Don't forget to stock up for the new year challenge. Remember what you ran out of last year that you wanted to make sure you had for the next. Garden vegetables look good.
I didn't know about the vinegar bath - thanks! I make my own vinegar (but not for canning) just because it tastes so good and kills ants. I also use it to wash my grocery store produce. Just never winter squash. The squash bugs did my squash in.They then destroyed my tomatoes - I got ONE tomato from couple dozen plants. Need to do something next year! Thanks for an informative and pleasant video today - I saw the intro and thought you were going to sneak up on the bees. I'm so glad you resisted but it was frightening. LOL
I need to feed the bees, but I haven't mustered up the drive to do it yet. :) Try growing mochata squash varieties next year....Squash bugs may still be present, but they don't prefer those varieties nearly as much.
@@TheHappyHomestead I tried the tromboncino this year and LOVED them. They didn't get squash bugs until all the other squash and the tomatoes were dead and pulled, so they are now my new favorites. Thanks again for the info!
How exciting about the passion fruit. God is good. Thanks for all the great info to help preserve our food. ACV for the win!! Do you save any of your seeds?
What is the name of the long skinny squash? How do u use it in your cooking? I love how you teach and share. You make it easy to understand & learn from you. Thank you!!
Tromboncino. It's an heirloom Italian variety, that can be eaten and cooked as a summer squash when harvested fresh, or let to cure and used as a winter squash. I'm saving it to use in anything that I would normally use butternut for. Thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad you found it useful.
This is such a great video. My neighbor just harvested the squash and we are curing the squash and will be storing it. Rubbing them with Apple Cider Vinegar is an excellent idea. Thank you so much. ❤️🙌
How far away is your homestead garden to your home? Do you have water on the separate property to sustain your garden. We have yet to figure out that plan. Ours is about 30 miles away from our home and totally off grid, we do have access to a natural spring that forms a stagnant pond and a creek that runs through property.
The homestead garden is about 25 miles away from our home, and like you, we don't yet have water on the property. There is a natural spring, and we know that it does perc, but right now I'm hauling water as needed. And thankfully I haven't needed to much in the last 2-3 months due to rain. We also thought about setting up a rain catchment system with a portable water tank, but haven't done that yet.
Thanks for sharing. I learned something new. I have a question though. I don’t have a nice trellis for my squash plants so some of them are dirty. Do I wash with water first , let dry and then treat with ACV?
I would let them fully cure first, in a covered and dry place with plenty of airflow. Once the stem is really dry and the skin can't be pierced, then wipe/spot clean. I would not expose to too much water, but you can spot clean as needed and then do you vinegar wipes.

Thanks for this info!
Oh wow that’s awesome information…I didn’t know ACV could help prolong storing winter squash 👍🏼👍🏼💕
It helps to kill bacteria that can degrade your storing ability.

ACV is always the win! :) I have been learning to save seeds, next year will be the test to see if I did it successfully.

I much prefer a butternut pie to pumpkin.
Same!
