Hi Terry, great video as usual. You didn’t mention the recently introduced Dirac Live Bass Control (DLBC), i.e. gives you the ability to integrate subwoofers by filtering out bass from the main speaker channels and feeding that to a subwoofer (or two) and being able to control the crossover, timing and phase between the two. That might be an important consideration for some and I’m not sure all hardware can run it or be upgradeable to it.
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Sure. It’s not even a released product yet, so fully understand, absolutely. I was just thinking about it from the perspective of someone looking to buy hardware today, like the NAD or Dynaudio Focus speakers. It is really very informative video. Great! Thank you. What do you think about the room voicing+equalizing products, which makes this process between preamp and power amp? Some very expensive products from very well known brands claim that it is best way to get the full signal and change it between pre-power amps... Thank you.
I'm contemplating buying a miniDSP Flex unit for room correction and would prefer to buy the analogue in/analogue out version because I can then place it between my pre-amplifier and monoblocks. I use giant Acoustat electrostatic speakers (SPECTRA 6600) and am hoping that the flex unit will improve the sound in my somewhat cluttered listening room.
Working on getting an understanding of this. What if your steamer and your dac are the same device ? Like the arcam st60( it’s the one I have and it does not have dirac native ) ,the arcam then minidsp like the ddrc-24 to an amp

I think I probably would martin yes because you want to get used to them before you try and optimise their sound in your room so you know what you like and what you would like try and and achieve, there is 2 important different stages there
Hi Terry, I’ve reached out before regarding the use of the Dirac application and my system. Because there may not be a way to use the Dirac with my Willsenton tube amp I went ahead and purchased the mid used with the Dirac and plugged it into my iPad and was able to use the mic externally and used the Wiim ultra calibration tool and I made a nice difference. The external mic is much better than the internal iPad microphone. Have you had a chance the use the calibration tool on the Wiim? Would be interested to know what you think.
Informative, thanks. 2 questions: 1) if my sources are SACD player, turntable, tuner & cassette deck, all going into an int amp (maybe tubes), can I insert the DSP unit in that setup so that music from ALL sources enjoys the benefits of Dirac? 2) what are the sonic benefits of Dirac? Thanks.
Hi Terry, I'm relatively new to high end audio and your channel has been a huge support, so firstly thank you very much for the great content and helping educate me! I've now got a Hegel H95 running Buchardt SE400 Mk2's and using Apple TV to stream Apple Music through the TV at 48khz via a toslink from the TV to the Hegel. Separately I run a Linn LP12 directly via the analogue inputs. My question for you is that in your video you suggest connecting the source to the MiniDSP and then to the DAC to remove the number of digital/audio conversions. However, unless I'm missing something, the only way I can do this with MiniDSP products is the use the FLEX Digital, so the digital out goes into the Hegel's DAC. Am I missing something? And Im wondering if I should use a minisDSP or upgrade the Hegel H95 to the H190 and use Roon instead? Room correction being the main goal. Any advice from yourself or any of your followers would be gratefully appreciated! Many thanks!
Great video Terry. Quick question about the MiniDSP. What's your experince with using its digital crossover vs the high level connection for subwoofers?
I think I’m with Terry *provided you can optimise the placement of your subs*. If not, like me (I have one REL T9i immediately to the right of my listening position & one halfway up the left-hand wall), then using the sub outputs allows different timing correction for each, which I think works better for me. Also, in my system (NAD C658 streaming preamp with Dirac), I quite like being able to adjust the crossover frequency in the app depending on the music & listening volume. Hopefully that’s helpful…
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Interesting. I have an integrated tube amp and a MiniDSP Flex between the amp and streamer. I have 2 Rel T5i subwoofers connected to the MiniDSP. Downside is that the only way to adjust the volume is to use the MiniDSP for this as the subwoofers are not connected to the amplifier. This could be solved by using the high level connection of the Rel and connect them to the amplifier (which I had before I had the MiniDSP). My question is, will Dirac work this way?
