Figured Id ask this. I have a 1992 yamaha XJ600 SecaII (inline 4), I bougt it used, and it at first didnt rev above 6000, replaced the filter, and it revved all the way up, but has rev hang. I opened the carbs up and found the floats were set wrong, and I fixed that and put the mix screws on the carbs back to default, replaced the plugs, and checked the stator. still rev hang. I used starting fluid on the carb joints and found a massive air leak. I ordered new carb joints, is there anything else I should check while waiting for the carb joints? thank you for your time man, love your videos
I can understand the Scion branding moment from Toyota. When I grew up in Vietnam, Toyota did have a reputation to be “the uncool car that your middle-aged dad and all his friends drive”. That was 10 years ago. Now I live in the US and I still chuckle every time I hear people in the US go crazy for Toyota. No hate on Toyota tho, my dad only ever owned a Corolla and I wish I could ship that car over from home instead of having to buy a different car here.
I had the OG 2005 Scion XB. It went through everything (and I live in Buffalo so lots of salt, potholes and snow). It ran until 2022 when a friend rolled it at 300,000. I miss that car so much. It was amazingly reliable and practical and unlike so many newer cars, you could easily see everything around you.
FYI - Toyota marketed the Scion brand thinking that many (most) young people in Japan like to customize their cars, so Toyota sells them bare bones. So they tried the same thing over here - bare bones car, cheap as possible, specially for kids that like to customize themselves. It didn't really catch on, but that was the original idea.
My independent mechanic told me about a Scion FR-S a lady brought in. She’d been driving it several months where it would run fine, then suddenly quit. She would let it set for about 15 or 20 minutes, crank it right up and take off. He hooked up his machine to it and immediately leaped for the key to turn it off. Not a drop of water, coolant, nothing and she’d been driving it like that for months! He said if that had been a Camaro or Mustang the pistons would have welded shut. He poured in some coolant and she drove it off.
Lucky for me I got to rebuild my 04 Tacoma after 200k. New engine, clutch, rack and pinion, AC refurbished, brakes, and new brighter lights. 24 miles on the freeway 19 in town. All for under 5k. Just like a new car. At age 70 it will definitely outperform and outlast me.🖖
I have a 2006 scion xb with 368000 miles, still going strong. I have only had to replace the catalytic converter a couple times, new brake pads, spark plugs and most recently the oil pan, as expected with mileage. It still gets pretty good mileage, but need to use better gas and high mileage oil now. I think Scion has been the absolute best car ever made!
The GREAT thing about a tachometer in a automatic is useful for when your automatic transmission is starting to slip or acting funny! So they’re not pointless in automatics
Seeing your 1..8 l 1981 corolla sr5 is nostalgic. I had the 1980 version, same two door liftgate, same sr5 package, same COLOUR even. Real rear drive, drove like a sports car. Still miss it... My first Toyota.
You just gotta love those hand-crank windows. I think it's probably cheaper to fix those than the power window counterparts. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) Those simple features are extremely hard to find.
My 2005 Civic had manual everything. 5 speed trans, hand crank windows, tooth and bar seats, pivots for the mirrors. Not a single part ever broke. Had over 200,000 city miles on it by the time I got rid of it.
In the military, vehicles are all manual, NO POWER anything (windows, doors, wipers). Saves weight, & less failure. I remember an M-49, it had manual wipers. Field conditions are brutal on anything, vehicles, planes, equipments.
Also, you need to make a video on how to find for sale by owner vehicles. The crooked greedy bastard dealers have taken over auto trader and all the places we used to be able to go to buy from private owners.
