  • Slow Living in the City - Finding Calm and Beauty in City Life
Hey there beautiful! I recently visited NYC to see my friends and family before heading on to California for a visit. New York City is a place I “grew up in” from ages 18-22 and it was this city that made me the person I am now. I have a lot of love, admiration and respect for New York and the experiences I had there…despite me never being able to live there again. I felt compelled to make this video after enjoying the magic and beauty of city life for a few days. In it, I share my honest opinions about city living.
Also, friendships are so important to me, and getting the chance to go back for a few days to see them after so long apart made my heart incredibly happy. 🥰 At the end of the video, I share some behind-the-scenes footage of how I filmed the video and Candice, my best friend from college, vlogged with me. I hope you enjoy it! :)
I’m sending you a big hug and lots of butterflies!
    Love,
    Helena!

I personally feel so alive and energized in cities--so many things of beauty to look at and admire. The comradery of all of the people. It's comforting to me. I also love traveling up north to the North Shore, or anywhere there is a body of water. It's true, you can love both and appreciate and enjoy everywhere. Ironically enough, big, open spaces or extremely rural places where there isn't another person in sight, or some sort of modern element like a store can leave me feeling panicked haha!

I feel the same way on cities and rural places. As much as i love the countryside and would like to live out there tbh, it does give me the impression of being all alone on earth and it’s more of a scarier feeling than comforting to me ✨

dear Helena, usually I have trouble appreciating cities, big cities. For the Europeans, I find that NYC is a bit cliché, the place to visit and it’s a bit of a classic s race.
For the very first time, I see NYC through your eyes and it completely changes my mind. Your choices to show off your NYC are surprising, deep, completely intimate and therefore valuable. It
shows that it is the soul of life, it is the hope that men have put in
it, their way of establishing a quality of life, sincerity and freedom.
For me, you would be a guide to visit , exceptional. Because you put the very essence of life in the foreground. Congratulations for this video that I find absolutely touching. You really have a gift for showing the best in life, in the human being. I am delighted to be able to change my mind about this mythical big city.

Never thought I'd find a video about New York to be calm and relaxing but I guess if anyone can do it, it would be you :-). Your words and imagines are magic. NY is a place I'm not sure about visiting. With health issues (fibromyalgia) I'm not sure how I would handle the noise, busyness and getting around. Maybe one day.... While I definitely don't want to live a big city , I can certainly see the appeal and love to visit them for vacations. What a fun trip down memory lane with your friend.

"Attaining inner peace and calm in any environment is a true sign of mastery, and I am nowhere near that yet, but the least I can do is try." - so beautifully expressed! It's really hard to go back to places that hold a lot of internal chaos and trauma. I hope returning and creating this video was healing for you.
I absolutely LOVE your wise words. I particularly appreciated your section in this visual essay on what "courage" is ...
"feeling fear and pushing through it anyway" ... "putting yourself through discomfort to come out sparkling" ... "getting it done and putting it out there instead of demanding for it to be perfect" ... "shooting for B minus work when you are thirsty for A's" ... I admit to rewinding over and over to write that part down, all word for word. I have quoted you today in my journal. Thank you for encouraging me to walk through the discomfort I'm in right now, and to trust it means I can "come out sparkling" eventually. :)
You have a beautiful channel. Thank you for sharing your gift. Please continue!

Peace and contentment comes from within, not from a place. Having said that, I love travel and experiencing new places. I spent the majority of my adulthood in the UK where I raised two children, I have lived and studied in Corsica, worked in China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Cameroon, Nigeria and Ethiopia. Now retired in Sweden. I miss my family in the UK and travel further afield due to Covid, but times will come when I can travel again, and in the meantime I enjoy and cherish what's around me here in Sweden.

I drove to the city last week and was completely heartbroken to see how ghostly it looks...walked around Canal St looking for my favourite Chinese restaurant just to find out it was gone😢...80% of stores on Canal St were closed. It seemed deserted...hope and pray everyone can hopefully recover someday from this pandemic. Stay safe love. Sending you so much love and light ❤️

I often find that for me, joy, contentment, peace are hard fought for and only seldom achieved, while boredom, sadness, melancholy and desire are far more accessible, as close as my left elbow.
More and more, I find I thrive on silence, stillness, and I need these elements to break open the sea of creativity that lies just under the thin layer of perennial ice, the creativity that feeds me, that oxygenates my soul.
Sometimes this need itself leads to frustration because in my mind's body, I can take long, quiet, contemplative walks in beautiful pastoral places, feeling the earth packed semi hard under my feet, watch small insects buzzing around flowers, separate universes unencumbered by the things that weigh on me, but in my actual body, I'm tired, in pain, and stuck on an island of hard edges, concrete and brick, where soil and plants and nature are curated, and it's not the same.
So today, I took a shower, put a pretty scarf in my hair, got dressed and dragged my folding camp chair out onto the walkway in front of my apartment door. I'm writing this as I sit here with my favorite, new "give thanks" mug full of coffee, and watching the sky over Manhattan darken as night and an early autumn storm move in.
It's not quiet, but it's "city-quiet". It's not exactly in the midst of nature, but from where I'm sitting, I can see that a few bunches of leaves in the gingko trees on my block are beginning to turn yellow, and beyond the low hum of distant traffic punctuated by the occasional horn, car door, siren or voices, the trees are rustling gently in the wind, and if I listen closely enough, a dog barks in the far distance, and even here, even now, evening birds, and something that sounds like crickets.

Love the narration. You are a talented story teller as well as cinematographer. You pull it all together in a very professional way. Everything flows. Very enjoyable. Re: Country versus City. Quiet over chaos. No competition or division, just a preference. Mine is the quiet.
We are made up of different temperments. Extrovert. Introvert..Ambivert. As we experience life and grow, the experiences we crave change. We all experience life differently. And that's okay. And that is what makes each of our stories colourful and rich. Loved you chillaxing listening to LP's. You seemed very content and looked very much like you belonged there, like you were 'home.' That's how I feel whenever I leave British Columbia. As soon as I see the Rocky Mountains, and the ocean, it feels like home to me.

The author is more privileged than most, but I love his perspectives on slow living and the pockets of peace & joy he was able to carve out in a place like NYC. I live in a (much) smaller city than NYC, but it helped me realign my priorities. Lovely read!

Love ur vlog and ur perspective....and I love NYC... I grew up in NY/Long Island when i was a teenager and was so blessed to live in the city again in 2017 (left again in 2020 in the midst of COVID).....However, not to drag the mood down,NYC was/is/was(?) a multi-cultural and a dynamic place, I wondered when it will be safe for ME/Asian to return again when there is a spike (literally everyday) on Anti-Asian hate crime....

I appreciate your videos very much! With thanks from Canada. P.S. If you pinch the metal bar at the top of the mask down over the bony part of your nose, the mask will (probably!) stay in place.

Oh thank you Carol!! I've been seriously struggling with these 95 masks - they are always shifting after enough use. Appreciate the tip! 🤗💕

Great video, but...the climatic consequences of so much flying vis-a-vis the message of simplicity and sustainability?

    • @helenawoods
      @helenawoods  3 роки тому +3

I see my mother once every 2 years. So minimizing my flights is actually sustainable. There is no other way to get to San Diego in a practical way than taking a flight. My relationships are very important to me and going out to see them once every few years is a priority for me. 💕