Hi Terry, I was watching your speaker comparison video, in particular, the section on the LS50 Meta. I picked up a pair and noticed that room gain was very pronounced during the initial setup. In your testing, you mentioned that placement could be fussy. As opposed to tinkering with placement, I ran Anthem's room correction software and the sound snapped into balance. This goes to your point that room correction software is a must. The LS50s replaced a set of Elac UB52s, which are somewhat similar to the KEFs. It's interesting that a room-corrected pair of UB52s sounds better than a non-corrected pair of Metas.
Larry, not all room correction is the same and room gain is not bad its good, the best calibration will utliise the room gain we get to make more of the speakers sound in the room. Dirac Live gives you total control over that and more which is why I use it. Also yes of course if your room is holding the speakers back taking that away will make more of a difference than changing the speaker for a like for like design. The ls50 Meta boost the 50hz region to make the sound bigger and bassier than they really are and if your room boosts that too then its double double and potentially trouble - grrrrr aggressive bass that also probably sounds hollow depending
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Terry, I agree. However, rear-ported designs in my room go crazy. Room gain does help a front-ported design like the UB52s. ARC manages room gain very easily, which is why I like it. From the various room correction demos I've seen on YT, Dirac is much more in-depth and ARC is much easier. Essentially, measure the room and you're done. While it does provide the ability to tweak the results, I'm more than fine with a 90% solution.
wow great overview! im searching everywhere how at DSP room correction to say Eversolo dmp8 where in the chain how? i mean whats point awsome dac when room has issues.
Thats the point of the video, with all in one solutions like the eversolo its not easy to add dirac to them, they would need to add it as a feature. If someone tells you the parametric eq in the eversolo is the same you can tell they dont really know what they are using it for
Great video. Which hardware do I need in this chain: Argon Solo streaming client via toslink to DSP via toslink to DAC ? Would 96 kHz be supported or am I limited to 48?
Hello Terry, appreciated the detailed explanation for someone not familiar with DSP's or Dirac. I have a music only 2.2 system. Unison Research Unico Secondo hybrid integrated amplifier (5 unbalanced RCA ins + 1 balanced XLR in) with the Unico CD to which I recently added a pair of REL T9/x's (high level connection to the speaker out terminals) and a Bluesound Node for streaming (RCA interconnects). Since I already have the Node, can I consider the MiniDSP Flex with the Dirac Live add-on ($700), or will the SHD ($1,300) give me better flexibility. My biggest issue is the two double height glass walls (although I can roll down the shades for optimum listening or if I'm listening to heavy bass recordings - electronica, soundtracks). Is this something that Dirac Live can help with? On other recordings like jazz & most pop/rock, the balance seems spot on. I'm interested in Dirac but am a little weary of going down a deep rabbit hole. Btw, your review of the T9/x steered me their way and they brought new life to my system in our new house, so a big thank you!
Hi Terry, first i like to thank you for your great videos. I have a question regarding Dirac versus Isoacoustics Gaia. You can tweak and tweak to a hifi system as long and as deep as our wallet reach as you know. In the a/b demo video’s i really hear a huge difference with the Gaia. There you are a Dirac specialist, but also reviewed quite a lot the Gaia’s my question is, can you achieve the same results with a good Dirac measurement as with buying a pair of Gaia’s? Really curious what your meaning is on this. Thank you in advance for your answer.
I use the Neumann KH750 with their integrated MA1 DSP / Correction software. I wouldnt hear again without correction. Its a little bit of Measure work and later EQ tweaking to find your sound, but if its done its way better. Never again without the freedom of an DSP. Its the modern ,devils, tool where you can tweak your system how you like it without any negative sound affects because the technology is so good nowdays
Hi Terry, Awesome video. I just bought an Onkyo NR7100 which has Dirac live (Full version) built in. My front speakers are Wharfedale's Valdus 400SE and Dirac set the front, center and surrounds to a crossover of 70Hz? The LPF of LFE is 120Hz. Is this correct? I had the front speakers set to full but a friend said set them to 40Hz instead to reduce the potential stress. The center frequency response 95-20,000 Hz (±3dB) The Surround frequency response 100-20,000 Hz (±3dB) Dirac set the crossovers to 70Hz for the front, center and surrounds? I also have a pair of Time frame TF700 but I think the left speaker has an issue with frequencies above 3KHz as it falls 20 db's. Would love any advice.