Yes,it's very dangerous too! I was set up in Houston, actually my bf was. Almost kidnapped & robbed! They payed a suburban classy lady to pretend she owned this great van we wanted for a road trip, very scary🧐
My Scion tC is the best car I could ask for. Super reliable, fun to drive, sportier looking, and surprisingly practical with the hatchback and folding seats. I can fit my dads old vintage Yamaha bmx bike in the back whenever I wanna take it somewhere to ride. I even went on a small day fishing trip with a friend in the car by running our rods diagonally in the back😂

4x4 'health' warning: 2008 Ford Ranger 3.0 XLT 4-wheel drive system (& many other selectable 4 wd systems fitted to pickup trucks): This has part-time (selectable) 4 wheel drive, as far as I know without a central diff (as fitted to AWD systems) to deal with differences in rotational speed between the front & rear axles, such as when turning, so 4 wheel drive should never be engaged on firm (eg asphalt or concrete) road surfaces because that puts unnecessary stress and risk of serious costly damage to driveline components (eg transfer case). That could also lead to greater wear on tyres and driveline components. Just thought to share that here. Scotty, enjoy viewing your videos and learning from you.

My 06 xB burns a little over a qt every 5K, and oil change time. On a hwy trip it'll get 35 mpg. It just turned 200K on the odometer. I wish I'd found a 5 spd. I had a 1.8ltr 4cylinder in a 1999 Toyota Corolla and it was a great engine. It was more dependable than a Rolls Royce engine or any fine German engineered car I have ever had. I would recommend ths engine to be in most small to medium practical cars. However if it's speed you want, you will find most manufacturer's very obliging, but mostly it will be for their benefit and very little practical benefit for you.

Toyota released some Japan market Toyota cars under a different brand name in North America. The boxy looking Scion was called the Toyota BB in Japan. Japan has a system of licensing and taxing that is more expensive as the engine displacement increases. The Toyota BB was a small engine big (or big-ish) interior car. It was very popular in Japan. I would have enjoyed purchasing one here in Canada.
I fell off a Harley once.....once. I like being IN a car than being ON a bike. And with people distracted driving with their nose stuck in their phones. Riding a Motorcycle is fun, but man it much more dangerous than riding in a car.
I had this argument with a friend who Manages a John Deere store. I said my NKG iridium spark plugs were coated, and that they didn't need anti-seize. He laughed at me and said, I would've problems in the future. I hope you're right Scotty, I hope you're right. I've been thinking about removing them and using anti-seize, and then I found this video this morning.
I use NGK, or Denso with Permatex anti-seize. You only need a dab for a few threads. People apply too much and accidentaly foul the plug gap electrodes. Or carbon track the plug shorting along the porcelin ceramic with too much anti-seize. Plug quality? Champion and Motorcraft plug ceramics are sketchy and the steel is crap. I have had very expensive issues with those disintegrating in removal. Just snapping off with 3/8" socket and mere 40lb ft. Torque by hand. So, For a standard non irridium plug, I like Autolite. AC/Delco may suck now if made out of chineseum. Nippondenso and NGK=Asia, High Quality.
I have known people with Ford Rangers that had a lot of miles on them and they still drove them all the time. Of course having the manual transmission helps with that. I figure an older one will outlast and have a lower cost of ownership than a new one will.
Hey Scottie, what is your opinion of the 2023 Toyota 2.4 L 4cyl. It is said to be bulletproof and been out many years. Your opinion is what we seek and appreciate. Thanks
I had an 1980 Toyota Corolla with the 1.8 LT. engine and it too wouldn't start after running it on the highway for about an hour and the issue was my ignition. I now have a 2014 Toyota Yaris LE with 161,000kms. Replaced the compressor and condenser fan works but I still don't have any AC.
Replace the cooling fan. My Suzuki had this problem but the electric cooling fan wasn’t turning fast enough. I had replaced it already with a cheap one on the internet. You get what you pay for, mostly. 😊
Same. A major local motorcycle shop here on the North Shore in Massachusetts here where I am when I asked them about changing 2 tires on a scooter told me they'd charge $500 in labor. Sounded excessive.
My 2008 corolla has trouble starting if you leave it 10 minutes after a good warmup. Maybe 15 minutes of driving. It will turn over but it struggles. Leave it half an hour no problem, brapps right up.
