Of course I am familiar with Useful Charts great reviews of royal families, and I have wondered why it is so frequent that royal families die out and are replaced by other dynasties. I had little doubt that Lee and Lincoln were not related. Lee is a very very common name both in the new world and in the UK.
I was listening to a vintage recording of the great 19th century opera singer Adelina Patti made in about 1900 -then I read that Adelina had sung at the funeral of Abraham Lincoln's son (mid 19th century)I felt a kind of physical connection when I realized I was listening to the voice of a woman who had sung at an event so crucial to Lincoln's life.
It is crazy to me that even Lincoln, who we think of as the impoverished nobody who worked his way up through hard work and virtue, was still fairly closely related to men with significant political power before him. How much it helped his career, I have no idea; it’s just like, if *any* president was going to be free from the shadow of nepotism, you would’ve thought it was Lincoln, but… nope.
i get you. I'm not second cousins twice removed from the governors of two states but in the early 19th century I figure it would have been difficult to be completely cut off from wealth or power by family connection. There were only 7 million people in the whole nation when Lincoln was born. With the current craze for NEPO-babies, it is interesting to see even in just a small part, if famous people had some bit of fame in their family tree. My grandfather was a pretty big deal at a huge construction company but according to his obituary, my mother and us grandkids didnt exist. Yeah he was a d***.
I have to quibble with your use of the term nepotism in this case; there is absolutely no evidence suggesting that his somewhat distant cousins in any way influenced his attainment of any political office. You might as well claim that Tom Hanks’ stardom is nepotism, due to his relationship to Lincoln.
Franklin Roosevelt's wife Eleanor was the only daughter of Theodore Roosevelt's brother Elliot Roosevelt. So had he lived longer, Elliott was not only Theodore's brother, he would also have been Franklin Delano Roosevelt's father-in-law. Eleanor Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt's famous first child, daughter Alice were first cousins but apparently did not like each other. Alice Roosevelt Longworth lived all the way until 1980 passing away at age 96. Eleanor's father Elliott was apparently a chronic, severe alcoholic who died at a young age of the effects of the disease in the early 1900's when he was in his mid-30's. His death affected both his daughter Eleanor and Theodore Roosevelt tremendously over the course of the rest of their lives. Theodore Roosevelt also had two sisters, Eleanor's aunts who helped her when she was growing up.
@@michaelverbakel7632I was surprised when I found that out when doing my own family tree (I'm distantly related to the Roosevelts). I always wondered why FDR called Theodore "Uncle Teddy" when they are 5th cousins. Now I know why.
I've always heard that Jimmy Carter and June Carter Cash were distant relations and that the both were actually related to Elvis Presley. Also, that the Carter family in general has many relations in the prominent families of the American South. It would be interesting to delve into in detail.
Don’t forget the Harrisons who were grandfather/grandson. William Henry Harrison’s father also was also a signer of the Deceleration of Independence so even though their obscure Presidents there’s a lot of history there.
Yes there are living relatives of the Adam's. In fact, their daughter name was Quincy. There was a big write in local paper when her father died telling the family history.