If using Roon, and you want flexibility, it seems that the computer Roon Core + Dirac Software into a DAC is the way to go. Saves money on the minidsp not to mention the space, cables, power. Is there anything else I'm missing?
Hi Terry, I'm considering fixing the acoustics of my listening room. Searching on the internet I discovered your UA-cam channel, really well done, your explanations are very understandable, I'm following you assiduously, in short. I would like clarification on the use of Dirac Live, I use a Yamaha RX-A2080 receiver for hifi listening and home theatre, so all audio-video sources are connected to the receiver. In this case, in order to have DSP treatment on all inputs I think I have to use a miniDSP. Can I connect it to a pre-out of the receiver and return to the amp-in input? Thank you. Gianfranco
My advice for adding Dirac to an AV system is use an AV product that has Dirac in it, today that means most of them Denon Marantz Arcam NAD Primare Audio Control JBL Onkyo or Pioneer. Lose the Yamanha and never look back :)
I didn't understand this, I thought that by upgrading to the multiroom version of Dirac in the minidsp I could use room correction on a multichannel system...
Maybe there is but its not something I am aware of. For a while there was a hdmi in and out dirac solution but they dont sell that anymore, My advice is save the money and make the change away from Yamaha as they are falling very behind the pack with nearly every other manufacturer offering Dirac with Bass Control and ART to come its the sensible move IMO
Hi Terry, thanks so much for your informative videos!! I have a Hegel H390 streaming amp with a built-in DAC that does not have Dirac built-in. I believe you suggested the possibility of using a Mini DSP SHD Studio DIRAC room correction processor as the streamer to connect to my Hegel. Any new insights into how this might work? If not, what is the best way to find out? Thanks, Chris.
To use the Hegel you would have to use a separate streamer with a Dirac box in the middle or a streamer with Dirac built in and currently there are not many options which is where miniDSP comes in.
Hello! I use Dirac since years. But there is one question nobody seems to have the perfect answer for. If you have only 2 loudspeakers it´s perhaps better to do only one measurent at the listening position. Pointed straight to the front between the speakers. What do you think?
No because Dirac works off an average and it looks for similarities and differences in the response across the varied points measured especially for the impulse response correction. 1 measurement doesn’t give it the right data and it’s also not true of what your hearing when you think about it the mic only measures the 1 inch around its tip you have 2 ears for starters and hear a lot of the room surrounding you not to just where you sit. That’s the whole point of it :)
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Thank you very much for your quick reply! I tried it years ago with just one measurement. The result was not that good. Correction of Impulse response doesn't play a role with my speakers, Dirac doesn't make any audible correction there either. In the end I only use Dirac to control my room mode (20db @50hz). So, there is no "wow-effect" when I turn Dirac on (apart from the droning sound). I think that the corrected impulse response in particular causes the "wow effect" for many people.
Impulse response correction is not to do with the speakers, its correcting the impulse response of the listening area thats totally different and more important when you think about it. You cant turn it on and off its happening automatically.
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Now I'm totally confused. ;-) I have to think about your answer for a while ... I´m dutch and sometimes different languages doesn´t make it easy.
Hi Terry, would you be able to calibrate a system that consists of the Willsenton 300b, Wiim ultra steamer which does have calibrating capabilities, DAC SMSL su9, Quad speakers-Revela1?
Sorry, I know you have sent a request through my calibration website, I am running so behind on everything right now. No I cannot calibrate your system as it does not have Dirac Live in it and that is the only system I can work on. Sorry about that
@@PursuitPerfectSystem I appreciate your response. The Wiim streamer has a calibration software in it that I used and it did improve my system. I was just interested in seeing whether or not the Dirac would improve it more. Enjoy your videos. Interested in your thoughts on the Quad Revela 1 and the sonus farber sonetto ii?
Dirac will be much better than whats in the WiiM, night and day but if its not designed into the WiiM hardware you cannot use it, this is why I ask for it all the time in my videos. I will test the WiiM I have one here but any system that uses my phone as a measurement device I cannot take seriously.
I'm very interested in getting a Dirac Live product, I'm wondering if I could go coax out of my HifiRose RS150 into a MiniDsp Flex and then back into my RS150 coax input........Would that work?
