Mr. Risinger is nothing short of a class act, great entertainer, skilled craftsman and an entrepreneur to look up to and someone I would be honored to have a beer with. Thanks for this insightful interview!
The public thinks all homebuilders are millionaires, 50% of the consumers think we are crooks "some are", trade guys feel we are a check cashing machines and honestly the banks love because we turn over assets so quick assuming that we finish on time but at the end of the day we are no different than any other person who should be in love with what we do... I am a BUILD show fanatic and Matt is my digital mentor as well as others. Thanks for your transparency and your guidance we appreciate your love for the craft and your business acumen!!!
I can relate. In 2008 I paid a customer 22k to finish the lower level on a 265k home I sold them for 235. A person can only take so much of that. God bless the lucky ones who keep falling into piles of money every time they turn around. It just never was that way for me.
When the ppl you work for are asking you to give something up in return for a raise, then you're not really getting a raise are you? It's an abusive relationship that reflects how they value you.
@@D2O2 how old are you? Are you a millennial by any chance that thinks the world owes them something. Imagine you were self employed and had one guy working for you, would you give him a raise everytime he asked?
@Ryan Keating How about just being properly compensated for the work performed? Your comment belies the assumption that workers are to be abused or otherwise don't deserve respect or dignity. @D clearly points out that employers who do not meet their staff's expectations for fair wages are falling behind. In this case, who ever employed Matt, lost an amazing employee and is worse off for it: ua-cam.com/users/MattRisinger . I would never treat my employees as Matt was subjected to. Furthermore, the world does owe @D something. Many things, in fact. Not the least of which are dignity, respect, fair wages, fair housing and many more things. Anyone who deprives another of those things may not meet the arm of the law, but invites the deprivation of the same.
Even in Canada the minimum vacation is 2 weeks or 4% of pay. So for your previous employer to be offering you only 3% to give up a vacation was not a pay increase but decrease.
What a great video. It is a complete mystery to me as to why builders build. Risk reward yikes. Not to mention I would have ulcers at best. I have heard many similar stories over the years. I suppose we are lucky some see it as an avocation I cannot imagine another reason for this career choice.
Why ? For times like these -spec house in places like austin are selling for like 30% over asking and builders are making more than 20% profit on houses > $1,500,000, …I’m sure Matt will concede hes doing very well now.
@@johnwhite2576 Just imagine what realtors and bankers are making without buying or picking up a tool. With zero risk as they will be bailed out if things do not go well. Not to say these people don’t work hard but I bet they don’t lose as much sleep as the contractor
If you want good working conditions and good holidays move to the UK. You Americans are not being treated well. In the UK you get a minimum of 4 weeks leave plus bank holidays thats another 7 days I think. When I retired my holidays were 5 weeks plus bank holidays.😎😎😎😎
Love Matt. Seems like a great guy and very generous with his knowledge but hes got to take the word builder out of his mouth. Hes a project coordinator. Takes too much credit for the work that other people actually do. This brings an heir of counterfeit to his brand. I think thats why his channel hasn't reached its potential. People want to watch creators do actual work.
When you reach certain threshold, you better drop the tool pouch and get down to biz: generating sales, managing subs, PR, accounting and all that sxxt. It's a GC's main job description. And in a way it sucks but it's the way it is. Let alone that he's got a channel to run and bring extra dough.
@@khavafis I agree with your statement. However it does not address the argument (complaining) that I present. Matt's not a builder, have you ever seen him build anything with his own hands? Matt's not a craftsman but he takes an unearned share of credit for the craftsman he employees (just read some of the comments in this thread stating how Matt is a craftsman). Nothing wrong with being a coordinator. We obviously need those. I'm actually trying to help Matt bring a greater sense of authenticity to his channel.
@@treystills I agree with that. I myself am a bonafide craftsman sometimes less and less, operate as a GC under somebody else's signature. I do have the same appreciation for craftsmanship as you do and that's why I'm still doing most if not all the work but at the same time I have to admire a guy that was able to make it to that level and to be at at it you have to keep your hands from the hand tools and run the company creating as many cash flow opportunities as you can, whether that be plugs for all the products he uses in his projects, becoming a clearing site for useful construction info and at the same time drawing water for his mill, aka self promotion that we all must do one way or another. I'm not sure that he would grow his channel more if he turned into a hands-on craftsman even if he could or wanted to as I suspect he never was one in the first placce, if you go by how he started as a sales man for a big builder and all flowed from there. What he does have, certainly, is a lotta knowledge of the nitty gritty of construction otherwise he couldn't have made it to where he is now. Having survived a failed spec construction biz is no small potatoes in my book. I watch his vids here and there cuz I find useful or interesting ideas. If I wanted to watch a craftsman I pro'ly watch Norm Abraham or somebody like him. It's all a debatable subject and that's why we're going back and forth with it, but I do take your point. Cheers.

If you want extra money you need extra skills why would someone pay you more for no reason? Apart from inflation there is no good reason

I wonder what benefits he offers his employees now, having experienced exploitation as an employee...