I just found out a couple of days ago that Abraham Lincoln is my sixth cousin three times removed through the Lincoln line, so finding your channel is great!
I vote for the Roosevelt family next!! I have a (non-blood) family connection to Abraham Lincoln: he was my great-great-great-grandmother’s divorce lawyer from her 1st husband, who deserted her, allowing her to remarry (and thus for my great-great-grandmother to be born). Also, I used to date a man with the last name Lincoln, who bore a strong resemblance to the 16th president; he told me his family were distant relative, but not direct descendants.
Well Lincoln was supposed to take after his mother in looks. He looks nothing like his father in any way. Unfortunately Nancy Hanks died before photography and there are no surviving portraits of her.
Can you please do "the Lees of ol' Virginia"? (Bonus points if you include a clip from "1776"). I'm related to that family and would say hi to all my distant cousins in your comments!
Lee's on abe's father's & mother's side. Lee wife of teddy's Roosevelt's 1st wife. Lee on jackie Kennedys mother's side.. Please once & for all clear this mess up.
My best friend Elijah northcutt who died in 2020 from suicide he was 25 years old. He was actually related to President Abraham lincoln, his mom did a search of their ancestry and his mom is the niece of Mary Todd lincoln. And my best friend's mom looks exactly like her. So his mother accepted me as her second son, since I was best friends with Elijah for a long time since like 7th grade. And as we became adults and things like that, his mom said that I could call Abraham Lincoln my uncle too because she accepted me as her second son even though I have parents but she accepted me as her second son.
You should definitely do Florence Nightingale's tree, one of my friends is related to her (not directly obviously). It would be sick as her tree is more politicians than medicine
Why would your friend “obviously” NOT be a direct descendant of a woman? I’m a female and a direct descendant of all my primary ancestors particularly the females. Please explain. Thanks.
I haven't confirmed it myself, but my mom did family tree study when I was younger and claims that I am a direct descendent of a sibling of Mary Todd Lincoln's! I always found it to be a fun little bit of family history. Definitely want to do some of the family tree research myself eventually to confirm what my parents have told me about my family's past and see if I can find any interesting tidbits myself
So I been on a family tree hunt and did a DNA test and sure enough I am related to Abraham Lincoln he is my 6th cousin 7x removed. It is through Obadiah Holmes he was my 12 great grandfather. now I have been finding more and more that family kept secret and I am trying to bring to light.
I would like to see that of John and John Quincy Adams since I'm distantly related to them. I think something like 5th cousins 8 times removed. I'm not really sure. I just know his line of the family stayed in Massachusetts, while my line moved gradually westward, and we both inherited the Adams name from the same man, Henry Adams, who came to the New World in around the 1630s.
I believe my Dad told me when I was young that my sister and I(so obviously him too) were related to the Adams'. I have no idea if there is any truth to that as I know of no basis for such a connection, but I guess it would be cool to know if one had some verifiable relationship to a president.
@@davidhunt6508 There was family history of my line of the family that was compiled and put into book form in the early 70s called Ancestors and Descendants of Jeremiah Adams. If you can find that book you might have a link to the family. I've also heard through word of mouth that the Adams presidents may be related to the legendary "Grizzly" Adams as well as the actress Raquel Welch, but I admit that last one came from a dubious source.
I'd once done research on John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams descendants till today's generation a long time ago. I remember the present generation of John Adams descendants are multimillionaires and are married to other aristocratic families of the earth. (4/2/23)
I wouldn't mind seeing Bill Clinton considering the fact his biological father died before he was born and seeing the history of his side of the family
I'd like to see Thomas Jeffersons family tree next, I know that he's got some connections to the Randolph and Isham families of Virginia, and the Randolph family is the royalty of Central VA. I also wonder if there might be connections to other VA aristocratic clans like the Lees (a family tree of Gen. Lee and Gen. Grant would be awesome too!)
Would you like to add to the mystery? Abraham Lincolns mother lived and worked for the family of Abraham Enloe before Abraham Lincoln was born, it's always been "known" in my mothers family that Abe Lincoln was the illegitimate son of Abraham Enloe, thus the first name. After Abes mother got pregnant, Mrs. Enloe had a fit and old Abraham had to run the pregnant mom to be off, so she met Mr. Lincoln. Which coincides with them being improvished and had a hard time making it mentioned in the video at about 4 minutes in.
This was indeed very interesting and certainly informative. Very well done. One critisim if I may....... The popular female name, Mamie is not pronounced Mammy but "May-Me", as in Mamie Eisenhour or Mamie VanDoran.
It would be cool a conjoined family tree of the Two Roosevelts. I also think as a curiosity that Bill Weld, republican candidate who lost the primaries to Trump in 2020 is married to a desceandant of Teddy, so there's already an important connection there.
As a dutchie I wanna see president van Buren's tree. I think he was the only US president that wasnt raised with english as his first language, but Dutch.
Hi Matt. There is an interesting story about Abe Lincoln possibly being the illegitimate son of Abraham Enloe of Ocuna Lufta (near Bryson City, NC) in Western NC. Lincoln's mother Sarah Hanks worked in the Enloe home and was impregnated by Enloe. Hanks was young and when the pregnancy was discovered, Enloe's wife had Nancy shipped back to her family home in Rutherford County, NC, where Abe was born. The town supposedly has a marker to this effect. Just an interesting tidbit to make your head explode. If you get a minute, google it. There are a few different sources on this. Otherwise, I really enjoyed this video.
Yes! I’m from NC and my family has lived in that area since the late 1700’s. Locals have always talked of this as if it were fact, not rumor. I’ve seen pictures of one of Abraham Enloe’s sons who had shockingly similar facial features to Abe Lincoln. I was a bit surprised that it didn’t come up in this video and also wondered if that DNA evidence mentioned had proved something either way.
Sir good job. My mother is from the Henning TN/Dyersburg area in the northwest TN area close to KY border. When I came out that area as a kid. Residents in that area attested his great grandma was a black slave in his mother's side of his family. This is why his features look different.
I’m related to Abe (2nd cousin, 6 times removed). My great great grandmother is Jean Marie Hanks. Her father is Jean Baptiste Hanks, his father his Jean Hanks, son of Lucy and Charles.
Thank you for your video I am a relative of Abraham Lincoln on his mother's side. And also through her mother's side which I know the origins of her mother is a little more complicated. But also interesting because now I find out that I'm also related to George Clooney who grew up and whose father was the news anchor in the city close to where my family comes from. Thanks again
Would love you to go back further into the Hanks line. I have Hanks from Oxford UK in my tree who maybe possibly related to Nancy Hanks family. This was so interesting. Thank you. 👏