I dont think you can go and then back into units you woud either have to use the rose as a streamer only or as a dac only depending on what connections it has
Is the dirac from my arcam avr20 the same as dirac stereo? Because when use the eq profile that i have for my home cinema for stereo listening doesn't feel right.
Yes Dirac is always the same and this might not be what you want tyo hear but if your calibration doesn't sound right for music it doesn't sound right for movies either. Your dealing with the same situation, the rooms effect on the sound of the speakers and speakers dont know if they are playing movies or music - its all the same. Work on the music and movies gets better too
The thing is the profiles i have are made with 5.2.1 measurements and it sounds amazing on movies , maybe the profile sugested by dirac it's optimized to work with all speakers. I will try to do a profile using only 2.1 and se if dirac does something different.thx
It will exactly the same, it will measure the front speakers the same and the sub the same. The system config has no bearing. What does is how you use Dirac and then how you pull the systems sound together after. I have done over 100 Arcam calibrations for customers all over the world - trust me I have pushed the Arcams to their limits. If its not right for music its not right its that simple - movies are not amazing at the moment, they can better take motivation from that
Hey. I recently got a stero system (dynaudio evoke 10 and Burson timekeeper 3ir integrated amplifier) i have got this setup as desktop (nearfield). The room is small and one of the speaker is in the corner. I think i want to get the room correction done. The cost of mic and software for computer will set me back to $700 Australian. Do you think it really works wonders? :P
Hallo Terry. In my system i'm looking for a Dirac component with usb in en usb out to function between a Bluesound N130 output and a Denafrips Hermes usb input. But i'm afraid, i can't find the right one at MinisDSP. Or am I wrong?
yeah sadly there is no miniDSP that is USB in and out which is a shame as it would be ideal for a lot of setups, but for a Hermes you could go usb into the miniDSP and AES or Coax out and into the Hermes and that would work
Have a question that Dirac has not replied yet or they missed seeing my email. I have a 4 way system diy and 2 miniDSP 2x4hd will one lic work on both miniDSP modules Also if in future I switch to miniDSP flex can the lic be transferred. How does it work
Never heard of a mini DSP. Someone could make a video showing how to set up a very good quality one of those then show how the app works. I’m simply using the PEQ in my Eversolo 8 into Accuphase amp. Dirac seems ok but without a video showing how it all operates I won’t bother. I don’t even know if the Dirac app lets you adjust PEQ on the go.
PEQ is a very basic form of equalisation, Dirac is super advanced that allows you to manage the sound of the system far more comprehensive and accurate compared to PEQ and it works to improve the systems impulse response to improve clarity. The PEQ in the Eversolo is good I have used it a lot lately but what you can do with Dirac is more powerful
Does Dirac provide Head Room before it is making the corrections? Suppose a full scale signal before Dirac, it is possible that after the correction clipping is introduced... Can you help me with this question?
There cant be any clipping introduced by what Dirac does but the user can ask for too much from their system and you might hear that in different ways that resemsble clipping
@@PursuitPerfectSystem You mean clipping due to Amplifier running out of steam? I use miniDSP DDR24 and want to upgrade to miniDSP SHD but I don't want to harm my speakers... So Direct provide HeadRoom before making the corrections is that correct? Many THX
If you are sensible in your approach to using Dirac I dont see why you would ever damage your speakers and I dont know why there would be any difference in miniDSP models for this but I don't know maybe there is. I used the SHD studio with Wilson TuneTot and didnt damage them. Just be careful how much push you ask for in what regions.
@@PursuitPerfectSystem thanks for the explication there is a lot of gibberish on the internet and that is why I ask the question to a pro. I used the miniDSP with 802D3’s and Accuphase amp. The results before and after Dirac where super, dit some lifting and cutting, but got a much better sound afterwards. Even with the mediocre DAC of the miniDSP DDRC24. Much better results as with way better DAC’s without Dirac. Dirac rocks, thanks again.
@@PursuitPerfectSystem the issue for me there is the distance between the microphone at the listening position to the Mac which needs to be close to my DAC and amp that plays the tone sweeps. So it’s definitely not possible to use the laptop as the core only?
