  • Abraham Lincoln worked with those who hated him and violently disagreed with him. But how exactly did he do it? NPR's Steve Inskeep joins CBS News to discuss his new book about the former president - and the lessons Americans can learn to navigate political divisions.

My father (a newspaper editor and old-school journalist) taught me that I should always be willing to listen to someone else's opinion, even if I am 100% certain I disagree with them. UNFORTUNATELY, it no longer works. My attempts to listen and then respond with my conservative POV is met with ad hominem attacks and irrational declarations that I am racist and a hate mongering MAGA extremist, when all I'm attempting to do is stop the warmongers and secure my nation's borders ~ A Vietnam Veteran

Ive personally found, being more of a center-left person, that people on the left and right of me can vehemently disagree with me on a variety of issues. I try to find areas of similarity and nuance, focus on what issues need to be solved rather than starting with how to solve them. Avoid making common phrases that carry a lot of political baggage as it can trigger a defensive response if charity isn’t given.
In general, forums online where you aren’t actually physically talking is also just generally a poor choice. Tone, facial expressions, intimacy with the person your discussing with are super important, which we cant get with online media. We always like to assign beliefs to people based on labels, but individuals are hardly ever purely right or left leaning on every issue.
Just my perspective on it, from a French immigrant who now has American citizenship.

@@Teebs131 Couldn't agree more and I'm generally conservative, tired of the wars and spending trillions but with ears wide o0pen to all concerns.
I think you hit on a major snag in our attempts as people to build bridges and restore conversation are battling literally, kids at computers using AI to created 'user accounts' that are undetectable from actual US Citizens.
Worse, these are not all just kids and they can be non-English speakers anywhere in the world.
Online people are often who we seem. I trust this entire conversation is because no one here is getting pointlessly emotional or leveling ad hominems. those are usually the giveaways.

Lincoln honored my heritage. Listened and learned from all sides. A true (liberal democratic Republican)

Problem is, Lincoln was arguing against people who fundamentally have difference of opinion when it comes to slavery.
Today, we are arguing against people who fundamentally reject reality.

    • @dw2793

I'm seeing a problem of people convinced others are rejecting reality, but only know of these people through electronic media; rarely if ever in person.
But, one kid online, today, using Artificial Intelligence can post as dozens or even hundreds of different individuals and we have zero means of detecting it.
All the crazy, unrealistic folks you believe are other US Citizens might all be the same kid and that kid could be in Beijing or Moscow.
      Safe bet, he/she probably is.

As is the other political party. Unfortunately both of you have forgotten that the basic tenet of democracy is a willingness to compromise....

Fun interview but its pointless to speculate on a dead president from well over 100 years ago would do. The present is a different world and we don't know how that would change his views or actions.
The answers to how to address our issues are right in front of us but the will to change isn't there. Not until we the people take back control of our political system from the two party duopoly. We'll see a difference when voters feel like they're being heard.

Blame 60 Minutes. It’s a good show, but it was the first news program to generate high profits and ultimately changed the course of journalism.

What I learned from Abraham Lincoln was that he was more than willing to sacrifice the minorities to appease the radicals.

Some of Lincoln's decisions (most notably letting slavery exist in states that hadn't seceded) seem tone-deaf to us now. But Lincoln's priority was reunifying the country. The human rights of the slaves themselves were alien concepts to most of the white men who were voting back then.

As a strong conservative, I've come to learn that most of the people we think are Dems online are probably neither democrat nor even US Citizens.
AI that can translate so perfectly from any major language into American English is off-the-shelf, readily available.
You could well be listening to what poses as a Democrat living next door who is, in fact, some Chinese or Russian kid.

If President Lincoln were Alive Today in 2023, will say he condeems public schools for putting Americans to be Learning Disabled and Last in Education in all 50 states Lincoln would go on to remind about his 2nd inaugeral adress Will make Update to that in a speech how Millions of Americans are being left out, locked out of what is suppose to be a Free and Appropriate Education The laws on education is not what the Founding Fathers of the US Constituion would be for Would go on to say when you do this to Americans its not better than what Southern Democrats did as a Party Now your doing this to dumb down the White people for what your democrat ancestors did 160 years ago Special Education of Learning Disabled has so Falsly and Wrongly Accused American Students Long Enough The Republican Party use to be My Party i surely had been forgotten about after the 1970s when my party decided to subject the Middle Class to unconstitutional laws to the Rehibilitation Act that says they can put Able Students in the same class room, same federal law Who need a law that says they Learning Disabled can maintain a 12 year education without a fraud iep That is what My Unalienable Rights is about, Happiness was for Americans to reach there full potiential We take if Lincoln was Alive Today Dinos and Rinos would pass a law to take down Lincolns Monument same for the Statue Of Liberty President Lincoln would be on President Trumps side today Would maby say he would make a great lawlyer had he not been a Businessman Tycon

    Think about your choice:
Are you willing to follow one man over the "rule of law of the country"
    the courts,
    free press,
national security treaties, and law enforcement. MAGA is not the GOP I miss the GOP.