One thing about the 3.0l in the rangers that have misfires is majority of the time it’s do to the exhaust valve going bad as they are notorious for exhaust valve seats going bad
Hey Scotty, I bought a 2009 Scion TC 5 speed manual with 106k miles. I noticed that sometimes when shifting from 1st to 2nd, it won’t shift. It’s like I have to find the “sweet spot” sometimes. Most of the time is shifts fine, but it’s really annoying when it happens. And when you shift to third gear, it makes a grinding noise. Again, if I find the “sweet spot” it will not make the grinding noise. Apart from that, it’s a fun little car. Also AC does not work on it.

Off car subject but u did mention Music store. We do have a few music stores in Az, Zia Records and Bookman's. Love shopping here because they have all kinds of new and used music, movies, old game systems etc ...
Mine is the 2004 Ranger extra cab no 4 wheel drive has over a quarter million mile. engine was replaced has about 70,000 on the engine. Love my Ford Vulcan engine.
I have a 2004 Toyota Matrix XR w/235k miles on it original EVERYTHING except the STARTER 😂, i run Mobil 1 High Mileage Synthetic, NGK Laser Iridium plugs.. i have had ppl approach my car (im a delivery driver) & ask is your car on?! Good advice, I own an old Toyota Soluna 1.5 Manual and it idles about 2000 rpm. When it's cold it idles about 800:rpm. I replaced a few sensor but when it warms up the rpm goes about 2000 rpm. Any suggestion. Thanks. I live in a small island in the Caribbean Trinidad.
My parents had a full-sized Ford sedan in the late 70s the same thing. Somehow they discovered that if they dumped cold water on the hood, it would start right up. What gives.
Have a 2002 Pontiac vibe. Almost have the same issue with the scion, but my car won't start up 15-45 mins after i use my car. Your help will be muchly appreciated!!
So I have a miracle Kia Optima, 2014, 81K and it somehow runs like a dream. Will probably be my last but I do have the bumper to bumper until 2027 or 135K miles. Stay tuned!
Scotty talking about a 1.8 engine being ‘small’ and ‘tiny’ 😂🤣 Here in the UK, a 1.8 is HUGE!! Most people driving cars putt-putt around in 1.0 to 1.4 litre engines. My 1.6 litre corolla is regarded as a ‘bigger’ engine!! Gotta love Americans 😂😂😂
We had a scion xb. Hamster box. Toaster. Squirrel cage. All kinds of names. Bought it new. Drove it 200k on the vivtec motor. Only thing I had have to change was oil, tires, lower drive belt and once the ignition coils. Sat over the spark plugs. Easiest thing in the world to replace. Great cars. Power? Absolutely none. But if your life is mundane and you commute in traffic. You aren't going to need much power anyhow. Did I mention great gas mileage? Handed it down as a college car. They handed it back. Finally sold it to someone for a song. It was running great at over 200k miles.
Do not buy any Toyota, if you want to save money, but get a vehicle that is more reliable and fuel-efficient. Instead, you can plan to purchase a 2008 Mitsubishi Galant mid-size sedan with the 2.4 L four-cylinder engine and the four-speed automatic transmission.
Hello Mr. Kilmer ? Thinking about buying A 2016 SUV or 2016 Sedan between Toyota or Honda what should I look for as far as mileage & reliability Thank you for your time
You always do easy stuff. Why don’t you do a six cylinders..it will take you forever to remove a lot of stuff to change the spark plugs …even my grandma can do it 4 cylinders…… you only charge breaks and sparks…
Correction - PLASTIC hand crank for the windows....what happened to the metal ones (Rhetorical question)? I know I know, that's why you don't throw away those old wooden thread bobbins.
I almost bought an XD and bought a matrix instead. Its funny because I have never seen a scion on the road today and i know they were not that popular but still...