You possibly could use a different computer I am not sure. Worst ways use the other computer take the measurements save the file and then transfer it to your Mac mini and treat it the same
possibly but not easily, you might have to use a minidsp as the streamer and dirac live feeding digital into the atom if you can. that would be the only way
Hi Terry! This is a bit of a long shot but i gotta try something. Have you ever came across Dirac Live not integrating a sub at all? I have a situation where i got volume matching and measurements nicely done on my 2.1 system, heard the test tones from all 3 components and then proceeded to adjusting the filter graphs. After i export the filter and turn it on in BluOS (i have a NAD C 3050 LE), the sub is not in the mix. I double checked this by trying to increase lvl from the sub itself - nothing. When i turn Dirac off, the sub returns back into the mix normally. Any idea if i'm missing something or what could be the issue here? Thanks for all the good content and sorry for the long winded question! PS, i tried grouping all as 1 group and speakers + sub as separate groups - no dice, still the same result..
Sounds like a technical issue best to fire a technical support ticket to nad and Dirac as maybe there is an issue with the nad firmware and or the version of Dirac live you are using.
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Way ahead on you on that one. Got in touch with Dirac already and still no idea how to fix this. Still waiting on NAD's response. Thanks for the quick answer! Kinda reassuring to hear this from you as well.
Thinking about it, I had this once before doing a cal for a customer with an NAD M10 V2. The sub worked initially but then wouldn't come on. Try a factory reset of the NAD and load the settings and cal in again.
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Thanks for the tip! Did the reset and cal again. Still no dice. Without filters the sub works fine, as soon as i toggle one of the filters (i made the full 5) - no dice. Nothing from the sub. Will need to hear what NAD have to say.
@@PursuitPerfectSystem So the problem is solved! Got in touch with NAD and they graciously pointed out that there's been issues with Dirac 3.6.5 sub integration. So i downgraded to 3.4.4 as NAD suggested and did the cal again. It worked! Figured that this could be useful info for you too so i thought i'd share it here. :)
Great video, looking purely at methods 1&2, there's tons of options for 2 channel enthusiasts. There's also lots of options for full dolby atmos Dirac receivers (11+ channels) What would you recommend for an affordable 5.1 AV Dirac solution if you already have passive speakers?
For AV I would choose Arcam because of how they have integrated Dirac and how they allow you to calibrate and setup the AVR. It will be interesting to see what Marantz and Denon units are like next year when they become DL enabled
Can anyone answer this? I have a PS5 as a source going into a TV and then out from Optical in a fairly respectable 2.2 system, all seperates. Can you get Dirac, the full correction, without using whatever device's (mini dsp let's say) DAC? And, does it require constant laptop connection? Is it set and forget?
Everytime I use Dirac it's an infuriating time. From the PC not finding my Arcam on the network to volume levels being too low, even though the test signal through the speakers is near deafening. The complications of using subs is confusing as my Arcam only seems to allow a 2.1 set up even though I have a 2.2 system. It really is a minefield so if you're going to try and give it a go as a non techy and impatient listener like me, I advise a couple of whiskeys at hand.
I have calibrated four different arcams in four days, no issues at all with them and Dirac but yes it takes some experience to get the best out them. Often people get the workflow wrong and blame the system. Check your doing everything right and using the correct quality equipment as mentioned in the video
Dirac assists the user a lot but you dont want automated, automated means someone else makes the decision about the sound of the system, how can they possibly know what sound you want - automated can never work for this reason, Thats the reason there is such resistance to these types of solutions in the HiFi space because automated systems never get it right.

Hi Terry. Thank you for the video. Do you have experience with dirac in marantz cinema line of receivers?
Your vidéo is good. Dirac licensing system is highly complex and frustrating
Its not really but maybe it needs explaining what each product is and does
Great video Terry. Quick question about the MiniDSP. What's your experince with using its digital crossover vs the high level connection for subwoofers?
If its a REL sub I would use high level
Is that the new gryphon eos 2?Are you going to be doing a review for it.Thanks.
yes and yes
Hi Terry,
Awesome video.
The center frequency response 95-20,000 Hz (±3dB)
The Surround frequency response 100-20,000 Hz (±3dB)
Dirac set the crossovers to 70Hz for the front, center and surrounds?
Changing receiver, I thought about it but the expense is not insignificant...
Yes but there is no other way to properly integrate Dirac into an AV system, miniDSP is only for HiFi
Isn’t it counterproductive to digitize the sound signal from a turntable?
