Hello! I wanted to share my experience of shipping my bike (Honda Highness CB350) through Indian Railways from Pune to Ludhiana, the closest railway station to Chandigarh. Since I handled everything on my own, I wanted to let you know how easy it is to parcel your bike and provide some tips to consider.
I will explain the process, charges, and necessary documents required for bike parcelling. It's a straightforward and simple procedure, and you won't need any agents to assist you.

    Nice Explanation Bro.
Me n my friends are planning same journey to leh from jammu and thinking of transporting bikes through pune station.
Q1.- We have four bikes and we want to transport it through pune we also have a confirmed ticket for the same journey from pune to jammu for 4 people of 3AC
So do we book bike as a parcel or as a luggage which option is better for bike safety ? The irctc website is showing rs766 charges for standard parcel of bike and rs 2757 for luggage option so which option is safer for bike ?
And how was your experience ? Does your bike occur any damage after all that good packing of bike ?

Thank you for your comment. Let me clarify a few things here:
      - There is a small difference between parcel and luggage. Parcel means you will travel in the same train with your bike, then it will be considered as a parcel.
      - Luggage means you won't be traveling in the same train with your bike.
      - So, in your case, as you already have a confirmed ticket, then your bike will be considered as a parcel, and it will travel with you. When you get down at Jammu Station, you can collect your bike immediately. Make sure to attach a confirmed ticket copy with the booking form. It is mandatory for railway staff to give priority to parcels over luggage.
      - Suppose there are many bikes waiting, so your bike will get priority over others because you will be traveling in the same train with your bike.
      - Charges are the same for parcels as well as luggage. For 350cc bikes, it costs around 3500 rupees approximately, depending on your bike's valuation.
      - My experience wasn't bad; my bike was completely fine, and there were not a single scratch or dent on it, but it differs. You can't be sure about this.
      - Packaging of a bike plays a very important role here. I would suggest if you can arrange some external professional packaging at Pune station instead of going for local 550 rupees packing. It will cost you more bucks, but it will be much better option. Also do not over spend on the bike packaging keep some cap.
      - Also, do not add any box inside the packaging; in some cases, it gets lost. As you are already traveling in the same train carry whatever other loose packages with you.
I hope this response helps you. All the very best for your upcoming ride. Let me know if you need any other information. I would love to help you.

Very informative. I thought it would be easy carrying on train but this was painful. Disappointing IR courier service. Next time I will wrap whole by my own and hop on.
    Thanks Chetan.

Hi bro, can we book a bike parcel on the same day of the journey? ?
As im travelling from other city to Pune to catch the jehlum express.
If so how many hours before i need to reach the booking counter on the same day of journey???

Hey I'm not sure, but it totally depends on how many parcel bookings are already in queue. If you are lucky enough then your bike will get loaded. Pune Junction is a very busy railway station. AFAIK you can leave your bike at least 1 day before the train departure. I would suggest you to take the confirmation from the right resource.

I'm not sure, but you can visit during nirmal official hours. Also for taking bike deliveries there is one counter which runs for 24 hrs.

Useful info and nice video. I (from Pune) am planning to start my Ladakh ride (full circuit) from Jammu to avoid summer heat of Chandigarh in the first week of July. If that doesn't work than start from Chandigarh. I've done to train booking in two trains (S Kranti & Jhelam) to be on safer side. I have couple questions:
    1. Which train would you recommend to opt for & why?
    2. How's the weather of Chandigarh in first week of July?
    3. Is it better to start from Chandigarh or Jammu to Srinagar?
    4. I am also thinking of sending the bike by train on sleeper class ticket (RAC as of now) and fly down to Delhi and then reach Jammu or Chandigarh by train. Is it a good option? But I am not sure if the bike can be booked on a RAC ticket or only confirmed ticket is required.

Hello @BeingAwsome, Thank you for your visit on my channel and on this video. Glad you found this video nice and useful.
Please find my response inline below:
      1) Which train would you recommend to opt for & why?
-> My recommendation will be S Kranti for sure because the last station is Chandigarh, so no worries about unloading. But there are very few chances of availability of space in the luggage bogie. So here, I would suggest you go with Jhelum Express and unload your bike at the last station. It's always a good option if you are loading your bike at the starting station (PUNE) and unloading at the last station (Jammu Tavi).
      2) How's the weather of Chandigarh in first week of July?
-> Last year (2023), in the last week of June, it was raining actually. Hopefully, if it's not raining, then in the first week of July, heat won't be there. If you want to munch more miles, then you can consider Chandigarh as a starting option too.
      3) Is it better to start from Chandigarh or Jammu to Srinagar?
-> In your case, I would highly recommend starting from Jammu because it's the last station of Jhelum Express. You don't have to worry about anything because sometimes, due to very short halt time, unloading of the bike is not possible, so railway staff unload it to the last station and send it back through another train if you are planning to unload it at Ambala Cantt or Ludhiana.
      4) -> A confirmed ticket is not mandatory for bike parcels. You can parcel your bike and you can travel by air till Chandigarh and then by bus you can go to Jammu.
      5) If you have a confirmed ticket, then your bike will be considered as luggage, not a parcel, and you will get priority over other bikes even if they have been booked before you. I am also not sure about RAC. I will get the information and let you know.
Here is my recommendation to you, please assess it as per your requirements:
      1) Parcel your bike from Pune station through Jhelum Express and unload it at Jammu Tavi station. Be present at the time of loading of your bike and load your bike safely and neatly. Do not fall in the trap of parcel agents. Also remove all loose/breakable parts like wind shields, aux lamps, mirrors. Do not pack any other luggage on bike seat.
      2) Travel by air from Pune to Chandigarh (in the first half or early morning) and on the same day evening, travel by bus to Jammu.
      3) Pick up your bike from Jammu Tavi Railway station, assess it thoroughly, and if needed, visit a service center in Jammu.
      - Have 1 day of rest and the next day start your Ladakh Ride via Patni top to Srinagar.
      - I hope you will end your ride at Chandigarh. So again you have two options:
      1) If you have a confirmed ticket, your bike will be considered as luggage and it will get priority, and you will also travel on the same train with your bike (S Kranti).
      2) Or Parcel your bike from Chandigarh railway station and you can travel back to Pune by air.
Note: June-July is the peak season of Leh and Spiti, so you will see many bikes for parcels at Chandigarh railway station.
I would also like to recommend you to start your ride in the first week of June instead of the first week of July because it's the start of the season and compared to July you will see less crowd. I did the Ladakh ride in 2022 in mid-June, and it was pretty crowded.
I hope this answers will be helpful for your planning.
Let me know if you still have any queries. Happy to help you :-)
Wishing you all the very best for your upcoming Ladakh Ride.

@@geek_onwheels Thanks for the detailed answer. This is certainly helpful. Appreciate it. While I also thought of starting in (the 1st-2nd week) of June, due to the exam for my son throughout June (ending on the 29th), I had to reschedule it for to start of July.
I'll be ending the ride at Chandigarh and have my return tickets booked on S Kranti train.