@@HermannTheGreat I go to get the oil changed when I don't feel like doing it myself. My brakes and spark plugs I don't go to a dealership. The dealerships send me emails all the time to buy my car.

I love me a manual transmission.
I fell off a Harley once.....once.
I like being IN a car than being ON a bike.
And with people distracted driving with their nose stuck in their phones.
Riding a Motorcycle is fun, but man it much more dangerous than riding in a car.
Nineties Hondas all have the same problem, Main Relay solder connections failure.
I had this argument with a friend who Manages a John Deere store. I said my NKG iridium spark plugs were coated, and that they didn't need anti-seize. He laughed at me and said, I would've problems in the future. I hope you're right Scotty, I hope you're right. I've been thinking about removing them and using anti-seize, and then I found this video this morning.
never had a loose spark plug after using anti-seize
@@YuriyYermakov Were your spark plugs coated or regular?
@@vlenhoff whatever Autozone sells, not sure.
So,
For a standard non irridium plug, I like Autolite. AC/Delco may suck now if made out of chineseum.
Nippondenso and NGK=Asia, High Quality.
NGK states on their own website not to use anti seize.
had Scion XB..standard transmission..got 40 on the highway..Got T-Boned..Miss that car..
Thanks
Email him this question
I made a mistake, it's the 2.7L 4cyl for 3023
2023
I had an 1980 Toyota Corolla with the 1.8 LT. engine and it too wouldn't start after running it on the highway for about an hour and the issue was my ignition. I now have a 2014 Toyota Yaris LE with 161,000kms. Replaced the compressor and condenser fan works but I still don't have any AC.
Any thoughts everyone?
Replace the cooling fan.
My Suzuki had this problem but the electric cooling fan wasn’t turning fast enough. I had replaced it already with a cheap one on the internet.
You get what you pay for, mostly. 😊
Same. A major local motorcycle shop here on the North Shore in Massachusetts here where I am when I asked them about changing 2 tires on a scooter told me they'd charge $500 in labor. Sounded excessive.
Correction Scotty, those hand cranks are the manual a/c that used to come standard with all late model vehicles 😂😂
2-60 A/C.
2 windows Don and 60 MPH
My 2008 corolla has trouble starting if you leave it 10 minutes after a good warmup. Maybe 15 minutes of driving. It will turn over but it struggles. Leave it half an hour no problem, brapps right up.
try flooring it , i bet its a leaky injector
@@Dankcatvacs he right
Scotty, is a 2010 Toyota Tacoma with 18,000 mile 6 cyl, ext cab 4wd for $17,000 a good deal. The truck is in excellent condition
Sounds like the synchronizers are going out or shot between those gears.
@@blanerobertson6515Are those easy and cheap to replace?
@@jesusmartinezjr3890 Depends on if you're doing it yourself. I've only ever done them on a RWD vehicle myself, but that was cheap and easy. FWD is a different animal.
Nothing sounds better than a well tuned sportster.
Off car subject but u did mention Music store. We do have a few music stores in Az, Zia Records and Bookman's. Love shopping here because they have all kinds of new and used music, movies, old game systems etc ...
Kia Soul rated at 29 mpg... I get over 40 mpg sometimes... typically when using Shell gasoline they say it doesn't matter but that's what happens...
Mine is the 2004 Ranger extra cab no 4 wheel drive has over a quarter million mile. engine was replaced has about 70,000 on the engine. Love my Ford Vulcan engine.

I'm going to guess fuel pressure is depleting from either the pressure regulator or pump.
imagine scottie talking at sema opening show or a vehicle industry meeting
They did the music store thing in Australia 🇦🇺 too! 😂😂😂😂
Doctor Scotty needs to do more tests 🗒️
Those ridiculous pictures added to the video while Scotty is talking are hilarious. 😆😆
I had an 06 scion Xb. Manual car.. best car I’ve owned. Fun to drive, easy to work on, tons of space.
LOL yes! The thing runs like a top.. i swear by Iridium plugs.. bought the car in 2018 w/112k miles 😂 500k here we come!
