- FEAR OF NEEDLES. In today's Dr. C's Tips episode, we talk about strategies and techniques to use next time you have to visit the doctor and a needle is involved. If you're scared of needles, or avoid getting shots or giving blood because of it, these tips will help you cope better. Hey, even if you'd like to try botox but don't want to do it because you're afraid of needles, these techniques will help you out!

I salute every person out there that can just walk into a room and get a needle fine. I cry for about a week before getting it then sob while getting it and complain for a week after :)

The shot never hurts me it just I get an intense rush of anxiety when they wipe me with the... The thing they wipe ur arm with before the shot.

I’m getting my shot tomorrow and I always find that it’s not when the needle goes in, it’s when it’s coming out that you get a sharp pain... like if you agree, I wanna know if more people are with me.

I think that depends on the shot. I had to get contrast injected into my hand for an mri and going in hurt like a bitch and the fluid going in made me freak out from the feeling. IV’s dont hurt at all coming out

I sort of have a fear of needles, but I honestly don’t at the same time. Mainly because whenever I’m at the doctor’s office an instinct of mine is to have a wave of anxiety drown me. Then after the vaccine is over, it’s like I wasn’t even afraid. Like for example, you’re at an amusement park and you are severely scared of rollercoasters, but you go on one just because you are bored. Then after it you enjoyed it but 8 months later and you’ve returned to the park, then again. You’re terrified,

I remembered my parents had to hold me down and I could move while the doctor put a needle in my arm. I remembered looking at the needle going through my skin, it was like a murder scene for me 😅. I am terrified of needles. Though it doesn’t hurt much, just by looking at it, it makes me afraid

Here’s my tips as someone who is terrified of needles.
1. Wear comfy clothes, nothing extra, be simple about it. And definitely wear a short sleeved shirt so you don’t have to take off a sweatshirt, take off your shirt, or roll your sleeves up. I always find that having to do extra things builds up the anxiety even more.
2. Usually doctors ask if you want a countdown, take the countdown. If they don’t ask if you want one tell them. I know people might say to not do a countdown because it’ll be quick and there won’t be as much buildup, but the sudden jolt of the needle always makes me tense up and it hurts more.
3. DON’T TIGHTEN YOUR ARM UP!!! Always let your arm hang loose it hurts way more if your tensed up.
4. Bring a loved one if you can. Most of time it helps me when I can squeeze someone’s hand with the arm that isn’t getting a shot, it depends on the day for me though.
5. Think of a song. I don’t recommend wearing headphones and listening to music for something that’s usually quick and over with, but just think of a song. A simple song that you know by heart to distract yourself.
6. Remember that it’s a very quick process usually and when you leave the doctors office you are going to laugh at yourself for being so scared.
7. One of the things they really terrifies me about needles is me thinking about it touching the bone. Don’t worry about that! Yes it is possible I won’t lie but you wont feel it. The only issue is that it probably wont fully absorb into the muscle.
8. Do not ever ever look at the needle. Squeeze your eyes shut!!! It hurts way more when you actually see it.
9. Crying is normal and unavoidable. I always start shaking hours before the appointment and find myself crying during it. Don’t be embarrassed to cry, it happens to all of us.

THANK YOUUU... i need to get a blood test in 2 days. My only issue is that im physically shaking every single time i know theres a procedure done with a needle. With vaccine is just a pinching stab pain. but with a blood test everytime they drawn my blood, my arm is physically weaken and it hurts😭😭

@@looneydoo Ah I’ve gotten blood tests, definitely not fun. Distracting yourself is the best for those. Think of a song or count or repeat a phrase in your head. Really try to zone out. And LOOK AWAY!! With any needle thing just LOOK AWAY. Also maybe try not to cry for those. I know sometimes it’s inevitable but once a nurse felt bad for me because I was crying so she stopped early and then had to do the OTHER ARM too because she didn’t get enough blood. I also don’t recommend squeezing your eyes shut, instead look the opposite direction and focus on something. When you shut your eyes you can only think about the needle but if you read a poster or something it might help more. Good luck! Needles are the worst 😭💕

@@violet_rush my anxiety still very high and unfortunately the nurse is kinda impatient bcs they cant find my veins. they do find faintly on my right arm and 3 days later it still bruising and a bit hurt to the touch😢😢

I’m binge watching these videos because my fiancé and I are going to get the covid vaccine, and I’m petrified of shots. Plus I’m scared of the thought of getting an adverse affect. I’m doing the drive thru vaccine method so my husband can be there and hold me to look away while they’re doing it.
Great video! I’m a public health nurse and give vaccines to elementary school kids . I like to talk to them to distract them from the needle.

