  • Soken is a musical GENIUS! It was so cool to hear something in Final Fantasy 14 that is so different from "Flow" and "Tomorrow and Tomorrow" but still have it be equally as amazing! It takes talent to compose in so many different genres. I absolutely loved this song, and it is still stuck in my head. Hope you enjoy my reaction to this!
Please show love to the original video as well: • "Scream" (Hegemone x A...
    Composer- Masayoshi Soken
    Vocals- Akino

As you adventure through Eorzea, the absolute genius of Soken will grow. Each expansion, he knocks it out of the park.

for real. that was especially from shadowbringers for me when I thought that his music couldn't be possibly better... but every single time with new patch I thought "he did it again". soken is a genius

Soken was the melody composer, but this arrangement was done by Takafumi Imamura, with lyrics by Koji Fox

It's actually 2 different boss fights that use the same song. In the boss fight before these two you hear a non-vocal version of this song called "Silent Scream" so they build you up with the instrumental version in the previous fight then hit you with this.
Also the lyrics mention "here by lions" which is a reference to the final boss music of the previous tier in the raid series (each expansion's raid series is 12 bosses released in 3 tier of 4 bosses each). The title of the track is "Hic Svnt Leones" which is Latin for "Here be lions" which was used by (real life) ancient cartographers to label uncharted lands. It's also cool that they spelled it as "SVNT" instead of "SUNT" because in the original Latin "V" and "U" were both written as "V".
FF14's very particular with it's naming and they dig deep into real life history and myths to reference, and do so in a way that you don't have to understand the reference to understand the story but it adds an extra layer to discover.

Not just the lyrics reference, but Soken's love of leitmotif from Hic as well

When the fights of ffxiv are released they are intentionally made in sync with the music. They don't always stay that way, power creep and all that, but that's the original intention haha

The extreme and savage fights also sync up to the timing of your abilities, so for example when the team has to spread for a big attack, the dragoon will likely have his big jump attack ready to close the gap after moving out of melee range. This plus the way the music vibes with the fight, the team did a really good job with the way battles feel.

Not necessarily. Only for fights where there's a phase change without a checkpoint which is usually just Ultimates, and only the second and onwards phase do they time it with the music. Because you can't control when a group is going to pull, it's not like the music only starts when you start a pull, so it usually won't match up (not intentionally atleast).

Night In the Brume from Heavensward is by far my favorite non-vocal track. Worth an offline listen. Great piano work.

Your reaction pretty well sums up mine when hearing Scream for the first time, lol. I was just progressively more and more blown away by it. Soken's metal music is GOD TIER. Dude's favorite band is Rage Against the Machine and it shows lol.
Btw the instrumental version, "Silent Scream," is REALLY good too. It has more of a retro-opera vibe.

Jip. Welcome to the Soken Fanclub. This Guy is on another Level - personally i think, he is some sort of an Alien from the Soundgalaxy far beyond the reaches of our Science - but a genius comes close too :D

If you like this one I think you should check out FFXIV “To The Edge” also by Soken, he wrote this while he was battling cancer before he beat it! It’s an incredibly special song to the community.
Also I’d personally like to recommend “Flow Together” by Soken that is the battle theme to the slower version “Flow”

Ravana's themes (Trial boss fight, happen to have phase 2 songs that can change the feel of the fight) The Hand that Gives the Rose and Unbending Steel are another great listen as at the time it was new (2015) it was so different from things before, while now it's just one song in a sea of countless massively different and enjoyable songs.
Edit: Also you will see Soken a lot as he is the main composter for ff14. He is a mad man that makes things that should feel odd just work for his songs, it's wild. Oh and the fights are often built to line things up with a song should the group being on par for the content so seeing attacks land at down points or rising points in songs happen a lot.

Heyyy, I was thinking about suggesting this one and I see you're already checking it out!
I wasn't 100% sure how you'd feel about the other genres of music. I do suggest "To the Edge" again, another boss fight song he did.
As for more variety/songs that sound quite different from one another, "A Long Fall" is memed for how hard it is to not bop your head when you hear it. Other songs that sound quite different are "Dedicated to Moonlight" (fantastic violin) and for more Japanese insturmentals and lyrics there's "Sunrise" and "Wayward Daughter" for a good fusion (Be warned that Wayward Daughter has some extremely spoilery cutscenes at the start and end of the video, the kind that might be hard to forget even lacking context.)
Also, while they're not my cup of tea, Good King Moggle Mog XII's theme and "What Angel Wakes Me" are both very different as well. King Mog particularly sounds very similar to "This Is Halloween" from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
And with their NieR collaboration, they made music that combined elements of Nier's and Final Fantasy's motifs. "Kainé (Final Fantasy Main Theme Version)" even manages to fit in notes of Drakengard.
Every single song I mention in this comment sounds dramatically different from each other, and are all composed by Masahiro Soken. (with Keichiro Okabe having done the original NieR tracks). His talents are ridiculous. The well of FFXIV music goes on for miles my friend. It did win a Guinness world record for most original music tracks in a video game.... before promptly losing it to Runescape because they actually have way more :(

I haven't seen any sheetmusic for the song, but the guitar parts sounds pretty simple actually. So if you ever do start to learn to play, you'd probably be able to learn this one pretty early.

Personally I like both composers, but this song is one that I dislike quite a bit. Considering the majority of the music I was expecting better. This sounds like pure teen angst and it shows considering everybody compares it to that one band
