nobody does that lol
I was there because I miss my stop to Madison 7:33
The cars used on the SLE trains have had their third rail shoes removed, making them operable only with overhead wire for now
Love the review on the new CT Rail rolling stock!
I'm so glad you enjoyed! And thanks so much for stopping by the premiere!
Decent looking train on the outside, but the red and cream colour scheme on the inside is a bit like a '90s McDonald's.
The Shoreline M8s are getting CTrail logos.
I hope they give them proper liveries, like the Hartford line cars/locomotives, and not just logos. (Although I doubt they ever will.)
@@LonestarTrips No, there just getting CTrail logos for now.
now caltrain electrified and due to delays and technical issues its gonna look like this soon if it keeps losing passengers!

the north eastern corridor is the most european by the feeling of it all.
Agreed. The close proximity of major population centers, all connected seamlessly via public transport is the closest to Europe one can get in America.
Everything about the northeast USA feels more like Europe, than the rest of USA. Very different culturally from the western USA.
It’s the only decent service in the USA
Sorry I missed the premiere,
nice catch w/the 2 Acelas btw!😃
It's all good, glad you could be here regardless!
Sadly they cut service on the shore line east!!!!!! It’s harder to use now
1:12 - You can see the steeple of the church that recently collapsed in the back ground.
Wait a minute. Metro north M8s dont serve new london. CT rail does! Not Metro north!
Its a gem of a ride for sure. A unique view of our coastline

Why does the train say metro north
Many of these stations on commuter lines are surprisingly attractive. Is that front seat available when the cab is in use, or is it shut off for security reasons?
The door is shut perpendicular to the car, so no, the seat is not available.

It is footage from the literal cab of the train. It is by definition a cab view.
So the afternoon into New Haven is the reverse commute
I’m fairly certain the 2 minute ride is free on any CT rail train
It probably is, but paying a single dollar for an Amtrak ride is funnier.
Only free on Shore Line East. Not on Hartford Line or Metro North.
When was this made? During the covid surge?
It was filmed July 1st, 2022.