I’m terrified of needles and what feeds it most is me being SO terrified (I have good reflexes) I pull back and it make me think “when I pull back the doctor will stop” but what’s really happening is “if I jerk, the needle can hit something, cause it to bleed inside or worse paralyze it and never be able to use it again” and that’s what terrifies me but it’s the fact of watching so many doctor shows with them getting stuck with needles and how the skin pushes down and it also gives my anxiety if the doctor accidentally hit something and again, bleed or paralyze...
I honestly don't mind the pain at all and I can barely feel it, I'm also not scared of having the needle get stuck or getting sick or even dying I just get extremely nervous as soon as i see a needle it's just the fact its there and it exists is what scares me.
I'm about to leave my house to get my 12 year old shot and I'm freaking out here...wish me luck.

@@Kixtii I will have to admit, I honestly was freaking out for nothing. I think it's just the fear of the pain that really gets to you. Honestly, the shot doesn't hurt. You can feel it, of course, but it's not as bad as we make it seem. Try not to worry too much. You'll do great :)

I have my vacation and I'm having another one . I was in school crying and they made me go first. They say don't look and don't tense up well ... I did . Anyother nurse came to distract me.
I'm dating a phlebotomy student and she wants to draw my blood as part of her class, and even thinking about needles freaks me out. Gonna try these and see if they help.
Throughout my whole life, and now, I've had multiple IVs given to me, a lot of blood work done, and medication given to me through injections. I've gotten so used to them.
The first few times, I asked the nurse who was giving me my IV to distract me by asking me what I enjoy most. We had a full conversation for 15 minutes about musicals. 1 minutes of those 15 minutes was the insertion of the IV. It's a lot easier when you're distracted.

I have had a. Extreme anxiety and fear of needles since day on as a child. I do not do at all well with pain and needles pain. I am already anxious and anxiety ridden before I get there. I literally start getting the sweets when they are wiping my arm for the shot or what ever it is. Then as soon as its in me all it takes is them move the shot and I can literally feel the needle in my skin. As its penching my skin. Then it happens i start dry hiving then I go clammy and both my arms pretty much get this intense like 100 of 1000 of bees. In my arms and hands and I literally loose the use of my arms and hand for what seems like a eternity. I get so extremely sick and So very nauseous to sing released with dry heaving and sometimes not dry heaving it’s the real thing. It’s like my body wants to go crazy and I can not stop it and it takes me awhile before I feel better. I have often wonder if my body is trying to work. Against me as maybe my body has no idea what it needs to do. I have also wondered if my body is try to make me faint but at the same time getting in the why of that. And trying to stop me so it’s putting all this hell down on me at onetime. But If I even see the site of You know what along with the needle its over I am done. I lose my body control. Just talking about this in my mind as i type this it really make me extremely uneasy and sick feeling.
The last shot I got I almost fainted. After I got my flu shot I started becoming pale and I felt nauseous. My anxiety got the better of me. Now I'm getting my covid shot today. I'm going to try and distract myself on a game I will try.

I have this thing called growth hormone disability. It’s when I don’t grow tall as the average of my age. I’m 13 and only 4’10. I take a shot every day, and for me it’s just like brushing my teeth. I've found getting blood drawn from the top of my hand in the middle nearest my knuckles helps. But the side of my hand, wrist, or arm are a huge NO x.o

Just got vaccinated for covid last week. I was scared to death of getting a needle inside my arm so I read a lot about it. Finally mustered up some courage and went for it. Literally, it felt like a joke. The nurse put it in and I felt like it would go a little deeper and might hurt after that, but 3 seconds in, she took it back out and I was like “done already?”, she was like “yep”

@@juliosica2098 I got the cansino vaccine and I couldn’t even feel the needle going in. There may be side effects of the vaccine later on (which I felt too) but as far as the needle is concerned, just don’t look at it and you’ll be fine :)