Love your channel. Rutherford Hayes was very into genealogy himself, but I believe he didn't get very far on his own paternal line. I'd love to see if you could figure it out.
Hello. My dad's mother was a Lee. His dna test has him related to Lincoln as a 3c2r and 1c4r from Boone. They lived near each other & traveled thru the Cumberland gap together. They were all related.
Old Ship Church is in Hingham Ma. I set up a tour of it in 2019 for a family history trip... if you get a chance go see it. The arrangement of the pews/ boxes have changed over the years but the timbers of the roof are original.
Levi Lincoln Sr. was also at one point the largest landowner in Worcester, MA. His son Levi Jr. would (among the other state and federal offices he held) serve as Worcester's first mayor when it became a city in 1848. And both of their graves can be found in Worcester's Rural Cemetery (which also serves as the final resting place of several other Massachusetts governors and members of congress).
Harry Truman please! Also Zachary Taylor is interesting as his daughter was the first wife of Jefferson Davis and Taylor is Half 3rd cousin once removed to Robert E. Lee through Taylors paternal grandmother Elizabeth Lee.
I Would love to see The Bush and Roosevelt family trees, they seem to be very Interesting, and maybe even discover who they're surpirsingly related to.
There are still the stories of former president George Bush Sr. wife Barbara Bush being a direct descendant of a former U.S. president before Lincoln, Franklin Pierce. Pierce was Barbara Bush's maiden name.
@@michaelverbakel7632That's very Interesting, I knew already that Pierce was her last name, but I never thought of her being a direct decendant or related to Franklin Pierce, but if that's correct, Then George W. Bush would be the only president privileged to be the decendant of 2 U.S. presidents.
Agree. The way Matt pronounced it is a different word altogether, one that had its own connotation in the slave-owning South. I do not believe this was on purpose, but an honest mistake.
@UsefulCharts As a black man growing up I’ve been told that Abe Lincoln was of mixed race as was passing as white. I was told that his description was that of a swarthy complexion fellow. I also found a UA-camr with a video of “ people in history you didn’t know was black” that said Abe Lincoln had a letter he wrote to a maiden in remembrance where he described himself as a “black” fellow.
Samuel Lincoln Jr. was from Hingham, in Norfolk, England and settled in Hingham, Plymouth Colony in 1637 (not Massachusetts Bay Colony). My ancestors, John and Frances Farrar/Farrow (9th great-grandparents), also from Hingham, England, settled there two years earlier when it was still called Bare Cove (the name was changed to Hingham that year). Abraham Lincoln is my 5th cousin 5x removed, but our common ancestors are my other 9th great-grandparents Abraham Jones and Sarah Ann (Whitman) Jones, parents of Sarah Whitman Jones, who married Mordecai Lincoln.
Hi. My dad's DNA says he is 3c2r from Lincoln & 1c4r from Boone. My father's mother was a Lee. They were from the south(Kentucky). I think 7-8 were orphaned and a preacher & his wife(Elshmann) took them all in.(around the Cincinnati area. One of those orphans moved to central Ohio & is how my grandmother's grandparent is from.
Do Ulysses S Grant! I'm biased because we're 6th cousins 6x removed, but also he was distant cousins (5th, maybe?) with John Brown, the abolitionist (and my 5th cousin 6x removed) I doubt anyone in either family knew that, but Ulysses and Brown's fathers knew each other and worked together. They were related through the first pair of Grants of Ulysses's line in America, Mathew and Priscilla, whom Ulysses mentions in his memoirs. Ulysses descended from their son Samuel, while John Brown (and I) descend from their daughter Priscilla. Ulysses was also related to the Roosevelts, as one of his great-grandmothers was Susannah Delano. Her 1st cousin Ephraim was an ancestor of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
next can you do either John Tylers or Thomas Jefferson’s family trees next and I am asking because I am interested in Thomas Jefferson’s family tree because one of his descendants named Thomas Garland Jefferson was one of the cadets of the Virginia military institute to be killed in the battle of new market and I am interested in John Tyler’s family tree not just because he has a grandchild living but I am interested in his family tree because when I was watching my favorite movie Gettysburg a line in the movie caught my attention and this line in the movie takes place before Pickett’s charge and in the line Brigadier General Lewis armistead is explaining to colonel Arthur Lyon Fremantle of the Coldstream guards that there is a lot of people with famous ancestors and people with famous background taking part in the charge and in the line armistead says” The boy over there with the color guard that’s Robert Tyler Jones. His grandfather was president of the United States.” And when I looked up Robert Tyler Jones I realized that he was a real person and a grandson of John Tyler because his mother is the eldest daughter of John Tyler.
Admittedly, I would love you to cover Theodore Roosevelt's Scottish ancestors, the Barnhills and Craigs. There seems to be some confusion about the parentage of Captain William Craig. That line, if correct, has some very interesting people in it.
You know what I think would be an interesting topic to cover? I think you should go over some of the royal family’s illegitimate children to see whom it would potentially lead to had they not been illegitimate. Fun fact, King James IV of Scotland had about 7-9 illegitimate children.
I know an illegitimate decendant of Edward VII he looks like the royal family. I think it would be very hard to trace some of the illegitimate children due to their birth records being sealed and being raised in adoptive families away from the spotlight.
There’s a good chance Lincoln’s grandfather knew Daniel Boone. The two families lived near each other in Berks County PA and there was a marriage between members of the families. Boone left PA when his grandfather was about 6, but it’s possible they would’ve met there.

