  • It's a well-worn discussion: what is better, stand-up striking arts or BJJ? The truth is that both have their strengths and weaknesses, but the worst thing you can do is deny your own art's weaknesses and ignore the strengths of other arts.
I love Kyokushin, and I love the energy of the martial arts even more. I love BJJ for everything about it. And BJJ, first and foremost is a fighting sport with several different rule sets. Some BJJ leaders acknowledge the importance of self-defence, whilst narrowing the range of techniques they use in those situations. But what about the opponent who doesn't care? They bite, snap fingers, gouge your eyes, wreak havoc on your precious family jewels, and smash your head into the bitumen without a second thought.
Sosai Mas Oyama said that if we wish to call ourselves martial artists we cannot be ignorant of the fundamentals of other arts. In This is Karate, Sosai says,
In general, karate is performed from a standing position, and the fight is decided by a strike or a kick before either combatant has been pinned to the ground. If, however, the karate-ka finds himself pinned down, there are ways for him to extricate himself, and in actual combat, these may very well be vital. After all, it is by no means certain that in real life an opponent is going to employ strict stand-up s methods. He may very well attack with judo or wrestling tactics, and when he does, it is necessary for the karate-ka to know how to deal with him.
Those words were written in the 1960's, before the current boom of mixed martial arts and BJJ. Despite everything there are still karate-ka out there who deny the presence of grappling in karate, disregarding what Sosai says and ignoring the fact that the old masters who created the kata we regularly practice were usually also highly experienced in judo and jujutsu.
For a karate-ka to call himself a martial artist he must be familiar with the fundamentals of BJJ. And as a starting point, the guard is a position that arguably defines the sport.
Today I am addressing some possible damgers in the guard, some possible solutions, and some considerations for BJJ practitioners as well.