I’m getting my meningitis shot on Thursday in so scared :(
I’m usually all good for days before hand and then about two days before, I start to feel nervous. Then the night before I have multiple panic attacks (that stage right now). Then I’m fine in the morning and I step into the room and burst into tears, shake, and occasionally faint. Also, how you said that the thing is very likely not gonna happen, so… they’re not gonna stick a needle in me?
I’m sure this video was made with the best of intentions, but it is the usual ‘look away and think of something else’ advice which anyone can offer. Also the picture of the video implies some special technique (a woman holding her hand up to one eye) which never appears in the video. At least it didn’t start with a picture of someone being injected which is what we often see from UA-camrs that really don’t understand needle phobia. Personally I’ve tried everything over the last 20 years and the terror remains.

The problem with me is that I even hate the idea of something going into my vain and taking blood out. To make things worse, I faint at the sight of needles and even fainted once just when the doctor was showing me how the process works (without even showing me the needle). I need to get blood taken desperately but I’m way too scared. I am even seeing a therapist to specifically help me get over this phobia, but I’m just too terrified to get it done. Any advice?

A tip I have, Think idiotic things- such as "If my house was a hogwarts house which one would it be" or "If water was a person would it be nice or mean?" ask questions to yourself or just think of stuff you can treat yourself with after it
I’ve hated needles and therefore doctors offices sines forever and I remember one time when I was little I had to sit in my parents lap as they held my arms down and I kicked the Poor nurse in the face. No regrets in the moment and still I get Intense anxiety getting shots, although I don’t kick anyone anymore 😅
I am terrified of needles I have to get 3 and got an alergic reaction and had to take 2 more
I'm afraid of the pain and fear of getting a shot, and every time I get a shot my guess as to how scary and painful it will be has allways been wrong, it's allways been far worse, and everyone around me has semingly done everything in their power to make the whole expereince of getting a shot as bad as posible, such as my family accsadentally making fun of me and intentionally bellitling be for having a fear of neddle, traumatizing me even further
im scared of the pain and I don't wanna cry bc im pretty old to cry and im scared that there is a needle going into me
Why is she not doing trainings on this at every clinic and hospital. Both my boyfriend and I have serious needle issues and we want medical attention, but everyone has been incredibly cavalier when we tell them we have issues with needles. They just tell us to look away, and we still faint. It's gotten so bad that he doesn't do vaccines, not because he is against them, but honestly because he has had so many bad experiences. We both got our COVID shots, but we were immense babies had to take PTO to deal with the anxiety, and we were just absolutely neurotic for the week leading up to it with each other.

Yea so basically I'm very much over my fear of needles , that vaccine is actually what got me over it lol, I cried and fussed a lot right before but the nurse calmed me down by singing with me (it was kinda embarrassing) but it rlly helped and since then I've even had my blood drawn!! Which I havnt done since I was 6 because of my fear (I'm 17 now) . Being distracted rlly helps so rambling a ton to the doctor or anyone who's with you while it's happening really really helps, Anyway it only hurt for a second , and I mean literally a second, the real pain was the soreness after , but that only lasted a day and it wasnt awful, I just poured hot water on it often and it hurt way less. I used to get worried smth will go wrong but at the end of the day you just gotta remember that these people are professionals, who have done this a bajillion times before. also i know this is obvious but dont look at the needle!!!!! Itll just make you unnecessarily anxious! sorry this is long lol , have a great day/night!! I believe in you!!!

God!! trigger warning pleaseeee… almost every video I see about tips and treatments just present pictures or videos of needles without warning. I mean who do you think is searching for these videos specifically? YES. People with a needle phobia. Your tips might be very useful but now all I’m gonna do is try to get my anxiety levels down again so I can continue looking for help.
Great ideas! Looking away definitely helps me although I will say everyone is different and I I know some it helps to look

Ive got to have a injection at school to prevent us from getting cancer in the future. Im TERRIFIED of needles so i need to know how to control the fear.
I get anxiety when I have injection in the foot but arms is fine
42 years old. I dont get necessary medical treatments due to the fear. Currently have possible cancer on my cheeks. I have no plans to go.

I'm a little weird. I broke my thumb a few months ago. I shrugged it off like it was nothing, and was playing football the following week. Confront me with the prospect of 4 injections tomorrow morning and I can't relax at all.