Having a headwind or a tailwind on a trip makes a huge difference in mileage.
I can tell you that just from running hahaha
have a 2022 toyota camry and noted in this video 2.5 4l are bad engines, should i get rid of it, i'm 72 and want my last car to last plur prefer older like one's you and wife hv. would like in 2000 era, hate cvt transmission owned 2 subaru. thx for info you give.
My 15 year old PT Cruiser has no problem starting up or running whatsoever.
The 883 is indeed one of the best bikes ever.
The ignition control module or the coil pack was causing the misfire on my 2000 chevy impala so it may be what's wrong with that Ford Ranger.
My parents had a full-sized Ford sedan in the late 70s the same thing. Somehow they discovered that if they dumped cold water on the hood, it would start right up. What gives.
I could not learn to drive until I drove a 5 speed.
I met a guy who hated his xD. He pointed out that it wasn't aerodynamic and had lots of rock chips.
Have a 2002 Pontiac vibe. Almost have the same issue with the scion, but my car won't start up 15-45 mins after i use my car. Your help will be muchly appreciated!!
It is a Pontiac, donate it a buy a used Toyota.
^ they’re actually the same car jus with a different body & Pontiac badging.. 😂😂😂
My first car was.. almost a Scion, about 6 years ago
So I have a miracle Kia Optima, 2014, 81K and it somehow runs like a dream. Will probably be my last but I do have the bumper to bumper until 2027 or 135K miles. Stay tuned!
Scotty talking about a 1.8 engine being ‘small’ and ‘tiny’ 😂🤣
Here in the UK, a 1.8 is HUGE!! Most people driving cars putt-putt around in 1.0 to 1.4 litre engines. My 1.6 litre corolla is regarded as a ‘bigger’ engine!!
Gotta love Americans 😂😂😂
🇺🇸 👍🏼
I've seen a new 2020 Scion which was actually a rebranded Mazda
Scotty what would you recommend for a jump start that you can keep in your car or truck
Hello
Mr. Kilmer
? Thinking about buying
A 2016 SUV or 2016 Sedan between Toyota or Honda what should I look for as far as mileage & reliability
Thank you for your time
I just bought a 2008 scion xd with 72,000 miles for $3850, great running and gas mileage.
W purchase!…
You always do easy stuff. Why don’t you do a six cylinders..it will take you forever to remove a lot of stuff to change the spark plugs …even my grandma can do it 4 cylinders…… you only charge breaks and sparks…
Correction - PLASTIC hand crank for the windows....what happened to the metal ones (Rhetorical question)? I know I know, that's why you don't throw away those old wooden thread bobbins.
I almost bought an XD and bought a matrix instead. Its funny because I have never seen a scion on the road today and i know they were not that popular but still...
❤️ manual transmissions... 🤗
Hate replacing worn out clutches! 👎😡
I had two standard cars. Both went over 130, 000 on the same cutch. One brand new. If you don't ride them they will last a long time.
idk why i found you looking at the spark plugs all close up , hilarious...God bless Scotty
I had one for 15 years and saved $$$$.$$🎉
Cool. Thanks Scotty.
If its anything like Nissan infiniti g37 there's a light somewhere pulling electricity that won't turn off🤔
......UNTIL you look at the IIHS crash tests. No Bueno!
2012 9.0 RS Scion xB 133k runs like a top. No oil consumption issues. Dealerships keep offering to buy it from me.
Why do you keep going to dealerships if your car is so good?
@@HermannTheGreat maintenance
My sister has a 2006 scion Xb and it also runs fine and dealers are offering a lot to buy it.
@@HermannTheGreat I go to get the oil changed when I don't feel like doing it myself. My brakes and spark plugs I don't go to a dealership. The dealerships send me emails all the time to buy my car.
so what are we buying instead of toyotas for 6x less? ford p/u trucks? motorcycles? scions? all three? I'm guessing scions?