Just depends if your system sound better after Dirac and vinyl sounds better after it too as a result does it really matter
Any idea if my Nad m50.2 has Dirac??
Or am I wrong?
yeah sadly there is no miniDSP that is USB in and out which is a shame as it would be ideal for a lot of setups, but for a Hermes you could go usb into the miniDSP and AES or Coax out and into the Hermes and that would work
@@PursuitPerfectSystem thanks for advice. Too many to choose from. Which one will fit for me ?
Have a question that Dirac has not replied yet or they missed seeing my email. I have a 4 way system diy and 2 miniDSP 2x4hd will one lic work on both miniDSP modules
Also if in future I switch to miniDSP flex can the lic be transferred. How does it work
pretty sure with miniDSP the licence is with the unit as you dont purchase it separately so its very unlikely you can transfer it
Never heard of a mini DSP.
If you box clever you dont need to use the dacs in minidsp solutions just use them for dirac live and then you can use any dac you want
Terry, I use a Mac-Mini as my music source and player. Can I use a laptop to perform the room calibration and then send the file to the Mac-Mini?
In that instance you use the mac mini to do both
@@PursuitPerfectSystem the issue for me there is the distance between the microphone at the listening position to the Mac which needs to be close to my DAC and amp that plays the tone sweeps. So it’s definitely not possible to use the laptop as the core only?
I have that same issue, I use a powered USB extension cable to solve it :)
@@PursuitPerfectSystem great idea 👍
You possibly could use a different computer I am not sure. Worst ways use the other computer take the measurements save the file and then transfer it to your Mac mini and treat it the same
Hello. Is it possible to use it in all in one units like Naim Atom? Sorry for my ignorance. Thanks.
possibly but not easily, you might have to use a minidsp as the streamer and dirac live feeding digital into the atom if you can. that would be the only way
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Thanks. I am from Puerto Rico. Love your videos.
Hi, Terry can you tell me if audiophile optimizer 3 works with windows 11.
I am sorry I dont know, best to mail them and ask
@@PursuitPerfectSystem yes I have emailed highend audio pc. But know answer from them.
maybe try on the Jplay forum normally people on there know everything
There's also lots of options for full dolby atmos Dirac receivers (11+ channels)
What would you recommend for an affordable 5.1 AV Dirac solution if you already have passive speakers?
For AV I would choose Arcam because of how they have integrated Dirac and how they allow you to calibrate and setup the AVR. It will be interesting to see what Marantz and Denon units are like next year when they become DL enabled
Can anyone answer this? I have a PS5 as a source going into a TV and then out from Optical in a fairly respectable 2.2 system, all seperates. Can you get Dirac, the full correction, without using whatever device's (mini dsp let's say) DAC? And, does it require constant laptop connection? Is it set and forget?
Laptop is only for config.
You need extra hardware to add Dirac into system that don’t have any component with build-in dirac.
@Is3 thanks!
Does it mean Dirac cannot be used on Denon x8500h
I dont know but it doesnt look like it at the moment
Please how do I add direct live to a 2 channel tube system?
I think you'd need a preamp/streamer with Dirac like the NAD C 658. That's the only one I can think of.
it depends on your system and how its built but method 2 using a miniDSP could be a way to do it as its the most flexible
I use an integrated tube amp with a minidsp flex between the streamer and amp. Works fine.
@@richardvdbogaard would a miniDSP DDRC-24 work too? I use a streamer with in-built DAC and a tube amp.
I'm one of the idiots who contacted Terry without having anything in my system to use Dirac.🙄
Not an idiot Gary it obviously hasn't been made clear enough before, I get lots of the same enquiries mate so dont worry about it
Pitty Dirac needs an expert like the video maker to make it work. Always assumed it was automated.
Dirac assists the user a lot but you dont want automated, automated means someone else makes the decision about the sound of the system, how can they possibly know what sound you want - automated can never work for this reason, Thats the reason there is such resistance to these types of solutions in the HiFi space because automated systems never get it right.
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Thanks for your answer. Still I assumed the Dirac could be used without an expert being involved.
Its the same as doing DIY, you could try and fit your own kitchen but a professional will likely do a much better job