You might as well claim that Tom Hanks’ stardom is nepotism, due to his relationship to Lincoln.
trying to figure out which Job Abraham Lincoln got because of family connections, ?? Now appointments he made is a different story,
@@JeanieD all in all, it’s kind of sad he, Lincoln, is related to two creepy liberals. Doesn’t speak highly of his mothers side, lol.

Interesting, thank you! Grant's family tree would be fascinating.
You should do a family tree of Franklin Rosevelt which would also connect to Theodor Rosevelt as well.
😅😅😅😅😅😢😢😢😮
@@michaelverbakel7632I was surprised when I found that out when doing my own family tree (I'm distantly related to the Roosevelts). I always wondered why FDR called Theodore "Uncle Teddy" when they are 5th cousins. Now I know why.
I studied out the connect between Teddy and FDR. You have to go back like 10 generations to find their common ancestor.
I've always heard that Jimmy Carter and June Carter Cash were distant relations and that the both were actually related to Elvis Presley. Also, that the Carter family in general has many relations in the prominent families of the American South. It would be interesting to delve into in detail.
There is a book written about Jimmy Carters ancestors (by his son Jeff)
Definitely do a tree of Elvis Presley. He had a female Jewish ancestor.
You could knock out two presidents with one family tree if you did the Bush's, Adams and perhaps the Roosevelts.
Richard Nixon's daughter married Eisenhower's grandson.
Don’t forget the Harrisons who were grandfather/grandson. William Henry Harrison’s father also was also a signer of the Deceleration of Independence so even though their obscure Presidents there’s a lot of history there.
To be honest it would be better if we DIDN’T knock out any presidents (except for possibly Donald Trump).
For being the first non WASP president, I think a video about Martin Van Buren’s family would be very interesting
Indeed. And other Dutch familys to. Rosevelt etc schuylers although not actually presidents
That would make of Abraham Lincoln the second non-WASP POTUS, then. Due to his Melungeon ethnicity.

I'd love to see that, too, because some of my ancestors are somehow mixed up in the Van Buren line.

I'd like to see the family tree of John Adams & John Quincy Adams, and if they have surviving descendants, especially famous ones!
Yes there are living relatives of the Adam's. In fact, their daughter name was Quincy. There was a big write in local paper when her father died telling the family history.
I'd once done research on John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams descendants till today's generation a long time ago. I remember the present generation of John Adams descendants are multimillionaires and are married to other aristocratic families of the earth. (4/2/23
I’m his 7th cousin 7x removed.
Yes, their descendants are alive; one was my high school counselor: John Quincy Adams Doolittle.
I heard singer Bryan Adams is related to them
The creator of Adventure Time, Pendleton Ward, is also a distant relation to Lincoln. Which is funny as Lincoln actually appears in the show.
I would really love to see the Roosevelt family, but if you cover them, the Adams or the Bushes you can tick off 2 presidents in 1 video 😄
William Henry Harrison and Benjamin Harrison as well.
I'd like to see James A. Garfield as the next one you do. Fun fact, James Garfield's great-great grandson created Magic the Gathering.
Interesting. James Abram Garfield, is the 5th great grand son of the Emigrant Edward Garfield and Rebecca Johnson, and I am the 9th great grandson thru their daughter Rebecca Garfield that married A Mix(t)er, that line stay Mix(t)er until My great Grandmother married a Bowman If I remember correct James A Garfield is my 6th cousin 4 gens removed.
I just found out a couple of days ago that Abraham Lincoln is my sixth cousin three times removed through the Lincoln line, so finding your channel is great!
Hi there! My father is 3c2r from Lincoln's & 1c4r from Boone. Thru the Lee line
My relationship is similar - 5th Cousin, 4 times removed through Samuel Lincoln's daughter, Rebecca Lincoln. Good to meet you, cousins! 😉
I vote for the Roosevelt family next!!
I have a (non-blood) family connection to Abraham Lincoln: he was my great-great-great-grandmother’s divorce lawyer from her 1st
husband, who deserted her, allowing her to remarry (and thus for my great-great-grandmother to be born).
Also, I used to date a man with the last name Lincoln, who bore a strong resemblance to the 16th president; he told me his family were distant relative, but not direct descendants.
I don't know why, but I find this really funny.
Well Lincoln was supposed to take after his mother in looks. He looks nothing like his father in any way. Unfortunately Nancy Hanks died before photography and there are no surviving portraits of her.
I watch all of your videos, but this right here is my type of history
excellent! I want to see Dwight Eisenhower's family tree next!
Great vid! I think the pic used for Daniel Boone is actually Davy Crockett.
😅Fess Parker played both. Daniel Boone's clothes were more tailored. Davy's looked like he brain tanned the deerskin himself.
Please do Jefferson! His relations with Hemings (his wife's cousin, or something like that) are certainly a fascinating story.
Hemings was his wife's half sister and servant.

Can you please do "the Lees of ol' Virginia"? (Bonus points if you include a clip from "1776"). I'm related to that family and would say hi to all my distant cousins in your comments!
The Lee family is very interesting.
It’s always cool to see how presidents are connected, so the Adams, Harrisons, Bushes, and Roosevelts are all warranted for sure!
Thanks.
I think he's just referring to the fact that Florence Nightingale did not have any children.
I just found out my 3rd great grandfather was related to Abraham Lincoln in some way so I am trying to find out more..... History is so fascinating.
Abraham Lincolns mother lived and worked for the family of Abraham Enloe before Abraham Lincoln was born,
it's always been "known" in my mothers family that Abe Lincoln was the illegitimate son of Abraham Enloe, thus the first name.

Obviously the Roosevelts. They are a seriously old American family. It would be a big tree probably going back to New Amsterdam, Virginia and Plymouth
What would have been REALLY crazy is if there was a connection between Lincoln and an actor who played him...

My Grandmother is from Henning Tn. As well
I’m related to Abe (2nd cousin, 6 times removed).
Thank you. 👏

Bush would be the only president privileged to be the decendant of 2 U.S. presidents.
Until recently John Tyler's grandson was still alive, remarkable since Tyler himself was born in 1790. That might be an interesting line to cover.

Mamie Lincoln's first name is likely pronounced "May-mee."
That's just a myth. There are plenty of white people with swarthy complexions.

My 15th cousin 2 times removed. Good ol' Abe.

I’d imagine Mamie Lincoln’s first name was pronounced MAY-mee rather than MAH-mee - like Mamie Eisenhower.
next can you do either John Tylers or Thomas Jefferson’s family trees next and I am asking because I am interested in Thomas Jefferson’s family tree because one of his descendants named Thomas Garland Jefferson was one of the cadets of the Virginia military institute to be killed in the battle of new market and I am interested in John Tyler’s family tree not just because he has a grandchild living but I am interested in his family tree because when I was watching my favorite movie Gettysburg a line in the movie caught my attention and this line in the movie takes place before Pickett’s charge and in the line Brigadier General Lewis armistead is explaining to colonel Arthur Lyon Fremantle of the Coldstream guards that there is a lot of people with famous ancestors and people with famous background taking part in the charge and in the line armistead says” The boy over there with the color guard that’s Robert Tyler Jones.
Thanks for a great history lesson 👍
